What is driving the latest Bitcoin and crypto rally? Here are a couple of thoughts: Clarity around Binance: settlement with US authorities well received and the “Binance risk” significantly reduced which was a major looking uncertainty for many institutional investors Closure on FTX: SBF heading to prison and FTX claims reportedly selling for over 60 cents on the dollar with overall recovery looking close to 90 cents Expectation that interest rates will fall in Q1 2024: thus sending capital into “risk on” assets Upcoming physical Bitcoin ETF approval: many investors trying to get exposure before expected inflows following the ETF approval that could be weeks away Bitcoin halving coming in May 2024: which will cut in half the rate of new Bitcoin issued every 10 minutes. Ease of entering crypto ecosystem globally: many regulated players now offering easy on/off ramps which makes it easier for retail investors to enter the space Rise of stable coins globall: not only from the public in countries from Argentina to Turkey but also international trade. Once assets are in stable coins, they are rarely going back to fiat and makes it much much easier to buy other digital assets.

This is: "Going Infinite" - New book on FTX/SBF released today + my TL;DR, published by Nicky Pochinkov on October 4, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Just finished new book about FTX and Sam Bankman-Fried, launched today: "Going Infinite: The Rise and Fall of a New Tycoon" by Michael Lewis. The book itself is quite engaging and interesting, so I recommend it as a read. The book talks about: Early life and general personality Working at Jane Steet Capital Early days at Alameda and the falling out A refreshed alameda The early FTX days and actions of Sam Post-FTX days, and where did the money go? The book talks a decent bit about effective altruists in both good and bad light. Some particularly interesting anecdotes and information according to the book (contains "spoilers"): In early Alameda days, they apparently lost track of (as in, didn't know where it went) $ millions of XRP tokens, and Sam was just like "ehh, who cares, there is like 80% chance will show up eventually, so we can just count it as 80% of the value". This + general disorganisation + risk taking really pissed off many of the first wave of EAs working there, and a bunch of people left. Eventually, they actually "found" the XRP: it was in some crypto exchange they were using, and some software bug meant it was not labelled correctly, so they had to email them about it. Where did all the lost FTX money go? At FTX the lack of organisation was similar, but much larger in scale. Last chapter has napkin calculations with in-goings vs out-goings for FTX. (Edit: See this below). While they clearly spent and lost lots of money, some of the assets were just lost track of because didn't care to keep track because other assets were so large that these were not that important/urgent. So far "the debtors have recovered approximately 7 billion dollars in assets, and they anticipate further recoveries", which could be an additional approx $7.2Billion to still be found (which might be sold for less as much of it non-cash, but at least $2Billion?), not even including potential clawbacks like investment into Anthropic. A naive reading suggests there could have been enough to repay all the affected customers? EDIT: here is the "napkin math" given in the book of combined FTX+Alameda ingoings and outgoings over the course of a few years. So the question in the final chapters of the book is accounting for the $6 Billion discrepancy. Clearly the customer funds were misused by Sam and Alameda, and the numbers are not to be taken at face value (for example, the profits at Alameda could be questioned), but possibly worth viewing at as a possible reference point for those interested in them but not willing to read the whole book:Money In: Customer Deposits: $15 billion Investment from Venture Capitalists: $2.3 billion Alameda Training Profits: $2.5 billion FTX Exchange Revenues: $2 billion Net Outstanding Loans from Crypto Lenders (mainly Genesis and BlockFi): $1.5 billion Original Sale of FTT: $35 million Total Money In: $23 billion Money Out: Return to Customers During the November Run: $5 billion Amount Paid Out to CZ: $1.4 billion (excluding $500 million worth of FTT and $80 million worth of BNB tokens) Sam's Private Investments: $4.4 billion (with at least $300 million paid for using shares and FTX) Loans to Sam: $1 billion (used for political and EA donations to avoid stock dividends) Loans to Nishad: $543 million (for similar purposes) Endorsement Deals: $500 million (potentially more, including cases where FTX paid endorsers with FTX stock) Buying and Burning Their Exchange Token FTT: $600 million Out Expenses (Salaries, Lunch, Bahamas Real Estate): $1 billion Total Money Out: $14.443 Billion After the Crash: $3 billion on hand. $450 million stolen in hack Here are the largest manifold markets on FTX repayment I could find f...

EA - How has FTX's collapse affected public perception of EA? by Ben West

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: How has FTX's collapse affected public perception of EA?, published by Ben West on June 16, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Purpose of post As part of the EA Strategy Fortnight, we want to compile some survey results addressing how FTX has impacted the EA brand—particularly people's sentiments towards EA. From the research we have on attitudes toward EA from the EA community, the general public, and university students, it seems that the FTX crash hasn't, overall, impacted sentiments toward EA very much. This is not to say that FTX has not significantly impacted people in many ways, including mental and emotional health, levels of trust in EA leadership, and increased uncertainty in EA as a movement. We hope compiling these survey results will help contextualize our individual experiences and improve our understanding of general attitudes toward EA. The EA Community In December 2022, Rethink Priorities ran a survey to gauge how the FTX crisis affected EA community members' attitudes toward the EA movement, organizations, and leadership (fuller results of that survey from Rethink are here). Data points: Results demonstrated that FTX had decreased satisfaction by 0.5-1 points on a 10-point scale within the EA community, but overall community sentiment remained positive at ~7.5/10. Around half of the respondents reported that the FTX crisis gave them concerns with EA meta-organizations, the EA community and its norms, and the leaders of EA meta-organizations. More respondents agreed that the EA community had responded well to the crisis so far (47%) than disagreed (21%), though roughly a third of respondents neither agreed nor disagreed with this. Most respondents reported continuing to trust EA organizations, though over 30% said they had substantially lost trust in EA public figures or leadership. University Students The CEA groups team surveyed some university group organizers regarding the states of their individual groups in May 2023. From November 2022 to February 2023, Rethink commissioned a survey to measure campus awareness of EA and whether students' awareness of EA was because of FTX. Data points: When CEA polled university group organizers, they gave an average response of 3.8/10 to “How worried are you about how your group is perceived on campus?” Only two organizers mentioned FTX, and both of them only did so to state that they haven't seen impacts from FTX—though one said that this might change in the fall. The vast majority of students interviewed on campuses did not mention FTX when asked where and when they heard about EA, and only 13/233 (5.6%) respondents who had encountered EA found FTX or SBF salient enough to mention when interviewed. Most respondents to Rethink's survey hadn't encountered EA. Of those who had (233), only 18 (1.1% of total respondents) referred to FTX/SBF explicitly or obliquely when asked what they think effective altruism means or where and when they first heard of it. General Public Rethink ran surveys pre- and post-FTX assessing awareness of and feelings towards EA in the US general public and later in more elite (educated and informed) US groups in February-March (post-FTX). Data points: Awareness of EA remains low, and ~99% of people who were aware of EA did not mention FTX. Among those aware of EA, attitudes remain positive and actually maybe increased post-FTX —though they were lower (d = -1.5, with large uncertainty) among those who were additionally aware of FTX. This does not suggest that there has not been a worsening in attitudes towards EA among those highly familiar with EA and FTX, only that most people are not familiar with both EA and FTX. Major Donor Impacts While not a formal survey, we thought it might be useful to include some info about how major EA donors have responded. This is primarily anecdotal in...

If you geek-out on capital, money, and podcasts like I do, you're going to love this discussion with my friend Ted Seides, founder of Capital Allocators. Ted's built an ecosystem that includes advisory services, education, events and podcasts. I was introduced to Ted a few years back by Jan van Eck, who's also been on my podcast. Ted went to Yale, and then got his MBA from Harvard (but we're not going to hold that against him) He also co-founded Protégé Partners – a multibillion-dollar investment firm he ran from 2002 to 2015. In 2017 Ted launched the Capital Allocators podcast, which reached over 13.5 million downloads in December of 2022. I checked in with Ted to talk about the recent FTX fraud; he was around in the days of Bernie Madoff and has a really different take on how managers should think about these events. I wanted his take on how the SEC has been rambling on recently about the ability for LPs to sue Venture Capitalists and what it all means for the industry. In addition, I wanted people to get an inside look at the industry and understand how the sausage is made – how people think at this level, and what you're up against. You're competing against a machine that's there to beat the hell out of you, so it's very hard to have an edge. This is why I talk the people that call me out of being a VC or starting a hedge fund. Ted's the right guy to talk with about this stuff. He did it for a living. I hope you enjoy our conversation.  Guest - Ted Seides, CFA, Podcaster and Founder at Capital Allocators  howardlindzon.com, capitalallocators.com  podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/capital-allocators-inside-the-institutional/id1223764016 Twitter: @howardlindzon, @tseides, @PanicwFriends, @knutjensen  linkedin.com/in/tedseides #fintech #invest #investment #venturecapital #stockmarket #finance  Show Notes: Introduction (00:33) Welcome Ted (04:08) The Yale/Harvard track (04:33) Choosing a path (06:11) Opportunity aperture is wide (06:57) Ted goes on his own (10:55) Demystifying podcasting (12:28) Podcasting as a business (13:09) Who is the customer (15:38) Running a hedge fund (16:14) Following your interests (19:05) Viking / Dan Loeb (20:16) Looking back at the last year (22:39) Fraud is fraud (24:32) FTX / SBF (28:29) SEC response (35:42) Ted's current investing strategy (37:22) Venture investing strategy (38:36) Growth in Wealth Management (40:30) Wrapping up (43:09) Closing thoughts (44:37)

EA - EA needs more humor by SWK

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EA needs more humor, published by SWK on December 1, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. In the wake of the FTX collapse, much ink has been spilled on EA reform by people smarter and more experienced in this space than I am. However, as someone who has been engaging with EA over the past few years and who has become increasingly connected with the community, I have a modest proposal I'd like to share: EA needs more humor. Criticism of EA has roots back in the “earning to give” era. This Stanford Social Innovation Review editorial from 2013 describes EA as “cold and hyper-rationalistic,” deeming the idea of numerically judging charities as “defective altruism.” This piece in Aeon from 2014 essentially argues that the EA utilitarian worldview opposes art, aesthetic beauty, and creativity in general. Criticism of EA has only heightened in recent years with the rise of longtermism. Another Aeon editorial from 2021 characterizes the “apocalypticism” of longtermist thought as “profoundly dangerous” while also lampooning EA organizations like the “grandiosely named Future of Humanity Institute” and “the even more grandiosely named Future of Life Institute.” In the last few months before the FTX situation, criticism was directed at Will MacAskill's longtermist manifesto, What We Owe the Future. A Wall Street Journal review concludes that “‘What We Owe the Future' is a preposterous book” and that it is “replete with highfalutin truisms, cockamamie analogies and complex discussions leading nowhere.” A Current Affairs article once again evokes the phrase “defective altruism” and asserts that MacAskill's book shows how EA as a whole “is self-righteous in the most literal sense.” The above example are, of course, just a small snapshot of the criticism EA has faced. However, I think these examples capture a common theme in EA critiques. Overall, it seems that critics tend to characterize EA as a community of cold, calculating, imperious, pretentious people who take themselves and their ostensible mission to “save humanity” far too seriously. To be honest, a lot of EA criticism seems like it's coming from cynical, jaded adults who relish in the opportunity to crush young people's ambitious dreams about changing the world. I also think many critics don't really understand what EA is about and extrapolate based on a glance at the most radical ideas or make unfair assumptions based on a list of EA's high-profile Silicon Valley supporters. However, there is a lot of truth to what critics are saying: EA's aims are incredibly ambitious, its ideas frequently radical, and its organizations often graced with grandiose names. I also agree that the FTX/SBF situation has exposed glaring holes in EA philosophy and shortcomings in the organization of the EA community. However, my personal experience in this community has been that the majority of EAs are not cold, calculating, imperious, pretentious people but warm, intelligent, honest, and altruistic individuals who wholeheartedly want to “do good better.” I think one thing the EA community could do moving forward to improve its external image and internal function is to embrace a bit more humor. EA could stand to acknowledge and make fun of the craziness of comparing the effectiveness of charities as disparate as a deworming campaign and a policy advocacy group, or the absurdity of a outlining a superintelligent extinction event. I say these ideas are absurd not because I don't believe in them; I have the utmost respect for rigorous charity evaluators like GiveWell and am convinced that AI is indeed the most important problem facing humanity. But I think that acknowledging the external optics of these ideas and, to a degree, joking about how crazy they may seem could make EA less disagreeable for many people on the outside looking in. "All of us at the cap table have spoken and we're stunned, and we don't have any answers yet," O'Leary continues. "It's clear to many people throughout the last few trading sessions that the various digital tokens are so correlated," he says, "and most of the tokens that exist will go away." The China wild card has been persistent every 90 days, "and the Chinese need to step up and buy a working vaccine to have the same herd immunity benefits seen in North America," O'Leary concludes. #FTX #SBF #blockfi ⭐️ Join Daniela Cambone's exclusive community ➡️ https://danielacambone.com

I'll try to repeat it in a simple way, then move on: POTUS Biden & Co. sent billions to Ukraine. Ukraine put vast sums in the hands of FTX SBF & Co. spent tens of millions on primarily Democratic candidates during the Midterm elections. It is noteworthy that the "Aid for Ukraine" website apparently set up by SBF and reportedly took in $60 million in donations is last picked up by the Wayback machine ten days prior to the U.S. Midterm elections. Coming to grips with the vastness of the West's pedophilia problem was a gradual series of eye-opening events for me. During childhood, I was fortunate not to be around dangerous pedophiles myself—at least not that I was aware might have been there. Among friends in my community, pedophilia was merely an edgy joke about something that seemed so rare as to be nonexistent. But shortly after I went to work as a bond trader on Wall Street, I found myself sitting at a desk next to a freshly minted Princeton graduate named Paul "Should I Double-Bag It?" Ellis who bragged effusively about his sex tourism in Southeast Asia. Shockingly, office leadership seemed more concerned about the lawsuit risk (there was one woman in the 17-person unit) associated with his loud blathering about sex with prepubescent girls than what this meant about his character. Or perhaps it's good to be a Princeton graduate in a room almost half-filled with Princeton graduates?

In this episode, we see the return of the original "Rogue Trader" Mr Nick Lesson, who I thought was the perfect guest to get back onto the show, in an effort to contextualise what is happening right now across the world in terms of the economics of it all, and projected recession. Recently I attended a Bank of England presentation in Belfast, and the bank is very clear - they are projecting a long (2 years) slow painful recession for the UK, with plenty of pain, particularly for UK businesses and households, and those of us who have a mortgage. Nick is one of the most well known traders and investors in the world, has lived through quite a number of big economic shocks / events, including "Black Monday" in 1989, the DOTCOM crash, the GFC and now what has been unravelling over the last two years, with the onset of the pandemic leading to the current crisis, where inflation is running at 40 year highs, and we appear to be entering another recession.  Before I spoke to Nick, I was expecting him to be quite pessimistic of what might be en route, as generally he seems to take that sober outlook on the world and economies, however, surprisingly,  his outlook on how he see's things moving forward caught me a little by surprise, as it was much more optimistic.  Nick's view is that it is quite natural for economies and markets to correct themselves, and in fact it is needed at times, so things can cool down, and people can take stock and review how they might come back into the market after a period of time.   His observations are that earnings in the US remain quite high, and despite the FED increasing central bank base rates in super quick time, he does feel that the US market and economy is looking more at a softer landing, as opposed to a chaotic abrupt recession most are predicting, which to me was incredibly interesting.  Nick is however, more concerned about how this all plays out in Europe and the UK, and believes that things will be much more difficult for people this side of the Atlantic.  I also spoke to Nick about the recent FTX / SBF financial disaster, which has caught the attention of the world's media, given the scale of the financial disaster that continues to unravel.  Who better to speak to about what appears to be one of the biggest frauds in history than the original rogue trader himself.  It's interesting NIck's take on this incredible story, where over $36bn has been wiped from this company in a matter of days, as it's owner and the guy ultimately responsible (SBF), sits tweeting nonsense, apologising over twitter in real time - all very surreal.  Nick's overriding view being that the authorities will catch up with SBF, in the not too distant future. We finish the conversation with Nick reiterating his view that he fears more for the UK and Europe economies, than the US, and is certainly much more optimistic and buoyant in general than much of what we hear and read these days, about what happens in our economy and markets in the next 18 / 24 months. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The relative silence on FTX/SBF is likely the result of sound legal advice, published by Tyler Whitmer on November 21, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. The purpose of this post is to explain why I think we should expect to hear very little, if anything, about the FTX/SBF fiasco from any EA public figures or institutions, and why I wouldn't read anything into that other than that folks are receiving good legal advice and appropriately following it. A little about me and why I'm writing this A little background on me, as this is my first real post here (gulp!) after lurking on and off for a long time. I recently resigned from the partnership of a big international law firm based in the US so I could take some time off. During my 16ish-year career as a big firm lawyer, my practice often focused on plaintiff-side restructuring-related litigation, including cases stemming from some of the biggest financial blow-ups in US history. Early in my career, I worked on litigation about deceptive lending practices at Enron. I then spent the better part of a decade working on litigation against the big money center banks by creditors of Lehman Brothers. I was also involved in litigation against the banks by the Federal Housing Finance Agency, after it took over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. I've been what I'll call EA-adjacent for a long time, but I've recently gotten more involved. For the past few months during my time off, I've been meeting as many lawyers and other mid-career folks in the EA community as I can (hi to those I've met!), and I've pitched in on a few projects led by others. I was informed on November 2 that I would receive funding for my own project from the FTX Future Fund. I obviously don't expect to see that funding now. I'm upset and sad about that. I'm really excited about the project, and while I can do some of it by donating my time to it, some of it really does require a bit of funding that I'm not sure I can get now. That sucks, and I'm still working out how I feel about it. Obligatory “this is not legal advice” throat clearing I'm not acting as anyone's lawyer here, and I don't want to (at least right now with respect to these issues). Nothing in this post is legal advice. This is just my two cents, off the top of my head, based entirely on my experience and no research at all. Why it's best for folks not to comment on the FTX/SFB situation, and not just for their own sake I don't know anything about the FTX/SBF situation other than what's in the public record, which I've been following closely as it develops. My thoughts here are inspired a bit by this post by Shakeel Hashim and this one by Holden Karnofsky, and the comments to each, but it's also a response more generally to frustration I've seen here and on Twitter about the fact that many public figure EAs and senior folks at EA institutions are not directly addressing the FTX/SBF situation as much as some would like. Lawyers almost always advise both individual clients and folks representing client entities not to speak to anyone, including friends and family, about ongoing litigation or any facts and circumstances likely to lead to litigation, including bankruptcy proceedings. People often feel frustrated by being “muzzled” in this way—especially where a narrative is establishing itself publicly that they see as casting them in a negative light. I suspect many are feeling that way right now about FTX/SBF and how the press is reporting on it. But smart people will continue to follow their lawyers' advice. There are good reasons for this, including many that go beyond self-interest. I've seen most of the self-interest angles addressed elsewhere, but I'll say a bit about it just to drive the point home. Being involved in litigation, even as a totally blameless witness—or even a perceived witness who...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A long-termist perspective on EA's current PR crisis, published by Geoffrey Miller on November 18, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. EAs seem so good at taking long-termist perspectives on everything -- other than our own movement's public relations (PR) issues. Let's try to apply some of our long-termist perspective-taking and future point-of-view imagination to the current situation. In ten years, we'll still remember the FTX/SBF crisis as a dramatic betrayal, a public relations (PR) crisis, and a significant financial and reputational setback. However, I'm also confident that in ten years, EA will still exist, will have restored its reputation, will still be attracting great talent, resources, and ideas, and will be doing more good than ever in the world. When we happen to find ourselves living in 'interesting times', it's useful to remember the age-old wisdom: the dogs bark, but the caravan moves on. This too shall pass. Think about all the 'huge crises!!!' that the news has covered over the last few years -- and how quickly each news story died down when the news media shifted to some new crisis narrative that carries enough monetizable outrage potential that it could attract clicks, subscribers, and advertisers. We are part of this week's monetizable outrage narrative. Every other week, ever since the development of the 24-hour news cycle, has had its own monetizable outrage narrative. If you've never been part of an outrage narrative before, welcome to the club. It sucks. It leaves scars. But it is survivable. (Speaking as someone who has survived my own share of public controversy, cancellation, and outrage narratives, and who has worked in several academic subfields that are routinely demonized by the press.) Also, haters gonna hate. Many people resent EA because it makes their warm-glow virtue-signaling seem superficial, irrational, and performative. They know deep in their hearts that it's hard to argue with the core EA values that we should use reason, evidence, and open debate to try to reduce suffering, and to promote a better long-term future. They've been waiting for an opportunity to attack EA as hypocritical or hyper-earnest, as hyper-rational or irrational, as hyper-nerdy or suspiciously cool, as hyper-sexual or incel-adjacent asexual -- anything they can think of. Just remember -- if you wouldn't have taken any misguided, uninformed, snarky critiques of EA seriously last month, don't take them seriously this week. Haters gonna hate. None of this is to minimize the actual, real-world impact of the current crisis. Many people lost of lot of money to a company they trusted. A major tech industry (crypto) will be handicapped for a while. Our organizations face real losses of resources, for a while. These are real problems, but I think they are not existential threats to EA as a movement, and they are certainly not good counter-arguments against EA principles and insights. There will come a time, maybe in the 2050s, when you may be sitting in front of a cheerful Christmas fireplace, a grandkid bouncing on your knee, and your adult kids may ask you to tell them once more the tale of the Great FTX Crisis of 2022, and how it all played out, and died down, and how EA survived and prospered. You won't remember all the breathless EA forum posts, the in-fighting, and the crisis management. You'll just remember that you either kept your faith in the cause and the community -- or you didn't. I hope more of us can take this kind of long-term perspective on the current situation. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Stop Overreacting re: FTX / SBF, published by MattBall on November 16, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Written as tomorrow's public blog post in part as a reaction to this, but given what I see on this forum and what I hear from otherwise level-headed individuals, I'm sharing it here now: As anyone who has read my blog or Losing My Religions knows, I have my disagreements with some effective altruists (EAs). I also have some fundamental philosophical differences. But after this FTX fiasco, some non-EAs are taking one person's failures as an excuse to mock and condemn the entire idea of effective altruism. (And some EAs are losing their minds and questioning their very identity and "purpose" in life.)Think about it. Fine, SBF seemingly had lots of money. And he said he was pursuing money for EA causes. But he is just one guy! His money doesn't make him any more important than anyone else; even less so because his thoughts and ideas are not central to EA.Just because one Effective Altruist did things we don't like doesn't mean we throw out utilitarianism or toss Peter Singer under the bus, just as we don't become Republicans because Bill Clinton was sleazy or give up on meditation because some teachers were predators. The EA community is a lot of people. Some of them are bad. Some of them are mentally unstable. Some of them are crazy. We don't judge all of EA on one person – that is lunacy.Let's think about this from first principles. These people are altruists. In short, they care about others, not just themselves. They want others to not suffer but instead thrive. But they also know: Some individuals are suffering more than others. My hands and back hurt and my tinnitus is screaming, but I can say with absolute certainty that many people out there are suffering worse, such that they wish to die. So if you are a rational altruist, you recognize differences in need, regardless of any other factors. Efforts and money have different impacts in different situations. An additional million dollars to Harvard has a different impact than a million dollars in Polio eradication. (And both have a different sign compared to a million dollars to the homophobic Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints.) Now there is a lot more to say about effective altruism, and no one knows this more than EAs. But this is the bottom line: They want to be as effective as possible in helping others. Is this true of the critics? Or do the critics simply not want to feel guilty? Guilty about buying a fancy car, owning several houses, taking lavish vacations? Giving to their church, their alma mater, their kid's soccer team? Caring infinitely more for their kids than every non-human animal on the planet? Before you pile on along with those attacking effective altruists, ask yourself if doing so is the best way to help the less fortunate. And note: If you are sure that you know what EAs should do and how they should do it, I am willing to bet all my savings that you are wrong. These questions are simply too complex to have certain questions. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org.

With a market cap of over $2 trillion, crypto has given birth to several billionaires since the first Bitcoin was mined. Although anonymity makes it difficult to determine who has what, a new report from Forbes has revealed some of the richest people in crypto and what they are worth. Topping the list is Binance CEO Chanpeng Zhao, with a net worth that is almost 3x higher than that of the next person on the list. Binace CZ tops crypto's richest list According to Forbes' latest estimates, CZ owns at least 70% of Binance, enough to make him the 19th richest man globally, with a net worth of $65 billion. In 2020, Forbes had put the estimate at $1.9 billion. Meanwhile, in January, CryptoSlate reported that Bloomberg News estimates CZ's net worth to be around $96 billion, making him the 11th richest person in the world at the time. CZ‘s success is mostly tied to the strategic acquisitions and expansionist moves of Binance, which has the largest trading volume of all crypto exchanges. It is reportedly responsible for roughly two-thirds of the trading volume of centralized exchange transactions. Binance generated approximately $20 billion in revenue in 2021, according to a Bloomberg News analysis. Beyond his stake in Binance, Zhao also owns a vast amount of BNB, as well as some Bitcoin. However, the exact nature of his crypto portfolio is unclear. Others on the list The second richest person on the list is FTX exchange founder Sam Bankman-Fried. Forbes estimates that he is worth $24 billion. His net worth includes about half of FTX and the $7 billion worth of FTT, which is the exchange's native token, that he holds. Before the Bloomberg report, the common perception was that SBF was the richest person in crypto. However, more public information has shown that to be false. There are still several other billionaires on the list but none of them have a net worth higher than $10 billion. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is the third richest person on the list, with $6.6 billion. He has a 19% stake in publicly traded Coinbase. Others on the list include Gary Wang, the co-founder of FTX, Chris Larsen of Ripple, and the Winkelvoss twins, who own Gemini. Not everyone on the list is a developer or founder of a crypto startup. Several names are those of investors and venture capitalists, including Tim Draper and Mathew Rosack, both of whom became billionaires through early investments in Bitcoin and other crypto companies.
