Labour has slammed the Government for not getting a better trade deal out of the current Trump administration. New Zealand currently has to pay a 10 percent tariff on all imports on New Zealand products out of the US. But the opposition has claimed the Government is failing Kiwis by 'being comfortable' with a 10 percent tariff. Former trade negotiator Stephen Jacobi says the Government is watching and consulting with trading partners. "It's doing all those right sort of things. You have to remember that we are being charged as an additional tariff at the lowest end of the scale - we don't have a lot to offer the United States." Elon Musk has come out swinging against US President Donald Trump's 'big, beautiful' tax and spending bill. In a post on X this morning, the Tesla CEO called the bill an 'outrageous, pork-filled, disgusting abomination'. Musk added those who voted for it knew it was wrong - and should be ashamed. Green MP Tamatha Paul has copped more criticism from her political peers. The Wellington Central MP's been under fire over comments she made last week criticising police beat patrols - and suggesting all they do is throw away homeless people's possessions. Tamatha Paul reiterated those claims in further interviews. She also claimed a woman was imprisoned for stealing $12 worth of items - and when questioned, could not verify whether what she was told was true or not. Do you know why the Government has failed to meet all of its child poverty targets? The overarching reason I'm talking about here. Because this is really complex and there are all sorts of reasons why kids end-up living in poverty and why politicians, generally, fail to fix the problem. So the main reason why nothing seems to be achieved in this area. Why do you think that is? It's because of us. Those of us who aren't living in poverty and aren't one of those invisible people who feature in these latest stats which show we're going nowhere on this front. We're the reason. Because, if we're honest, we don't really give a damn. Unless we're in that boat, we don't really care as much as we might think we do. If we did, we'd be demanding to know at election time what politicians are going to actually do for the 156,000 Kiwi kids living in hardship. They're the latest numbers. If we really cared, we'd be grilling politicians on how they're going to get them out of hardship. But we don't. Every piece of policy we look at it and want to know what's in it for us. We listen to the Prime Minister's state of the nation speech, and we don't flinch when we realise that he hasn't mentioned child poverty once. There was nothing in there about child poverty. There's a lot of talk about fixing the economy —as there should be— but, as the Children's Commissioner is saying today, kids can't wait while the Government tries to fix the economy and action is needed now. She's right. But it won't happen because we're not demanding that it happens. Although, depending where people are on the political spectrum, some will be hearing this news today and some might be ripping into the government for not doing enough and others will be ripping into parents for not doing enough. One of the most depressing examples recently of how we don't actually care about kids in poverty is the debate over the school lunches programme. Because, every time it comes up, there's no shortage of people banging on about it being the responsibility of parents to make sure their kids are fed and why should us taxpayers pay for their kids to eat lunch? It's depressing because what someone is saying when they say that, is it's the kids fault that they've got no-hoper parents. In fact, that always seems to be the assumption, doesn't it? A kid goes hungry because they've got hopeless parents. Just like a kid who goes to school without shoes has got hopeless parents. A kid who gets bronchitis every winter because they live in a freezing house. Bloody parents. And, as long as the majority of people think like that, nothing's going to change. And, as long as the majority of people think like that, politicians know that they won't be grilled by voters wanting to know how they're going to get kids out of poverty and governments will know that they won't be taken to task for not meeting child poverty reduction targets. Sure, the coalition is feeling a bit of heat about it today with headlines and the usual talking heads out there saying they can do and should so better. But, after today, the government —in fact, every politician— knows that most people will be back to focusing on themselves, getting on with their weekend and not giving a damn about those 156,000 kids that, apparently, are growing up in the best country in the world. And I'll include myself as one of the guilty parties in all of this too. Well semi-guilty. You won't hear me saying that a cruddy school lunch programme is okay because it should be those no-hoper parents feeding those kids, not us taxpayers. You won't hear me saying that. Ever. But where I am guilty is that I've never asked a politician what they're going to do for child poverty. I'm just as capable as the next person of turning a blind eye to all this. Because, you know, gotta get on with life. Can't take on all the world's problems. And maybe it'll sort itself out. Thing is, though, child poverty won't sort itself out. Criticising parents or punishing parents won't sort it out. And politicians certainly won't sort it out - because they know that, deep down, we don't actually care whether they do or not. It's a terrible thing to say. But that's where I think the problem lies. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Australian Open semi-finalist Ben Shelton has taken the Grand Slam's on-court interviewers to task for being 'disrespectful' to players. Shelton initially laughed off some divisive comments from former Davis Cup player John Fitzgerald, who interviewed him after his first semi-final at Melbourne Park - but later told reporters he was 'shocked' by how players were treated by broadcasters. Tennis commentator Craig Gabriel says some of the comments that took place after the fact may have been better left unsaid. "With things being a little bit touchy on how things are spoken of these days - you've got to be a little bit careful." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Kevin Bardosh, Director and Head of Research at Collateral Global, discusses the pandemic response and the uniformity of viewpoint across the planet in what he calls a “totalising vision” of the COVID-19 pandemic response. Discussing his research that addresses both the conversations around the reaction and the social and political factors that fed into the public health response to the pandemic, Bardosh elaborates on the “industry of fear” where public health had a hand in the fearmongering that took place from 2020 onward. Discussing the need for a heterodox analysis, noting the experiences of many scientists who questioned the public policy at the time, Bardosh articulates how the public policy is tasked with making decisions based on making sense of competing interests while also taking decisions based on specific tradeoffs, a framework he maintains which was “completely tossed out the window” during the Covid-19 pandemic. Criticising the suspension of democratic norms, Bardosh observes that those who promoted lockdown policies despite their exaggeration of the dangers of the virus, their fabrications of modelled Covid deaths and who amplified the benefits of lockdown were almost all unilaterally promoted within their institutions while cementing institutional discourse on lockdown with little to no room for heterodox approaches. Bardosh carefully analyses the historical forces that buttressed institutional reactions to the pandemic, from cultural to political to philosophical notions of freedom, all while questioning what would happen were a pathogen with a higher death rate to emerge today. Focussing on his current research in “public health harm,” Bardosh elucidates how public health's unintended consequences of disruption and harm were dramatic and drastic, classifying the reaction to the 2020 pandemic as an “overreaction.” Bardosh also addresses the quite common human train where individuals in positions of power are reluctant to admit where they got it wrong, referring to the Milgram experiment. Hellllloooooo psycho sista's and mista's!!We have the marvellous Maddie back on the pod today to talk all things understanding your own red flags!!But First! Maddie shares a slithery pit with us! We often talk about red flags in relationships and friendships, but rarely do we open a discussion around red flags in ourselves and that's exactly what we are here to do today! This episode is not about labelling certain behaviours as wrong or bad or toxic. It's more about deepening our own understanding of self and our red flags can be used as important signals of information that we might be out of alignment with our values, that we need to feel safer or more authentic with self and others, Or they're sometimes part of old memory systems remind you to have limited interaction with a person. This is about growing our capacity to show up better for ourselves and to improve the quality of connection we're experiencing. Red flags in ourselves: It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me,1.Avoidance 2.You rely on others and external sources for worth: If you're constantly looking for validation and if you feed off of others' good views about you, you will always be looking for gratification on the outside and never find it within.3.You struggle to communicate5.Criticising and putting ourselves or others down6.Boundaries only going one way – controlling behaviour or needing to be in complete control. 7.Struggle to apologise, take responsibility and own your part 8.Assumptions Consider the perspective of, what can I learn here? What is this trying to teach me? This red flag I'm experiencing, what direction is it going to guide me in? and can I use my red flags as that, signposts and signals to re-direct. We hope you enjoy! THE Presentations Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
In my observation, American politics continues to descend into a morass of nastiness topped up with a lot of name calling and rabid criticism of the other side. In my native country of Australia, politicians won't publicly call their opponents “stupid” or “weird”, because they know the voting public won't accept that type of behaviour. In our national Parliament during the policy debates, the language is carefully monitored by the Speaker and always kept within the bounds of propriety. As in most things, America is a different planet, especially when it comes to domestic politics and elections. What about in business when we are giving public speeches in Japan? Should we call elected officials or bureaucrats “stupid” or “useless”, as we rail and lament against their shortsighted, unwieldy, ludicrous, ridiculous policies? Can we attack our sneaky, underhanded competitors in public and complain about the evils they are doing? In general, can we do some good old-fashioned whining and complaining about whatever is aggravating us at the minute? Basically, the answer is “no”. We don't have American style comparison advertising here in Japan because it is banned. Showing your product's better virtues up against the opposition is felt to be endangering societal harmony and is against the law. The thought of a Japanese CEO publicly laying into a Minister or official, regarding some policy felt to be egregious or unfair, is unthinkable. In general, public venting is not a thing here. The fear of the consequences to the firm by the Government taking revenge as a result of the public name calling is certainly a part of it. Future applications requiring official approval may suddenly get slowed right down or rejected outright. Maybe a surprise tax audit suddenly springs up out of nowhere. Complaining publicly about your company's rival is thought to be very low-level, unrefined behaviour (品がない- hinganai) and would reflect very badly on your firm's brand and reputation. We can mention about industry wide negative events like the 2008 Lehman Shock, the 2011 triple whammy of earthquake, tsunami and triple nuclear reactor meltdown and the 2020 pandemic. Referencing the hard times resulting from these external events is acceptable, because we all probably suffered to some extent during these recent events, too. We can't labour the point though and we can't go into too much hidden detail about the impact on our businesses. If we share too much data, the thought will arise that we are unstable and maybe not long for this business world. The Phoenix is a symbol here of rising for the ashes and Japan loves a good resurrection story. We can lay out in general terms that things got very bad and talk about how the team pulled together and we made it through. Going into detail about how we did it is a good idea. Everyone loves to learn lessons at the expense of others, rather than themselves. Balancing negativity with hope and revival is the key. Even if things are not totally hunky-dory just yet, talking about what you are doing to get out of the hole you are in is of interest to the audience. In my experience, the glass tends to be half empty in Japan most of the time, so we have to make an effort to break out of that formula. Telling people things are bad garners a “so what” reaction, because that is how they see things as being normal and not news to anyone. From another angle, I don't think too many Japanese enjoy schadenfreude though, at hearing about our troubles. Telling listeners how things were bad and that now they are slowly improving is felt to be more interesting. Our efforts to revive are seen as worthy and admirable, because we are ( 頑張ってる - ganbatteru) or working hard and that is a good thing in Japan. Japan suffers earthquakes, tsunami, typhoons, flooding, landslides etc., on a regular basis, so every year there is some area wiped out. On television, we see scenes of people trying to rebuild their businesses and lives and their efforts are respected. “But for them, there go I”, being the prevailing thought. We don't have to be Pollyanna in our talks, expounding how wonderful and successful we are. That approach is not well regarded either, because it sounds elf-serving and boastful. Leavening the good with the bad is a better balance and better accepted when giving speeches in Japan.

In this empowering episode, Yvonne provides you with more insights into how to use manifestation to change your script and start to live the life you want. She covers maintaining high vibes, being disciplined, the art of letting go enough to allow everything to slot into place, building resilience, taking consistent action and tapping into the power of visualisation. Yvonne also celebrates hitting the top spots in both the Apple and Spotify podcasting charts in under 8 months. Another great example of how manifestation turns dreams into reality. KEY TAKEAWAYS Motivation only gets you so far. Stop breaking promises to yourself. Set yourself little tasks and do them e.g. I am going to exercise 3 times a week. Fulfilling those small promises to yourself automatically leads to fulfilling the bigger ones that will transform your life. Visualisation is key. It is incredibly powerful - our brain does not know the difference between real and visualisation. Be consistent. Spend 5 minutes every day on gratitude, affirmations and manifesting using visualisation. The universe loves it when we help each other out. When you support others, you see success. Don't let rejection put you off. Ask yourself, do I want to change my movie? If the answer is yes, stop making excuses and get yourself together. The language you use when manifesting matters. Yvonne explains how to get it right. Let go, enjoy the journey and stop trying to force things to happen according to your schedule. Manifestation is your responsibility. You either want to change your life or you don't. BEST MOMENTS ‘Comparing is a low vibe. Criticising is a low vibe. Being jealous of other people is a low vibe. ´ ‘No to me does not mean no, it means not yet.' ‘There is no “if” in manifestation. It´s not if it happens, it is when it happens.' The Chaser has been pretty critical of Qantas since the earliest days of our newspaper – and recently we sold lots of highly satirical QANTARSE merchandise. The recent settlement Qantas has made with the ACCC in response to its recent practice of selling tickets on flights it had already cancelled is certainly worthy of considerable scepticism from Australia's premier corporate critics, Charles and Dom.Alternatively, we'd be very happy to brainstorm ways in which the airline could fix its image problems – over champagne in the Chairman's Lounge. Our guest on this week's Whittle is Tim Dieppe, Head of Public Policy at Christian Concern and author of an upcoming publication on free speech & Islamophobia. Tim & Peter discuss "Islamophobia Revisited" (https://www.civitas.org.uk/publicatio... ), a new report by Civitas' Hardeep Singh. Tim reveals the disturbing ways in which criticism of Islam is being silenced. All Parliamentary political parties except for the Conservative Party have adopted a broad and "problematic" definition of Islamophobia which links it with racism and makes any legitimate criticism of the religion "Islamophobic". In Islamophobia Revisited, Hardeep Singh conducts a thorough investigation into how Islamophobia is defined by local authorities describing a ‘panoply' of different approaches and definitions. In response to a large-scale Freedom of Information exercise, Singh discovers that one in seven (15.6 per cent) local authorities in England have adopted a definition of ‘Islamophobia' described by the government as ‘not fit for purpose'. Singh finds 22.7 per cent of Welsh local authorities and 25 per cent of Scottish local authorities have adopted this disputed definition. The adoption of a disputed definition of Islamophobia has ‘taken on a life of its own' according to Singh, who raises concerns over conflating race with religion and claims that ‘Islamophobia is a type of racism.' Singh raises concerns over an officially recognised definition of Islamophobia, something he says ‘conflates race with religion' across local authorities. Singh provides compelling evidence that not enough due diligence or scrutiny has been conducted by local authorities over their approach to defining Islamophobia as a form of racism, with concerns over free speech ‘largely dismissed.' Singh claims the adoption of a disputed definition of Islamophobia prevents ‘an honest conversation about public policies relating to faith or religion, or basic historical truths', and recommends that local councils do more to protect free speech and avoid critics of religion or religious practice being described as ‘racist' and potential prosecution under hate speech laws.
