Nun ist es soweit, es heißt Vorhang auf für die Neuauflage einer Ikone: Der neue Toyota Land Cruiser setzt die ruhmreiche Tradition der legendären Geländewagen-Baureihe fort und kehrt dabei zu den Ursprüngen des Erfolgsmodells zurück. Mit bewährten Eigenschaften wie Qualität, Langlebigkeit und Zuverlässigkeit auf jedem Terrain und wegweisenden neuen Technologien für mehr Komfort, Konnektivität und Sicherheit. Das Erbe des Land Cruiser Der erste Land Cruiser wurde vor gut 73 Jahren, am 1. August 1951, vorgestellt, damals unter dem Namen Toyota B. Er lieferte schon kurze Zeit später einen eindrucksvollen Beweis für das, was in ihm steckt: Als erstes Fahrzeug überhaupt erklomm er die Hänge des Mount Fuji bis zur sechsten Bergstation. 1954 wurde er in Land Cruiser umbenannt, er ist der am längsten produzierte Toyota überhaupt – und einer der meistverkauften. Weltweit wurden bis heute mehr als 10,4 Millionen Fahrzeuge in mehr als 170 Ländern und Regionen abgesetzt. Das Land Cruiser Trio: Heavy Duty, Station Wagon und Light Duty Unter dem Begriff „Land Cruiser“ gab es im Laufe der Jahre unzählige Modellvariationen, seit den 1980er Jahren sind es drei Kerntypen, die jeweils unterschiedliche Kundenwünsche erfüllen: Heavy Duty, Station Wagon und Light Duty. Die Heavy Duty Baureihe ist auf ultimative Robustheit und Einfachheit ausgelegt und damit dem Geist des ursprünglichen Modells treu geblieben. Ihre wichtigsten Märkte sind heute Afrika, der Nahe Osten und der Pazifikraum. Ein eindrucksvolles Symbol für den beständigen Charakter dieses Modells ist, dass der Land Cruiser 70 gerade erst in sein fünftes Produktionsjahrzehnt eingetreten ist. Der erste Station Wagon wurde 1967 eingeführt und markierte eine grundlegende Neuausrichtung der Toyota Strategie für den Land Cruiser. Das Modell richtete sich an Kunden, die ein allradgetriebenes Fahrzeug für die Freizeit und nicht für die Arbeit suchten – ein Fahrzeug, das sowohl im Fahrgastraum als auch im Laderaum viel Platz bot.  Und 1984 debütierte die Light Duty Serie. En este enlace tienes toda la información: https://bepear.es/ Vamos a hablar de una furgoneta alemana nacida gracias a la inquietud de un inglés y de un holandés, que nació como herramienta de trabajo y se convirtió en icono “hippie” e incluso en el vehículo de la “tortugas Ninja” … Y que tiene unos precios, como vehículos clásicos, absolutamente desorbitados. Os advierto una cosa, poner en orden todo esto no va a ser nada fácil. Comenzamos por el nombre: Supuestamente se llama “Transporter” de ahí la T, pero el modelo se comenzó llamando T2, porque el T1 era el Beetle o Escarabajo o Cucaracha o Vocho o Käfer o Fusca… nombre todos ellos que nunca fueron oficiales; el oficial fue T1 o “Tipo 1”. Y la furgoneta derivada del modelo Tipo 1 es el modelo Tipo 2… lógica alemana aplastante. Pero no podemos mezclar el modelo con las generaciones. Es decir, que una furgoneta de VW, por ejemplo, es un modelo T2 pero puede ser de la generación T1, es decir, de las primeras. A día de hoy hay 6 generaciones. Y ahora vamos a hablar de nombres. Esta furgoneta, según su destino, se ha llamado Transporter, Kombi o Microbus, según se trate de una versión de carga, mixta o de uso para pasajeros. Estos han sido nombres oficiales, porque también se las ha llamado, según generaciones y tipos de uso, como Station Wagon, Bus, Campero y Bulli. Siempre lo digo y lo que os voy a contar ahora lo demuestra: La realidad supera la ficción. Terminada la Segunda Guerra Mundial la ciudad de Wolfsburgo y son los británicos quienes ponen en marcha la fábrica. Pero hay más: Es un holandés llamado Ben Pon quien cuando ve en la fábrica un VW Escarabajo convertido en furgoneta para uso interno propone la construcción en serie de dicho vehículo. Estos momentos de cierta confusión de algún modo facilitan la toma rápida de decisiones. El modelo Tipo 2 o Transporter comienza a fabricarse el 8 de marzo de 1950 y en la primera generación que ahora todos conocemos por T1. No se habían complicado mucho la vida: Sobre un chasis de Escarabajo habían montado una carrocería de furgoneta, manteniendo obviamente el motor detrás, lo que restaba espacio… pero era lo que había. Este modelo debuta como furgoneta pura y dura, pero enseguida nacen versiones mixtas denominadas oficialmente Transporter Kombi o “Kombiwagen”. Muy poco tiempo después estas furgonetas pasan a fabricarse en Brasil y en Sudáfrica en 1953 y 1956 respectivamente. Esto contribuiría a su éxito internacional… y a la ceremonia de la confusión, porque la sucesión de modelos era distinta en cada fabrica y por tanto en cada mercado. Por ejemplo, la generación T1 en Alemania se produce hasta 1967 cuando aparece la T2, pero en Brasil se mantiene en producción hasta 1975… en las fechas de las generaciones nos ceñiremos a Europa, por simplicidad. Transporter T2. Continuista (1967). Lo más destacado, que no lo más destacable, de la T2 es que supuso el fin del doble parabrisas plano sustituido por uno de una sola pieza y curvado. Transporter T3. Diesel y 4x4 (1979). Es más de lo mismo con el motor trasero, pero con la llegada de motores diésel, la tracción integral, el cambio automático e incluso aire acondicionado en algunas versiones. Transporter T4. ¡Toma ya 911! (1990). Hablaba de hacer un paralelismo de la VW T con el Porsche 911. La T nace con motor posterior porque es lo que había, como el 911 ambos derivados del VW Escarabajo, aunque en el caso del Porsche hubo un modelo de transición, el 356. Transporter 5. Con cambio DSG (2003). La T5 es muy continuista respecto a la T4… había poco que mejorar. Transporter 6. Electrificada (2015). La última T sin duda ha perdido parte del encanto y la capacidad de seducción de sus ancestros. Y ya está disponible en versiones eléctricas, con motor de 113 CV y un equipamiento de verdadero lujo.

“¿Una fábrica de coches que hace aviones? No, una fábrica de aviones que hacía coches”. Así comenzaba un video sobre Saab que hicimos hace 3 años ya… en ese video hablamos de su historia… pero no de sus coches. Hoy, y a petición popular, con este podcast, cubrimos ese déficit y hablamos de los 10 Saab más inolvidables. Uno de los encantos de Saab era que fabricaba aviones… y eso se notaba en sus coches. Sobre todo en los primeros, como iremos viendo. Pero ese no era su único encanto. Tenía más. Por ejemplo, su estética atractiva, pero sobre todo diferente: Un Saab era un Saab y lo reconocías a centenares de metros. Pocas marcas que no sean exclusivas pueden presumir de esto… Otra virtud era su tecnología, muy avanzada y, de nuevo tengo que decir sobre todo al principio, con soluciones técnicas muy originales. Eran además coches muy fiables y, desde luego, de una calidad muy destacable, en mi opinión, ya en los años 70, al nivel de las mejores alemanas, entonces y ahora un referente, sin dudarlo. Por todas estas razones Saab ha sido una marca que era y es muy querida por los aficionados… y a la que se le echa de menos. Es cierto que la llegada de General Motors en el 2000 la marca pierde gran parte de su identidad… estás grandes compañías, igual que Ford hizo, más bien perpetró con Jaguar, son incapaces de respetar la identidad de una marca. Y en 2010 llegaron los neerlandeses de Spyker Cars N.V. para “rematar” la faena y quebrarla en solo un año. A pesar de diversos intentos a día de hoy sobreviven con rentabilidad la división de aviones, a la que le ha venido muy bien la guerra de Ucrania y la división de camiones, Scania AB. Una pena. Todo esto lo contamos con todo detalle en el vídeo titulado: “¿Qué fue de Saab? De los aviones a los coches” También contamos que Saab significa “Svenska Aeroplan AB” o sea, en castellano, “Fabrica Sueca de Aviones S.L.” ... Ursaab: El original Saab (1946). Cuando en Saab pensaron en fabricar coches hicieron este prototipo, llamado también 92001 y X9248. A mí me gusta más el nombre de Ursaab porque en sueco. Literalmente, significa Saab original.Y en este caso la palabra original puede usarse en sus dos sentidos: Original por ser el primero y por ser diferente. Un dato curioso: De los 16 ingenieros que participaron en el diseño de este modelo solo 2 tenían carné de conducir. Saab 92: Tras el 91 Safir (1949). Como hemos dicho Saab fabricaba aviones y lo de los coches era una aventura. Acababan de lanzar un avión llamado Saab 91 Saffir y su siguiente lanzamiento era el coche… así que le pusieron el nombre de 92. Saab 95 Station Wagon: ¡7 plazas! (1959). Lo confieso: ¡me encantan estos Saab! Pero conocéis mi debilidad por loa Station Wagon, break o ranchera, como quieras llamarlo. Y el Saab 95, una evolución corregida y aumentada del 92 se lanza en versión “familiar” en 1959, apto para 7 plazas, las dos traseras en sentido opuesto a la marcha. Saab 96 2T: El último de su especie (1960). Al 92 le sucedieron las mejoradas versiones 93, luego 94 y el Station Wagon 95. El 96 era el coche que sustituía a los anteriores modelos… Su motor de dos tiempos, 750 cm3 y 38 CV fue mejorado con un 841 cm3 de 40 CV y ya con cuatro marchas. Fue el primer Saab en llevar reposacabezas, cinturones de seguridad y doble circuito de frenos en diagonal. Llego a haber una versión “Sport” con este motor, pero 57 CV de potencia. Saab 96 V4: Llegan los 4t (1964). La normas anti polución ya apretaban y los motores de 2 tiempos eran sencillos y potentes, pero no muy económicos. Saab no tenía motor de 4t ni tiempo para desarrollarlo ni dinero, pues un tradicional motor 4 en línea no cabía bajo el capo del 96. Pero un V4 a 60 grados sí podría caber. Era un motor raro, pero… que Ford fabricaba para sus Taunus entre otros modelos. Este motor inicialmente de 1.498 cm3 ofrecía 65 CV, menos emisiones y mucho menos consumo. Saab Sonett II: ¡Un deportivo! (1968). ¿Un Saab deportivo? Saab espoleada por los éxitos en competición decide vender un coche directamente para ser usado en competición: El Saab Sonett, hablamos de la serie I. Más que a Saab esta idea se le ocurrió a un loco, esos locos maravillosos de los que siempre hablo, Rolf Melide.El Sonett I fue solo un prototipo, pero ya como coche deportivo no orientado a la competición, nace en 1968 el precioso Sonett II. Lo curioso de este coche es que lo hubo en versión con motor 2t de Saab con 60 CV y luego con el V4 procedente del Ford Cortina con 65 CV. Saab Sonett III: ¡Qué bonito! (1970). Soy consciente de que soy un friki, pero este coche me encanta. La base es un diseño nada menos que del italiano Sergio Coggiola que fue modificado por el ingeniero sueco de Saab, Gunnar Sjögren que modificó la carrocería a de fibra para poderlo adaptar al chasis y motor V4 del Sonett 2. Saab 99 Turbo: Inicio de una historia de amor… (1977). El Saab 99 se presentó en 1968. Saab tenía un coche muy bueno, muy bien construido, pero con poca potencia para escalar a segmentos superiores. Y tenían el problema de que no cualquier motor cabía en ese vano motor… era necesario diseñar de cero un V6, algo costoso en tiempo y dinero. Pero los ingenieros suecos pensaron otra cosa: ¿Y si ponemos un turbo? Con este sistema el motor dos litros llegaba a los 145 CV y el coche superaba los 200 km/h. Esta historia la contamos con más detalle en un reciente vídeo titulado “Los primeros turbos… ¡que miedo!”. Saab 900 Aero Turbo 16: Amor a primera vista (1984). Era un fan absoluto de Saab… sin haber probado ninguno de sus coches. Y al poco de trabajar como probador llega a la redacción un Saab… yo grité. “¡Me lo pido!” Y me jefe y mis compañeros accedieron. Fue verlo en el garaje y me enamoré… hasta hoy. El coche era un 900 Aero Turbo 16 con motor 4 cilindros, dos litros, 16 válvulas, turbo y nada menos que 175 CV para un peso de 1.300 kg, nada excesivo en un coche de 4,7 metros y generoso equipamiento. Saab 9000 3.0 V6: El último auténtico (1995). Lo hubo con diversos acabados, como CD y CS, pero este coche es importante por tres cosas. Una: Contaba con la plataforma conjunta comparativa como el Alfa 164, Fiat Croma y el Lancia Thema, aunque con un toque Saab muy particular en sus reglajes de suspensiones. Dos: Fue el primer Saab con motor V6, un 3 litros procedente de GM con 210 CV. Tres: Para mí, es el último verdadero Saab… que luego siguieron haciendo muy buenos coches, pero que parecían evoluciones de lo anterior y no aportaban mucho. Conclusión. Como dicen las viejecitas en los duelos fúnebres, “siempre se nos van los mejores”. En el caso de Saab es cierto. Jill and Tom opened this holiday episode of the podcast by discussing how the residents of Skokie, Illinois, mount huge light-up menorahs on the roofs of their cars in celebration of Hanukkah. Tom vowed to do the same next season. The hosts went on to discuss a massive Honda/Acura recall, and the echoes of the giant Takata airbag recall which still haunts the industry. Jill shared her thoughts about the massive—and massively expensive—Ford F-350 King Ranch pickup truck she recently evaluated. The review included a conversation regarding the benefits of opting for the single-rear wheel (SRW) option. In the second segment, Sam Fiorani of AutoForecast Solutions joins Jill and Tom to review the most noteworthy stories of the year. Sam recalled the UAW strike, slowing EV demand growth, growing vehicle inventories, and strong car sales. Episode 96: “The Station Wagon Show: Country Squires, Roadmasters, Vista Cruisers, and whatever Clark Griswold drove”In this episode, producer Phil Tower plus hosts Al Schwinkendorf and John Puhek talk about the much-maligned but now making a comeback station wagon.We spend the first part of the episode talking about a very rare 1996 Buick Roadmaster that is up for auction on the Hagerty marketplace website.The 1996 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon was basically a Cadillac with a Buick nameplate. It was decked out with a plush cabin, and a massive V8 and it amazingly offered seating for eight thanks to a collapsible rear-facing third seat. And speaking of what's under the hood, this wagon has a 5.7-liter ‘LT1' V8 which was also found in the C4 Corvette. Buick stopped making this beastly wagon in 1996, marking the last full-size, body-on-frame, rear-wheel drive station wagon produced by an American automakerIt's interesting to note that station wagons reached their sales peak in 1976 when U.S. sales stood at 972,212 and accounted for 10% of all vehicles sold in the U.S. That same year, there were 62 station wagon models available to American car buyers. You read that correctly… 62 different station wagon models!We also talk about the amazing Ford Country Squire wagon... Another huge, best seller. A fun childhood memory. It's comforting to be reminded that although the world around us has changed dramatically, once in a while we're still reminded of the simplicity of it all.

Intractable racism, increasing inequality, and intensifying climate change—for author and environmental activist Bill McKibben, these are some of the legacies wrought by the growth of American suburbs during the past forty years.  On this episode, McKibben joins Commonweal associate editor Griffin Oleynick to speak about his new memoir, The Flag, the Cross, and the Station Wagon, which identifies the 1970s as the pivotal decade that marked a definitive shift toward individualism.  Our problems are real, but not insurmountable, McKibben argues. Our situation can be improved by organizing for change, and reclaiming American symbols of patriotism, faith, and fairness. In the 2000s, dismayed at the lack of grassroots action to stop climate change he founded 350.org.
