Consumer Reports recently purchased a 2021 Tesla Model S for our test program, which now features a steering yoke rather than a traditional circular steering wheel. We share our first impressions on what it is like to use this steering input on the highway, in the driveway, and in crowded parking lots. We also discuss the other big changes to this vehicle, including its lack of directional and wiper stalks (now a touch-sensitive button on the yoke), horn placement (also a touch button), and touchscreen/predictive gear shifting mechanism. ----------------------------------- Have a question for our experts? This week we discuss the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E all-electric SUV, sharing our first impressions on the driving dynamics, the screen-dominated interior, and if we think it is worthy of the Mustang badge. Tesla recently unveiled big changes to its Model S sedan and Model X SUV, introducing a yoke-style steering wheel, and foregoing turn signal and gear selector stalks in favor of touch capacitive buttons and screen controls. We speculate what these changes will mean for drivers, and touch on other EV-related topics, including maintaining electric vehicle battery health, if electric cars wear out tires faster than a traditional vehicle, and what all this new technology means for auto reliability. ----------------------------------- Have a question for our experts? Lots of electric car news to get charged up about this week, as Tesla unveiled its Model 3-based crossover Model Y, and Henrik Fisker's new automotive venture announced a $40,000 all-electric SUV. We recently bought an electric vehicle of our own for our test program, the 2019 Hyundai Kona EV, and give our first impressions on how it compares to the top rated gas version. Tesla has been in the news a lot recently, with announcements about price drops and increases, new Autopilot functionality, stores closing (or not,) and the availability of the long-promised $35,000 Model 3. What should a consumer make of all this? Our experts give advice on what to do if you're questioning whether a Tesla makes sense for you. We recently purchased the new 2019 BMW 3 Series, and we give our first impressions of what it's like behind the wheel. We end this episode with audience questions about Jaguar XJ and Dodge Charger reliability, how we weight a car's performance based on its intended use, and the machinations behind issuing a car safety recall. ----------------------------------- Have a question for our experts? This week, we discuss data from IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) regarding advanced safety technology, and whether semi-autonomous equipped cars are providing a safety benefit to drivers. We just bought a 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback to join our testing program, and we give our initial impressions, and whether Toyota can convince buyers that a Corolla can be sporty! We also answer audience questions about a replacement for a Nissan Altima, modern convertible reliability, and how we can buy cars anonymously after all these years. ------------------------------------ Have a question for our experts? Time is running out to grab the enticing $7,500 federal tax credit for vehicles from Tesla and General Motors. What should a buyer do to take advantage of the program while it lasts? We'll share our road test results on the 2018 Lexus LS 500, and wrap the episode by answering questions on all-wheel drive systems, auto stop/start technology, and electronic shifter designs.
