Food tastes better during a trip to the Boundary Waters. It's a common sentiment, one many visitors to the canoe-country wilderness can relate to. During a recent winter trip to the BWCA, the podcast team explored the notion that food is about much more than fuel for the body. It's about bringing people together. Superior National Forest Tribal Liaison Juan Martinez returns to the podcast in this episode, bringing a cooking "disco" to prepare burritos for a group of eight. In addition to Juan, the Great Josh Dix talks lake trout fishing at the start of the season, and Adam Mella from the Tumblehome podcast makes a cameo. Also featured in the episode is discussion about the 2023 Gunflint Mail Run, which brought throngs of people to the edge of the BWCA this year.

Solo travel is a transformative experience no matter how big or small the adventure may be, and sometimes it is exactly what you need to check in with reality, yourself, and the wider world around you. This week's 10Adventures podcast welcomes outdoor enthusiast and writer Brenda Missen, author of Tumblehome: One Woman's Canoeing Adventures in the Divine Near Wilderness.  Styled as “part spiritual memoir, part travel adventure, and great part ode to the Earth”, Tumblehome is a contemplative chronicle of Brenda's time spent solo canoeing through the 7,600km² expanse of Ontario's Algonquin Provincial Park. Listen in as we discuss the wide range of experiences spread across her decades of paddling in the wild, and how it has helped transform her life. For more information on Brenda's incredible journeys or to grab a print/digital copy of Tumblehome for yourself, visit brendamissen.com or amazon.

Nighttime on Still Waters

In this episode we walk through NB Erica and answer some of your questions about life aboard a narrowboat. We touch on the vexed question of whether it is 'port and starboard' or 'left and right', and we learn about tumblehome. Journal entry “28th October, Wednesday. Yesterday. More rain. Damp clings to the air. The sky is filled with greys and Prussian blue. The oaks on the skyline still hold on to their full summer shapes even though the ground is a patchwork of sodden leaves. Three Shetland ponies, stoic and comic in their friendly solidity, graze. Rain drips off the manes and coats. Their breath rises in clouds of sweet-smelling steam. We stand in a small group, each of us gazing in a different direction. Suddenly, the sun, stratus-cataracted, metallic, still wet from the waters of night, breaks through. Everything is transformed; an epiphanal transfiguration. The field shivers silver in the steaming air. The three ponies stand haloed in a fiery-white light, platinum bright, mute and solid. The air is filled with drifts of pearls that run down our faces. Is this Matthew’s field in which was buried a great treasure? How fitting he chose the Greek word θησαυρός [thesaurus] to describe it. Who knew that the treasure of great price was sun… and rain… and dawn’s imagination.” ContactFor pictures of Erica and images related to the podcasts follow me on:Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/noswpodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/nighttimeonstillwaters/Twitter: https://twitter.com/NoswPodI would love to hear from you. In 1991, Penny became a founding trustee of the Noyce Foundation, which supports K-12 mathematics and science education across the U.S. For nine years she also helped lead a statewide effort to improve mathematics, science, and technology education in Massachusetts. Currently she serves on the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.
