Katie, who is in Europe interviewing Holocaust survivors protesting the Gaza genocide, plays a clip from her recently recovered footage (we thought it had been lost) of a live show she recorded in Dublin in July about the connection between Palestine and Ireland. Sadly, it's just as relevant now as it was then. For the full discussion, please join us on Patreon at - https://www.patreon.com/posts/patreon-full-124164727 The live show featured Danny Morrison, a writer and former republican prisoner from West Belfast. He was national director of publicity for Sinn Féin in the 1980s and is the secretary of the Bobby Sands Trust. It also featured Asad Abushark, a Palestinian-Irish academic from Gaza and an international spokesperson of the Great March of Return . They co-edited the book A SHARED STRUGGLE: Stories of Palestinian & Irish Hunger Strikers. The Patreon only version features hilarious Irish comedian Tadhg Hickey. Then Katie plays an interview with three members of the London-based organization Holocaust Survivors and Descendants against the Gaza Genocide: Stephen Kapos is an artist and Holocaust survivor; Agnes Kory is a musician, scholar and Holocaust survivor ; and Haim Bresheeth is a historian, filmmaker and the son of two Holocaust survivors. All three feature in Katie's documentary about Holocaust survivors and their descendants working to end the genocide in Gaza. Haim was ARRESTED for saying at a protest that Israel was not going to defeat Hamas. And earlier this month Stephen was QUESTIONED by London police. Speaking of the criminalization of speech when it comes to Palestine, we MUST ALL demand the immediate release of Mahmoud Khalil, a legal resident of the U.S. and recent Columbia University graduate who was still living in university housing who who has been abducted by Trump's ICE in what the president vows is “the first arrest of many to come.” Khalil, who was born in Syria to Palestinian refugee parents, was one of the negotiators representing student demonstrators during talks with Columbia University's administration. A story like Israel's war on Gaza naturally gets wall to wall news coverage. But sometimes blanket coverage over a prolonged period of time can start to lose its power, we start to get inured to it and its impact decreases. So in order to keep getting the message out there, you need a new angle - and comedian and writer Tadhg Hickey certainly has that angle. Tadhg has become very well-known over the last few years for unique brand of comedy, which highlights global political issues in a very fresh and accessible way. He has always covered the Israel / Gaza conflict but over the last few months he has doubled down on it. Tadhg joined me earlier this week for a very interesting conversation about this terrible conflict, how and why it all started, why it might sound the death knell for Zionism, and how he's trying to do some good through comedy.Produced by Patrick Haughey, AudioBrand

In this evocative episode of the podcast, host Tadhg Hickey invites his friend Talha Alali, a Palestinian from Tulkarm who has elegantly woven a vibrant tapestry of life in Ireland since his arrival in September 2018. As a devoted husband, father, and an impassioned human rights advocate through his work with Amnesty International, Talha brings a richly layered perspective to the conversation. The episode begins with Talha recounting a poignant encounter between his child and Tadhg's daughter during a Palestinian cultural event in 2022, symbolizing a delicate bridge between their lives. This moment not only highlights the blossoming friendship between their families but also underscores Talha's ongoing advocacy for Palestinian identity and rights, even as he navigates his new life in Ireland. As the conversation unfolds, Talha delves into his professional journey as a physiotherapist, his love for art and music, and how these passions provide a backdrop to his advocacy, offering a unique lens through which he views his experiences. The discussion takes a heartfelt turn as Talha vividly describes the harrowing events post October 7th, sharing his visceral fear and desperation when communication with his family became perilously uncertain amid the crisis. He articulates with deep emotion the continuous tragedy in the West Bank and Gaza, revealing the relentless cycle of trauma that afflicts his people—a sorrow so persistent and overwhelming that it scarcely allows space for healing.Further exploring the nuances of global perceptions, Talha addresses the disparities in attention and support between healthcare professionals and aid workers in conflict zones. The podcast concludes with a profound dialogue on the misuse of the term "antisemitism," exploring its impact on public discourse and understanding in the context of Palestinian experiences. This episode not only narrates personal resilience and cultural connection but also serves as an urgent call to acknowledge and engage with the complex realities faced by Palestinians today.Hosted by Tadhg HickeyEdited by SwanIGuess Hosted on Acast. In this powerful episode of our podcast, host Tadhg Hickey sits down with Yousef Alhelou, a dedicated Palestinian journalist currently based in London, who has made it his life's work to report on the relentless violence and injustices faced by the Palestinian people. With a voice both steady and filled with emotion, Yousef shares his deeply personal connection to the tragedy unfolding in Palestine, including the heart-wrenching loss of 65 family members to the conflict. This episode offers a rare and intimate perspective on the resilience and pain that comes with bearing witness to such profound loss and suffering.Yousef speaks passionately about journalism as his moral duty, a calling that compels him to shine a light on the realities of life under occupation and the systemic violence perpetrated against his people. He provides a critical analysis of Israel's narrative and strategies, discussing how the portrayal of Palestinians in the media and the framing of Israel as the victim serve to justify ongoing brutality and oppression.Listeners will be captivated by Yousef's firsthand accounts of the daily suffering experienced by Palestinians, stories that are often overlooked or misrepresented in mainstream discourse. His insights into the psychological and physical toll of living in a constant state of siege, combined with his critique of the international community's response, paint a vivid picture of the struggle for dignity and human rights in the face of overwhelming adversity. This episode is not just an interview; it's an urgent call to empathy and action, urging listeners to look beyond headlines and understand the human stories behind the Palestinian struggle. Yousef's unwavering commitment to documenting the truth and his profound reflections on the path forward offer a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit in the darkest of times.Hosted by Tadhg HickeyEdited by SwanIGuess Hosted on Acast. In this evocative episode of our podcast series, host Tadhg Hickey invites Leen Maarouf, a Palestinian refugee from Lebanon who has made Ireland her home since 2021, to share her remarkable journey and the challenges she has faced along the way. Leen's story is one of resilience and ambition, having arrived in Ireland to pursue her education at University College Cork (UCC) through a scholarship—an opportunity that marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life.Leen's narrative reaches a poignant climax as she recounts the events of her graduation ceremony at UCC last month, a moment that should have been a celebration of her achievements but was marred by controversy. With raw emotion, she describes how she was denied the right to carry her Palestinian flag on stage—a symbol of her identity and the struggles of her people. Further compounding her distress, the live feed of the graduation was censored, a decision that left her feeling marginalized and silenced on what was supposed to be one of the proudest days of her life.Through her conversation with Hickey, Leen delves into the deeper implications of these actions, reflecting on the pain of being denied the right to express her identity and the sense of invisibility it engendered. Her account is a powerful commentary on the broader issues of censorship, representation, and the rights of refugees and marginalized communities to celebrate their heritage and achievements without fear of discrimination.Listeners will be moved by Leen's courage in speaking out about her experiences, as well as her determination to use her voice to advocate for change and recognition, not just for herself, but for all those who have been similarly silenced. This episode is a testament to the strength found in vulnerability and the importance of standing up for one's rights and identity, making it a must-listen for anyone interested in the stories of resilience and resistance that often go unheard.Hosted by Tadhg HickeyProduced by SwanIGuess Hosted on Acast. Tadhg HIckey's searing memoir "A Portrait Of The Piss-Artist As A Young Man" won the Global Gael Bok Of The Year award for 2023 and if you've read it, you'll know why - it's a warts-and-all account of how he tried to balance tremendous success as a writer and actor with family struggles and the bottomless despair of alcohol addiction. In a scenario that many in the Irish diaspora will recognise, Tadhg's abuse of alcohol really spiralled out of control when he was performing at the Edinburgh Festival and some of his darkest days as a drinker were spent in London, but luckily he entered recovery and has survived to tell the tale. He came on the show to talk about the mechanics of writing a book, balancing low self-esteem with an enormous ego, and how telling the truth is the only way to real recovery. Tadhg Hickey is a comedian, a singer, an actor, an author, and he is also a long-time friend of the Mario Rosenstock Podcast. Tadhg was also a regular guest on the radio show I used to present on Today FM on Sundays before we started this podcast. On one of those Sunday shows Tadhg joined me for a long and fascinating chat about his recovery from alcohol addiction. What was particularly interesting was that he didn't just talk about how awful it was (and of course so much of it was), but he also talked about some of the funny sides to that life, the kind of trouble he'd get into, the wild parties he was at, and the people he met. The way he talked about his story was so different to how we generally hear topics like alcoholism discussed in the media, and it obviously caught people's ears. Because soon after that chat, he was contacted by someone in the publishing industry and invited to write a book about his life and recovery. That book is coming out very soon – it's called A Portrait of the Piss Artist as a Young Man and you'll find all the info you need about that and his upcoming stand up comedy tour here https://www.tadhghickey.com/home In this episode, Tadhg joins me on this episode to talk all about the book, comedy, addiction, drink and ecstasy, twitter spats, doom scrolling, colonialism and independence! Tadhg Hickey is a proud Cork man and a proud Sinn Fein supporter – so, naturally, the Mario Rosenstock Podcast hotline was flooded with messages of support from famous cork people and also one from one of Tadhg's heroes, a certain Mr Gerry Adams. You can hear those messages at the very start of the episode. I'm a big fan of Tadhg Hickey – currently one of Ireland's great comic minds, Tadhg was a regular guest on my radio show on Today Fm and every time he was on we had so much craic, there was always a great spark between us. And that same sense of fun and devilment was definitely there when we caught up in the studio recently for this chat. Tadhg was an original member of the Cahoots comedy troupe, he went on to write and star in a brilliant one man show (which I saw at the Dublin Fringe Festival) called In One Eye, Out the Other, about his upbringing and addiction to alcohol, and then during the last couple of years he has expertly adapted his comedy to online and his short videos are getting millions of hits. He is very interested in politics, both domestic and international, and that definitely shines through in his sketches. Here are three of his own personal favourites:Loyalism but it's a house share in Corkhttps://twitter.com/TadhgHickey/status/1364864367121022977?s=19Israel/Palestine but it's a house share in Corkhttps://twitter.com/TadhgHickey/status/1384053088915398656?s=19Working Class Characters by Middle Class Filmmakers https://twitter.com/TadhgHickey/status/1396728768325210113?s=19Tadhg and I talk comedy, politics (he's a big SF supporter), drink and drugs and recovery, spirituality, and so much more. Tadhg also plays a starring role in this episode's exclusive comedy sketch – RTE's Brian O'Donovan meets RTE's Brian O'Donovan!I hope you enjoy this one. Dear players I hope I find you well. Succulent even. I don't know why I would like to be succulent myself but I venture to say it may not be too bad a way to find oneself...….. This week on the 'padcast' I sat down to chat with two of my regular padcasters Dominic & Tadhg and as per usual it became a tremendous afternoon of madness disguised as conversation. In opening sequence Dom is extraordinary cordial and refrains from eating (a first from the Giant of Blackrock) and while it was appreciated I felt a bit of food could have made it a better podcast. So, Dom if you're reading this feel free to munch on with impunity going forward.... I know he wont read this but, you know, the message may get to him eventually and I want to cover my back.... Anyway all the while Tadhg the working class socialist (who see himself as a representative of middle class of the lower classes), pimps out his patreon and waxes lyrically on topics such as politics, football and er his patreon. All the while I'm feeling great to just be away from my wife and kids so this fresh hell is actually heaven to me. Strap in and enjoy.... What's up players and welcome back to the game of life, my name is Cornelius Patrick O' Sullivan and in this segment we are discussing the soon to be "Award Winning Podcast".... Conversations with Cornelius and in particular this weeks episode. lets go to Frank for more details... Frank: Hello Frank here, this weeks episode is extremely confusing. MacHale shows his distain right from the start by having his lunch during the episode and promptly announced he'd be opting out until he was finished his cheese and crackers. It seems when it comes to this padcast MacHale is just toying with us for his own amusement like a cat with a half dead mouse who's fate has long been sealed. Hickey, is not much better as his acerbic jabs at MacHale only add petrol to the volcano that is just waiting to erupt. But does it erupt? You'll have to tune in and see... If you enjoyed this podcast or any of the other episodes on this podcast and would like to help a man continue to fight for his dreams even though everyone is constantly encouraging/begging him to stop including his own alter ego then please Rate Review & Subscribe on iTunes. Elmarie was personally delighted to be able to meet up with Naomi Daly in the auditorium of the Everyman as it gets ready to reopen after it's longest shutdown it the theatre's history...and just being in the theatre was in itself a source of excitement! The Everyman Announces Programme of Live EventsThe Everyman, MacCurtain Street, Corkwww.everymancork.com The Everyman is delighted to announce a programme of live performance with a mix of rehearsed readings, comedy, and music. The re-opening heralds a new digital direction for the theatre with Play It By Ear, a programme of shows at The Everyman, which are also available live through audio broadcast to be experienced from wherever audiences are.Naomi Daly, Acting Programming Manager at the theatre says, “we are celebrating the voice as we focus on bringing Cork's wealth of local talent back to the stage along with some of our established favourites. It feels great to be turning the lights back on and throwing open the doors after our longest period of closure in over 30 years. We're really excited about this programme and I hope our audiences will agree that we've ‘knocked it out of the Pairc!'”Play it by Ear could be a synonym for ‘to improvise', ‘rise to the occasion' or ‘to think on one's feet'. The Everyman has adapted to the new experience of performance by creating an exciting and innovative programme that highlights the exceptional theatrical talent in Cork. As part of Play It By Ear, The Everyman presents a series of rehearsed readings, opening on October 15th with Marion, by Katie Holly who was this year's ambassador for Cork County Culture Night. Katie says “I am so pleased and proud to be involved in the reopening of The Everyman's programme; a gorgeous, atmospheric venue that encourages and inspires the people within its walls to make great, entertaining, thought-provoking theatre. I'm also delighted to be working with Laura O'Mahony, Tadhg Hickey and Eadaoin O'Donoghue on a reworking of my first professional play 'Marion', which was first produced in 2016 for Cork Midsummer Festival.” The Everyman continues to fly the flag for local theatre makers presenting The Whiteheaded Boy – a comedy in three acts, by Lennox Robinson and directed by Ger Fitzgibbon. Full of twists and turns, ups and downs, and families fighting each other, the play is as relevant today as when it was first performed in 1916. Not only does it reveal the dynamics of a family, but it is also a pointed analysis of Irish culture.Later in the month, Ger FitzGibbon returns with his play The Four Faced Liar, when the voices of the four faces of Shandon Steeple come alive with a commentary on the city's inhabitants below. The final rehearsed reading is the darkly chilling play The Seafarer, by Conor McPherson, directed by John McCarthy. For music lovers there are two spectacular live music shows to look forward to as part of Play It By Ear. Majella Cullagh, one of Ireland's foremost sopranos, returns to The Everyman with songs from the golden age of musical theatre from the genius collaboration of Rodgers and Hammerstein, accompanied on piano by John O'Brien. Feeling Good with Karen Underwood and John O'Brien brings us a night of heart-warming, and roof-raising jazz, soul, and blues with interpretations of the songs of Billie Holliday, Nina Simone, Dinah Washington, Whitney...
