In this episode of the Discomfort Practice, I talk with Michael Youngblood, co-founder and CEO of Unsettled, an award-winning travel community for those who embrace the unknown and value meaningful human connection. He has worked in more than 60 countries, collaborated with the White House on entrepreneurship and global development, advised Fortune 100 companies on remote work, and has taught courses on entrepreneurship and globalisation on behalf of the U.S. State Department. Previously, he was the Managing Editor of Innovations journal, a publication about entrepreneurial solutions to global challenges that is jointly hosted by MIT, Harvard, and George Mason University. Michael is a member of the inaugural TED Residency, a member of Sandbox, and an avid sailor, mountain biker, and global explorer. Michael and I discuss Unsettled's manifesto as a process and a guiding philosophy for how to live, through embracing the uncomfortable and the unknown. MIchael shares his own thoughts on navigating anxiety and depression in work and life, and the importance of taking time for self-reflection. We explore some ‘beautiful questions,' and hopefully help those listening to discover something themselves with those questions (or discover their own questions to help them explore and find their way of being, living and doing in this rapidly changing world). Many of us know that we can't do things the way they've always been done, so this is a timely conversation. Just know that you're not alone. Enjoy! Key Points Discussed: The uncomfortable childhood experience of holding hands with his adoptive black sister and being the target of hate speech, showed Michael early on the levels of prejudice and inequalities existing in the world. And how that led to him studying social sciences, as the pathway he saw to change social structures. (5:40) Michael views all questions as beautiful, as they open you up to possibilities, whilst seeking new answers. (13:00) What is your dream underachiever job? (17:20) Getting clear on what is important to Michael, with time and space for self-reflection. Opening yourself up to new opportunities, that reflect your desired lifestyle and pace of work/life balance. (27:20) Unsettled manifesto: being more than a travel company. It's a process and philosophy for living: embracing the unknown and the uncomfortable. (32:30) How Michael has dealt with and found tools to overcome anxiety. (42:40) 70% of people quit a job within 18 months of an Unsettled travel experience. (47:40) How to create your own reality. (57:30) Michael's affirmation that he comes back to at the end of every day: “Despite everything, today was a great day.” He has choice and agency to see today as a great day, despite what might have happened in it. Whether he’s founding a biotech business, drawing political cartoons, or strategizing for nonprofits, Mohammad Modarres is bringing people together in common endeavors and enterprises to create a more inclusive and equitable society. One of his latest ventures is the first-ever “Interfaith Meat.” It’s Halal, Kosher, and as a bonus, sustainably sourced. The seeds for Interfaith Meat were planted in 2001, when his family moved to Chelsea Street in a suburb of New Jersey. In the house to the left lived a Chinese pastor. To the right, secular Jews. Across the street, an Orthodox rabbi. Next door, Sunni Muslim doctors. “We would exchange holiday cards,” Modarres recalls. “And we would make home-cooked meals for each other during Ramadan.” Then came 9/11. Mohammad’s family was assaulted in public spaces by anti-Muslim bigotry, from physical attacks to forced removal of his sister’s hijab. Still, at home on Chelsea Street, his neighbors continued to offer support and kindness to each other. In Modarres’s words: “It gave us hope that this type of exchange not only could happen, but would need to happen for people to see the type of world that you want to live in.” Fast forward to 2016 when, after the US elections, bigotry erupted again. Anti-Muslim hate crimes rose 91%, and anti-Semitic hate crimes, 57%. Modarres responded by holding his first “Shabbat Salaam” dinner to convene Muslim and Jewish friends, not just to eat side-by-side, but to share the same meal. The two-in-one Interfaith Meat that honored both religious laws has since evolved into Abe’s Eats, a company whose mission is to use well-sourced foods as a medium to foster cultural understanding between communities. Modarres’s work usually starts with incubating an idea and starting small. He has participated in the TED Residency program; mentored and coached student founders at several universities; founded Interfaith Ventures, a nonprofit organization that promotes religious unity and dialogue through inclusive events; worked with food experts and religious leaders on regenerative agriculture, the importance of buying local and supporting small farms; and most recently, created a Jewish-Muslim comedy show series called “Cut the Beef!” His varied passions share a common thread of being about “first and foremost creating a society that’s built on truth.” He sees us all as neighbors. So his goal is simply “to build a longer table, not a taller fence.” Please join interfaith leaders Aryae Coopersmith and Sally Mahe in conversation with this dynamic social entrepreneur and interfaith bridge builder.

Evita Turquoise Robinson shares her story of how a transformative trip to France for a film workshop would change her life trajectory and set her on a path to live in Japan, Thailand and beyond. She opens up about her experience being the only Black person in a small Japanese town teaching English but how some of the cultural exchanges with her students had a lasting impact on the rest of her life. Evita then shares the tragedy of losing one of her best friends in a motorcycle accident, but how she gained a guardian angel and permission to pursue her dreams. She explains the intensity of “reverse culture shock” when she returned to The Bronx, and how she founded NOMADNESS Travel Tribe to create the community that she needed of like-minded travelers of color. Evita shares her entrepreneurial journey of growing NOMADNESS into a business with multiple streams of income, all while creating a supportive community for Black and Brown travelers and challenging under-representation in the travel industry. She explains the importance of Black travel spaces, as well as the importance of acknowledging “intersectionality” around age, disability, gender and sexual orientation, and providing a platform for discussing diverse experiences within the Black travel community. Evita then talks about launching “Audacity Fest” as an in-person gathering for travelers of color before successfully pivoting to a virtual format as “Audacity Digi” after COVID-19. She also shares her experience in the TED Residency and what it was like giving the first TED Talk on the Black Travel Movement. And finally, Evita offers suggestions on how white people can be better allies. FULL SHOW NOTES AVAILABLE AT: www.TheMaverickShow.com
Jonathan Kalan takes us on his journey of international travel, journalism, entrepreneurship and co-founding “Unsettled”—a global travel community of 2,000+ people from 80+ countries who are redefining the terms of their own work and lifestyle. Jonathan explains how, after college, he moved to Tanzania to open a pizza shop, and eventually transitioned into international journalism for major outlets like the BBC, Al Jazeera, and New York Times. After unexpectedly getting caught up in both the Egyptian coup in 2013 and the Al Shebab attack on the WestGate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, and seeing dozens of people get killed, he began heavily reflecting on his ‘privilege' and how he could make the biggest impact on the world. He tells the story of meeting his co-founder and ultimately doing a TED Residency to incubate the idea for his company “Unsettled”, and delivering a TED Talk at the end that. Jonathan then talks about the evolution of Unsettled, the steps taken to prioritize diversity and to ensure that participants are connected with locals in the ground, and how they facilitate that in places like Beirut, Lebanon. He then explains the types of travel experiences currently offered by Unsettled for one week, two weeks, and month-long durations. He then explains Unsettled's virtual “Lifestyle Incubator” program that helps participants audit themselves, envision their ideal career and lifestyle, and then create an achievable action plan with timeline and accountability mechanisms to achieve it. Spiritual Life - Books For You & Your ChildrenImagine tapping into the beauty of a child's innate wisdom through the sharing of sweet and wise words of guidance and valuable life skills. Ariane de Bonvoisin's series entitled Giggles and Joy: Spiritual Life Lessons for Kids does just this, with a healthy dose of enlightened humor and profound, yet simple, messages for babies and children up to ten years old. The series includes three special books: Giggles and Joy, You Are Loved and Being You. Giggles and Joy gives new perspectives on everyday life, by celebrating topics like Mother Earth in unique ways, a child's growing body and all its remarkable abilities, and the importance of sleep. The book articulates the power of subjects like kindness and gratitude, and also of bad days as well. She helps the reader transform tough moments by infusing them with a new light, paving the way for an unexpected, yet welcome lesson. Giggles and Joy is a book that demonstrates the power each child carries within. Through the words found in this delightful book, images are created of a world beyond what is in front of the reader. Ariane created a deeper message that gives voice to a child's spiritual nature. You Are Loved centers on the concept that love is everywhere, breaking it down into examples so practical and relatable that speaks to a child on a soulful level. This radiant book transcends the mysteries of life into a thing of beauty; life can be happy and sad, confusing and exciting. Difficult experiences like illness, scary issues like dealing with change, and confusing matters like coping with grown-ups' emotions are all touched on with meaningful morsels of wisdom, tapping into the soul, helping children remember their inner light. Being You breathes energy into a child's essential connection to nature, terrestrial and spiritual. Touching upon subjects like God (while honoring the abundance of diverse spiritual beliefs), in telling the truth and the importance of breathing, this sweet book empowers children to believe in their strength of character. Readers are encouraged to take charge of their lives by listening to their heart and thinking for themselves. Being You nurtures the children who read it, wrapping them in a cloak of love and light, teaching them that they have the tools on the inside to heal, to overcome, to be who they are. Ariane describes her books as being "'spiritual' in that "they are imbued with love, optimism, humor, honesty, and common sense. They do not promote or offend anyone's sense of God or the Universe. They exist beautifully next to anyone's beliefs. It is urgent that we take care of our children's spirit as much as their minds and bodies."

Nikki Webber Allen is a 2-Time Emmy Award winner with 20 years of experience producing content for media outlets including Warner Bros., HBO, ABC, 20th Century Fox and BET. In 2013, while working as the Vice President of Casting & Talent Relations for the cable network TV One, Nikki lost her 22-year old nephew, Paul, to suicide after his years of struggle with depression and anxiety. Since then, she’s become a passionate mental health advocate. In Paul’s honor, she launched the nonprofit I Live For.org to create a safe space for honest, unapologetic conversations about mental health in communities of color where the cultural stigma of mental illness discourages far too many young people from seeking help. Esteemed scholar and advisor to the foundation, Michael Eric Dyson has called I Live For “an incredibly important organization that offers much needed support to those who too often suffer in silence.” Her work with I LIVE FOR.org has been featured in the Washington Post, Huffington Post, NPR and NBC News. She’s the host of Slate Magazine’s podcast “Life Effects” and she’s currently producing and directing a documentary film featuring a diverse group of compelling young men and women who reject the stigma of mental illness and share candid stories about their experiences living with depression and anxiety. The film is being scored by her husband musician Jeffrey Allen of the Grammy nominated R&B band Mint Condition. In Spring 2017, she was chosen for the highly-coveted TED Residency program which culminated in delivering an impassioned TED Talk entitled, “Don’t suffer from your depression in silence,” which has garnered over 1.7MM views.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-trauma-therapist-podcast-with-guy-macpherson-phd-inspiring-interviews-with-thought-leaders-in-the-field-of-trauma/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast?
