Next, we hear about Trump's unconstitutional actions infringing on our civil rights, from immigration to workplace policy, and how to fight back to protect our rights and our democracy. We also discuss how to take care of yourself in a tough and often toxic news environment. *Special guests include: Jacqueline Friedman, EducateUS, @educateusaction.bsky.social; Mike Zamore, ACLU, @ACLU, @aclu.org; Monifa Bandele, MomsRising, @MomsRising, @momsrising.bsky.social; Emily Martin, National Women's Law Center, @nwlc, @nwlc.org
The Supreme Court has turned back time in recent decisions by regressing to an interpretation of the Constitution according to its “original meaning.” What has this meant for women's rights? Listen in on a panel discussion with Madiba K. Dennie, author of the new book The Originalism Trap; Khiara M. Bridges of UC Berkeley School of Law; Emily Martin of the National Women's Law Center; and Alicia Bannon of the Brennan Center and State Court Report. They delve into recent cases that have reversed decades of progress for women's rights, such as the 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade, and United States v. Rahimi, which is built entirely around the fact that domestic violence was not a crime in the 18th century. RuPaul's Drag Race first aired on TV in 2009, but the New York City drag scene that launched RuPaul started over a century earlier. From drag balls to Wigstock, New York has long been considered the capital of drag culture. Joining me in this episode to discuss New York City's rich history of drag is writer Elyssa Maxx Goodman, author of Glitter and Concrete: A Cultural History of Drag in New York City. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The mid-episode music is “The New York Glide,” written by Tim Delaney and performed by Ethel Waters and Albury's Blue & Jazz Seven in May 1921; the performance is in the public domain. At Milford Christian Church, Pastor Jim Loomer likes to portray himself as “All Things to All Men,” as putting aside his own desires, comfort, and pride so that he can bring people to Jesus as envisioned in First Corinthians. In doing so, Jim portrays himself as an average Joe, a man of the people, a happy go lucky man of God. But underneath that mask lies a craven soul marked by a penchant for twisting God's words to serve his purposes, and using his church as a weapon to harm those who would expose him. Discover Jim's history as a young Christian new to the pulpit, and follow him as he branches out into the realms of education and politics, where his hypocrisy is on full display. Jim's sins were so blatant, in fact, that this episode had to be split in two, with the second half – containing a look at how Jim uses the church as not only a sword, but also as a shield to protect those who would hurt children like Doreen Vincent and Emily Martin – coming shortly. #pastorloomer #milfordchristian #allthingstoallmen #doreenvincent #justicefordori #emilymartin #justiceforemily

The former police officer, Wayne Couzens, who raped and murdered Sarah Everard two years ago, has admitted three counts of indecent exposure, one of which happened just four days before he kidnapped and killed Sarah Everard. Now academics and criminologists are calling for a change in the way indecent exposure is seen – saying we need to stop the perception of it as a so-called ‘nuisance offence' and take it more seriously, as in some cases it can lead to far more serious crimes. Nuala talks to BBC's Home Affairs correspondent, Dominic Casciani and Jennifer Grant from the University of Portsmouth. What are your thoughts on children's sleepovers? Are they a rite of passage or just a big headache? Well, #nosleepovers was trending on social media recently after an American influencer and mum of two, Tara Huck, shared her unpopular parenting opinion: she doesn't allow her children to attend sleepovers. When Netmums did a poll of their UK parents - 63% said they ban sleepovers. So is it the end for sleepovers? Victoria Richards is Editor of Indy Voices at the Independent and hosts multiple sleepovers a year, whereas parenting columnist for Velvet Magazine, Emily Martin, is trying to avoid them for as long as possible. A new Netflix series from Executive Producer Jada Pinkett-Smith is out today, telling the stories of African Queens. The first focuses on Queen Njinga, a powerful woman who led Ndongo – modern day Angola – through the slave trade and invasions by the Portuguese. To find out more about Njinga, and why it's so important to hear her story, Nuala McGovern is joined by one of the writers and former British High Commissioner to Mozambique, Nne Nne Iwuji-Eme. Scientists say that an on-demand, non-hormonal contraceptive pill for men may be a real possibility after successful trials stopped sperm from being able to swim. Tests in mice suggest that it stuns sperm long enough to stop them from reaching the egg. Further tests are needed, but if successful, it could provide a reliable oral contraception. Michelle Roberts is the BBC's Digital Health Editor. The republican Nikki Haley has announced that she will be running for president next year in the US. She's the first Republican to challenge Donald Trump for the party's presidential nomination. Nikki Haley first made her way onto the political scene back in 2010, when she became the youngest governor in the USA at the age of 39, securing a victory against an all-male field to become South Carolina's first female and Asian-American governor. Since then she has been hailed as a rising star who could potentially change the Republican party's male-dominated image. So what does this announcement mean for American Politics? Daniel Lippman is a reporter for Politico covering the White House in Washington.

We share all kinds of information about ourselves without anyone asking us to: posting photos on social media, arguing on Twitter, and even by buying tickets to travel internationally. How do scientists study this data? What are the psychological and anthropological ramifications of our love for “sharing”? And how do tech giants treat their own internal “scientists” and “scholars”?Our today's guest is Emily Martin, Professor Emerita of Anthropology at New York University. Emily is also a groundbreaking author, most recent of “Experiments of the Mind”, a book that offers an inside view of the experimental practices of cognitive psychology and how they can explain the allure of social media. We spoke with Emily about the addictive nature of social media, the ethics of scientific research, our self-presentation online versus offline, and much, much more. This show is created by Storm, a podcast production studio, and Anon, a creative anonymous conscious social network. Join author Emily Martin (Professor Emerita, Department of Anthropology, NYU), panelists Iretiolu Akinrinade (Research Analyst, Data & Society), and Noelle Stout (faculty member, Program in Advanced Teaching and Research, Apple University), and host Emanuel Moss (Join Postdoctoral Scholar, Data & Society, Cornell Tech) for a conversation around Experiments of the Mind: From the Cognitive Psychology Lab to the World of Facebook and Twitter. Experimental cognitive psychology research is a hidden force in our online lives. We engage with it, often unknowingly, whenever we download a health app, complete a Facebook quiz, or rate our latest purchase. How did experimental psychology come to play an outsized role in these developments? Experiments of the Mind considers this question through a look at cognitive psychology laboratories. Emily Martin traces how psychological research methods evolved, escaped the boundaries of the discipline, and infiltrated social media and our digital universe. Martin recounts her participation in psychology labs, and she conveys their activities through the voices of principal investigators, graduate students, and subjects. Despite claims of experimental psychology's focus on isolated individuals, Martin finds that the history of the field--from early German labs to Gestalt psychology--has led to research methods that are, in fact, highly social. She shows how these methods are deployed online: amplified by troves of data and powerful machine learning, an unprecedented model of human psychology is now widespread--one in which statistical measures are paired with algorithms to predict and influence users' behavior. Experiments of the Mind examines how psychology research has shaped us to be perfectly suited for our networked age.

(www.hrc.org)Seventeen percent of LGBTQ people polled lost their jobs because of COVID-19, compared to 13 percent of the general population, a survey found. (nbc news)From February 2020 to January 2022, male workers regained all jobs they had lost due to the public health crisis, according to an analysis by the National Women's Law Center of the latest U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report. However, 1.1 million women left the labor force during that span, accounting for 63 percent of all jobs lost. While women gained 188,000 jobs in January 2022, they are still short by more than 1.8 million jobs lost since February 2020. It would take women nearly 10 months of growth at January's level to regain the jobs they lost, the NWLC report indicated. "While men have recouped lost jobs, women are still in a big hole, and that shows how the pandemic impacts genders in different ways," said Emily Martin, vice president for education and workplace justice at NWLC. "Part of the reason for this is because women still hold the lion's share of caregiver responsibilities." Reviewers call Circe by Madeline Miller a feminist masterpiece about a woman trying to overcome the limitations imposed by a male dominated society. We love that. Circe is born of the god Helios and a naiad and is constantly belittled in her fathers house. She soon discovers that she has the power of transformation when she turns the mortal she loves into a god and the nymph he loves into a six-headed monster. After committing these atrocities against the gods, Zeus banishes her to an island for the rest of her life (she's immortal, by the way). Over time, she encounters many famous mythological beings, like the Minotaur, Daedalus and his son Icarus, Medea, and Odysseus. How does this portrayal of Circe compare to her portrayal in The Odyssey by Homer? What makes this story feminist? How did her various romances affect and change her? Join us as we discuss these questions and more in episode four of our spoiler-filled podcast. Trigger Warnings: Rape, abuse, arranged marriage, suicidal ideation, childbirth with complications, death, and bestiality.Questions: The questions discussed in this episode were written by Emily Martin.
