Henrik Fisker is one of the most famous and best regarded automotive designers in history. His work with vehicles such as the BMW Z8, the Aston Martin DB9 and V8 Vantage and the Fisker Karma is both well documented and widely admired as being some of the most beautiful modern automobiles. Henrik is a fantastic guy with an incredible eye for design and we were honored to have him stop by the Petersen Museum to talk cars. You're going to love this one!
The one-time founder of Fisker Automotive, who created the Karma luxury hybrid vehicle about 11 years ago, is back at it again, this time as Fisker Inc and its first SUV, the Ocean. To be built by industry veteran Magna International, the company has a better chance to make it this time around. We discuss.
Kyle returns to his roots with YouTube car reviews: both EV and ICE performance are on the menu! Tim reviews the recent market for upcoming collector cars including modern GM and Toyota SUVs. Kyle and Tim talk dream cars, nightmare cars, and lessons learned buying both. Kyle recounts misadventures with Fords, Jaguars, and Chevrolets. He once bought a Jaguar Mk VIII held together by rivets and bondo – and powered by a Ford mill! Tim recalls all the lessons he learned from trying to feed two aging Audi S8s and an impulsive fling with the original Fisker Karma (yes, he did!). Tim ponders whether he's on a path to self-destruction in his search for a 1957-1958 “Forward Look” Mopar.”
We had the great opportunity today to host a friend and longtime auto industry entrepreneur, Henrik Fisker, CEO of Fisker Inc., for our first electric car-focused episode. Henrik is a leading automotive designer and some of his creations include the BMW Z8, Aston Martin DB9, Viking motorcycle, Fisker Karma, and Force 1, to name a few. He also previously held executive positions at Ford Motor Company and Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd. Simply put, his impressive career is something us car nerds can only dream of, and we were thrilled to visit with him and discuss the new Fisker Ocean electric SUV. Our conversation had a few major themes: electric car development, supply chains, consumer attitudes, the hybrid market, adoption rate of EVs, Fisker's strategic partnerships and outsourced manufacturing, and a few of the ways Fisker has separated themselves from competitors with pricing, range, and unique design features. It was also fascinating to hear Fisker's vision for a fully online consumer experience from purchasing to delivery to maintenance and how they are reimagining the traditional dealership design. Before Henrik got away, we couldn't help ourselves... we asked him about his favorite cars of all time. He had some great answers! To kick us off, Mike Bradley presented a summary of this week's equity & commodity performance and interesting headlines, and also flagged that we are headed into Q2'22 earnings with OFS reporting this week. Colin Fenton expanded on Mike's thoughts with an international update on markets, changes in G7 leadership, Nord Stream gas flows, and a key fertilizer production statistic from this week. We had a lot of fun spending time with Henrik and are excited to follow Fisker's future. Thanks to you all for watching!
Well since I have been lazy by not putting up our shows in a timely manner. I thought I would do them as Flashback shows. During this show Ashley and I talk about March snowstorms. They seem to come out of nowhere and dump a lot of snow just as the weather starts to warm up. Then we talk about a rare care that you might see on the road and wonder what it is; the Fisker Karma. It is an electric car with a range extender generator in it. It can go 80 miles on a charge and up to 360 using the range extender. They have since changed their name to just Karma. We discuss a cool new feature that India is using in their traffic lights, microphones. The idea is the more honking that happens at a red light the longer they are going to make you sit and wait. Then David calls in to ask about electric parking brakes. This unpacks why vehicle manufactures a moving to having electric park brakes on cars. Brian calls in to talk about his Chevy Trailblazer he just bought with a water leak. Autonomous driving has been making its way into our life. Tom talks about the different systems and how they work. We also take a guess at how long it will be until full autonomous cars are a mainstay here in America. We wrap up the show by talking about the top15 cars that will go more than 200,000 miles. News flash, the list lacks any Nissan product on it. One place you will find a Nissan is at an SCCA Rally Cross event which is were we spent our weekend watching off road racing. Ira Spector owns a rare car he sometimes compares to a cute dog. It's a term of endearment. When he's driving his 2012 Fisker Karma Revero everyone wants to know all about it. "It's like a puppy; people stop you and they engage you," said Spector, who likely owns the only Revero in Los Gatos. "They ask questions; it's kind of fun. Most of them have never seen it before. Others who have seen one may think the company is bankrupt and that they're longer built." Fisker Karma: Rare, Beautiful Spector is our guest on this episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-hosts Bruch Aldrich talk with the car's owner, his enjoyment of sports cars and his automotive passion for his Fisker Karma. A 2012 Fisker Karma — only about 2,700 were globally available. A retired electrical engineer, Spector has further fun as the organizer of a club whose members own the iconic upscale sports car. The group periodically gathers for a seminar relating to the car, lunch and a driving outing. Owners from throughout the Bay Area and as far away as Canada bring their Karmas. The gatherings have had as many as 20 participants. "In my opinion, it's one of the most beautiful cars ever designed," said Spector, who has owned many other sports cars, including several Corvettes. "And that's why I want to keep it for as long as I can drive it. It's performing beautifully; it looks brand new inside and out." Fisker Karma: Made only in 2012 Although new versions were made after a change of ownership beginning in 2017, about 2,700 of the electric-gas, plug-in hybrid original Reveros were made in 2012. About 1,600 were available in the United States It's the only model manufactured by Fisker Karma and its originator, Henrik Fisker. The company went out of business a year after it began. "For any other manufacturer, that would be a prototype run," said Spector, a retired electrical engineer, about the limited edition."That's what we are all driving and everyone has had problems with it. It wasn't really finished." The original Fisker Karma was only manufactured for one year. The Revero has about a 50-mile electric-only range, 300-mile total range. When switched to "Sport" mode, the Karma will use the gas engine in conjunction with the electric motors. The total output is 403 horsepower. It accelerates from 0-to-60 miles per hour in about six seconds. Not everything was perfect. Replacement batteries weren't available until a third-party manufacturer emerged. When Revero models were repaired, Spector believes owners were used as test drivers to "find the bugs and get them fixed." Fisker Karma: A car drivers love driving But he's not complaining. The original car has had a resurgence. New models have also returned via Karma Automotive, headquartered in Irvine. Fisker attended the recent Los Angles Auto Show to tout his pending new all-electric sports car, the Fisker Ocean. Spector's car also carries a family legacy. With his Barbara (she drives a Tesla Model 3) then the mayor of Los Gatos, the couple drove the Revero via a loan from the owner in the city's annual holiday parade in 2012. Spector bought the car two months later for about $100,000. He traded in a Jaguar XK8. "It sat in a lot for a year with a bunch of other cars because of the company's bankruptcy issues," he said. "We were invited to rides in a parade. One of the investors in Fisker who had the car and let us use it. I fell in love with it just sitting in it and looking at it." The 2.0 GM turbocharged engine is similar to the engine in a Pontiac Solstice. It's used to charge the battery. The Revero, Spector says, is quiet, smooth and a vehicle for drivers who thrive on the enjoyment of driving. "The Fisker Karma was designed to engage you with a driving experience," he said. "It's got 22-inch wheels. It's low-to-the-ground. It's heavy. The CG (center of gravity) and tires make it handle beautifully. It's so much fun to drive. "By contrast,

EV ORDERS SURPASS ICE VEHICLES AT ZENITH - JUNE saw orders for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) overtake internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles for the first time at independent leasing and fleet management company Zenith. The transition to BEV in cars account for 54% of orders in June compared to 32% in the same month last year. Over the Past 12 months, 41% of orders were for BEVs. - Demand for electric vans also increased in June to account for 69% of van orders compared to 1% in June 2020. Over the last 12 months, demand for fully electric vans has built to account for almost 1 in 3 van orders. - Zenith says that salary sacrifice is helping company car drivers to transition to BEVs. In one scheme, 85% of orders have been for BEVs, with the remaining 15% for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. It will lead to an average saving of 372 tonnes of carbon for each year the vehicles are on the road. Original Source : https://leasingbrokernews.co.uk/ev-orders-surpass-ice-vehicles-at-zenith TESLA MODEL 3 IS #1 ELECTRIC CAR IN GERMANY IN JUNE, VW E-UP REMAINS 2021 LEADER - The German plugin vehicle market scored over 64,000 registrations last month, with both plugin powertrains rising fast - last month's plugin share ended at 24% (12% BEV), with BEVs outselling PHEVs for the first time this year - The yearly plugin vehicle market share climbed to 23% (11% BEV). There were 312,287 plugin vehicle registrations in the first half of the year. So, this market is firmly in The Disruption Zone and well ahead of last year's score of 14% plugin vehicle market share. Will we see the final 2021 market share hit 25% 30%? - Looking at last month's best sellers, the Tesla Model 3 was the winner, hitting 4,462 deliveries, a new record for the sports sedan in Germany. The Tesla top seller ended ahead of the two Volkswagen frontrunners, the #2 e-Up and the #3 ID.3, which, by the way, had its best score of 2021 last month (2,448 registrations). Expect the compact Volkswagen to have a stronger second half of 2021. - we should mention that several new models are in ramp-up mode, like the Korean Hyundai Ioniq 5, an XL retro-hatchback with a unique personality. It scored 514 registrations in only its 2nd month on the market. The Opel Mokka EV, possibly the most attractive model in the whole Opel lineup, hit a record 655 registrations last month and could be another Stellantis model to reach the table soon. There's also the Opel Corsa EV and Fiat 500e. Original Source : https://www.foxnews.com/auto/nypd-buys-47k-tesla-model-3-for-highway-patrol-division MODEL 3 POLICE CRUISER SAVE TENS OF THOUSANDS - The purchase premium is recouped in one year. After four years, the savings are enough to pay for another Tesla. One EV saves 23.5 tons of CO2 emissions annually. - Using a Tesla Model 3 for police duty was a new idea back in Dec. 2019 when the Westport Police acquired one for use as a fully customized police cruiser, going into service in Feb. 2020. This was the second Model 3 to be acquired by a police force (Bargersville, IN was the first), but according to the Westport Police, this was the first one to be fully tricked out for law enforcement. - The biggest single item in the customization is the license plate reader, and it is here that there was a savings of $10,000 ($8,000 vs $18,000) due to taking advantage of the technology native to the Tesla. As far as Pilot discounts, there was no charge for added cameras, lights, siren, and the weapons rack. These discounts amounted to just over $14,000. - There are two items that applied only to the Tesla. One is a spare tire for $800. (The Ford comes with a spare.) The other is a charging station at a cost of $1000 for hardware and installation. - The department is getting two shifts per day on a single charge and charging the vehicle overnight. This is assumed to be the usage pattern of future Teslas, so the conservative assumption on charging is that the charging equipment expense will be required for each Tesla procured and it is included in the Next vehicle. There could potentially be a savings opportunity in the future with a dual-port charger. - The costs were calculated based on driving 23,060 miles in a year. It is believed an EQG concept will be unveiled at the show to preview the production model arriving either next year or in 2023. Confirmed technical specifications are not available at this point, but it's safe to assume it will have dual electric motors to enable a four-wheel-drive system everyone expects from a G. - EQG won't be a dedicated electric vehicle as it's the case with the flagship EQS and the upcoming EQE, with both getting SUV versions in 2022. Instead, the EQG is believed to take the shape of an electric adaptation of the combustion-engined G-Class. It's said to have all the off-road tricks of the conventionally powered model along with a large 108-kWh battery with enough juice for about 311 miles (500 kilometers) of range Original Source : https://www.motor1.com/news/521003/mercedes-eqg-iaa-munich-2021/ LIGHTYEAR ONE WILL BE MANUFACTURED BY VALMET AUTOMOTIVE - Valmet Automotive, a manufacturing contractor who also delivered the Fisker Karma, the original Porsche Boxter and Cayman, and multiple Saab and Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Henrik Fisker was born in a small town in Denmark in the 1960s. He loved taking rides on Danish country roads with his father in the family's Saab 96 sedan. One day a Maserati blew past them and Henrik instantly discovered his life's passion: Cool cars. He first went to work for BMW where he designed the Z8 and later was recruited by Aston Martin to develop the DB9 and Vantage. In 2007, Henrik founded Fisker Automotive where he designed and developed the Fisker Karma, an electrified supercar. That company met trouble when its battery supplier, A123 Systems, went bankrupt. Today, Henrik is back, building a new company called Fisker Inc. His first product will be the Fisker Ocean, an all-electric SUV that will start deliveries in Q4 2022. In our Winning in Asia conversation,. Getting electric vehicles on the road and putting those keys in the hands of drivers has certainly had its speed bumps. There's the whole battery technology issue, an area where progress seems to sometimes move at a snail's pace. Then, the high costs that made owning one of these cars out of reach for anyone who wasn't a celebrity, a politician, or independently wealthy. How can EV manufacturers solve this problem? We've all wondered if we might ever actually see affordable EVs enter the mainstream. But today, despite all of the setbacks, that moment is almost here. The keys to one of these beautiful, sustainably operated vehicles are closer than ever to landing in the hands of drivers, offering the EV experience to the mainstream at a surprising level of affordability. Today's guest is designer and entrepreneur Henrik Fisker, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Fisker, Inc. He's spent his life sketching out some of the most beautiful, iconic vehicles of his generation. Fisker's eye for design and creative approach to innovation have made him an important voice in the conversation around electric vehicles. On today’s show, host Jeremy Barnett interviews Fisker Inc.’s Chairman and CEO Henrik Fisker. Fisker is synonymous with iconic cars and leadership in electric vehicle development with a passion for technology and futuristic design. Fisker is a risk-taking, innovation-loving, protocol-challenging designer and entrepreneur who turns dreams into reality, and never gives up. American by nationality and Danish by birth, Fisker’s many past and present global entrepreneurial endeavors are headlined by his current role as the Chairman and CEO of Fisker Inc. – founded in 2016 as his second automotive company. The world's first digital car company, with the “vision” of a clean future for all, and a mission of “Making the World’s most sustainable vehicles”. Fisker designed the 2022 Fisker Ocean all electric SUV, set to disrupt the automotive market through its unique design, extreme sustainability, technical features and affordability. Celebrated as a true iconic figure in the industry, Fisker was behind some of the most emotionally appealing vehicles ever created. The Fisker Karma was the world’s first luxury plug-in hybrid, launched in 2011, where Henrik demonstrated his creative genius in creating, for the first time, an electric vehicle with stunning proportions integrated with sustainable innovations such as a full-length solar roof, vegan interior, and adjustable regenerative braking. Henrik led the development of the iconic BMW Z8 sports car – with James Bond at the wheel in the 1999 blockbuster film, The World Is Not Enough. As president and chief executive officer of BMW Designworks USA, his creation of the Z8 Roadster took the globe by storm, while his stints at Aston Martin as board member and design director resulted in the turnaround of Aston Martin through the famed DB9/V8 Vantage, that to this day is the most sold Aston Martin ever. Tune in to get some RAD nuggets from Henrik Fisker as he discussed his company’s mission and what “drives” him…..Pun intended! On this week’s episode of The Energy Gang: big energy companies are putting together bids for multi- renewable power -- and it’s merchant. Global investment in offshore wind more than quadrupled in the first half of this year. More new wind farms were approved at the height of the pandemic than during all last year. Some of offshore projects include storage, and even hydrogen. Some of them include floating solar panels. Is this what the future of projects looks like for oil & gas majors? Then, is green hydrogen here to stay? One Saudi project unveiled last month is at gigawatt scale. Another major utility is getting out of America’s largest coal plant and making investments in solar-generated hydrogen. Bloom Energy is even making electrolyzers. What does this activity tell us? And last, there’s a reason Henrik Fisker hasn’t gone away, even after the demise of the Fisker Karma. We dive into the new Fisker Ocean SUV and a spate of other electric car announcements and ask: Does parity on EV prices even matter? When Tesla first announced its upcoming Model Y all-electric crossover in March of this year, it was forced to share the stage with Audi, who also unveiled plans for its Q4 e-Tron around the same time. Both vehicles have release dates in 2020 and both target the popular crossover segment with close to 300 miles per charge. And while the two brands, known for luxury, intuitive interiors, will find formidable competition in one another, they shouldn’t forget to swivel – as competition seems to be coming from all sides. The latest is from Fisker Inc., the second auto company started by designer Henrik Fisker… the first being Fisker Automotive, the electric vehicle maker that made more than one splash – its Fisker Karma extended range luxury electric was a first of its kind, garnering the company many high-profile investors, including celebs like Leonardo DiCaprio. Then, in 2012, they went bankrupt because, at that time, that’s what you did if you were an electric car company. But Fisker the man had gotten out by then and just moved right along with his plans for electric domination and now, it appears, he’s ready to strike. In the year 2021, Fisker will begin producing the unnamed crossover and has priced it “under $40,000” which is right in the Model Y sweet spot, as Elon Musk has promised they’d start around $39K.According to Digital Trends, the Fisker will feature “an 80-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack affording around 300 miles of range, but it’s keeping other details under wraps for now.” The company is reportedly hoping to build these crossovers here in America, and is scouting factory locations in several states. Like Tesla, Fisker will skip the dealer network thing and sell its vehicles direct to consumers. So if you’re looking for a nice, semi-affordable electric crossover, you’ll have some choices in 2020. But if you wait til ’21, you’ll have even more.
Show #445 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 16th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. ANDERS HOVE – PATREON EXECUTIVE PRODUCER: “I was listening this morning to your guesses about the pronunciation of AI.ME. Since the concept was released at the Shanghai auto show, and could be intended for China, this is probably a play on words, since "ai" is the verb "to love." It'S pronounced the same as "aye" in "aye aye, captain." So "aye ... me.". Reasons to have Sentry Mode: An email from Brian Thompson. “Willie Singletary, Council Candidate Hits Tesla Model 3 with Escalade and leaves scene.” AUTO SHANGHAI 2019: THE ELECTRIC VEHICLES TO LOOK FORWARD TO "it's no surprise that the Auto Shanghai 2019, which begins on April 16, will have more EVs and EV concepts on display than you can point a finger at. Here's some of the ones that we think will stand out." says Overdrive.in. Their picks are: Possibly of most interest to us is the production version of the Renault K-ZE. As the looks suggest, this will be the electric version of the Renault Kwid. It will be based on a heavily modified version of the Kwid's CMF-A platform and will have a 250 km range. The Buick Velite 6 is a heavily revised version of the second generation Chevrolet Volt. The PHEV version debut first and be powered by the same 1.5 litre petrol motor and 18.4 kWh battery pack. The full EV version is expected to have a 85 kW motor with a claimed range of 291 km." They also rate the NIO EP7 performance sedan, the Audi Q2 etron which is like an electric A2 for China only, the Aston Martin Rapide E and the Geely GE 11 - "the first global model from Geely's newly-created EV brand "Geely New Energy". Internationally it will be available under the Geometry brand. " http://overdrive.in/news-cars-auto/auto-shanghai-2019-the-electric-vehicles-to-look-forward-to/ RENAULT KWID EV (CITY K-ZE) REVEALED AT SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW "Renault has showcased the production version of the Kwid EV at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show. The EV is based on the same CMF-A platform as the Kwid, albeit with a few modifications to accommodate batteries and an electric motor. However the specifications of the same haven't been revealed yet." reports ZigWheels: "while it has not been officially revealed, the City K-ZE will have an approximate range close to 250Km. Inside, the cabin remains largely similar to the Kwid with a functional setup. Key highlights include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system which also gets online navigation, real time monitoring for EV features, 4G WiFi and voice recognition. the Renault City K-ZE packs PM2.5 sensors and an air quality control system, which evaluates cabin air quality and switches between interior and exterior air circulation automatically. It also gets features like a rear camera and a tyre pressure monitoring system." https://www.zigwheels.com/news-features/news/renault-kwid-ev-city-kze-revealed-at-shanghai-motor-show/33576/ NEW NIO ET PREVIEW ELECTRIC CAR REVEALED IN SHANGHAI "At the Auto Shanghai 2019, Chinese EV startup NIO showed off its all new sedan product lineup with the ET Preview and exhibited its entire NIO Power service solution as well as some cutting-edge technologies such as the 220kW permanent magnet synchronous motor electric drivetrain." reports Gasgoo for InsideEVs.com "The EV maker also showcased such products as the high-performance electric flagship ES8 SUV; the high-performance long-range, intelligent electric ES6 SUV; the ultrafast electric car, the EP9; the NIO EVE Vision car and NIO Formula E Team car, the NIO 004." https://insideevs.com/new-nio-et-preview-electric-car-revealed/ KARMA DEBUTS BEAUTIFUL PININFARINA DESIGNED ELECTRIC COUPE "Aside from the Karma Revero GT (yes, it’s an updated variant of the Fisker Karma from 2016) which is a production vehicle going on sale soon, Karma Automotive has an interesting two-door concept debuting at the 2019 Auto Shanghai. The so-called Pininfarina GT is based on the Revero GT and, as its name suggests, has been designed by Pininfarina." according to Anthony Karr from Motor1.com: "The official press release says this is the “first result of a partnership with Pininfarina, the iconic Italian design and engineering house,” which hints at potential future products developed in cooperation between the two companies. While the coupe has the exterior dimensions of the Revero GT, the overall appearance is sportier thanks to the shorter rear overhang and the long hood. We believe the two-door vehicle has the same powertrain as the Revero GT, which means there’s a BMW-sourced 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine, an onboard electric generator, and two electric motors for a combined output of 535 horsepower (399 kilowatts) and 550 pound-feet (746 lb-ft) of torque." https://insideevs.com/karma-debuts-pininfarina-electric-coupe/ ELECTRA MECCANICA SHIPS SOLO FROM CHINA TO NORTH AMERICA "Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker, Electra Meccanica Vehicle, has signed a contract with Crane Worldwide Logistics to move its single-passenger, three-wheel Solo model from its assembly plant in Chongqing to the ports of Los Angeles in the US and Vancouver, Canada." according to the website Automotive Logistics: "Electra Meccanica is currently ramping up mass production of its Solo electric vehicle at its Chongqing manufacturing facility in China for delivery to customers there and abroad in 2019. According to official figures from the EV maker it has 64,000 pre-orders on its books." https://automotivelogistics.media/news/157291 HYUNDAI & H2E: 1,600 FUEL CELL TRUCKS FOR EUROPE "Hyundai and the Swiss company H2 Energy (H2E) have confirmed their commitment to establishing a joint venture called Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility. The JV’s first goal is to open up the European hydrogen mobility ecosystem with fuel cell trucks." writes Carrie Hamel for electrive.com: "Hyundai will supply a total of 1,600 fuel cell-powered heavy trucks to Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility from 2019 to 2025 – 600 more than originally announced in a memorandum of understanding signed in 2018 between H2E and Hyundai. The Swiss company H2E specialises in the production and supply of renewable hydrogen in Switzerland with subsidiaries in Germany, Norway and Austria and they will be responsible for marketing the fleet." https://www.electrive.com/2019/04/15/hyundai-h2e-1600-fuel-cell-trucks-for-european-market/ MINI SURVEY CLAIMS CUSTOMERS ARE HAPPY WITH 75 MILES OF EV RANGE "In this survey from MINI USA, the brand asked 1,004 adults over the age of 18 (502 men and 502 women) a series of questions to determine what a necessary average range. While the questions asked were not disclosed to us, the brand claims that a resulting average range of 75 miles was deemed “sufficient”." says BMW blog: "MINI also learned from this survey that the majority of customers find EVs to be best used in city driving or for commuting. The latter of which is assuming it’s a relatively short commute. This information is likely to factor into the size of battery packs used in upcoming EV MINIs. The first one to come is the upcoming MINI E, which is said to use the same 42.2 kWh battery pack as the BMW i3 and get around 120 miles of range." https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/04/15/mini-survey-claims-customers-are-happy-with-75-miles-of-ev-range/ TESLA'S CONSTANT PRICE CHANGES FRUSTRATE BUYERS "Last week, Tesla changed the prices on their cars again. In just the last few months there have been a huge number of price changes, particularly on the Model 3" says a Forbes article which goes on to track every price change since, a 12 point list which follows the changing face of Autopilot and the $35,000 Model 3 which came and (partially) went. It's a toughtful article by Brad Templeton and talks about buyers remorse, how cellphones have been commodotised. "Elon Musk has had a few things to say about this. First, he points out that prices on other maker's cars fluctuate all the time due to specials, dealer rebates, and plain old negotiation. He says Tesla is just doing it transparently and should not be blamed for doing the right thing. There is some merit to this, but the fact that somebody can get $3,000 off a car by negotiating at the dealer does not affect the price of existing cars nearly as much. He also points out that Teslas, unlike other cars before them, keep getting new features with software updates, which are given to all owners whose cars can handle them." https://www.forbes.com/sites/bradtempleton/2019/04/15/teslas-constant-price-changes-frustrate-buyers-even-more-is-likely-as-cars-become-computers/#6bba873e5da9 TOYOTA SELLS ELECTRIC CAR TECHNOLOGY TO CHINESE STARTUP IN RETURN FOR GREEN CAR CREDITS "Toyota has agreed to sell its electric car technology to Chinese startup Singulato, in a move which will give it preferential rights to buy green credits under China’s new quota system for electric vehicles (EVs)." according to City AM newspaper: "The green car credit system, introduced in January, requires a significant portion of car makers’ production or imports in China must be electric or hybrid. Those that do not meet the quota themselves can purchase credits from rivals that exceed it, but if they do not have enough credits they face government fines for their operations in China. Singulato is developing a mini EV which it hopes to release later this year. This will generate credits for the startup, some of which Toyota will then purchase. Toyota has already said that initially it won’t be able to meet its quotas without buying credits from others." http://www.cityam.com/276295/toyota-sells-electric-car-technology-chinese-startup-return CHEVY BOLT EUV NAME TRADEMARKED, ELECTRIC CROSSOVER COMING? "An interesting patent filing by General Motors hints the upcoming second electric vehicle from the automaker could be a high-riding machine. First unearthed by GM Authority, the Bolt EUV moniker has been trademarked by GM earlier this month and will be used for “motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles.” says Motor1.com today: "As GM Authority reports, the name is probably going to be used for Chevrolet’s next Bolt-based EV. In March this year, the American manufacturer confirmed it will build the all-electric car at its Orion facility where the Bolt is currently produced. A new $300-million investment in the factory was also confirmed and a plan for approximately 400 new jobs at the site." https://www.motor1.com/news/344658/chevrolet-bolt-euv-trademark-rumors/ WHY TESLA DEFINES AMERICAN LUXURY, NOT CADILLAC OR LINCOLN "Americans are at our best when we look forward instead of at what others are doing. Cadillac and Lincoln used to epitomize this idea." says MotorTrend: "While Cadillac has spent the past three decades copying BMW's homework, and Lincoln spent the same time building cost-cut, rebadged Fords and Mercurys, the soul of American luxury escaped Detroit. Today, it has settled in sunny California. Tesla's tech and engineering is class leading, and delivers benchmark EV performance and range. And the vehicles are (relatively) expensive, requiring early adopters to be of a certain socio-economic status. They have become part of the fabric of today's luxury consumer society, a car many buyers of mainstream automobiles now aspire to own because of what it would say about their own status. Tesla is therefore a genuine modern luxury brand." https://www.motortrend.com/news/why-tesla-defines-american-luxury-not-cadillac-lincoln/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. The ArtCenter College of Design, right here in SoCal, is one of the top schools for transportation and automotive designers around the world. So it's logical that the school host an annual exhibit showcasing the works of it's best and brightest. From concepts to classics. Exotics to muscle. This year's ArtCenter Car Classic provided something for everyone. And rightfully so, as the theme of this year's car show highlighted the school's 70-years of contributions to the automotive industry. This is a favorite of iDriveSoCal's Professor, Clinton Quan, and he, of course, was in attendance and joined me for this iDSC podcast. Click play below and scroll down to enjoy the pics of these awe-inspiring works of art! ***Transcription*** Recorded October 30, 2018, in Los Angeles, CA 70-Years of Automotive Influence Clinton Quan: Some of the most prominent automotive designers in the world... What was great about this car show because it was celebrating 70-years of the colleges Transportation Design Program, you got to see a little bit of everything. There were American cars there, European automobiles, Japanese cars, even Hyundai, that's a Korean car. Tom Smith: Welcome to iDriveSoCal, the podcast all about mobility from the automotive capital of the United States, Southern California. Tom Smith here with the good professor Mr. Clinton Quan, say "Hello" Clinton. Clinton Quan: Hi Tom. Tom Smith: Hello my friend. We are podcasting this evening at an undisclosed location downtown Los Angeles California. We're covering the ArtCenter College of Design their annual shindig that the good professor goes to each year. Did we cover this last year? No, we didn't cover this last year. Clinton Quan: No we did not. Tom Smith: But we talked about the College ArtCenter of Design in one of our podcasts that we did, yeah on why Southern California is the not only the automotive capital of the United States... But also the automotive capital of the world; because of all of these reasons. One of these reasons being that we have the College ArtCenter of Design, am I saying that right? Clinton Quan: ArtCenter College of Design "Some of the most prominent automotive designers in the world..." Tom Smith: ArtCenter College of Design here in Southern California which has put out a number of names that we know of but... Clinton Quan: Some of the most prominent automotive designers in the world. Tom Smith: And for those of you listen to the podcast myself included, Chip Foose right is one of the names? Clinton Quan: Well I don't know if he graduated from ArtCenter. Tom Smith: Oh really? You Know the Vehicle Designs Clinton Quan: I don't know right off the top of my head. He's very well known. Tom Smith: Was Fisker from there? Clinton Quan: Yes he was at the event. Tom Smith: No, no, but did he graduate from the school? Clinton Quan: I believe so I don't know why he would be there. Tom Smith: What I'm getting to is there's a lot of designers that have graduated from this school and we might not know the name of the designers. But, we definitely know the names of their cars that they've designed. The names of the manufacturers they've designed those cars for. And, we've seen their cars as the entire world has seen their cars driving around roads, again all over the world. Clinton Quan: I mean if he didn't graduate I would assume he has some relationship to the school. Tom Smith: And it just so happens that Henrik Fisker and I don't know if it's Henrik or [pronunciation] Henrik, how they pronounce it. Clinton Quan: That's a good question, I don't know. Tom Smith: But nevertheless, the Fisker Karma was, well there's a whole history about that and they had a Fisker Karma there. I digress. ArtCenter College of Design has an annual automotive show and you go every year. Clinton Quan: Yeah, almost every year. Tom Smith: And that's what we're covering in this podcast. This years show,
Southern California is well known as the automotive capital of the United States - and the world - for many reasons. The ArtCenter of Design is highly regarded within the automotive and transportation industries. With fossil fuels polluting the earth’s atmosphere and being in finite supply, technological advances in renewable energy such as solar, hydropower and wind are becoming more essential for our future. Batteries are at the core of making renewables power possible. Our guest today is Duwayno Robertson. He’s an expert on batteries for future-forward automobiles and renewable energy systems. Duwayno was a Fisker Automotive lead engineer overseeing everything that interacted with the battery, helping to create the ahead-of-it’s-time Fisker Karma eco-luxury automobile with its solar paneled roof and groundbreaking hybrid engine. Since then he’s worked at two leading renewable-energy companies: Aquion and AGL, building a sustainable energy future. We explore a full range of renewable energy opportunities and challenges. And we look at potential breakthroughs on the horizon. More at http://www.mindandmachine.io

Henrik Fisker the iconic automotive designer is interviewed by David Cogan of the Eliances Heroes radio show amfm. Fisker discusses car design and how inspiration comes from sketching and thinking about what he wants to see on the road. Fisker is a real creator, entrepreneur, innovator, mentor, and brand ambassador that has designed such iconic cars and James Bond style Ashton Martins, BMWs, V8 Vantage, Fisker Karma, Viking Motorcycles, Rocket, Destino and Force 1. Passion drives creation of his dream vehicles. He talks about how not all designs work and the difficulty of designing cars. From childhood to now he's always loved cars and wanted to be a designer. True vision and american design school helped him get his start.
Back in 2011 when the original Fisker Karma was released, seeing it on the road was breathtaking. The vehicle turned heads with its beautiful designs so there was never a problem with looks. The issues for this electric/hybrid car were technical. From breaking down during a Consumer Reports drive to actual customer cars catching fire, it proved too much for the startup automaker and it filed for bankruptcy in November 2013. However, its new Chinese owners believe they have worked out all the problems and are ready to re-commence production of the car. And the man chosen to run Karma Automotive is no stranger to Detroit. Jim Taylor, who formerly ran Cadillac, will now be responsible for selling the Karma 2.0 to the world. Joining John McElroy to talk to Jim about Karma, Cadillac and more will be Joe White for Reuters and Dave Guilford from Automotive News.
