fWotD Episode 2927: Tesla Model S Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 10 May 2025, is Tesla Model S.The Tesla Model S is a battery-electric, four-door full-size car produced by the American automaker Tesla since 2012. The automaker's second vehicle and longest-produced model, critics have called the Model S one of the most significant and influential electric cars in the industry. It is the recipient of numerous accolades, including the Motor Trend Car of the Year Award in 2013.Tesla started developing the Model S around 2007 under the codename WhiteStar. Initially, Henrik Fisker was appointed as the lead designer for the WhiteStar project; after a dispute with Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, Fisker was replaced by Franz von Holzhausen. By 2008, von Holzhausen had designed what would become the production Model S's exterior. Tesla unveiled a prototype of the vehicle in March 2009 in Hawthorne, California. In 2010, Tesla acquired a facility in Fremont, California, to produce the Model S, which was previously owned by General Motors and Toyota. Series manufacture of the car officially began at what is now known as the Tesla Fremont Factory in June 2012. Tesla carried out the final assembly for European markets at its facilities in Tilburg, the Netherlands, between 2013 and 2021. All versions of the Model S come equipped with a single-speed transmission. The car initially used an alternating current induction motor, which was replaced by a permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motor in 2019. Constructed mostly of aluminum, the Model S shares 30 percent of its components with the Model X—a crossover SUV that was introduced in 2015. The Model S has undergone several updates during its production, the most prominent ones occurring in 2016 and 2021. These updates have usually included modifications to the motor, such as changes to power or torque, revised exterior elements, and refreshed interior features. One such change included the introduction of Tesla Autopilot—a partial vehicle automation advanced driver-assistance system—which was released in 2015. To charge the Model S, Tesla operates a network of fast-charging stations. In 2015, the Model S was the world's best-selling plug-in electric vehicle. In 2012, it was included on Time's list of the Best Inventions of the Year, and the magazine later included it on its list of the 10 Best Gadgets of the 2010s in 2019. In 2014, The Daily Telegraph described the Model S as a "car that changed the world". Road & Track argued that, with the introduction of the Model S Plaid—the high-performance version of the vehicle—and features such as the yoke steering wheel, Tesla managed to turn the Model S into "perhaps one of the worst [cars in the world]." Some companies have customized the Model S into limited-edition body styles, including a hearse and a shooting brake. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Saturday, 10 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Tesla Model S on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kimberly.

fWotD Episode 2640: Aston Martin DB9 Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 27 July 2024 is Aston Martin DB9.The Aston Martin DB9 is a two-door grand touring car produced by the British carmaker Aston Martin. Designed by Ian Callum and Henrik Fisker and produced between 2004 and 2016 in Gaydon, Warwickshire, the DB9 was available as both a coupe and a convertible, the latter known as the "Volante". Succeeding the DB7, which Aston Martin produced from 1994 until 2004, the DB9 debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003, while the Volante debuted at the Detroit Auto Show in the subsequent year. The DB9, which is built upon Aston Martin's vertical/horizontal platform, employs extensive use of aluminium throughout the body. Aston Martin implemented several incremental updates to the DB9, termed "facelifts". The first two updates—which occurred in 2008 and 2010—involved minor changes to the headlights, tail-lights, engine and interior. The most noteworthy update occurred in 2012 when Aston Martin introduced a completely redesigned front fascia for the DB9. The headlights were the most significant update, which gave the car a design reminiscent of the 2011–2012 Virage. The company's racing division, Aston Martin Racing, adapted the DB9 for sports car racing in the form of the DBR9 and the DBRS9 for the FIA GT1 and the FIA GT3, respectively. They were extensively modified; the interior features were removed and the aluminium body panels were replaced by carbon fibre panels. The engine was modified in both cars to produce more horsepower and torque. Aston Martin released three special editions of the DB9: the DB9 LM, the DB9 Zagato Spyder Centennial and the DB9 GT.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Saturday, 27 July 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Aston Martin DB9 on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kevin.

The 2024 Toyota 4Runner is the last of its generation, and all indications are it is going to be missed. This week, Host Jack Nerad got a special chance to say goodbye to the old and respected warrior as he took the wheel for the last time before an all-new 2025 model-year 4Runner arrives. While many are excited about the new 4Runner and its equally new turbocharged powerplant, a similar number seem wistful about the passing of the current generation SUV, which has proven itself tough as a month-old bag of jerky. Some of its toughness stems from its venerable normally aspirated V6 engine, which just seems to keep ticking and ticking no matter how old or what obstacles are thrown in its way. Nerad will tell us more about his last hurrah with the 4Runner in this episode. In our other road test this week, Co-Host Chris Teague will put the new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek through its paces. While not as fully off-road capable as the 4Runner, it boasts some impressive off-road chops of its own. And despite its new body, it remains powered by the latest version of Subaru's famed boxer engines, another powerplant that has more than proven its worth. Teague will tell us more in the road test segment. This week our special guest is Matt DeLorenzo, author of How To Buy An Affordable Electric Car, a Tightwad's Guide to EV Ownership. An auto expert par excellence, DeLorenzo has been on the show several times before, and he always has an insightful point of view on individual cars and the car industry as a whole. Now, as electric vehicle sales have hit a lull, we'll talk with him about what is likely to end up in your driveway going forward. Will we have an all-electric future as so many have predicted? Or is an industry reset occurring before our eyes? DeLorenzo will give us his well-informed opinions. In the news this week, Jeep has confirmed it will re-launch its Renegade as a battery-electric vehicle for the 2027 model year. And it will have a base price of less than $25,000. We'll tell you more about Jeep's aggressive EV plans. Speaking of EVs, Tesla's Elon Musk will get his $56 billion pay package after all, at least if Tesla Motors' shareholders get their way. Musk has big plans for his Texas-based car company going forward, and we'll have more on that continuing saga. Another continuing saga isn't going nearly as well. Fisker Motors, an EV start-up helmed by car designer turned entrepreneur Henrik Fisker, has officially filed for bankruptcy. If everybody had an Ocean across the USA, then things would be different. But it looks like they won't. In more positive news, BMW has just pulled the curtain away from its all-new 2025 X3 small SUV. We'll have the details and our reactions to its new look. All that and more coming up this week on America on the Road. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

This Day in Legal History: Posse Comitatus Act Passed On June 18, 1878, the U.S. Congress passed the Posse Comitatus Act, a significant piece of legislation that shaped the relationship between the military and civil authorities. The Act made it a felony to use the Army to enforce domestic policies without explicit authorization from Congress or the Constitution. This law emerged from the Reconstruction era's complexities, particularly the federal military's role in enforcing laws in the Southern states post-Civil War. The term "posse comitatus" translates to "power of the county," and the Act aimed to reinforce the principle that civil authorities should maintain law and order without military involvement. The Posse Comitatus Act reflected a commitment to preventing military overreach in civilian matters and preserving democratic governance structures. This principle has influenced various legal and military policies over the years, including modern discussions on the military's role in domestic security. The Act underscores the balance between maintaining national security and protecting civil liberties, a balance that remains a cornerstone of American legal and political thought.Fisker Inc., an electric-vehicle startup, filed for bankruptcy after halting production of its problematic Ocean SUV. The company's filing in Delaware lists assets between $500 million and $1 billion and liabilities between $100 million and $500 million. This bankruptcy protects Fisker from creditors while it plans repayment.Henrik Fisker, known for designing BMW and Aston Martin cars, founded Fisker Inc., his second EV venture to face bankruptcy. His previous company, Fisker Automotive, also went bankrupt in 2013. Fisker Inc. went public in 2020 through a SPAC merger, raising roughly $1 billion and partnering with Magna International Inc. for vehicle manufacturing.Production of the Fisker Ocean SUV began in November 2022 but was plagued by missing features and software bugs. Influential YouTuber Marques Brownlee's negative review in February further damaged the company's reputation. Fisker produced over 10,000 vehicles but delivered fewer than 5,000 to customers. The company tried partnering with franchised dealers but faced significant financial difficulties, warning in February about its uncertain future. Although it secured $150 million from a lender, a potential deal with an automaker fell through. Magna International, a partner, halted further production of the Ocean SUV. Fisker's bankruptcy highlights broader challenges in the EV market, with several other startups also filing for bankruptcy amid slowing sales in the U.S. and Europe.Troubled Electric Vehicle Maker Fisker Files for BankruptcyUnion members at Amazon.com Inc. have voted overwhelmingly to align with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, a major U.S. labor organization, in a move that could significantly impact staff contract negotiations. About 98% of the Amazon Labor Union (ALU) members supported this partnership, aimed at securing better jobs and working conditions for Amazon employees. The ALU, which achieved a historic win in 2022 by organizing workers at an Amazon facility in Staten Island, faced setbacks in subsequent elections and internal conflicts. The union struggled to bring Amazon to the negotiating table. However, ALU President Chris Smalls and 15 other officials reached an agreement with Teamsters President Sean O'Brien and his team in Washington. The Teamsters represent approximately 1.3 million people. This collaboration between the ALU and the Teamsters signals a significant step forward in labor organizing efforts at Amazon, potentially increasing pressure on the company to engage in meaningful negotiations with its workers. Amazon did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside normal business hours.Amazon Union Allies With Teamsters in Big Labor AdvanceThe EPA's new limits on PFAS in drinking water are a positive step but more comprehensive regulations are needed to manage the release and disposal of these harmful chemicals. At a recent conference, stakeholders including parents, firefighters, and farmers discussed the need for broader measures to eliminate nonessential PFAS uses and enforce stricter waste management practices.CDC data shows that reducing PFAS in drinking water correlates with lower blood levels of the chemicals in residents, validating the EPA's efforts. However, the current rules do not prevent the release of PFAS into water or apply to private wells, affecting millions of people.Environmental advocates emphasized the necessity of treating PFAS as hazardous wastes under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The EPA's recent designation of certain PFAS as hazardous under the Superfund law aids cleanup efforts but falls short of comprehensive waste regulation. Proper disposal methods are critical to prevent further contamination, yet data on PFAS waste disposal is limited due to insufficient regulation.Participants called for more stringent discharge permits under the Clean Water Act and quicker implementation of hazardous waste rules. PFAS, widely used in industries like semiconductors and battery production due to their stability and resistance to damage, require robust management to prevent environmental and health risks.Examples of contamination were highlighted, including high PFAS levels from military bases causing serious health issues. The EPA's database on waste transfers shows significant amounts of PFAS-contaminated materials being sent to incinerators and other facilities, underscoring the need for better waste tracking and management.Advocates stress that eliminating unnecessary PFAS uses and implementing strong regulatory measures are essential steps to protect communities and the environment from long-term PFAS contamination.PFAS Drinking Water Limits Praised but More Regulations SoughtIn the ongoing litigation over Johnson & Johnson's (J&J) allegedly cancer-causing baby powders, a new legal battle has emerged over attorney-client privilege. Plaintiffs' lawyers accuse J&J of misusing the bankruptcy process to evade liability and are pushing for the crime-fraud exception to force the company to disclose internal communications. This could reveal J&J's strategies to limit liability in around 61,000 talc-related cases. The litigation involves J&J's use of the "Texas Two-Step," where it transfers liabilities to a subsidiary, which then files for bankruptcy. This maneuver has been met with controversy and legal challenges. Plaintiffs' attorneys argue that J&J's actions are fraudulent attempts to avoid liability and are calling for these communications to be made public to bolster their case.In a recent development, the plaintiffs are also seeking to disqualify some lawyers representing J&J and to prevent the company from proceeding with an $11 billion global settlement plan. This settlement, which requires approval from 75% of the plaintiffs, has faced opposition from some plaintiffs' firms.Despite J&J's efforts to resolve the litigation, the plaintiffs' legal team argues that more needs to be done to ensure justice for those affected by the contaminated talc products. They are also challenging J&J's use of bankruptcy as a tactic to force settlements and are pushing for the court to invalidate J&J's attorney-client privilege in this context. The outcome of this legal battle could significantly impact the strategies used in large-scale product liability cases, particularly those involving mass torts and bankruptcy.J&J's Talc Litigation Saga Gets Attorney-Client Privilege TwistThe IRS should adopt a remote-first work model to attract top talent and enhance operational efficiency. The COVID-19 pandemic proved that remote work is not only viable but also desirable for many employees, particularly in the tech sector. As the IRS continues to modernize with advanced technologies like AI and machine learning, it needs to recruit top-tier tech talent. Offering remote work can help attract this talent by allowing employees to work from anywhere, increasing job satisfaction and expanding the pool of potential applicants. The Treasury Department has found that job postings highlighting flexible working arrangements attract more applicants. Additionally, the IRS can save on overhead costs by reducing its physical office footprint, which remains significant despite many employees working remotely part-time. A remote-first approach would also help the IRS compete with private sector tech firms, which have successfully used remote work to attract employees despite offering lower salaries. This flexibility would enable the IRS to draw a diverse workforce, fostering a variety of perspectives and ideas. Existing policies limiting remote work to within 200 miles of an office need reform to maximize employee flexibility. Security is a critical concern, given the sensitive nature of taxpayer information the IRS handles. However, research indicates remote workers are often more aware of cybersecurity practices. To support a remote-first model, the IRS would need to invest in tech infrastructure and rework management and accountability measures to focus on outcomes rather than hours worked. Embracing remote work is essential for the IRS to continue modernizing and improving taxpayer interactions.IRS Should Embrace Remote-First Culture to Recruit Top Talent This is a public episode. Welcome to this week's Episode of Equity Monday. We're kicking off the week with a deep dive from this weekend into the demise of electric vehicle startup Fisker at the hands of its founders' whims. Fisker, which was founded by famed vehicle designer Henrik Fisker, is on the brink of bankruptcy after only having delivered a few thousand electric Ocean SUVs. Then, Rebecca Bellan talked about X's new rules to allow adult content (as long as it's "consensually produced," whatever that means), and why that's problematic for the safety of other users -- namely women, who are most often the targets of sexually explicit trolling and harassment. We also touched on Trump's TikTok debut, which came in the wake of the former president's felony conviction. To wrap up, Bellan also discussed a story that TechCrunch published over the weekend looking into the new trend of smaller, lesser-known investors getting shares of hot private AI companies like Anthropic, X.ai and Perplexity by using special purpose vehicles, or SPVs. The result has been a Wild West, high risk, buyer-beware situation, with SPV terms varying wildly. 'Meet the Fiskers' – Milliardærparret, der udfordrer Tesla.

The recent earnings call by Fisker Inc. disclosed the company's new strategies to speed up the delivery process for customers who have prepaid for their automobiles but haven't received them yet. In his address, Henrik Fisker, the company's CEO, revealed plans to hire more personnel, establish new facilities, and collaborate with various logistic partners to improve the efficiency of deliveries. During the earnings call, Fisker also reassured investors that the company would witness a significant boost in deliveries in November and December due to these efforts. Besides focusing on delivery concerns, Fisker Inc took notable strides during Q3 of 2023. It ramped up the production and deliveries of Fisker Ocean and secured additional investment via a financial transaction. Alongside this, the company expanded its brand visibility through events and a new facility, enabling it to be better positioned for sustained growth and profitability in the long run. Fisker Inc.'s financial strength was also highlighted by the production of nearly 9,000 units. This was made possible mostly because of the demand for their unique product, Fisker Ocean, and a successful financing transaction. The company also addressed some challenges during the earnings call. This included the delivery delays and the need to amplify its real estate capacities and workforce. Fisker has undertaken several measures to overcome these challenges. Firstly, they plan to hire between 20 to 30 new employees each week and further establish new facilities. Fisker is also strengthening its marketing measures with TV and print advertising. It is also adjusting pricing strategies in key markets and looking for agreements with European operators to expand the reach of Fisker Ocean. The company's future plans include persistent labor and facility expansion measures, and improved logistics partnerships that are meant to reinforce product deliveries. Additionally, there's a focus on bolstering marketing endeavors and augmenting brand recognition. In terms of product development, Fisker Inc. is preparing to launch new products like the PEAR compact SUV, RONIN luxury sports car, and Alaska with a starting price of $45,900. These new product launches look to create a new dynamic in the market with their innovative features. The conclusions drawn from the earnings call suggest Fisker Inc. is preparing to meet future market demands while addressing current challenges. When was the last time you made a really big purchase? Do you remember what kind of thought, if any, went into it? Before spending a lot of money on something, most of us will take some time to reflect beforehand. Why are we making this purchase? Is it worth the money? How will what we're buying serve us today and in the future? These are all very normal questions to ask yourself. This logic is, of course, applied when purchasing vehicles. Everyone who needs a car, needs it for their own individual reasons. The purpose that the vehicles serve varies from individual to individual, so even if we all buy the same car, we're all buying something a little bit different. In this episode, Ed Bernardon asks the question, “what are we buying” when it comes to our vehicles. If weeds were people, they'd be the ultimate entrepreneurs. Stu Heinecke has created a business strategy based on weeds, and it's quickly taking root in the world of entrepreneurship. Stu is a business growth strategist and the originator of Weed Strategy™. He is also a keynote speaker, renowned cartoonist and bestselling business author. His first book, How to Get a Meeting with Anyone, was named one of the top 64 sales books of all time. His latest, How to Grow Your Business Like a Weed, introduces a new model for explosive business growth, based on the strategies, attributes and tools weeds use to grow and spread. Stu has been named “The father of Contact Marketing”. He is the Founder of The Total Weed Awards, in collaboration with the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center.  Stu has had an unusual career arc. Mentored by some of the world's top cartoonists from Playboy and The New Yorker, Stu has had his cartoons published in The Wall Street Journal and Playboy, among other publications.  Stu has explored Weed Strategy™ for several years, collecting insights from thought leaders from the worlds of business, government, and entertainment including T. Boone Pickens, Kathy Ireland, General Barry McAffrey, Henrik Fisker, Gareb Shamus, Giovanni Marsico, Esther Dyson, Christopher Lochhead, Nathan Myhrvold, Carmen Medina, Jon Ferrara, and Jonna Mendez.  What do weeds and entrepreneurs have in common? Stu Heinecke was stuck in traffic on the Santa Monica freeway when he noticed something that would change his life: There, in between the cracks in the pavement, dandelions were growing. It was an unlikely place for life. They were even spreading and taking over the cracks, one by one. As he sat in a long line of cars, Stu wondered why weeds thrive in the unlikeliest of places - and what it means for us. In that moment Stu recognized something vitally important. If entrepreneurs thought more like weeds, we could experience the same explosive growth! Think like a weed Weeds are so much more than pests. Weeds are natural disruptors, collaborators and process-builders. If that doesn't describe the ultimate mindset for entrepreneurs and their teams, nothing does. Imagine operating as a fierce collective, growing out of hardship, and taking over industries in innovative, unexpected ways. That's the power of Weed Strategy™! So what exactly is Weed Strategy™? To describe weeds and exceptional entrepreneurs, consider how they operate. They follow a consistent pattern: They always deal with what is, they never do anything without an unfair advantage, they never do anything alone, they always focus on what makes them win, and they thrive in disrupted ground.  Weeds deal with what is happening right now; They don't obsess about hypotheticals. Weeds don't do anything without an unfair advantage; They look for ways in which they already have a leg up on the competition in order to come out on top. They don't do anything alone; They use their connections to get their needs met. And above all, weeds thrive when they're challenged. We as founders, creatives, entrepreneurs and self-starters could do well to follow their example. Weeds are the Ubers, Airbnbs and SpaceX's of the natural world. Applying Weed Strategy™ to your business can  transform your organization into a fierce collective, fanatically replying unfair advantages that explode the scale of your enterprise.  Enjoy this episode of The Business of You for actionable insights that will change your life! Quotes “I was driving the Santa Monica Freeway. It's no place for a plant to take root… but there in the cracks in the concrete, I noticed a dandelion. It struck me - how did it get here? What makes weeds so special, hardy and unique? Is there a unified model that they use, and is it something we can use in our businesses?” “To describe weeds, look at what they do and how they operate. They always deal with what is, they never do anything without an unfair advantage, they never do anything alone - it's always at scale, they always focus on what makes them win, and they thrive in disrupted ground. All of these statements suggest something about the [business] model.” “Weeds would tell us - We would probably do well to let your actions lead our emotions, rather than letting emotions lead our actions.” “Weeds never do anything alone. They're natural collaborators. They would tell us - you need to team up with the smartest people you know, as fast as you can.” “We are creating unfair advantages for each other through collaborations.” “When you observe weeds, you can see that they're aggressive, urgent, resilient, adaptive, and they're even optimistic. I'm ascribing something to them when they don't have emotions, but they function in a way we would if we were feeling optimistic.” “We want our competitors saying, we can't get rid of them. How can we compete with this!” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit Stu Heinecke's Website at https://stuheinecke.com/  Purchase Stu Heinecke's Book on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Grow-Your-Business-Like-Weed/dp/1632651998  Connect with Stu directly on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/stuheinecke/  Find Stu Heinecke on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/stu.heinecke.1  Follow Stu on Twitter at https://twitter.com/byStuHeinecke

Buying a car used to be about two things: style and performance. But as motorists trade in their petrol or diesel cars for electric vehicles, manufacturers are increasingly focusing on experience by adding features like karaoke machines and mood lighting. Those drivers also have a lot more choices. The ditching of internal combustion engines in favour of battery-power has allowed new car makers to enter the market. But rather than thinking like BMW or Ford, they are looking to firms like Apple for their inspiration. On this week's podcast, hosts Mike Bird, Alice Fulwood and Tom Lee-Devlin examine the remaking of the auto industry. The Economist's Simon Wright explains that software, rather than hardware, will define car brands in the future. Henrik Fisker, the founder of one of those new brands, tells them that a history of making petrol-powered cars doesn't necessarily qualify established car makers to make electric vehicles. And advisor Tu Le explains why Western car makers are worried about competition from China.Sign up for our new weekly newsletter dissecting the big themes in markets, business and the economy at www.economist.com/moneytalks For full access to print, digital and audio editions, subscribe to The Economist at www.economist.com/podcastoffer Hosted on Acast.
