It's a first today and that is my first medical student guest on the podcast!! A huge welcome to Omar Al-Rubaie, a third year medical student at the University Of Sheffield who is here to talk about The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. It's a first also because this is the first Douglas Adams I've ever read. I'd been aware of Hitchhiker's Guide for a very long time and I had never read it. I confess, I had never wanted to read it and as I was reading it in preparation for the podcast I was thinking "oh my goodness. What have I done". I will say I don't think I'm the target audience for the book and I didn't really get it. You may be relieved to discover that after a conversation with Omar I've started to see that there is so much more in the book than I was getting out of first reading. And I suppose that's one of those reasons why reading books and talking about them is so enormously valuable to get the most out of them. Will I be going on to read the sequel? Pretty unlikely! Did I really enjoy my conversation with Omar? Oh my goodness Yes!! Whether you are a fan of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, somebody who loathes the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or somebody who listens to the podcast and has absolutely no idea what we're talking about so far, I hope you're going to enjoy this conversation.

What does it mean to settle, to be in a settled place? This week's guest, AbdouMaliq Simone has dedicated his work to investigating the specifics of urban organization as they are created by people. In this erudite and globally-positioned conversation, Ayana and AbdouMaliq meditate on how the design of our environments shapes us. AbdouMaliq talks us through the uncertain, vulnerable, and dynamic positions in the choreography of global cities, and contemplates what it means to live an urban life. From the entanglements of resistance and protest, to surveillance and governance, to the effects of climate change on the city environment, AbdouMaliq brings nuance and depth to this vital conversation. As humanity shapes the city, it shapes us in turn, and as the world rapidly urbanizes, AbdouMaliq calls listeners to think about what an urban politics could be. AbdouMaliq Simone is Senior Professorial Fellow at the Urban Institute, University of Sheffield and co-director of the Beyond Inhabitation Lab, Polytechnic University ofTurin. https://beyondinhabitation.org/ Music by Jahawi. Astronomers have used a new camera called the HiPERCAM to analyse a type of small, dim star that has proved elusive to standard cameras. The camera has allowed them to make detailed measurements of this cool subdwarf star 1500 light years away, and it's the first time they've been able to confirm the predicted model of this type of star. Ruby Osborn spoke to Dr Steven Parsons from the University of Sheffield about what makes this star so interesting, and how the HiPERCAM has helped them to study it. Like this podcast?
