On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: Is the Giants' platoon system just a short-term solution to a rebuild or do you think it is the long-run goal? We saw how cheap and affordable it can be to find platoon players, but I've got to think SF is hoping for mostly everyday contributors in a couple years. Thoughts? With the Giants having so many platoon positions currently, do you see more teams implementing methods to take away the platoon advantage? What might be the best way for the Giants to combat this in the future? Which minor leaguers do you see being on the big league roster on opening day and/or at some point during the year. Both players making their debut and also guys who have been up but for just short periods of time. Do you think the Giants could pull off four starters and have relievers interspersed to cover the fifth day a la Sean Hjelle, Sammy Long, Tyler Beede, etc.? Do you think the Giants would consider a six-man rotation to protect some of the fragile arms that are presently in the starting rotation? Why not bring Johnny Cueto back as fifth starter? Among the questions asked and answered are: Who in the pitching development pipeline is going to start the most games for the 2022 Giants? Tyler Beede? Sammy Long? Sean Hjelle? Someone else? Do you think Darin Ruf could get regular/everyday playing time in left field next year? Your personal wants/hopes to come out of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement? To piggyback off some of the Carlos Correa questions, why don't they just go after him? With a year left for Evan Longoria, I know Farhan Zaidi can get creative with a trade even if they have to eat a chunk of the salary. After losing Buster Posey and possibly Brandon Belt after next year, Correa becomes the CAPTAIN. Do you think the Giants have moved off of Kris Bryant? It seems they may be willing to let someone else over pay. Follow & Subscribe to the Locked On Giants Podcast on these platforms

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants, with baseball's first work stoppage since 1994 underway. Among the questions asked and answered are: What's the plan in the rotation? Are they going to patch it together or make a big trade? Will they see how it goes and re-assess in season? How likely do you think the lack of moves is due to players on the cusp such as Heliot Ramos, Sean Hjelle, Kervin Castro? Is this the year Tyler Beede makes meaningful contributions at the major league level? Which starting pitchers do you see as most realistic trade targets? And what would it take to get them? How do you see the Giants patching up the outfield? Mike Yastrzemski seems he needs to be platooned, so I see them needing a RH and LH OF. Nick Castellanos/Joc Pederson? What do you see as the Giants' biggest need on offense? What players would you target to fit that need? Thoughts on this Forbes story from this morning, "San Francisco Giants' President Is An MLB Team Owner's Dream”? Do you see anyone on the 40 man likely to be traded? On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick joins Locked On A's host Jason Burke to discuss the possibility of an Oakland A's-San Francisco Giants swap. For the first time in a long time, it really does seem like these two teams could match up on a major trade. First, Jason asks Ben about the Giants' offseason needs. Naturally, as Giants fans know, the need is pitching, pitching, and more pitching. Starting pitching specifically. Ben explains that Logan Webb is the only player under contract for 2022, and that Kevin Gausman, Anthony DeSclafani, and Alex Wood are all free agents. Jason asks Ben to name any A's players the Giants might be interested in, and Ben names Chris Bassitt, Sean Manaea, and Frankie Montas—three good-to-great starters with relatively cheap arbitration years to come. Ben says that Bassitt and Manaea are his preferred targets, because they only have one year of control remaining (Montas has two), and that would make them cheaper for the Giants to acquire. Jason names some possible targets by the A's, including Luis Matos, Jairo Pomares, and Gregory Santos. Ben explains that Matos is flying up prospect rankings and won't be available in almost any trades. Pomares and Santos could be moved, and Ben adds that players who need to be projected from the Rule 5 Draft, as well as out-of-options players, could be available in any trade. Some of those names include Sean Hjelle, Seth Corry, Heliot Ramos, Tyler Beede, and Mauricio Dubón, among others. Follow & Subscribe to the Locked On Giants Podcast on these platforms

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: The Giants are a couple weeks out from when the roster will officially “crunch." Who on the active roster do you see gone by trade, option, or DFA? BABIP is a an indicator of lucky or unlucky hitting. Is there an equivalent for indicator for left-on-base ? Is seems like the Giants have left a ton on base, and maybe it's all just evening out because they've typically been scoring those guys. What role will Tyler Beede play post-All-Star break? Starter? Reliever? Neither? Why are the Giants so attached to Beede? His numbers are terrible. He still has control problems. Jake McGee throws a lot of pitches down the middle. When I heard he was a one pitch guy, I figured he had plus command. Strikes, yes; corners, no. Is this how he has historically pitched, or is he getting lucky this year? Does the fastball carry that much that this is expected to continue? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. As he has seemingly done a hundred times, Nolan Arenado delivered a big blow that put the Giants on their heels right away. He and Paul Goldschmidt have continued to haunt the Giants even after leaving the NL West. Johnny Cueto didn't have his best start, and the Giants offense could not battle all the way back despite numerous chances. Ben also talks about two questionable decisions by Gabe Kapler on today's show. John Brebbia was left in for a second inning after giving up a run in his first, and Steven Duggar tried to bunt with two on and nobody out in the 9th inning with the Giants trailing by just a run. A flurry of roster moves are also discussed. Prior to the game, the Giants activated Tyler Beede, recalled Jason Vosler, placed Jaylin Davis on the 10-day injured list, and designated Jimmie Sherfy for assignment. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers listeners' questions about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: Should Mike Yastrzemski be dropped in the order or given some days off? I see a lot of fans suggesting Gabe Kapler should give some of the struggling hitters like Yastrzemski or Mauricio Dubón a couple days rest as sort of a mental reset. What do you think of this strategy with hitters, or is it better to stay in nearly every day like those two players are now? Is there anything specific you see with Yastrzemski’s swing or approach at the plate that’s different from last year that might be leading to his continued struggles? Any bullpen guys that you think are on a short leash as in getting sent down? Do they have the bullpen depth they thought they did to start the season? I'm excited about Camilo Doval just based on his results and personality — but are there also specific quantitative reasons to be excited about him, like velocity, spin rate, etc.? What did the front office see in him that caused him to get promoted so aggressively? What is Tyler Beede's impact this year? Who would be your choice to replace Donovan Solano on the active roster if he is put on the IL? Jason Vosler, Thairo Estrada, another outfielder? How does this stockpiling pitching depth work with roster spots since veterans often opt out if they don’t make the MLB club? Would Shun Yamaguchi consider starting in Triple-A? With the rosters back to 26, it seems like either Ruf or Donovan Solano may be expendable. If they do get dealt, what would they bring back? I can’t wait for this wave of prospects to be ready. Who do you think will be the first to make an impact on the big club? Where do you see Tyler Beede fitting into the rotation and how do you think he’ll do? Adding to that, might Beede make a home in the bullpen? You brought up Jaylin Davis on the podcast yesterday. He only got 12 at-bats last year before getting the hook and was kind of forgotten about. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, Ben Kaspick talks about the 2021-22 free agent class, and how it might affect the San Francisco Giants this offseason. The Giants certainly have some areas of need this year, namely starting pitcher, and they figure to go into the 2022 offseason in an even more dire situation. Kevin Gausman, Johnny Cueto, and Anthony DeSclafani are all set to be free agents after the 2021 season, which will leave the Giants with just Logan Webb, Tyler Beede, and any other inexperienced players as the only starting pitchers under team control for 2022 and beyond. In that case, should the Giants be looking to lock up starting pitchers to multiyear deals now? Trevor Bauer seems like a strong fit. Next year's free agent class has some intriguing names, but do the Giants want to face such enormous uncertainty? That question becomes especially pressing when it is considered that Buster Posey, Brandon Belt, and Brandon Crawford are also set to reach free agency after the 2021 season. The Giants have just about $23M committed for 2022, so it remains an extremely open and pressing question as to when, or if, they're going to spend real money. Are you familiar with how an MLB Draft signing bonus is paid out? It’s not about what you sign for, but about what you keep. Historically, teams have split the gross amount into two equal payments over two years. The most costly mistake? Believing this is non-negotiable. As a player, your ultimate goal is not the gross (before tax) MLB Draft signing bonus amount; rather, it is the net (after-tax) amount. How your signing bonus is structured will have the greatest impact on how much money you receive. In this episode, Travis and Erik discuss this topic and cover commonly asked questions like: How do I pay the least amount of taxes? The key players you need on your advisory team. Who is responsible to make sure the after-tax planning gets done? How are bonuses taxed by states? Is it based on where you live? The team you’re assigned to? What is the difference between a financial advisor and a certified financial planner? What is the difference between a broker/dealer and a registered investment advisor?   In this episode, we breakdown the incredible opportunity an amateur player has to become a professional baseball player. We detail what's the probability, the career trajectory, and pathway to navigate the MLB Draft process successfully. It's hard to encapsulate the excitement surrounding the upcoming MLB Draft. Years of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication all point to this one day. Becoming a pro. It's a rare opportunity to realize a childhood dream, but equally as important, it's an opportunity to change your financial future. With one announcement from the podium, players will move from asking their parents for lunch money to becoming one of America’s wealthiest. In last year's draft: $316 million paid to draftees $128 million of that was on the first 34 picks 71 players signed for $1 million or more Only two players drafted in the top 10 rounds did not sign 73% of the first-round draft picks play in the major leagues according to Baseball America Baseball is a game. Professional baseball is a business. You are now responsible for thinking about your career from a business standpoint and you're going to be forced to make decisions, whether you make them well or not, they will have a significant impact on your current and your future life.   How confident are you that you chose the right agent? In a $10 billion industry, it brings a host of characters that want a piece of your business. It can be difficult to know who are the people that have the expertise and the experience to help you. Too often, the only advice you receive is to do your due diligence. But that assumes you know what questions to ask, which is largely untrue. So what ends up happening is families are trying to do the best they can, but end up asking the wrong questions, and when you ask the wrong questions, you're going to get an answer, it's just the wrong answer. In this podcast, we provide a framework and the right questions to ask when choosing your sports agent. What are the needs a player has? Who is qualified to meet those needs? What are the three types of employees of an agency that the MLBPA regulates? Is an agent worth paying 4-5% commission on your signing bonus? Can your agent get your drafted higher?   Should you sign a professional contract or head to campus? This is the decision every high school or college player with eligibility will make this upcoming June. This looming decision will have a dramatic impact on the trajectory of your baseball career and life. How prepared and confident are you that you would make the right decision? Many factors should be considered when deciding to sign a professional contract; however, for the majority of players, it’s a question of money. The question the industry is asking is, “What’s Your Number?” The reality is: everyone has a different “number,” and there is a lot of work that should go into it. This will be the most significant financial decision of your life. How much you sign for, the taxes you pay, and what you do with that money will have enormous consequences. So how much is enough? In episode two, we breakdown the process of what it takes to determine your number. We believe if you follow the process we layout, you can have a lot of confidence going into draft day. Regardless of where you end up being selected, you will have a definitive path to make the decision that is right for you. The Giants went 3-3 since our last podcast, but after losing the first two in Miami, I think most Giants fans will be quite pleased with winning 3 of 4 since then. But, let's be honest: going 3-3 against two of the worst teams in the league is disappointing, but also a barometer of where this Giants team is amongst the 30 clubs. We talk about the great performances of Shaun Anderson, Tyler Beede, and Jeff Samardzija, Crawford's 2 homer game, two easy wins in Baltimore, scoring 5 in the first inning just to give up 6 to the Orioles in the bottom half of the first, we review May's atrocious stats (spoiler: the starting pitching stats are the worst in SF history for ANY month), we preview the MLB draft (Giants have the 10th overall pick), who's hot and not, and much more!  Don't forget to check out our weekly "This Week in Giants History" at www.torturecast.com! @torturecast facebook.com/torturecast
