Revisiting Our Town

From Amy:My junior year in high school, we read Thornton Wilder's play Our Town in English class. My senior year, that same English teacher, Carol Ottoson, directed the play and cast me as the Stage Manager. That role, which spends so much time reflecting on details in life and their meaning, had a huge influence on how I see the world, and I'm certain that's rubbed off on me as a writer of creative nonfiction: how I make sense of small details, the things that matter, the people around me, and how they all connect to each other. It seems to me that I would be a different person if not for that experience, and the understanding that I had a voice that carries, and that I can use it for good in the world. So when I went with my husband to a recent production of Our Town at a neighboring high school, I was delighted to run into my old castmate (and previous podcast guest) Cory Busse, himself a writer, whose daughter was now in the show. We both agreed that this play was something special, something that had a huge impact on both of us, and something that holds up across time. So I reached out to our former English teacher, Carol Ottoson, and the three of us recorded a reunion conversation. It's the perfect introduction to my latest podcast season.I am reminded all the time that story is powerful. Connection to each other is powerful. And we have no idea the impact that stories will have on us until long after they're told. Some stories have our attention a moment. But some stories—and some people—make an indelible mark. And if that's not a worthy reason to make our artwork and write our stories and engage in creative play with each other, I'm not sure what is. Carol Ottoson (Otto) retired from teaching, coaching, and directing after 36 years in the classroom, including 24 in the Prior Lake Savage (MN) School District. She continues to sub in the district. She directed theater for thirty years and coached speech for 34 years. Carol and her husband Keith have been married for over 51 years and have two adult children, Heather and Andy, two sons-in-law, Collan and Branden, and two grandsons, Zach and Jameson. Carol and her husband enjoy traveling and are frequently on the road somewhere. Carol also occasionally preaches at her local church (htumc.org). They are a reconciling congregation, and promote inclusivity.Follow Carol on Facebook  or email her directly at ottoem50@aol.com.  Cory Busse was once voted "Sexiest Man Alive" by Cory Busse Magazine whose audience boasts more than zero Cory Busses.Follow "Tales from the Christmas Village," a way to keep the spirit of snark alive in your heart all year long.   Amy Hallberg is the author of Tiny Altars: A Midlife Revival and German Awakening: Tales from an American Life. Merry Christmas you beautiful people. It's a packed show so let's not mess about.First up it's Santa Claus is NOT Coming to Town, and listener Timothy Dumont has shared the story of how he spoiled the myth of Santa to a bunch of teenagers.Do you know the difference between a Sidewalk and Pavement?  Well there isn't one and, in Do You Hear What I Hear, Bob Baker explains it all. Then it's our yearly visit to Shelli and Frank Arnold's Christmas village.  It's a true work of art and if you want to check it out I've put a bunch of pictures on Facebook.Next up we chat to Steven A McKay. He's a historical fiction writer and each year he writes a novella or short story featuring the characters from his Robin Hood series.  This year's book has two stories, The Heretic of Haltemprice Priory and The Winter Hunt.If you want to check it out, here's a link:https://amzn.eu/d/b54tTF4We also play Wassail The Night Away. A song written by Steven and his podcast co-host.This episode's version of A Christmas Carol is Blackadder's Christmas Carol, but if you want to hear it you'll have to go to The Advent Calendar House Podcast, where I chat about it with host Mike Westfall. Here's a link:https://adventcalendar.house/episodes/blackadders-christmas-carolThen Bob Baker is back with Spread a Smile of Joy.  The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear, so why not go carol singing this year and spread some joy around your neighbourhood.Check out Bob's podcast here:https://4fpodcast.buzzsprout.com/Then Jeanie Mulligan is back to have another go at The Quiz.See if you can beat her score (you shouldn't find it too hard). This episode's recommendation is I'm Not Complaining with Robin and Juno.   In the mid-20th century, Hartford's G. Fox and Co. was one of the most successful family-owned department stores in the United States. Today, many Connecticans have fond memories of visiting G. Fox at the holiday season -- marvelling at the Christmas Village atop the marquee and meeting Santa in Toyland. In this episode, Natalie Belanger and Jen Busa of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History talk about the history of the store, owner Beatrice Fox Auerbach's commitment to customer service, and the holiday traditions that so many customers still remember.    You'll hear snippets from oral histories conducted in the 2000s by the Stave Group for the Connecticut Museum. Transcripts and audio files of these oral histories are available at the CT Digital Archive, a collaborative member organization that supports digital preservation and access for all Connecticut's people. The voices you heard today were those of Ann Uccello,  Bruce Blawie, Ruth Blawie, Betty Jane Ladd, Bruce Stave, and Fanny Raptopolous.   Want to try making the Date Nut Bread that Jen and Natalie made for this episode? Here's the recipe, as published in the Hartford Courant February 26, 2009.   G. FOX & CO.'S DATE NUT BREAD RECIPE 1 cup dates, pitted and chopped into 1/4-inch pieces 1 cup sugar 1 cup boiling water 1/2 cup shortening 2 eggs, well beaten 2 cups flour 1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped 1 teaspoon vanilla Grease a 9-by-5-inch pan. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Place dates and sugar in a large mixing bowl. In a saucepan, combine the water and shortening and simmer until shortening is melted. Pour over dates and sugar, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Cool slightly. Stir mix ingredients with a wooden spoon, not an electric mixer. Add eggs, beating well. Combine dry ingredients. Stir into date mixture until well blended. Batter may be slightly lumpy. Add walnuts and vanilla. Turn batter into greased loaf pan and bake one hour until center of loaf springs back when touched. Cool thoroughly before removing from pan.   Image credit: G. Fox 1969 holiday catalogue, CMCH collection 2020.57.25   Hear more about how G. What a magical time of the year! Christmas preparations are underway throughout the village, and the plaza clamors with happy noise. Neighbors call out friendly greetings and tidings of joy. Hoofbeats echo off the cobblestones as wagonloads of fresh-cut trees arrive at the marketplace. The impatient horses snort small white clouds into the wintry air. Exuberant children, their eyes bright like the twinkling strings of colored lights overhead, dash recklessly among the shoppers laden with holiday parcels. Merchants scurry to serve their customers, cheerful doorbells tinkling as the patrons come and go. Everyone is eager for the festivities to begin. At the church, carolers rehearse while the rector readies the bells to proclaim the good news. Each wreath, each shiny ornament, and each candle in the window hails the holiday season. The eternal spirit of Christmas flourishes here, and all are welcome! ---

7 Wonderful Ways to Experience Christmas in Reykjavik, Iceland

All Things Iceland Podcast

The Christmas season is in full swing in Iceland. Many of my podcast listeners and followers on social media have asked about some awesome ways to experience Christmas in Iceland. Back in 2019, I shared 16 Christmas Activities to Do While Visiting Iceland on the podcast. While that list is still helpful, I wanted to update it a bit and provide some more links to activities that you might find helpful.Iceland during Christmas is a wonderland of unique traditions and festive activities, particularly in the Reykjavík area. Here are six reasons why these activities make for an unforgettable holiday experience: 1. Icelandic Christmas Buffet The Christmas season in Iceland is rich with culinary traditions, and the local buffet is a must-try. It's not just about the food, which includes delicacies like hangikjöt (smoked lamb) and laufabrauð (leaf bread), but also about the experience of sharing these traditional dishes in a festive atmosphere. It's a perfect way to immerse yourself in Icelandic culture. One of my favorite things is that there are regular Christmas buffets and all vegan ones. I had the pleasure of going to an all vegan one at Plantan Kaffihús, a vegan cafe in the city, and it was phenomenal.I have also been to ones that are mixed, like at Hotel Borg. If you plan to experience an Icelandic Christmas buffet, make sure to show up hungry and open to trying types of cuisine that you might not ordinarily come across. 2. A Reykjavik Christmas Walking Tour This guided tour by Your Friend in Reykjavik is a fantastic way to explore the city's Christmas spirit. It offers a blend of history, culture, folklore, and holiday cheer, providing insights into how Icelanders celebrate Christmas. The walk around Reykjavík's beautifully decorated streets, filled with stories and local lore, is an intimate way to experience the city's festive heart. If you use my code ALLTHINGSICELAND (in all caps) you can save 10% on your Christmas Walk with Your Friend in Reykjavík. 3. Hunt for the Icelandic Yule Lads in Reykjavík The Yule Lads are a unique and quirky part of Icelandic Christmas folklore. Searching for their projections on downtown buildings turns the city into a playful and magical scavenger hunt. It's a fun, family-friendly activity. On Reykjavik city's website, they announced fun prizes that they are giving away for those who participate in the scavenger hunt. I have a link to that in the description of this episode on my website. In December of 2021, I shared the Yule Lads poem on my podcast in Icelandic and English for each of the 13 days that they each come to town. I started on that day to introduce their troll mother Grýla and other members of their family, like the Yule Cat. 4. Ice Skating at Ingólfstorg Square Located in the heart of Reykjavík, ice skating here is not just an activity; it's an experience. Surrounded by the city's festive lights and lively atmosphere, it's a picturesque way to enjoy the Icelandic winter.Usually, there are Icelandic santas, or Yule Lads, hanging out on the ice and playing with the kids. One warning that I think is worth mentioning is that the ice-skating rink here is not smooth. It is a bit bumpy for a rink, so please be aware that can be harder to smoothly skate and easy to potentially fall. I am not sure why they are not able to make it smooth, especially since the ice-skating rink in Hafnarfjörður's Christmas market is very smooth. I love to ice skate, so I had a blast doing it but I had to catch myself from falling a few times. Just a heads up for those that want to try it. 5. Visiting Icelandic Christmas Markets: The Icelandic Christmas Markets in the Reykjavík area include  Ingólfstorg, Heiðmörk, Hjartatorg, and the Hafnarfjörður Christmas Village. They offer a cozy, cheerful atmosphere where you can find everything from uniq...

MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Dec 5th         Publish Date:  Dec 4th      Commercial: Henssler :15   From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.  Today is Tuesday, December 5th and Happy heavenly Birthday to Walt Disney. ***12.05.23 - BIRTHDAY - WALT DISNEY*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  Powder Springs celebrates the Christmas Spirit Arab-Israeli Group Calls for Peace in Marietta Talk Cobb Jail Detainee Dies from Apparent Aneurysm All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  BREAK: CU of GA  STORY 1: ‘It's just magical': Powder Springs celebrates the Christmas Spirit Santa Claus participated in Powder Springs' parade and tree-lighting celebration, bringing holiday cheer to the community. The parade featured various groups, dancers, and McEachern High School's marching band. Candy was distributed, and Santa rode in a vintage Chrysler, delighting the crowd. Mayor Al Thurman expressed pride in the community turnout and led the tree-lighting ceremony. Families enjoyed a holiday medley by Powder Springs Elementary Chorus and took pictures with Santa afterward. The event included a Christmas Village with food, giveaways, and entertainment by local organizations. The city's event coordinator, Michele Coursey, expressed joy at the community coming together. STORY 2: Arab-Israeli Group Calls for Peace in Marietta Talk The Sharaka group, meaning "partnership" in Arabic, is a multinational organization aiming to promote peace through diplomacy and collaboration among people of diverse nationalities and ideologies. It originated from the Abraham Accords, signed in 2020 between Israel and Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Morocco, with mediation by the U.S. under the Trump administration. The Accords aimed to normalize relations between Israel and the Arab countries. Sharaka advocates for the Accords, emphasizing their significance in transforming the Middle East landscape. The organization works towards fostering understanding and normalization between nations, despite challenges from radical groups, particularly those led by Iran, such as Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and militias in Iraq. Sharaka calls for unity among moderate nations to counter radicalism and promote peace in the region. The group emphasizes the human aspect of conflicts and the possibility of bridging divisions through relationships and understanding. STORY 3: Cobb Jail Detainee Dies From Apparent Aneurysm A 36-year-old detainee, Jose Roberto Razo, died from an apparent aneurysm at Cobb County jail. Razo was shot and arrested by Cobb Police in January after allegedly pointing a gun at officers. His cellmate discovered him unresponsive, triggering an emergency response. Medical personnel suspect an aneurysm as the cause of death, pending confirmation by the Cobb County Medical Examiner. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an external inquiry, with the sheriff's office also conducting an internal investigation. Razo's arrest earlier in the year involved an armed confrontation with police, and he had been the subject of 911 calls regarding his behavior. The facility includes the Bright Changes Clubhouse, an after-school program offering peer mentorship, social activities, and life skills development. The clinic also houses the Light Program, addressing the first episode of psychosis in individuals aged 16 to 30. Highland Rivers serves a crucial role in south Cobb, an area with high rates of uninsured individuals. The facility, costing $1,085,000 annually, received $750,000 from Cobb for renovations, addressing mental health and substance abuse needs for over 700 youth annually. STORY 5: Time is of the Essence for Lung Cancer: Wellstar Experts Wellstar Health System is urging individuals with a history of smoking, including those who quit 15 years ago or more, to undergo lung cancer screenings for early detection. Dr. Bill Mayfield, the medical director for lung cancer screening, emphasizes that early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment. The highest-risk individuals are those who smoked at least a pack a day for 20 years or more. Even after quitting, the risk persists due to lingering particles in the lungs. Wellstar Kennestone Hospital prioritizes swift treatment with STAT clinics, enhancing communication among specialists and ensuring a prompt diagnosis and treatment plan. Early detection and rapid treatment have proven life-saving, as exemplified by a 12-year lung cancer survivor's experience. We'll be back in a moment  Break: DRAKE – INGLES 8 STORY 6: New congressional map proposes major changes in Atlanta's northern suburbs The Georgia Senate's Republican majority has unveiled a new congressional map, addressing a federal judge's order to create an additional Black-majority district. The proposed map significantly alters the 6th Congressional District, currently GOP-controlled, to comply with the Voting Rights Act. The redrawn 6th District aims to have a Black-majority voting-age population, covering parts of Cobb and Fulton counties, along with Douglas and Fayette counties. Changes to the 7th District, currently represented by Democrat Lucy McBath, include removing it from Gwinnett County and incorporating predominantly white areas. The proposed map faces criticism from McBath's campaign, while other districts remain largely unchanged. STORY 7: East Cobb YMCA Kickers Bring Holiday Cheer The Freeman Poole Senior Center initiated the holiday season with the Snowflakes and Diamonds event, featuring festivities, food, and a performance by the East Cobb YMCA Kickers. The dance group, composed of women aged 60 and older, showcased "fun and festive dance numbers." Founded in 1992, the Kickers have been actively performing at various venues, including assisted living centers, rehabilitation centers, and health fairs. The group, known as Ambassadors of Fitness and Fun, dedicates numerous hours to practice, costume creation, and more than thirty annual shows, aiming to spread cheer and inspire seniors to stay active. Hello internet! This week's episode is all about the history and etiquette around the miniature CHRISTMAS VILLAGE or PUTZ! Enjoy and be sure to share with a friend!

The Deep Dive with Jessica St. Clair and June Diane Raphael

Jessica is solving issues left and right with her 'new nails' attitude, June wonders if she was ever an actual child, and the gals discuss the power of sharing stories. Then, Jessica recounts a Thanksgiving debacle (or miracle?), and we check in on our Christmas Spirit, which includes an important vibe check on Mr. Paul Scheer's Christmas Village.  Deep Divers remember, if you're in this for the joy you're also in this for the roots.Tickets to the Galentine's Day Picklball Tournament can purchased here: https://www.janeclub.com/pickleball Baby2Baby info here: Casey Wilson and Danielle Schneider will be shopping and wrapping these presents in person with 15 listeners on December 11th from 10am-2pm.
