Today's inspiring guest is Michele Horovitz. Michelle is one of the co-founders and Executive Director of Appetite For Change (AFC), a nonprofit social enterprise organization dedicated to using food as a tool to build health, wealth and social change. AFC works with residents to build strong families and healthy, equitable communities around food. They also own and operate Kindred Kitchen, a shared commercial kitchen incubator and Breaking Bread Café and Catering, a youth social enterprise serving North Minneapolis. Michelle graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in Bioethics and Spanish and earned a J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School. She worked as an Assistant Public Defender in Miami-Dade County before working for James Beard Award winning Chef Michelle Bernstein as a prep cook, line cook and assistant to the pastry chef. After returning to Minneapolis she co-founded Appetite For Change. She is a dedicated leader, passionate about social and racial justice, and serves on the Board of Directors for Jewish Community Action. Michelle enjoys yoga, biking and spending time with her family and friends. She lives in Minneapolis with her husband, two children, two dogs and 1 hamster. In this inspiring episode Michelle discusses how eating healthy is tough for everyone, regardless of age, family status, how much time or money you have.  She then explains how living in a community without farmers markets, healthy retail options, limited grocery store availability and reliable transportation make it so much harder. We talk about how people often think that low-income communities just don't know what healthy is, or care about eating well, but it's often the policies systems, and the environment around us that influences our eating habits. Often times communities lack resources to solve their own health issues, but they don't need to be told what the solutions are, or "saved" by people who live outside their communities. It's more about the resources, social networks and assets in a community that prevent people from achieving their wellness goals. We also discuss how health and wellness means different things for different people, but it's often stereotypes and fears of the unknown that keep us from trying new things. For example: black people aren't vegan, eating "healthy" is a white person thing, you have to have a lot of money to eat fresh and local foods, growing your own food is hard and you can't do it if you don't own your own property, etc. We also hear all all about the foundation, the cafe, catering company, community garden and all the other amazing things her organization is working on - including a super cool rap video "Grow Food." Michelle ends by sharing a powerful story about a woman, her journey and how Appetite for Change impacted her life. Muskegon History and Beyond with the Lakeshore Museum Center

For over 100 years the red Union Depot building has stood out from its surroundings on Western Avenue. When it first opened its importance to bringing in tourist, visitors, and new residents was immense. Over the years its importance declined but thankfully the building remained to be transformed into the center of tourism again in Muskegon as the Muskegon County Convention & Visitor's Bureau and now the home of Visit Muskegon. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/patrick-horn/support

Producer/Engineer: Bill Pollock Editor: Sarah Rendo Cover: Rob Mitchell   The Union Depot Train Station was an architectural marvel, but it was built in the middle of a floodplain and in 1904 the Union Depot was completely flooded. When preparations for a new train station began, city planners began to focus on a strip of land adjacent to the O.K. Creek. It was agreed that if the waters of the O.K. Creek could be diverted and channeled underground, that this would be the ideal location for a train station.   And so the city began to confront that wrinkle. City officials began to contact all the plants and animals living along the creek, telling them they had 30 days notice to vacate their creekside parcels.   Waterproof notes were handed out to all the fish and turtles. Eviction notices were seed pasted to the nests of the local waterfowl and all the street cats were contacted. Every cricket and water bug was notified via paper boats. Cattails and creekside willows are no dummies. They read the writing on the ripples of the water and de-rooted themselves. The creek water became salty with the tears of all the plants and animals and it was stained with the blood of thousands of dead tadpoles. The bullfrog community agreed that death was preferable to a forced migration.   With heavy hearts, most of the creatures accepted their fate. Except for the crawdads.   Crawdads are blue shelled luddites - freshwater lurkers who don't take kindly to trespassers and their ilk. When they heard the news they tapped into the old alliance and sent an owl to the mayor’s office with a note of their own. It read:   “Dear present administration,   Mess with the tiny daddies and you'll get the claws. Rome will burn before we surrender our homes. You ugly, ugly, shit head man!"   The mayor laughed and crumpled the note in the newspaper.  His administration did not respond to threats from hooligans. If he would have listened, perhaps a great horror would have been avoided, perhaps a mighty disaster would have been circumvented - but a massive collision was being prepared and it would not be denied by the watchful eye of history.   Thus, on the debut evening of the first train rolling into the new train station, just as the mayor prepared to clip the dedication ribbon with the scissors of great purpose, an army of 9,000 crawdads surged over the nearby hill. And they did not stop at the appointed boundaries, but began to pinch noses, pinch butts, and pinch ankles. Shovels were produced by the train station police, but even as they smashed one or two crawdads, more crawdads began climbing into the conductor’s cab and twisting the machine to and fro until the great machine - the great machine that had upset them from their homes - toppled over and burst into flames.   The records show that the rebellion lasted for one hour, until Donnie Turtle, the master crawdad smasher of Raytown, began to stomp on the their shells. And in ten minutes he had killed almost all of the crawdads, and in the eleventh minute Turtle pulled out a giant sprayer and began to wash their parts into a nearby drainage ditch.

Finally, there is a light rail line connecting the Twin Cities. The Green Line, running 11 miles from Union Depot in downtown St. Paul to Target Field in downtown Minneapolis, cost $957 million and several decades to build. The process of choosing stations was contentious but eventually embraced the proposals of the low-income communities that wanted stations, and the line is already being looked at as a model. It's not the fastest way between the two downtowns, but it might be the best way. Jeff and Tanya discuss. Then we sink our teeth into the Sightline Institute's proposal to change the property tax structure in order to incentivize better uses of downtown space. That might help some cities with their parking crater problem. And finally, we rejoice at Calgary's decision to tear down a whole mess of parking outside one of its light rail stations, and we discuss the balancing act between preserving broad access to transit and creating walkable, compact communities where they belong: near transit.  We can't wait to read your thoughts in the comments.
