The Hyundai Santa Fe midsize crossover has been successful for multiple generations in the United States, but it is expected to leap to an even higher level with the imminent introduction of the all-new 2024 version. Host Jack Nerad drove the vehicle on and off the road at a recent introductory event outside Nashville, and he got the opportunity for a detailed sit-down interview with Hyundai product planner Mike Evanoff. In many ways, the new Santa Fe is a breakthrough that we expect will find a very receptive audience here in the United States. Hyundai's Evanoff describes the meticulous efforts the Hyundai designers made to prepare the new vehicle, and he'll detail his own camping trip in it as well. We'll have the exclusive interview for you in this edition of America on the Road. In the road test segment, Co-Host Chris Teague will outline his recent week-long stint at the wheel of the 2024 Subaru Ascent. That crossover is the largest in the Subaru lineup, and Teague compares and contrasts it with his family's Volvo XC90. The vehicles have some striking similarities. Also, in our road tests, Jack Nerad will describe his lengthy driving experience with the extremely pleasant 2024 Genesis G70. The midsize sedan isn't the sportiest in the segment, but it might well be the best value, and Nerad will tell you why. Leading the news this week, Jeep has pulled the wraps off four fascinating concept vehicles in Moab, and we'll tell you all about them. Volkswagen is on the verge of launching an all-new battery-electric vehicle brand in the United States, and if you think the timing might be a little suspect, well, perhaps we do, too. We'll tell you more. One thing about which there is no question is auto dealers' ire at the new Environmental Protection Agency regs that will require them to sell more EVs. One very prominent dealer says the regulations leave consumers out of the equation, and we'll have details. Kia just introduced an all-new vehicle—the K4—at the New York Auto Show. We'll tell you what it is, what it replaces, and give you our reaction soon. So we have a whale of a show this Easter weekend. Thanks for joining us. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

Starting things off this week is the 2024 BMW i5 M60, a near-600 horsepower all-electric sedan that Benjamin seems impressed with, especially in comparison to the Mercedes-AMG EQE from last week. But every BMW comes with its hiccups and gimmicks, and Benjamin is more than eager to share his experience with this high-end German, and how the new executive sport sedan feels. Then Sami gets his three-row on by talking about not just one, but two family oriented crossovers. The discussion starts with the 2024 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, which seems to be the default three-row for families looking to grow from their RAV4. Then the guys go on to talk about Sami's recently tested 2024 Subaru Ascent, and how the brand has recieved a lot of credit for its steady approach to the market. Thanks for listening!!

Ashley writes in today's ditch the drive-through recipe, Caprice Chicken. If you're not in first trimester survival mode, this recipe is for you. First, gather your ingredients: thin sliced chicken breasts, cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, basal glaze, fresh basil. Cook the chicken on the stove top in a pan with some olive oil or avocado oil, salt pepper, Italian seasoning, whatever sounds good. Once about halfway through, flip the chicken and throw in some grape or cherry tomatoes. Keep them in long enough for them to start blistering. Once chicken is nearly cooked, cover with slices of mozzarella, so it starts to melt onto the chicken. Once finished, drizzle the balsamic glaze on top and garnish with fresh basil. Serve with a veggie or bagged salad and rice, pasta, or potatoes. → To share your ditch the drive-through recipe with us, call (959) CAR-POOL and leave us a message! → Write in your advice questions! Before 2018, Subaru's three-row efforts hadn't exactly been noteworthy. In fact, more people talk about the odd rear seats in the bed of the Brat than think about the short-lived Tribeca nameplate. Despite existing for nearly a decade, the Tribeca didn't help put Subaru's three-row efforts on the map. Though, in a market dominated by crossovers, it was only a matter of time before Subaru would take another bite at the three-row apple. Well, that time came in 2018 with the release of the 2019 Ascent. The Ascent takes what makes Subaru crossovers successful and stretches it enough to make space for a third row of seats. Naturally, powering this Ascent is a 2.4-liter boxer 4 that sends 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque through a CVT and into the standard all-wheel-drive system. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek executive editor Tom Murphy hops behind the '23 Subaru Ascent to put it through its paces. Murphy takes you on a guided tour of the Subaru Ascent and highlights some of his favorite features. Murphy also takes you along a live drive review of Subaru's three-row crossover. Alongside these segments, Murphy chats with host Wesley Wren about the Subaru Ascent, Subaru's history with crossovers, and more. The pair also discuss the Subaru Ascent's position in the perpetually growing crossover space. Closing the show, the two break down what makes the Ascent special.

Long-lost Suntrup sis joins Lizz and Kelly today. Sydney is a 2000's model Suntrup and brings a Gen Z flair to the show with a bit of slang, Q&A, and a college-friendly ditch the drive through. Kelly's been practicing her maid of honor speech in the car and Sydney doles out some tips on how she can be both funny and heartfelt. Kelly deems that anything less than pure excellences will be a failure. Q&A with Sydney covers how she got started with rowing, her love affair with little sedans, and her quirky sense of style. She shares about her double major and masters degree plans and then…reveals who her favorite Suntrup sibling is. Today's great eight is a worst eight all about what the gals hate about summer. Sweat, bugs, burns, laundry, and shaving make an appearance as Lizz, Kelly, and Sydney remember the most dreadful days of summer. In quake-worthy industry news, Toyota pushes back on criticism about their lack of electric vehicle progress and the gals love it. After all, not everyone wants to drive an EV right now. To top off this episode's industry updates, the brand new Subaru Ascent is getting a facelift and 2.9 million Ford vehicles are recalled. A new noodle goes a long way when you want to ditch the drive through and Sydney leaves us with a pasta dinner that's easy, spicy, and Gigi Hadid inspired. You might have heard that North Americans only get the 2022 Volkswagen Golf in enthusiast grade GTI and R forms. Recently, Benjamin picked up the keys to the more powerful of the two, and while there was a massive winter storm blowing snow during his testing, it wasn't the weather conditions that left him cold. Hear what VW has done to the most recent generation Golf R and whether Benjamin would recommend it. Sami then talks about how Subaru reached relevancy with its Ascent three-row back when it launched, but has struggled to do anything worthwhile with it since. Is the basic family crossover still good enough for 2022 or is the competition's more premium and powerful entries stealing the spotilgiht? Finally, Sami and Benjamin discuss another forbidden-fruit market segment: the 'Ute. Once mildly popular in North America, the 'ute was a bigger deal in other parts of the world. The duo ponder why and try to figure out if there are any hopes for more 'utes for us in the future. Be sure to subscribe, rate, and send us a note on our website UnnamedAutomotivePodcast.com

We touch on a number of topics this week, including if a used Subaru Ascent is a good replacement for an Audi A4, why your infotainment system might not play nice with your Apple iPhone or Android phone, the right way to tie down an object to your roof, and how Consumer Reports headlight testing differs from that of IIHS. We also discuss routine maintenance that is unique to EVs, why an automatic emergency braking system might give a driver false positives, how car designs might be affected with a move to "skateboard" or modular architectures, using a child seat with an inflatable seat belt, and why you might not be able to tow a hybrid vehicle behind your RV. ----------------------------------- Have a question for our experts? We get started with a voicemail from Maggie’s mom, which is why you all need to call or text us and leave us a voicemail question, or tip and we will play it on the air - 404-981-3370. In her voicemail she asks if you should take a 0% car loan if a car dealer is offering one and use your money to invest or pay cash for the car. This is our 50th podcast episode, and it’s actually a very fitting topic as we dig into the importance of having friends challenge you on purchases, especially big ones. Sometimes friends and peer pressure can have negative consequences on your finances and convince you to do things that aren’t so responsible, but the good things about having “friends on FIRE” is that they are challenging you to do the opposite. Friends on FIRE are friends that challenge you to make more thoughtful and responsible decisions for the right reasons. Maggie wants to buy a 2020 Subaru Ascent, and her top justifications for buying a new car, and this specific car, include:A car with a 3rd row / towing capacity - Maggie has 3 kids and wants to be able to travel with extra family members and their kid’s friends, take their 5 bikes on trips with them, and more. She likes the idea of a new car as she’s very clean and treats things more nicely than most people. She can afford it and would pay cash for it, and it doesn’t affect her retirement timeline. She works hard and wants to treat herself. She likes Subarus. Mike asks Maggie many questions, including:The cost of the carThe cost of her current car and how long she’s had itThe cost of the previous car before that and how long she had itTrade-in value for her current carNumber of years she commits to driving this new carThe longest period of time she’s ever owned a carMike’s supportive of Maggie buying a used car that better meets her family’s needs, but he’s not supportive of buying a new car or this specific car. Mike’s rebuttal reasons to Maggie for how he would think about a purchase like this as a framework for her decision. This same framework could be used for any large purchase decision:You can find a used car with all of the similar bells and whistles for half the cost of this new Subaru. Mike breaks down the cost difference of the new car and specific brand Maggie wants, of $40-50K vs. a car with all the functional benefits of what her family needs for $20K. The simple things and functional needs can be found in a $20K car (vs. a $40-50K car). He asks questions of whether the brand, a new car, etc are worth a premium $20-25K to Maggie. Just because you have money doesn’t mean you should spend it. Brands and not getting hung up on a specific brand. It’s all marketing. Maggie can’t even explain why she’s so enamored with Subarus, but she is.Mike goes through a “how much is it worth to you” exercise with Maggie, and it does challenge some of her thinking of what premium she’s willing to pay for a new car and for a Subaru Ascent specifically. Our top 3 takeaways for this episode:Encourage your friends to challenge your purchases. Your friends are friends because you share values, so their feedback will help you.Cars are still the worst. By worst we mean they can be one of your biggest life expenses when in reality they are really a utility to get you from point A to point B.Understand the premium you are paying and what exactly you are paying it for. If you still want to make the purchase, at least you have been honest with yourself.---Show ReferencesFriends on FIRE episode #9 - Cars at the WorstSubaru Ascent---Follow friends on FIRETwitterInstagramFacebookLinkedInLeave us a voicemail or text us: 404-981-3370eMail us at: friendsonfiremm@gmail.comVisit our website: www.friendsonfire.org---Other LinksMaggie’s Blog: Mostly Minimal LifeMike’s Book: Your New Relationship with Money

Technology let us down near the end of this episode, but we got in a good discussion of the 2020 Lexus UX250h Luxury, Hyundai Venue, Subaru Ascent and Toyota Highlander. For news, we talked about manuals returning to MINI, the next generation RWD I-6 Mazda 6, and the new Genesis G80. We finish up with some commentary about destination charges and we managed to answer at least one question about how the industry is holding up during this crisis before our app decided it'd had enough.

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid and the Kia K900 to the Toyota Camry. These four diverse vehicles are on the list of the 2019 Best Cars and Trucks of the Year, announced by The Weekly Driver Podcast. Podcast co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss the list on episode #116 of the weekly program that reports on all things automotive. The 2019 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is among the top-10 Cars and Trucks of 2019, according to Bruce Aldrich and James Raia, co-hosts of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Image © James Raia. As is our logical way, we wait until the end of the year to name our selections. As in previous years, the 2019 choices were selected only from the list of 35-40 cars and trucks manufacturers provided for weekly reviews for my weekly syndicated automotive column. It's published by Bay Area News Group in San Jose, California, Motors Matters in Delaware and Gulfshore Business in Naples, Florida. Bruce also drove most of the cars on the list and we have a lively discussion during the podcast. Which is to say, we disagreed on some of the choices. The 10 vehicles on the 2019 Best Cars and Trucks list include manufacturers from the United States, South Korea and Japan. The Weekly Driver has been writing about our main automotive vent for years. How do prestigious industry publications determine their vehicles-of-the-year selections before the calendar year starts? Selecting a list of the year's best at the end of the calendar year makes sense. How can a 2020 list be announced (several have) in December of 2019 when not all of the 2020 models vehicles are available. Here's the list in alphabetical order of the 2019 Best Cars and Trucks of the Year: Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, GMC Sierra, Honda Civic, Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid, Infiniti QX80, Kia K900, Lexus LS500, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Camry. The Kia K900 is among The Weekly Driver Podcast's 2019 Best Cars and Trucks. All of the vehicles on the list are reviewed on The Weekly Driver.com.
It's Freaky Friday on this week's podcast as the pair swap SUVS they each drove last month. Sami interviews the SRT braintrust about the Ram SRT10 pickup and the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, and Benjamin goes on a journey of self-discovery in the 2019 Subaru Ascent, which has no fewer than 19 cupholders. Or is that 18? The only way to know for sure is to listen to our final episode of the year.
Subaru loyalists with large families, rejoice! The 2019 Ascent has finally arrived. With three rows of seating it’s large enough to handle kids, dogs and mass quantity of bath tissue (though I’m pretty sure I’m the only one that matters to). I test a Premium model with Symmetrical all-wheel drive, because they all come with all-wheel drive.
We've finished testing the 2019 Subaru Ascent, and let you know how it stacks up against competitors like the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, and Mazda CX-9. We also discuss the unveiling of the all-electric Audi E-Tron SUV, as well as startup automaker Lucid securing $1 billion in funding. We've finished testing our 2018 Mazda6. We discuss our final impressions on the midsized sedan and where we think it stacks up against its competitors. We answer a number of audience questions this week, including one about our best advice when negotiating the price of a car with a dealership. We also talk about the Subaru Ascent recall, and remind Volkswagen diesel owners that time is running out to file a claim for settlement compensation. ----------------------------------- Subscribe to Talking Cars on Apple Podcasts! Robbie is sick this week and his voice is shot, so it's just Sam and Nicole. Nicole has been driving the Subaru Ascent while Sam had the Lexus RX450h+ plug-in hybrid.Hyundai made lots of news this week at its investor day as well as during a drive program in California. Its new 3-row electric crossover, the Ioniq 9 will launch production in 2025 at the new Savannah, GA factory and in 2026, Hyundai will launch an extended range EV (EREV). But before the Ioniq 9 arrives, Hyundai will be producing the Ioniq 5 at the new factory beginning in October. Along with a mild styling refresh and bigger batteries, the Ioniq 5 is getting an SAE J3400/NACS charging port. 3 weeks after the regular Ioniq 5, Hyundai will start production of the Ioniq 5 XRT for those that can't wait for the Rivian R3. Hyundai will also build a limited production version of the N Vision 74 concept.Sam and Nicole both drove the new Volvo EX90 electric 3-row SUV (everyone else is building 3-row EVs, why can't Ford?). Nicole also got to drive the new gas fueled Chevy Equinox. Walter Chrysler's great grandson is offering to buy the Chrysler and Dodge brands from Stellantis and we have interviews with Luminar CEO Austin Russell and Volvo's Thomas Broberg.LinksHyundai to Build Ioniq 9 in US, offer EREVsHyundai investor daySam's Volvo EX90 first driveNicole's Volvo EX90 review2025 Hyundai Ioniq 52025 Chevrolet EquinoxHyundai N Vision 74 productionWalter Chrysler descendant wants to buy Chrysler and DodgeVolvo Interview Gary KalsariaOur Sponsors:* Check out Express VPN: https://expressvpn.com/WHEELBEARINGSAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Meanwhile Dan learns that you can trail-brake a Toyota Sienna minivan before jumping into the Subaru Ascent. Tesla has released a less than fully baked Smart Summon feature and AAA tests a bunch of other driver assist systems that serve to demonstrate that human drivers need to stay alert. Our Sponsors:* Check out Express VPN: https://expressvpn.com/WHEELBEARINGSAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
