The Middle East is in turmoil, but trying to understand the conflict in terms of simple geopolitics doesn't provide good answers. Iran is using proxies in Gaza, Lebanon, and Yemen to attack Israel and pressure the West. But Iran is a Shia nation while its most violent proxy, Hamas, is an arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, a Sunni group that wants to restore the caliphate—which was based in Turkey. Dr. Timothy Furnish, a scholar of Islamic eschatology, joins us to help untangle the web that binds together Shias and Sunnis, and Persians and Arabs, in their opposition to Israel and the West.We highly recommend Tim's books Holiest Wars, Ten Years' Captivation with the Mahdi's Camps, Sects, Lies and the Caliphate, and The COIN of the Islamic Realm.Tim's books are available in hard copy and Kindle format at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Timothy-R.-Furnish/author/B001KDHY64

In this episode, Joe lets Court Wing take lead in interviewing two of the leaders behind Clusterbusters: Founder and Executive Director, Bob Wold; and President, Eileen Brewer. A long-time friend of the show, Court Wing has become our resident expert on chronic pain, writing articles about how psilocybin relieved his chronic pain, and hosting Timothy Furnish, MD & Joel Castellanos, MD in their episode about phantom limb pain. Now he speaks with Clusterbusters, a non-profit dedicated to educating people about the horrors of cluster headaches, funding ongoing research into new treatments, and normalizing the miracle that psilocybin has been to so many sufferers in alleviating their headaches. Wold and Brewer discuss their past struggles (Wold is a cluster sufferer and Brewer has migraine disease) and discovering the amazing intervention of psychedelics; the battles they've gone through in spreading this knowledge; how using psychedelics is also helping people work through PTSD; the barriers that legal psilocybin is creating; the concept of schools having a drug education program; the research looking at cluster headaches and other headache diseases; their creation of the Pain And Psychedelics Association, and more. While cluster headache sufferers have a lot to be frustrated about; as psilocybin becomes more mainstream and more and more research is funded, they now have a lot of hope. www.psychedelicstoday.com

The United States this month moved its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to the ancient city of Jerusalem. Israel has always claimed Jerusalem as its capital, and the American Congress called for placing our embassy there since 1995. Israel hailed the move, as did many Americans, but there was condemnation from other corners. What are the political and religious implications of the embassy move? Middle East expert Dr. Timothy Furnish joins Kip Allen on today's episode to discuss this issue.

We witnessed one of God’s marvels this week, with a total eclipse of the sun. This rare event has often been associated with end times theology, especially in the early church. But for some in Islam, an eclipse can have a very special meaning. Many Sufi and Shia Muslims believe that a lunar eclipse on the first day of Islamic month of Ramadan, followed by a solar eclipse in the middle of the month, will signal the reign of the twelfth, or hidden, Imam, the one who will establish a worldwide Islamic rule. Those two eclipses will actually happen in the year 2027. Dr. Timothy Furnish, expert in Islamic history, speaks to these beliefs on today’s episode.

Scholars estimate that a fifth of the world's population is Muslim, and this figure is growing rapidly. Traditionally, very few people in the West are familiar with the specific beliefs of Islam, but in an increasingly interconnected global society, there is growing interest in gaining a clearer understanding of the faith. This text, written by an American scholar, highlights one of the lesser-known aspects of Islam called Mahdism, which centers belief on a rightly guided one, a prophet who will at some point return to earth to rally Muslims and make the world right. This belief is powerful and potentially dangerous, and deserves the attention it receives in this volume. Before September 11, 2001, most Western Islam scholars ignored Mahdism, dismissing it as a relic of Muslim history. However, today it is nearly impossible to ignore the topic, as we have seen first-hand the ways in which religious beliefs can lead to violent acts of terrorism. The Mahdist movement's very aim is to re-order global society into a Muslim community―a cause for which many Islamic faithful would gladly fight and give up their lives. This book serves as a guide to this aspect of Islam. Topics covered include: The Origins of Mahdism; Mahdist Movements throughout History; Counter-Mahdist Rationales and Policies; and Mahdism and Anti-Mahdism Today. While the text is richly detailed, the writing is nonetheless very readable and engaging, making it ideal for students of religious philosophy, for people wishing to understand what leads to religious wars, and indeed for all Americans living in the post-9/11 world.Review"This is probably the single most important book in English on this topic." - Evangelics Now"While cautious about designating any currently visible Islamic fundamentalist as the next Mahdi, Furnish argues that it is only a matter of time before Mahdism reemerges full-blown. And when that happens, all bets will be off and no rules will apply, inside or outside the Islamic community. It is a grim prospect - but one all too credible in the context of Furnish's scholarship." - MultiCultural Review"Throughout the history of Islam, a number of revolutionary movements have emerged that were centered on a rightly guided one who was meant to lead the world to rightness. These movements were based on a branch of Islam known as Mahdism, a topic that Timothy Furnish argues is overlooked in most discussions of the Middle East. Because of the potential of a Mahdist movement to create sweeping changes through violent means, Furnish believes Mahdism to be a particularly applicable subject to the modern context of the Middle East. Furnish addresses the origins of Mahdism, Mahdism throughout history, as well as the potential for a Mahdist movement in modern times." - Middle East Journal"[P]rovides a perspective on Mahdism, a belief in a messianic figure in Islamic tradition who will unite all Muslims, and debates within the Muslim world on whether bin Laden is that figure." - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution"Jews, Christians and Muslims will all profit from this book because it describes a tradition deeply rooted in all three religions and surprisingly relevant to the current geopolitical situation….[F]urnish writes about Mahdism, the Islamic tradition that anticipates the appearance of a messianic figure who will purify and unite Islam, eradicate all socioeconomic injustices in the world and establish the Muslim faith as a universal religion. This idea is rooted in Judaism, is similar to Christian eschatological ideas and is hotly debated throughout the Muslim world….Most fascinating (and fearful) are his musings about Osama bin Laden's Mahdist potential, especially considering this sobering assertion: Muslim messianic movements are to fundamentalist uprisings what nuclear weapons are to conventional ones: triggered by the same detonating agents, but far more powerful in scope and effect." - The Lexington Herald Leader/The Wichita Eagle/Birmingham News/The Dallas MorningAbout the AuthorTimothy R. Furnish teaches world history at Georgia Perimeter College. He learned Arabic while serving in U.S. Army Intelligence and received his doctorate in Islamic History from Ohio State University. His specialty is Islamic eschatology, particularly modern Mahdism―Islamic messianism―and how such beliefs have influenced revolutionary political thought in the Muslim world.
Have you ever heard the expression "it doesn’t translate"? This problem is especially prevalent today when trying to understand Arabic words and phrases from an Islamic culture that has an entirely different worldview than the west. Does the word "Islam" really mean peace, or do Christianity and Islam mean the same thing when using the word "martyr?" Mistranslation leads to misunderstanding. Kip Allen discusses this with Arabic linguist and Middle East expert Dr. Timothy Furnish.

Sufism is the mystical version of Islam and we explore with Dr. Furnish about it's origins, beliefs, and the various Sufi groups. We also discuss how Sufism is a more peaceful division of Islam, for the most part. We then talk about modern day Sufis such as Fethullah Gülen and his influence on what is going on in modern day Turkey.
