We are finally able to post last Friday's God Talk. Blame Helene. Today we broadcast from Asheville, North Carolina, discussing the impact of an unexpected hurricane on the unprepared community. We draw comparisons to extreme situations, such as civil wars and past disasters like Hurricane Katrina, and highlight the disparity between regions accustomed to such events and those that are not. The discussion touches on the importance of community support, the inadequacy of infrastructures, and the lessons learned from natural disasters. We draw parallels between our experience and broader themes of societal change, the impermanence of life, and the importance of empathy, especially for refugees. Using humor, we reflect on personal experiences, including coping with disrupted living conditions, maintaining family normalcy, and the resilience required in the face of adversity. Finally, we explore faith, community, and the significance of supporting one another through hardships. 00:00 Live from the Eye of the Hurricane 00:33 Comparing Disasters: Hurricanes vs. Wars 01:02 Unprepared for the Storm 02:31 Community Response and Resilience 04:00 Reflecting on Past Disasters 05:43 God Talk Friday: Finding Faith in Crisis 08:12 The Changing World and Human Nature 08:54 Building and Tearing Down Walls 09:52 Impact on Children and Families 11:57 Historical Perspectives on Life and Death 12:59 Reimagining Community and Faith 16:29 Empathy for Refugees 18:04 Concluding Thoughts and Reflections Order, Disorder, Reorder: Recover, Repair, Reimagine smarticlepodcast@gmail.com #outofchaosorder #hurricanehelene #apocalypse #asheville #ashevillestrong #catastrophe #flooding #ashevillenc #cac #fatherrohr #richardrohr #centerforactionandcontemplation #spiritual #faith #godtok #faithtalk #realfaith #smarticlepodcast #podcast #smarticle @dailymeditations @Smarticleshow @BDDoble @larryolson threads.net/@smarticleshow @brand.dobes The Center for Action and Contemplation The Smarticle Podcast

"My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have received the Spirit should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Take care that you yourselves are not tempted."~ Galatians 6:1Why is it so tempting to speak harshly to the people that we love most in the world? How do we overcome this habit and speak with the gentleness that comes from the Holy Spirit? In this final installment of their four-part series on Dr. John Gottman's 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse for relationships, Kenna and Pat discuss Criticism. They delve into the importance of clear behavioral requests, replacing criticism with positive interactions, and the concept of a "gentle startup" as the antidote to criticism in relationships & marriages. Drawing from their own experiences, they emphasize the detrimental effects of criticism on emotional connection and vulnerability. This episode offers an insightful and heartfelt exploration of emotional connection, personal growth, and the impact of communication dynamics in relationships - not to mention a heated discussion about popular musicians.Join Pat & Kenna as they close their series on the 4 Horsemen, and get ready to embrace a more connected and joyful relationship!Episode 40 Show NotesCheck out the first 3 episodes of the 4 Horsemen series:Episode 14: Defeating DefensivenessEpisode 18: Tearing Down Walls & Building A Connected Marriage (on Stonewalling)Episode 30: Conquering Contempt Chapters:00:00: Intro & a new music-related game18:22: Highs & Hards27:42: Explaining Criticism, the last of the Four Horsemen for relationships42:03: The antidote to Criticism50:09: Challenge By ChoiceThank you for listening! Today on Bold Steps, Pastor Mark Jobe shows us how to tear down the walls that separate us from God. Have you ever felt like an outsider? Maybe you've moved to a new neighborhood, or have a new job... maybe a new school? You feel like you're on one side of a wall and everyone else is on the other. One of the most obvious walls is the one between mankind and God. But, when that comes down first, it actually leads to the tearing down to many other walls. God is a wall-breaker!Support the show: https://www.moodyradio.org/programs/bold-steps-with-dr-mark-jobe/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Week 4 - Who is Jesus? 5-7-23 Sunday service (11am)
"...but speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ..."~ Ephesians 4:15We return to Dr. John Gottman's "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" for marriages with a conversation about Stonewalling. In the course of every marriage, there are times that our emotions feel overwhelming. One response to that experience can be to shut down, disengage, and cut off communication from our spouse - this is what Gottmann calls "stonewalling," and it can be very damaging for a loving marriage. In this episode, we take a moment to define and describe stonewalling, the ways that it negatively impacts a marriage, and (most importantly) the antidote to overcome stonewalling and to restore healthy communication into marriage. Whether you've been married for one year or 50 years, these are skills that can help you and your spouse to become "masters of marriage"! Episode 18 Show NotesCheck out Nate Bargatze's website

In life, it’s often important to understand and empathize with those who you may have disagreements with. Within law enforcement, this lack of understanding can have life or death consequences. On this episode of the Blue View, National FOP President Patrick Yoes sits down with Jason Lehman, Founder and Executive Director of Why’d You Stop Me (WYSM). His organization, rather uniquely, gives speaking presentations to both law enforcement agencies and within the schools and communities that these agencies protect and serve. By focusing on trust, respect, and transparency, Why’d You Stop Me aims to bridge any divides between these two groups. National FOP President Patrick Yoes and WYSM Founder Jason Lehman discuss the ways in which officer wellness has changed in years since Jason first joined the force. Jason shares a particular incident that led him to develop the "Twelve Tools." 00:00 – Intro 00:46 – About Jason Lehman 03:15 – How Officer Wellness has Changed 10:15 – Tearing Down Walls 17:20 – The Twelve Tools 30:20 – Other Initiatives and Programs 39:25 – Jason’s Proudest Moment 44:18 – Final Thoughts
We are all good at building up walls in our lives. Some walls are good but the bad ones don't do what we build them to do. They confine us instead of free us. They keep us from seeing God clearly and the important people in our lives. Tear down those walls.
How will you respond when God tells you to do something you've never done? What if your tradition tells you not to do it? What will you value more, the traditions you grew up with or the living and active voice of God? Pastor Mark reminds us today that our priority needs to always be on following God, not man. We can't follow God freely if we value man's traditions too highly. Don't let your denomination or tradition hold you back when it comes to following Jesus! God is in the business of growing us and growing his church. Remain open to his leading today! Remember that he is the goal, not conforming to history.
Do you ever wonder, like Pastor Mark, if what you do makes any difference at all? You pray but you aren't sure your prayers are heard. You give, but you aren't sure if it's making any difference. And you serve but you don't see any effects on the world around you. You're not alone in wondering that but you can take comfort from God's words to Cornelius today! If his prayers are talked about in heaven, so are yours. If his giving gains the attention of heaven, so does yours. Keep praying. Keep giving. Keep serving. You probably won't see the full extent of the difference while you're here on earth. Don't let that stop you from doing good!
Pastor Mark goes after tradition today. But it's not just for the sake of bucking tradition! It's in the interest of the freedom of following Jesus. When our traditions get in the way of what God wants to do, we aren't living in the freedom he gave us. Pastor Mark will show us today that God longs to make us free from the traditions that are holding us back from being fully effective for him. Ask him today which of your traditions are moving you and those around you closer to Jesus and which ones might be holding you back. God freed the early church from prejudices against Gentiles. How does he want to free you?

Walls can bring you protection from any outside harm. But these walls are not helping us grow. With these walls, we can not experience the world and learn new things. How do we tear down these walls? Start by trusting and having faith. Become vulnerable with who you are. It is hard to influence people when you are inside these walls. Break the walls and become the person you were meant to become.
