Send us a textSaints in the South CLASSIC!        Join us this week as we discuss the continued difficulties the saints had of building up the church.   All while having to move, purchase new lands and re establish themselves time and time and again.  The early saints were challenged physically and spiritually to build of God's Kingdom here on the earth.  From Bishop Edward Partridge, Leman Copley, Sidney Gilbert, to Newel Knight, W.W. Phelps, Ezra Thayre, and Thomas B. Marsh.  All of these men were faced with their own challenges as The Lord looked for each mean to use their talents, means, and time to build up the Kingdom of God on earth.  We find that some were willing to do anything that was required of them while others, although having a willing mind and heart, lacked the courage to fulfill their duties.  Let's see what we can learn from these early saints and how we can apply it to our lives.  The road traveled is not an easy one.Support the show and become a "Patron Saint"!www.patreon.com/SaintsintheSouth(The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  For additional information or official statements, please visit the website below.  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/?lang=eng)#biblestudy #religion #churchofJesusChrist #ldspodcast #christianpodcast #missionary #lds #biblestories #christ #faith #faithinchrist #scriptures #bookofmormon #doctrineandcovenants #pearlofgreatprice #temples #houseofthelord #mormon #god #endure #ironrod #faithineveryfootstep #generalconference #prophets #commandments #love #service #charity #keepstriving #gospelgrowthandgoodtimes #become #newtestamentSupport the show

This week we learn: These sections are full of mission calls and instructions from the Lord! Sections 30–36 focus on urging individuals to step up and share the gospel with enthusiasm and faith. This week we learn about preparing for the spiritual harvest and working together to bring others to Christ. It's a reminder that sharing the gospel brings joy, blessings, and the opportunity to make a real difference.I am called to be a witness of Jesus Christ.Whether or not you have a formal calling as a missionary, you can be a witness of Jesus Christ “at all times, and in all things, and in all places”If I build my life on the Savior's gospel, I will not fall.I should focus more on the things of God than the things of the earth.Parley P. Pratt had been a member of the Church for about a month when he was called “into the wilderness” to preach the gospel (Doctrine and Covenants 32:2). Thomas B. Marsh had been a member for even less time than that when he was told, “The hour of your mission is come” Orson Pratt, Edward Partridge, and many others had likewise barely been baptized when their mission calls came. Perhaps there's a lesson in this pattern for us today: if you know enough to accept the restored gospel by baptism, you know enough to share it with others.Fun podcast for kidsFun Book of Mormon podcast for kids Game podcast

In fact, He invites all of us, “Open your mouth to declare my gospel” (Doctrine and Covenants 30:5). Celebrate Easter, and get something more out of it this year by getting the newly released audiobook version of my book the Easter Connection, available at DeseretBook.com. This book will help you think through Christ's suffering in a different way and see how He helps you in a different way. It doesn't cost much and will bless your life and enhance your Easter celebration. Consider staring to listen to it on Holy Thursday.Next week we will have a video every day that helps us celebrate Christ during Holy Week.Consider joining us on our Palm Sunday walk. It will be held on Palm Sunday (April 13), at 4 pm. It will begin on the Murdock Canal Trail, at the Lindon View Trailhead (330 N. 780, Lindon). You may want to come early to find parking. Additional parking can be found at the church nearby (325 Canal Drive, Lindon). Some palm fronds will be provided, but there will not be enough for everyone. Julianne Muhlestein and Andrew Skinner will lead and teach at this event. In this episode Kerry and Susan Easton Black go through a series of revelations aimed at new converts of the Church. They discuss who these people are, helping them and their stories come to life so that we can understand more from the revelations themselves. The focus is on the people and the context, with the hope that each person will take that context and dive into the scriptures armed with the ability to draw even more out of them. They talk about the things that helped these converts either stay strong or stray, and lessons we can learn from that. They explore the lives and conversions of men like David Whitmer, Peter Whitmer, Parley P. Pratt, William McLellan, Thomas B Marsh, Orson Pratt, Sidney Rigdon, and others. They talk about the consequences those who strayed had in the suffering of others, and lessons we can learn from that. They also discuss early conferences, which is wonderful timing since we are experiencing General Conference right now. We are grateful for our generous donors who make the podcast possible, and for our executive producer B. Fisher, and for Launchpad Consulting Studios for producing the podcast, and for Rich Nicholls who composed and plays the music for the podcast.

Section 30 - Historical Background: Following the second conference of the Church at Fayette, the Lord provided revelations to several new converts who were anxious to know what God would have them do. This revelation was to three of the Whitmer brothers, David, Peter Jr. and John. Recap: David Whitmer, one of the three witnesses, is admonished for fearing man more than God and for not giving heed to the Spirit. Therefore he is to remain home and ponder upon his situation. Peter is called on a mission to the Lamanites with Oliver Cowdery, who will be the senior in the companionship. John was called on a mission to declare the gospel within the area and was counselled not to fear man. Section 31 - Historical Background: Thomas B Marsh was a recent convert from Massachusetts who was baptized in August 1830 by David Whitmer. In September he attended the conference in Fayette and received this personal revelation from Joseph. Recap: The Lord is pleased with the dedication of Thomas B Marsh and he is promised blessings for him and his family. He is called on a mission to people whose hearts will be opened by God. Branches of the church will be established by Thomas. He is not assigned to a specific area but is to follow the Spirit where to go and preach. Section 32 - Historical Background: Parley P Pratt was a former minister who read the Book of Mormon and knew it was true. He was baptized in early September, 1830. He immediately went to his brother Orson who immediately accepted the gospel. Within a month Parley received this revelation along with Ziba Peterson. Recap: Parley was called on a mission to the Lamanites along with Oliver Cowdery and Peter Whitmer. Ziba Peterson was also called to join them. They are reassured that God will be in their midst. Section 33 - Historical Background: Ezra Thayre and Northrop Sweet were mediocre members and lacked in zeal, yet asked for this revelation pertaining to their purpose. Recap: Ezra and Northrop are called to preach. The Lord encourages them go forth and open their mouths. Faith, repentance, baptism by water and fire constitutes the rock of the restored church. They are to use the Book of Mormon as their manual. Section 34 - Historical Background: At the age of 19, Orson Pratt was introduced to the gospel by his brother Parley. He immediately embraced the doctrine and was baptized. He traveled to Fayette to meet the Prophet Joseph and received this revelation. Recap: Christ is a light which the wicked don't comprehend. Orson is called to preach to the wicked before Christ comes again, which will be quickly. Section 35 - Historical Background: Sidney Rigdon was a Baptist minister who became discouraged and moved to the Campbellite church. He was introduced to the Book of Mormon and after 2 weeks was baptized. After meeting Joseph he received this personal revelation, including the commandment to be Joseph's scribe. As a result of Sidney's fulfillment of this revelation, we have much of the recorded Doctrine and Covenants. Recap: Sidney Rigdon, like John the Baptist, has prepared the way for the Lord. God calls upon the weak and unlearned to respond to His call. The Lord testifies to Sidney of the prophetic calling of Joseph. Sidney is to watch over Joseph and support him. He is commanded to be Joseph's scribe and forsake him not. Section 36 - Historical Background: Edward Partridge arrived in Fayette with Sidney Rigdon and wanted to meet Joseph to decide for himself if he was a prophet. When Sidney introduced him the spirit immediately confirmed to Edward that Joseph was indeed a prophet of God. Edward desired immediate baptism but Joseph needed rest and baptized him the following day. Sidney asked Joseph for the Lord's guidance and the following revelation was given for Edward (see Section 35 for Sidney's revelation). Recap: Sidney Rigdon is instructed to lay hands upon Edward and confirm him a member and give him the gift of the Holy Ghost. Edward is then called to preach the Gospel, as are all those who desire to be sent forth with a singleness of heart.

This episode is basically a standalone Saints episode! Why? You may ask. Because the book covers a massive and controversial time of early Mormonism, when Joseph Smith incited a civil war and lost. We compare the Saints book to the documents of the time and see how it shakes out with the following issues: excommunications of Oliver Cowdery, David and John Whitmer, and William W. Phelps, land disputes, The Salt Sermon, the Danites, the Army of Israel, the July 4th Oration, the Gallatin election day brawl, the siege of De Witt, the Mormon depredations and raiding of militia supply depots and stealing a cannon, the Battle of Crooked River, David W. Patten (Captian Fearnought) and his glorious blaze, Thomas B. Marsh and milk strippings, and the Mormon Extermination Order, along with some of the militia movements along the way. There's more to the story but that's a little teaser for this reading of Saints: The Standard of Truth, the official history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The road traveled is not an easy one.

Join us as we discuss revelations given to several early members of the church who were called to serve.  David Whitmer, Peter Whitmer Jr., John Whitmer, Thomas B. Marsh, Parley P. Pratt, Ziba Peterson,  Ezra Thayre, Northrop Sweet, Orson Pratt, Sidney Rigdon, and Edward Partridge.  Even though these men had been members for only a few months and some less than a month, The Lord called them to preach His Gospel.  In order to share the gospel, you do not have to know everything or have all the answers.  You simply only need a testimony, and a willingness to follow The Lord.

We consider the danger he portrays of the adversary and we reflect on the potential damage caused by those who lose their way.  President Russell M Nelson: “How divisive is the force of dissension! Small acts can lead to such great consequences. Regardless of position or situation, no one can safely assume immunity to contention’s terrible toll. “Thomas B. Marsh, once one of the Twelve [Apostles], left the Church…. After an absence from the Church of nearly nineteen years, he came back. To a congregation of Saints, he then said: “‘If there are any among this people who should ever apostatize and do as I have done, prepare your backs for a good whipping, if you are such as the Lord loves. But if you will take my advice, you will stand by the authorities’”

In the summer of 1829, a man named Thomas B. Marsh received a prompting that he should travel nearly 400 miles from Boston, Massachusetts, to upstate New York, not knowing what he would find there. Thomas stayed in western New York for three months to no avail. On his way home, someone he was staying with mentioned a “Golden Book” found by a young man named Joseph Smith. Thomas went to Palmyra, as the woman directed, and arrived at Grandin’s printshop just in time to get a fresh copy of the first sixteen pages of the Book of Mormon. Read at bit.ly/know485

[paypal-donation] I'm excited to start 2018 two amazing guests: a Seventy and an Apostle of the Community of Christ: John Hamer and Lachlan MacKay. I'll let them introduce themselves. Lachlan:  Sure, [I'm] Lachlan MacKay, a member of the Council of Twelve in the Community of Christ.  I oversee the northeast field in the U.S. which is Michigan and basically Kirtland to Maine to Virginia.  I have functional assignments including Community of Christ Historic Sites.  I oversee historic sites and lead the church history and sacred story team. John: In terms of the history work that I do, I primarily have studied the broader Latter-day Saint tradition churches.  Like I say that would be all manner of –ites, so the Strangites,[1] especially but also Cutlerites[2] and Hendrickites[3] and everybody else, Josephites,[4] our tradition.  I'm a member of Community of Christ.  I serve as the pastor of the downtown Toronto congregation.  I've been called to be a Seventy.  I'm a Seventy-designate.  The ordination will happen in October.[5]  I am also a past president of the John Whitmer Historical Association (JWHA), which is essentially the other –ites, or the Community of Christ's version of the Mormon History Association (MHA), those kind of things. We'll be talking a little bit about LDS myths. GT:  One of my favorite blog posts was, it's been a decade now, the Top Myths about the Community of Christ for Mormons. John:  Oh yeah, the Top 10 myths, I don't remember exactly how it was, the top 10 Mormon myths about the Community of Christ or something like that.  That one we ended up doing a couple of podcasts with that. I think we did one on Mormon Expression that was on that same topic. One of the ones for the LDS Tradition, one of the blogs posts that gets the most traction is for whatever reason, sometime in your curriculum every spring you do the Milk & Strippings story.[6]  Then suddenly this essay that I've written that has been read more times is on the Milk & Strippings story because every May or something like that it comes up for some reason.  I don't know why. We will also talk about the construction of the Kirtland Temple.  (Don't forget to check out our previous discussion with Dr. Mark Staker and Dr. Richard Bennett!)  Check out our conversation! https://youtu.be/Agt2SKt9M6U [paypal donation]   [1] Because so many churches founded by Joseph Smith have similar names, sometimes it is easier to name the groups by their next founder.  For example, the Strangites have a similar name as the mainline LDS Church.  Their church is officially known with slightly different capitalization and punctuation as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (vs. Latter-day Saints), and were founded by James Strang following an angelic visit.  We will talk more about them in a future episode. [2] Cutlerites were founded by Alpheus Cutler and are officially known as the Church of Jesus Christ. [3] Hedrickites were founded by Granville Hedrick and officially known as the Church of Christ or Church of Christ (Temple Lot.)  They are sometimes referred to as the Temple Lot Church.  We will discuss them in a future episode. [4] Josephites are better known as Community of Christ or RLDS Church.  The official name is the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  They are called Josephites after Joseph Smith III.  The Utah church is sometimes referred to as Brighamites, after Brigham Young. [5] John was ordained in October 2017. [6] The Milk Strippings story is a story in which the LDS Church claims that apostle Thomas B. Marsh was excommunicated for defending his wife.  As the story goes, his wife took extra milk for butter, known as “milk strippings.”  John wrote a post that there was more context to the story than is given in LDS Sunday School manuals.  See https://bycommonconsent.com/2009/07/01/the-milk-strippings-story-thomas-b-marsh-and-brigham-young/

Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet to Thomas B. Marsh, at Kirtland, Ohio, 23 July 1837 (see History of the Church, 2:499–501). This revelation contains the word of the Lord unto Thomas B. Marsh concerning the Twelve Apostles of the Lamb. The Prophet records that this revelation was received on the day on which the gospel was first preached in England. Thomas B. Marsh was at this time President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Kirtland, Ohio, June 1831 (see History of the Church, 1:186–88). Ezra Thayre, who had been appointed to travel to Missouri with Thomas B. Marsh (see section 52:22), was unable to start on his mission when the latter was ready. Elder Thayre was not ready to depart on his journey because of his involvement in the problems at Thompson, Ohio (see the heading to section 54). The Lord answered the Prophet’s inquiry on the matter by giving this revelation.

Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet to Thomas B. Marsh, September 1830 (see History of the Church, 1:115–17). The occasion was immediately following a conference of the Church (see the heading to section 30). Thomas B. Marsh had been baptized earlier in the month and had been ordained an elder in the Church before this revelation was given.
