The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

Ante Milicic is an Australian soccer Coach and former professional player. As a player he represented Australia and won National Championships and was the first player to score a hat-trick in the A-League. After retiring he moved in to coaching straight away with becoming player/coach for Sydney United in 2009. At the same time he became an Assistant coach for the Australian U20 team. From there he was an assistant coach to Ange P at the 2014 WC in Brazil and the 2015 victorious Asian Cup as well as assistant to Bert Van Marjwick at the 2018 WC in Russia. In 2019 he was appointed as the Australian Womens National Coach and led them to the Round of 16 at the World Cup. In 2020 he was then named as the inaugural Head Coach for the new National league Mens team Macarthur. Some of the key highlights areHow he talks about his first task when taking over the Matilda's was to ask all the staff to present their role and responsibilities to him. And how this brought a level of calmness to the group. How his time coaching both men and women at the elite level has taught him about the importance of taking time with players as individuals and helping them prepare through either technical or emotional information. How the feeling that he didn't do enough with the talent he had as a player now shapes the way he works with helping people develop mental strength. If you would like to send us any feedback or if you know a great coach, who has a unique story to share, then we would love to hear from you, please contact us at paul@thegreatcoachespodcast.com or contact us through our website thegreatcoachespodcast.com Hosted on Acast.

This conversation is a wonderful insight into Ante Juric, the man, and the coach. This conversation is filled with honesty, frankness, and humour as well as significant wisdom. Ante fell in love with the game in Canberra. Playing for Canberra Deakin, under Tom Sermanni, he made his senior debut for this fantastic club as a youngster, like so many before. The Zelic brothers, Josip Simunic and George Kulcsar to name a few. He played almost 400 games in the NSL, with Melbourne Knights, Sydney Olympic and Canberra Cosmos. He also plied his trade in Portugal, Norway and Malaysia before finishing his playing days at Sydney United. Ante also played for Australia with the U20's, the Olyroos and the Socceroos. Qualifying as a teacher he began his coaching apprenticeship at Westfield Sports High and then Trinity Grammar. He also was an assistant at NSWIS and Sydney FC with the A League Women, working with Alen Stajcic. Ante has worked with Australia's National Women's and Men's Teams, has been National Technical Director for Women, and has coached a range of national junior teams. As Head Coach of Sydney FC Women, he has made five Grand Finals in a row! As Head Coach of Sydney Olympic in the NSW NPL he has just won the Premiership! Please join Gary Cole on this journey of discovering Ante Juric's Football Coaching Life.

Much like his Dad, John Gibson is very much less is more, his message to buyers and investors is simple, ‘DON'T PANIC, HANG ON'! Our industry leader and Managing Director of Locate Negotiate calls for calm amid what could be a short term rollercoaster ride. Whilst Gibson concedes there is reduced buyer enquiry, longer marketing periods, some vendor discounting and perhaps the days of sales figures exceeding asking prices are gone, for now, Gibson has little doubt, in fact, adamant the Real Estate market will see blue skies perhaps sooner than anticipated. Certainly, sooner than the so called experts who just a couple of years ago forecasted drops of up to 30% in the residential market. Gibson points to the growth over the last two years being ‘off the charts'. Gibson has the answers as to why we are in a strong position. A must listen for any buyer or investor! Sure, interest rates are on the rise with the RBA trying to apply the hand brake with rising living costs due to inflationary factors but for how long will the interest rates hikes last? Gibson gives his take, his reasons for optimism are factual and comforting, to say the least! Talk about ‘Where were you?' moments in Australian sport', Socceroos Coach Graham Arnold substitutes Matt Ryan, his first choice goalkeeper and his captain, with ‘The Grey Wiggle' Andrew Redmayne for the Socceroos World Cup qualifier against Peru. The major point is this was part of ‘Arnie's' plan long before this massive call and can attribute the master stroke to the influence his coaching mentor Gus Hiddink has had on our Socceroos coach as he leads the side to the World Cup in Qatar. Hiddink the master planner and strategist, and Arnold soaked up his lessons it's an extraordinary insight!  That relationship with 'Aussie Guus' etched in history a special relationship, again speaking of ‘Where were you?' moments, Australian Sporting Moment of the Century, yep, ‘that John Aloisis goal' from the penalty box slammed into the net against Uruguay in front of 82,000 adoring Australians. Simply WOW! Originally a Sutherland boy, Arnold clocked up 178 games with Sydney United during the 80's before playing abroad in Belgium, Holland and Japan. This very grounded Super Coach has Real Estate insights if purchasing in Holland! Arnold became player coach for Northern Spirit with Robbie Slater and Phil Moss also at the new club. The coaching ranks beckoned. Coaching Sydney United, then Northern Spirit, moving forward as an assistant and caretaker with the Australian teams before taking on the Australian U/23s. Arnold's time with the Central Coast Mariners was certainly a breakout period, in his three years with the Mariners the Central Coast side achieved three top two finishes, one premiership and one Championship. A quick stint in Japan before landing the Sydney FC coach and Arnold's stocks rose again with another two Premierships and an FFA Cup. He is a Football Federation Australia Football Hall of Fame Inductee; we welcome Graham Arnold to Talking Real Estate with John Gibson. We hope you enjoy this great story.

“Be strong in your beliefs. Don't compromise on your playing style and philosophy and the principles of how you want to play, whether your winning 5-0 or losing 5-0. You might tweak a few a few things but never compromise on any beliefs on the way the game should be played.” - Ufuk Talay This is an engaging and open conversation with Ufuk Talay, the Manager of Wellington Phoenix A League Team. Ufuk fell in love with the game through his father who encouraged him to develop his skills. His dad used the SBS TV show ‘Captain Socceroo' to find new skills for Ufuk to master!  After debuting for Marconi and winning a championship in the NSL, Ufuk signed for the large Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray, coached by Liverpool legend Graeme Souness. We discuss the passion of the incredible derbies with Fenerbahçe and his almost 10 years playing in Turkey. He had the opportunity to serve an apprenticeship on his coaching journey at Sydney United, the AIS and the Joeys before taking on Head Coaching roles with the Joeys and the Australian U20 teams. Then he served as an Assistant with Steve Corica at Sydney FC before taking on the Manager position at Wellington Phoenix, where his team consistently plays attractive and successful football. Ufuk talks openly about his coaching journey, his learnings from Ange Postecoglou, developing young Kiwi footballers and the challenge of Australian junior coaches with so many players not getting enough game time. This is Ufuk Talays's Football Coaching Life.

Football United vs Soccer City

This episode is a great interview, as it details an impressive soccer journey but I believe there is more to come from this man in football and in public life generally. A younger man compared to my previous interviewees, Michael Santalab’s experience at all levels of the game is immense. This interview engages you in a football sense and in regards to your life. Please enjoy this interview as much as I enjoyed spending time with Michael.

In NSW Sydney Olympic are the first club into the Grand Final, smashing Sydney United 4-0 on Sunday. Sydney United get a 2nd chance next weekend when they play APIA Leichhardt with the other Grand Final spot up for grabs. In the 1st leg of the Semi Final in Northern NSW, Broadmeadow Magic has beaten Maitland 3-1. Maitland’s season will go on the line in the 2nd leg next weekend. And in a couple of games that don’t really have any impact on the final league ladders, firstly in Tasmania where South Hobart has beaten Hobart Olympia 2-1, and secondly in Queensland where Olympic FC made sure that North QLD’s final game in the NPL was one they’d rather forget - the final score was 6-2. APIA Leichhardt has had a great week - firstly in their surprise FFA Cup win over Melbourne Victory, and then an 8-2 win in the NSW NPL Finals against Rockdale City Suns. Those wins have seen APIA move 2 places up the TPO Rankings to be the 7th best club in the country.

Congratulations to Sydney Olympic who are crowned Premiers after defeating Sydney United 1 nil yesterday. The Premiership race was in APIA Leichhardt’s hands - they just needed a win, but unfortunately for them they went down to Hakoah 2-1. A 2 a draw against Sydney FC Youth was enough for Rockdale to finish in the fifth finals spot, Blacktown finished in 4th despite going down 2 nil to Sutherland Sharks. Manly finished their disappointing season on a positive note, defeating Bonnyrigg 5-1 and Marconi missed out on finals after losing 3 nil to Wollongong Wolves. To the Capital Football NPL where Monaro have drawn 3 all Gungahlin United. Last years grand final winners Belconnen have missed out on finals after going down 3-2 to third placed Tigers FC. Canberra FC are beat Tuggeranong United 3 nil, but will have to wait to be crowned Premiers as Canberra Olympic can still finish ahead of them.
