How can we meet the growing demands for renewable energy without losing precious agricultural land? Agrivoltaics! It's one of the most exciting growth sectors in solar energy! This approach leverages solar photovoltaic (PV) systems without losing the property's agricultural capabilities, thus unlocking fertile and scarce land's dual-use potential. Few have done as much to proliferate education on this topic as Dan French, Executive Producer of the Solar Farm Summit. We recently had Dan take over as a stand-in host for Nico, and he invited Mr. Dave Gahl, Executive Director at the Solar and Storage Industries Institute to discuss all that agrivoltaic promises and what barriers still hold this promising vertical back. French and Gahl provide insights from the field where these practices are helping to stabilize farm revenue, enhance biodiversity, and support renewable energy goals. Expect to learn:Key barriers to wider agrivoltaics adoptionHow The Solar Farm Summit's case studies help to standardize templates like grazing contracts and insurance agreementsCurrent funding opportunities for agrivoltaics projectsDiscover how agrivoltaics is offering a win-win solution for farmers, energy producers, and the environment. Dan French, CEO of ResProp, Managing Director of ATX Acquisitions and longtime partner at Rex continues to believe in the power of communities. He grew up with a strong sense of Service that he learned from his father and that sitting on the sidelines never helped anyone. You've got to lean into action and use the successes & failures to help you make the next decision. After a good run as an elected official, Dan moved his family to Texas where he joined forces with Pete Rex to run their ecosystems of real estate, investment and tech companies. Dan shares that their Team's contrarian thinking is what sets them apart and allows them to gain outsized returns. This thinking doesn't only exist in their investment thesis, but also how they look for the right Teammates. Dan believes it's not just one's extensive experience in real estate that matters, but it's one character (especially during tough times) that determines if someone is going to be a fit. Tough times are as normal as the changing weather and building a Team around strong character and loyalty is the foundation to a strong company. Dan strives to live a life that is “Ever Upward” and as he continues to honor God, his family and Team, he is hopeful that they will stay at the tip of the spear and help the momentum of growth here in Austin. “I think it is really important not to assume that just trying to tie everything to revenue is the right answer … I think we should tie everything to the value and the outcomes perceived by our stakeholders.” - Dan French, CEO at Consider Solutions Procurement has long struggled with feeling as though they are an underappreciated or undervalued function that receives less support, advocacy, and budget than other areas of the business – especially revenue-driving areas, like sales or marketing. As Dan French, CEO at Consider Solutions, said in the opening session of Mastermind LIVE 2023, not only is this perception a little misguided (and likely not doing procurement any favors either), but it also can lead to an over-reliance on revenue contribution as procurement's key performance metric. Instead, he says, procurement has to understand that their existential angst is not unique. Every business unit is fighting for relevance (and resources) and delivering real value requires procurement to look at more than just cost savings and create a more “balanced scorecard” of what success looks like. In this episode, Dan talks with Philip Ideson about: How to build a balanced performance measurement framework that reflects procurement's real value contribution The importance of aligning with the business versus going rogue when it comes to goals and KPIs What procurement keeps getting wrong about their own role in the business Links: Dan French on LinkedIn Mastermind LIVE 2023 on Demand Subscribe to This Week in Procurement
For Real Estate investors who are capitalized enough to acquire properties over the next couple years, a lot of money will be made. Many current operators are over-leveraged and using floating rate debt and are now suffering the consequences. Many of them are losing money and will have to sell at a steep loss. Others are still making money, but not enough to qualify for refinances upon loan maturity, so they will also have to capitulate at a loss. Dan French, Managing Director of ATX, sold most of a 15,000-unit multifamily portfolio in 2019 when prices were starting to skyrocket. Now he's back in the market in search of distressed assets.

Dan shares that in 2019, they made the decision to become net sellers of assets due to the frothiness in the market and low cap rates. They sold about a billion dollars in assets and are now raising a fund to take advantage of the gathering storm caused by the historic rise in interest rates. They are focused on finding downside-protected deals in great locations and have expanded their asset class focus beyond multifamily.Dan also emphasizes the importance of doing thorough due diligence as a passive investor and tracking metrics such as supply in the market. The biggest challenge they are currently facing is finding great capital partners who are philosophically aligned. He shares that his success can be attributed to his upbringing and the belief and support of his parents. He gives back through his business by empowering people and also serves on the board of the John Paul II Life Center, which helps pregnant women and families. On Today's Episode: How would you define Agrivoltaics? Generally, the practice of combining agriculture and photovoltaics has been gaining momentum, and holds significant potential for multiple benefits that are critical for both the environment and society. In a recent interview, Dan French, the Executive Producer of the Solar Farm Summit, discussed his work in agrivoltaics, a practice that merges solar energy production with agricultural activities on the same land. French, known for transforming brownfields into 'bright fields' and for spearheading the agricultural tax movement, outlined the benefits of agrivoltaics. These include increased crop yields, improved soil health, and providing a habitat for pollinators. He pointed to several obstacles that impede wider adoption of agrivoltaics, such as high initial costs, lack of knowledge, and policy challenges. French underscored the importance of community engagement in gaining approval for solar projects and averred that agrivoltaics could help to address local concerns.Drawing from his experience at BP, French shared insights on real estate and brownfield development, emphasizing the relevance of engaging stakeholders and defining clear end goals. He suggested that this 'Brownfield playbook' could be applied to solar development.French expressed optimism for the potential of agrivoltaics in revitalizing rural jobs and small farms, and sees it as a key component of a broader agricultural and land use renaissance in sync with the clean energy transition. He also emphasized the significance of agrivoltaics in mitigating climate effects such as flash droughts and dust bowls. Furthermore, French referred to a study by University of Arizona Professor Greg Barron-Gafford that highlighted the potential for increased agricultural yields with reduced water usage under solar panels.Join us in Richmond August 31st for the Summer Shindig Dan and Nico discuss in the episode.https://www.eventbrite.com/e/virginia-solar-summit-summer-shindig-tickets-680277988777 If you want to connect with today's guest(s), you'll find links to their contact info in the show notes on the blog at https://mysuncast.com/suncast-episodes/.SunCast is presented by Sungrow, the world's most bankable inverter brand. You can learn more about all the sponsors who help make this show free for you at www.mysuncast.com/sponsors.Remember, you can always find resources, learn more about today's guest(s) and explore recommendations, book links, and more than 616 other founder stories and startup advice at www.mysuncast.com.You can connect with me, Nico Johnson, on:Twitter - https://www.twitter.com/nicomeoLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickalus

Technology, Data and Automation will all play a role in accounts payable as we take a look at the next few years. Wonder where you should be focusing your efforts and learning. This panel will help you narrow that down. But just how important is technology, data and automation? Can you be successful ignoring these issues? This distinguished panel of industry experts (Jen Samper, Mandy Jenkins and Dan French) explain why they believe these issues are critical to the success of any accounts payable organization. #technology #automation #accounts payable This talk is part of a week-long series for AP Appreciation Week. There is a link to the series below. The idea behind AP Appreciation Week is two-fold. First, it is a time for companies and their managers to show their appreciation for their accounts payable team. And, secondly, it is the time when AP Now says thank you to the community of professionals that supports our mission. Thus, we try and provide information this week that will help each professional individually in meeting their career goals. [And in once case, we just want to have a little bit of fun.] Accounts payable and accounting require the use of both accounts payable best practices and strong account payable internal controls. For the accounts payable process to work well, best practices for AP should be used. By their very nature, accounts payable best practices incorporate strong internal controls and avoid AP control weaknesses.
