Located in Bigfork, Montana, just outside Glacier National Park, an Averill family tradition since 1945, the ranch has hosted tens of thousands of guests from more than 104 countries, and has been featured on Good Morning America, Animal Planet, Wide World of Sports and more. Doug Averill is a member of the National Dude Ranchers Hall of Fame and the Montana Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. Now Doug and his son, Chase, are leading the lodge into the next generation. Alan Averill is best known for being the vocalist and front man for Irish Metal legends Primordial, but he is also an engaging, fascinating, intelligent, politically minded, well-read, heavily tattooed bad-ass.  Alan is a singular voice in metal, an anomaly in some ways.  I Hate Music considers him to be one of the best front men in metal, and his voice, and his band, to be one of the most unique and underrated.    With Alan we discuss the erasure of cultures, the significance of travel, the importance of heritage, and the obsessive nerdism that comes with being a lifer in the metal scene.   We also dig into a listener email, and catch up on some current happenings. **Note:  This was recorded before the American Presidential Election in 2024.   -------------------- Hosts:  Jason Walton and Nick Wusz. Bajo el contexto inicial de las artes plásticas se produce de modo natural la traslación, o mejor la ampliación, al arte de la música. When asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she would reply with professions such as detective, writer, or world traveler. She shares, “I have a restless mind and a zest for life. My parents were protective of us growing up, but I always wanted to live a more exciting life.” As far back as she can remember, she loved drawing. When preparing for college, she knew “it was either going to be writing or art. Baseball is full of surprises. You never know when you walk into a ballpark if you might see a perfect game, a runner caught in a pickle, a measuring-tape home run…or an historic legal precedent! On August 20th, 1955, Earl Averill, Jr of the Nashville Vols punched Lyle Luttrell of the Chattanooga Lookouts in an on-field skirmish. Luttrell ended up with a broken jaw, Averill ended up with a lawsuit, and both wound up in the history books for setting a legal precedent that shocked both sports and the courts, and shaped both sports and employment law for decades to come. Join host Dave Stripling of Tennessee Court Talk, and guests Judge Andy Bennett of the Tennessee Court of Appeals and Randy Averill for the star-studded tale of “The Hit Heard Round The State!” Produced and Edited by Dave Stripling Supervising Producer: Nick MorganMUSIC ATTRIBUTION:Jumpin Boogie Woogie by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Artist: http://audionautix.com/Happy Bee Surf by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1300015Artist: http://incompetech.com/Last Kiss Goodnight by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100611Artist: http://incompetech.com/

EMG's Book Sentimental State. Episode #4 of 4. In this episode, Marissa and Averill uncover the harrowing real story behind a wave of forced migration from early 18th century Paris to the struggling French territories along the Gulf Coast. Driven by underpopulation woes and a charlatan's get-rich-quick scheme, over 100 women were quite literally rounded up from prisons and poorhouses under dubious accusations of "debauchery" and "prostitution." Their journey into this cruel human trafficking operation is laid bare through the meticulous research of historian Joan DeJean. You'll hear how an ambitious and ruthless warden conspired with corrupt officials to clear Paris' streets by falsifying charges against poor servant girls, foreigners, and even women simply deemed "inconvenient" by their own families. Branded as criminals but guilty of little more than poverty, these so-called "corrections girls" were then abandoned in hellish conditions at the Crown's fledgling outposts with no provisions. Yet many survived through grit and resilience, going on to become founders of New Orleans' aristocracy. Find transcripts and show notes at: digpodcast.org Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 036: Athletes are often stereotyped as prone to making poor financial decisions. While this perception is unfair, the real problem lies in a lack of financial education. This gap can leave them susceptible to mismanagement and potentially risky financial ventures. Fortunately, with the right tools and support, professional and college athletes can overcome these obstacles and build a legacy of wealth far beyond the playing field. In this episode of The Connected Advisor, Kyle is joined by Brandon Averill, Partner at AWM Capital and former professional baseball player. They discuss the unique challenges and opportunities in serving professional athletes and their families. He emphasizes the importance of education in managing finances, shares insights on the complexities of athlete taxation, and highlights the impact of the recent NIL legislation on college athletes. Join us as we discuss: [01:55] - Brandon's money moment that led him to the financial advisory industry. [04:17] - How athletes can create multi-generational wealth. [07:28] - The importance of financial education for athletes. [09:53] - The emergence of NIL deals in college baseball.  [11:01] - Athletes' income and tax allocation. [14:28] - The impact of content creation on business growth. [18:00] - The regenerative nature of the sports market. [19:54] - The challenges of finding and retaining talent. [22:00] - People, technology, and systems integration at AWM Capital. [24:13] - Brandon's outlook on the future of the industry. [26:12] - Brandon's Milemarker minute: best baseball park in America, favorite wine, travel destination, and the best part of being a financial advisor. Key Takeaways AWM Capital focuses on serving athletes and their families, providing a human-centered family office approach to create multi-generational wealth and financial success. Athletes face unique financial challenges and stereotypes due to a lack of financial education and guidance. It is crucial to provide education and support to help them make informed financial decisions. The recent NIL compensation for college athletes has created new opportunities and challenges in managing their wealth. Quotes "The athlete gets this bad rap like we're this uneducated, blowing money-type situation. We do a terrible job as a country of educating athletes on finances. So, to us, it wasn't an athlete problem. It's an education problem." ~ Brandon Averill "Money is just a tool. So, you always want to focus on making sure that you're doing the proper things to maximize your wealth, which could ultimately impact your family or the causes you care about." ~ Brandon Averill "It's unfortunate that most of the wealth, even in sports, is still controlled by brokers in wirehouses. We felt like that wasn't the best way to do it." ~ Brandon Averill  Links  Brandon Averill on LinkedIn Brandon Averill on Twitter AWM Capital Morgan Stanley Brian Cain Peak Performance Deovlet Sonny Boy Red Connect with our hosts Milemarker.co Kyle on LinkedIn Jud on LinkedIn Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify YouTube Google Podcasts Produce game-changing content with Turncast Turncast helps your company grow by producing top-quality content and fostering transformative conversations. “Keep a little fire burning; however small, however hidden.” — Cormac McCarthyHope is fundamental to human existence. It is paradoxical in its duality, however, as its very existence implies the possibility of despair (Lynch, 1962). This dialectic between hope and despair is central to considerations of chronic illness management, as well as to studies of the relationship between expectations and the placebo effect (Corbett, et al., 2007; Ratcliffe, 2011). Hope influences expectation, but is a distinct and multifaceted cognitive, embodied, and broadly existential experience (Mattingly, 2010). In order to maintain hope when faced with a situation that appears hopeless, individuals must navigate multiple contradictions between reality and possibility, embrace cultural notions of what is deemed acceptable to hope for, and be attentive to the hopes and concerns of significant others (Averill and Sundararajan, 2005; Chesla, 2005; DelVecchio Good, et al., 1990; Sulmasy, et al., 2010; Brown, 2015).RESOURCE: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4721951/GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. From there Michael has started his own podcast for songwriters and become a one on one coach in the acclaimed program Produce Like a Boss helping music makers learn how to generate income from their home studio. Welcome to Part 2 of our two-part special, "Not Just a Game: Student Athletes & Opioids." As fall sports begin, this episode takes a comprehensive look at the alarming issue of opioid misuse among student athletes. Our expert guest, Dr. Averill Sutchar, Founder of Physio Project HQ, brings his expertise in sports injuries and physical therapy to the discussion. We explore the reasons behind opioid misuse, particularly in the context of managing pain and injuries among young athletes. Join co-hosts Jodie Sweetin and Amy McCarthy, along with celebrity guest Ryan Grant and Taylor Hooton Foundation Founder, Donald Hooton Jr, as we discuss the potential risks and long-term health effects associated with steroid and opioid use.  Dr. Sutchar also sheds light on how parents and mentors can recognize signs of misuse and offers practical advice to protect student athletes' health and well-being. As a critical conversation for parents of student athletes, this episode aims to equip caregivers with the knowledge and tools to ensure the safety and success of young athletes. Key takeaways:  Opioid misuse is a critical issue among student athletes, particularly when managing pain and injuries. Dr. Averill Sutchar emphasizes the need to be aware of the potential risks and long-term health effects associated with opioid use. Parents and mentors play a crucial role in recognizing signs of misuse and protecting the health and well-being of student athletes. Non-opioid alternatives for pain management should be considered and explored whenever possible. Early education and awareness about the risks of opioid misuse are essential for student athletes and their support systems. Taking pain seriously and being intentional about how pain is treated can prevent opioid misuse. Opioids can have significant effects on the body, and it doesn't take long for someone to become addicted. Seeking professional guidance and talking to the child's healthcare providers are essential steps in addressing opioid-related concerns. Student athletes should be empowered to prioritize their long-term well-being over short-term solutions. Parents, coaches, and mentors should foster an environment that prioritizes the health and safety of student athletes over winning at all costs. BIOS: Donald Hooton Jr. is one the most sought after speakers in North America on the subject of Appearance and Performance Enhancing Substances use by youth. Donald serves as President for the Taylor Hooton Foundation which he helped his parents found in 2004, the year following the loss of his younger brother Taylor. Taylor died after using anabolic steroids. @thethf Dr. Averill is the Founder of Physio Project HQ. Averill received his bachelors in Psychology from the University of San Diego in 2008 where he played linebacker for Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. He went on to complete his Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Creighton University. Averill has a special interest in the treatment of sports injuries, various orthopedic conditions, and spinal conditions. His emphasis is a manual treatment approach, which includes one on one treatment while prescribing therapeutic exercises progressively over the course of his treatment. @physioprojecthq Ryan Grant is a former American football running back in the National Football League (NFL) known for his impressive career with the Green Bay Packers. He was a part of the Packers' Super Bowl XLV championship team in 2010. Ryan Grant's journey from his early years in New York and New Jersey to his success in the NFL remains a testament to his determination and skill on the field. @ryan.grant Elks: As a 150-year-old organization, they are 100% inclusive with a membership of close to 1 million diverse men and women in over 2,000 Lodges nationally, and while they consider themselves faith based, they are nondenominational and open to all creeds. Earl Averill, the Earl of Snohomish, was born on the 21st of May, 1902, in Snohomish, Washington, was an American professional baseball player who achieved great success during the 1930s and 1940s. Averill is best known for his remarkable career as an outfielder for the Cleveland Indians in Major League Baseball (MLB).Nicknamed "The Earl of Snohomish," Averill quickly established himself as one of the premier hitters in the game. With his powerful left-handed swing, he became a consistent offensive force for the Indians, known for his ability to hit for both average and power. Averill possessed exceptional skills as a five-tool player, combining hitting prowess, speed, a strong throwing arm, and excellent fielding abilities. In 1936, Averill had his finest season, achieving personal and team success. He led the league in runs batted in (RBIs) with 127, earning him the American League RBI title. Averill also finished third in the league's Most Valuable Player (MVP) voting that year. The Indians, led by Averill's stellar performance, clinched the American League pennant and advanced to the World Series but fell short against the New York Giants.Over his career, Averill made multiple All-Star Game appearances, displaying his consistent excellence and earning the respect of his peers. Known for his gentlemanly conduct both on and off the field, Averill was highly regarded as a role model and ambassador for the sport.Sadly, Averill's career coincided with an era when statistics were not as meticulously recorded as they are today, making it difficult to fully appreciate his accomplishments. Nevertheless, his impact on the game and his place in baseball history cannot be denied. Averill finished his career with a lifetime batting average of .318, 238 home runs, and 1,164 RBIs.Earl Averill retired from professional baseball in 1941, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the greatest players to don a Cleveland Indians uniform. It is estimated that 1 in every 5 fish caught, comes from illegal fishing. With numbers like that it is no surprise that these fish may end up on our plates and we unknowingly support these illegal practices. Alan is well known for his musical accomplishments, but also his own (excellent) podcast,* and what follows is a fascinating conversation on both his own work and the development of extreme metal, from the late 80s to today. Alan and TBMG variously touch on the original nature of black metal, the history of the greater UK scene, and the legitimacy of board shorts in death metal- so, without question, this interview is one for the ages. If we want to better understand the environment and combat climate change, we need to look deep underground, where diverse microscopic fungal networks mingle with tree roots to form symbiotic partnerships, says microbiologist Colin Averill. As we learn more about which of these fungi are most beneficial to forest health, we can reintroduce them into the soil -- potentially enhancing the growth and resilience of carbon-trapping trees and plants. Hear more about the emerging science aiming to supercharge forest ecosystems, one handful of soil at a time.

Can Fungi Fix the Climate Crisis? Colin Averill and Funga Are Working on it

You've heard of flora (plants). You've heard of fauna (animals). But have you heard of funga? That's the relatively new way to describe this third kingdom of life on earth: the vast number of species of fungi which aren't plants nor animals, but are a different branch on the tree of life. And it turns out that fungi are a lot more important than many in the past have realized. In fact,  they seem to play a major role in just how much carbon the soil is storing. Certain fungi, it seems, are particularly effective at sequestering carbon than others and in making trees grow a lot faster. Some even say that a one percent increase in soil-based carbon could be sufficient to stop an increase in CO2 in the atmosphere. Enter mycologist and entrepreneur Colin Averill and his new startup Funga. Having just raised a million dollars of seed venture capital, he's seeking to start reforesting depleted land and converting it into biodiverse carbon sinks much faster than would otherwise occur.  Think of it kind of like a fecal transplant (yep), but instead, it's more like a fungal transplant. It may sound disgusting, but we know that you can take feces from a healthy person, inoculate (aka insert) a sick person with them, and the good microbes populate the colon of the sick person, turning them well. Similarly, you can take rich, biodiverse soil from a healthy, old growth forest and inoculate agriculturally depleted land with it, and biodiverse life returns, causing trees to grow up to three times faster than they normally would (wood?). So, how do you make a business out of reforesting ex-agricultural land? Let Colin give you the scoop (of soil) on how he and Funga are going to monetize this type of carbon capture.  Discussed in this episode In a Vox story on deforestation, they note: "It's not toilet paper or hardwood floors or even palm oil. It's beef. Clearing trees for cattle is the leading driver of deforestation, by a long shot. It causes more than double the deforestation that's linked to soy, oil palm, and wood products combined, according to the World Wildlife Fund." Local FOX coverage of Funga's work. Our past episodes with Global Thermostat (direct carbon capture) and Coral Vita (rehabilitation of coral reefs). This CNN story about a startup called Living Carbon making faster-growing trees. Colin loves the book Entangled Life and the podcast My Climate Journey. More about Colin Averill Dr. Colin Averill is a Senior Scientist at ETH Zürich's Crowther Lab, where he and his team study the forest microbiome. How does incredible microbial diversity affect which trees are in a forest, forest carbon sequestration and climate change forecasts? He focuses on the ecology of mycorrhizal fungi - fungi that form a symbiosis with the roots of most plants on Earth. In addition to his academic role, he is the Founder of Funga PBC, a new startup harnessing forest fungal networks to address the climate crisis. He is also co-founder of SPUN – the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks – a non-profit dedicated to documenting and protecting mycorrhizal fungal life across the planet.
