It can help with predictive growth. It can help with predictive risk management, whether in a portfolio context or a compliance context. We have massive sums of data in wealth management. And so the ability to be able to train these algos on them and then essentially leverage them to get additional horsepower creates operational efficiency in our decision-making process" ~ Rob Pettman [15:45] - "Supervised AI is an algorithm that learns over time. The sooner I start, the smarter it is over time. So if I start earlier than my competitors, my stuff's going to be a lot smarter than their stuff when they start late." ~ Rob Pettman Links Rob Pettman on LinkedIn TIFIN Sage Connect with our hosts LifeYield Jack Sharry on LinkedIn Jack Sharry on Twitter Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify LinkedIn Twitter Facebook

BIO: As an accomplished entrepreneur and respected leader in the fintech industry, Larry Shumbres's mission is to continuously enhance the investing experience for both advisers and investors through innovative technology.STORY: Larry tried to create a hedge fund, 50% tied to digital gold and 50% tied to the top five cryptocurrencies but faced so many setbacks in the process. He spent too much time and money on this venture, which never paid off.LEARNING: Don't try to build an investment product around an unregulated industry. Don't invest in what you don't know. “If you don't know anything about private equity, derivatives, or options, don't do it. First, learn how it works and then look to invest in it.”Larry Shumbres Guest profileAs an accomplished entrepreneur and respected leader in the fintech industry, Larry Shumbres's mission is to continuously enhance the investing experience for both advisers and investors through innovative technology. He is recognized as an industry expert and has over 20 years of fintech experience with companies such as Charles Schwab, Morningstar, and New York Life Investments. Most recently, Larry founded, built, and exited Totum Risk, a leading risk tolerance platform for the financial industry, through its acquisition by TIFIN. Before Totum, Larry built SmartVision by eVestment, which was later acquired by Nasdaq. He also led the sales team at eMoney before its acquisition by Fidelity.Worst investment everIn 2017, Larry had the idea of building a hedge fund, 50% tied to digital gold and 50% to the top five cryptocurrencies based on market cap. He put a lot of time and money into it. Larry had another business partner that was also putting time and money into it. He even had some friends and family money tied into this venture.Larry completed the private placement memorandum (PPM) to enable him to sell the product and have investors review it. Larry faced a couple of problems during this whole process. One, he didn't have a track record. Two, he couldn't sell the product in the United States. Three, it was impossible to distribute the product in other countries that had their own rules and regulations. So after spending a lot of money on attorneys, consultants, rules and regulations, and licenses, it got to the point where it wasn't worth it. So Larry shut it down and lost the money.Lessons learnedDon't try to build an investment product or tool around an unregulated industry.Anything that the SEC hasn't approved is a big risk.Andrew's takeawaysRevenue is everything. As a startup, your number one goal is to get your revenue up as fast as possible.Actionable adviceWhether you're an entrepreneur or an investor, investing in what you know and what is regulated is wise.Larry's recommendationsTo review any investments, Larry recommends going to large financial institutions like Schwab, Fidelity, Vanguard, JPMorgan, Chase, etc. Such institutions have a plethora of information to help you learn about investments. But more importantly, if you don't have a passion for investments, Larry recommends partnering with a financial advisor to...
ChatGPT may have recently taken the world by storm, but artificial intelligence is not new. AI's greatest strength has always been its ability to personalize information in seconds. With the advancement and accessibility of technology, these AI solutions have become popularized, even in the financial services sector. Vinay Nair is the Founder, Chairman, and CEO of TIFIN, a company that makes investing engaging by using investment intelligence, data science, and technology. With TIFIN, Vinay hopes to manifest the future at a faster pace and build a collaborative experience between humans and AI. In this episode, Vinay talks with Jack about how TIFIN is disrupting wealth tech, Vinay's predictions for the industry's future, and the importance of innovation even in times of financial hardship. Key Takeaways [01:30] - An introduction to Vinay's background. [03:00] - Vinay's role at TIFIN. [04:53] - What is “tech debt”? [06:17] - An overview of TIFIN's point solutions. [09:16] - How to build a problem-solving product with AI. [14:23] - What is holistic wellness? [17:27] - Where does Vinay see the industry going from here? [20:14] - Opportunities in the insurance and annuity space. [22:45] - Vinay's key takeaways. [25:49] - How Vinay spends his time when he's not working. Quotes [03:54] - “We believe we are helping the future manifest at a faster pace.” ~ Vinay Nair [22:31] - “I think a lot of what we are talking about at the end of the day will be a human-AI collaborative experience.” ~ Vinay Nair [22:55] - “I think we are in a fascinating phase of innovation. If you're running a business, it's sometimes tough to allocate capital to innovation, especially in moments when you feel like you have to survive. But that's a little bit like cutting down on internet spending in 2001 if you want to build a longer-term business. So the ability to reallocate to innovation from other things is going to be a key differentiator of firms that thrive and firms that don't.” ~ Vinay Nair Links Vinay Nair on LinkedIn TIFIN 55ip J.P. I met Tricia Rothschild for the first time at an industry conference late last year. It's odd that it was our first meeting as we've both been in the industry for 30 years and we have in common many acquaintances.Tricia Rothschild was one of the early contributors to the massive success of Morningstar, making the wealth management and investment research company a household name. She was the Chief Product Officer and Co-Head of Global Markets at Morningstar and managed a multi-million-dollar P&L supported by global teams of technologists, designers, researchers, product managers, and marketers. In her 26 years at Morningstar, Tricia helped develop online investment services for individual investors, and build the firm's equity research business. She left Morningstar two years ago, but Tricia has stayed true to her wealth management passion and now serves on several boards of directors in the financial services and fintech space, including board seats at Riskalyze and Tifin. She earned a spot on Financial Planning's 2021 “Most Likely to Change Wealth Management” list, and received Investment News' 2020 “Women to Watch” award.Listen to this 22nd episode of Can You Hold My Attention? to hear Tricia's views on culture and inspiration within a fast-growing company, her thoughts on the current state of the financial markets, and her advice for business owners on managing complexity and staying focused.
