In this episode of Confessions of a Higher Ed CMO, Jaime Hunt sits down with Eric Hollenbeck from Washington State University's Carson College of Business to unpack the findings of the 2024 Ethical Marketing Survey. This groundbreaking research highlights public perceptions of ethical practices in marketing, including AI usage, misinformation, and the need for transparency. Together, they discuss actionable strategies for higher education marketers to build trust, address generational differences, and navigate the evolving ethical landscape of marketing in the AI era.Key TakeawaysTransparency is Key: 76% of survey respondents believe organizations should disclose AI usage in marketing. Higher ed institutions should develop clear policies and openly communicate AI's role in their processes.Generational Differences in AI Comfort: Millennials are more comfortable with AI due to its integration into their daily lives. Tailoring messaging about AI benefits based on generational values can improve trust.Ethical Marketing Drives Long-Term Success: Public sentiment favors transparency and ethical practices, making them essential for institutions aiming to build lasting credibility.Media Literacy is a Higher Ed Responsibility: With only 57% of survey respondents confident in identifying misinformation, higher ed institutions have a pivotal role in fostering media literacy among students and the public.Policy Development Matters: Institutions should establish, review, and communicate policies on ethical marketing and AI use to ensure trust and accountability.Episode SummaryWhat is the 2024 Ethical Marketing Survey? Eric Hollenbeck describes the 2024 Ethical Marketing Survey, which surveyed 1,000 Americans to gauge public opinions on AI, misinformation, influencer marketing, and brand ethics. The survey offers key insights into public expectations, revealing that transparency and honesty are critical for maintaining consumer trust. How Should Higher Ed Marketers Approach AI Transparency? One of the standout findings was that 76% of respondents believe organizations should disclose their use of AI in marketing. Eric suggests that higher ed marketers should proactively communicate their AI use, especially for tools like chatbots or AI-generated content. He emphasizes that transparency builds credibility and aligns with the public's call for openness.Jaime and Eric also explore the nuanced question of what AI usage warrants disclosure. They agree that while everyday uses like brainstorming might not require transparency, AI-generated visuals or personalized student experiences should be openly communicated. This distinction ensures ethical practices without overwhelming audiences with unnecessary details. How Can Higher Ed Tailor Messaging Across Generations? The survey highlighted generational differences, with millennials showing greater comfort with AI. Eric notes that marketers should focus on the benefits of AI technologies when crafting messages for each generation. For younger audiences, emphasize how AI improves convenience and responsiveness. For older generations, stress accuracy and reduced human error. This approach ensures messaging resonates with diverse audience segments. What Role Should Higher Ed Play in Media Literacy? Eric shares insights from Washington State University's programs that integrate media literacy education into their curriculum. For example, the WSU Skills and Knowledge Accelerator teaches graduate students marketing and media ethics. Interdisciplinary collaboration across departments amplifies these efforts, helping students and the public navigate misinformation and develop critical thinking skills.Jaime and Eric stress that fostering media literacy isn't just an institutional responsibility—it's essential for preparing students to thrive in an increasingly complex digital world. What Ethical Practices Should Higher Ed Marketers Prioritize? Eric provides several recommendations for marketers to uphold ethical standards:Engage in Transparent Conversations: Clearly disclose AI use in marketing campaigns and communications.Focus on Authentic Storytelling: Highlight genuine student and institutional stories to build trust.Develop and Review Policies: Regularly revisit policies on data privacy, AI use, and ethical marketing to stay aligned with public expectations.Champion Media Literacy: Partner with faculty and academic units to educate students and the public on identifying misinformation.Jaime echoes these points, emphasizing that empathy-driven marketing is key to aligning with audience needs and building lasting trust. - - - -Connect With Our Host:Jaime Hunthttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jaimehunt/https://twitter.com/JaimeHuntIMCAbout The Enrollify Podcast Network:Confessions of a Higher Ed CMO is a part of the Enrollify Podcast Network. Ben Chapman is the General Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer at Swoop. Prior to Swoop, Ben was the Deputy General Counsel for Real Chemistry. He has nearly 10 years of experience in ad tech, data, and privacy matters. In this episode… Companies that operate in the healthcare marketing space, like Swoop, approach privacy by emphasizing transparency, ethical practices, and building trusted partnerships. To remain compliant, businesses need to thoroughly understand their data handling processes and regularly assess their partners. By asking detailed, factual questions, companies can make informed decisions about their partners' practices and ultimately strengthen their privacy programs. Additionally, adopting a consumer- or patient-centric perspective helps businesses navigate the complexities of privacy laws while aligning with regulatory requirements and ethical standards. A proactive and well-informed approach to privacy strengthens compliance efforts and builds trust. Healthcare marketing faces new challenges as privacy laws evolve and health data definitions expand. Laws like the Washington My Health My Data Act broaden the scope of what constitutes health data, requiring organizations to reevaluate how they handle consumer data. Navigating this complex regulatory landscape requires companies to ensure compliance with state privacy laws and federal regulations like HIPAA, all while maintaining trust and transparency with consumers. How can companies ensure ethical and privacy-friendly marketing practices? In this episode of She Said Privacy/He Said Security, Jodi and Justin Daniels speak with Ben Chapman, General Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer at Swoop, about the intersection of privacy and healthcare marketing. They discuss how state privacy laws redefine health data, the importance of ethical data practices, and strategies for evaluating partners. Ben shares his insights on building privacy programs, fostering collaboration, and navigating the nuances of healthcare marketing in a highly regulated environment. He also highlights the importance of continuous learning and collaboration within the privacy community to stay ahead in the ever-changing regulatory environment.

Liz debunks this myth and explains how marketing can actually be an extension of your purpose, rather than a compromise of your ethics. Liz emphasizes that marketing isn't about being salesy or pushy; it's about creating awareness and making it easy for people who need your help to find you. She introduces the concept of ethical marketing and how it can serve your community by inviting people to access the support they're seeking. She also shares her “Invitation to Launch” method, reframing marketing as an opportunity to host a welcoming space, like a party, for those who need your services. In this episode of the Post Status Happiness Hour, host Michelle Frechette interviews Alex Sandiford about his affiliate plugin, Siren Affiliates. Alex explains how the plugin simplifies the management of affiliate, loyalty, and royalty programs by centralizing various incentive structures. He discusses the development journey, challenges faced, and future plans for the plugin, including potential integrations. The conversation emphasizes the importance of building relationships with affiliates and providing them with the necessary tools and support to succeed. The episode concludes with insights into the ethical and collaborative aspects of affiliate marketing.Top Takeaways:The Power of Affiliate Relationships: Alex emphasizes that successful affiliate programs are built on strong partnerships and personalized support. Providing affiliates with both the right tools and fair compensation can lead to mutually beneficial success. It's not just about the percentage they earn, but about helping them market effectively.Siren's Pricing Structure: Alex outlines Siren's pricing tiers as very affordable, with a focus on bringing in early adopters. The initial pricing is $59 for the first year, renewing at $79. This pricing will likely increase as the plugin stabilizes and grows.Challenges in Affiliate Marketing Perception: Alex is focused on shifting the negative stigma around affiliate marketing by showing that it can be honest, impactful, and built on genuine partnerships. He contrasts the negative view of affiliates with the popular trend of influencer marketing, highlighting their similarities.Platform Migration and Customization: Siren offers platform migration support for users switching from other affiliate plugins like Affiliate WP. This feature has proven popular, and Alex plans to streamline the migration process to make it more efficient, showing a focus on enhancing user experience and meeting customer needs.Future Development Plans: While Siren does not yet have built-in tools for providing affiliates with marketing resources like images and copy, this is on Alex's roadmap. He recognizes the importance of giving affiliates the resources they need to succeed, although existing tools like Google Drive and the block editor can partially solve this for now.Mentioned In The Show:LifterLMSUdemyPayPalStripeKadenceAffiliate WPWooCommerceEasy Digital DownloadsLearnDashNorth CommercePersonalized WPRestrict Content ProGoogle DrivePartnerShip PodcastWP WorldMarcus BurnetteWordCampUS

Today, I interview Julia Stege, who struggled to find her footing amidst doubts about her artistic abilities and societal expectations. Growing up in a family where creativity was both encouraged and stifled, Julia found herself navigating conflicting messages about her abilities. Despite doubts about her artistic prowess and pressures to conform, Julia pursued her passion for graphic design. As Julia ventured into the world of design, she encountered further obstacles. Traditional marketing methods felt inauthentic to her, prompting a deep soul-searching journey. Rejecting the dishonest tactics prevalent in mainstream marketing, Julia decided to forge her own path. Her commitment to authenticity led her to establish the New Renaissance Business School, a platform dedicated to empowering spiritual entrepreneurs to embrace their multi-passionate nature and build businesses aligned with their values.Through her teachings, Julia emphasizes the importance of listening to one's inner voice and staying true to oneself. Her message resonates deeply in a world where conformity often prevails. In Julia's story, we find inspiration to embrace our uniqueness and make a positive impact with our voices, despite the challenges we may face along the way.__________________Julia Stege, known as The Magical Marketer, specializes in assisting spiritual business women and conscious entrepreneurs in clarifying and expressing their purpose through branding and marketing strategies that enchantingly attract their ideal customers online. She is the mastermind behind the Branding from the Heart™ System and the acclaimed author of "Branding from the Heart: How to Share Your Purpose through Marketing that Attracts Your Tribe and Inspires a Revolution." Julia's expertise as an award-winning branding artist and writer has earned her collaborations with prestigious clients such as NYC MOMA, Carnegie Hall, the U.S. Postal Service, Birkenstock Shoes, OWN Network Show Host Iyanla Vanzant, and the renowned Restaurant Franchise Cafe Gratitude.__________________Find Julia here:https://magical-marketing.com/https://www.facebook.com/JuliaDrosteStegeArtistSupport the showI'm Dr. Doreen Downing and I help people find their voice so they can speak without fear. Is marketing unethical? What about tactics like scarcity or significance? Should copywriters be using these persuasive elements in their copy? If not, why not? And when is it acceptable? Our guests for the 385th episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast are Maggie Patterson and Michelle Mazur, hosts of their own podcast called Duped where they talk about the misuse of persuasion in marketing. Between the four of us, we figured out the answers to these questions and more (almost). Click the play button below, or scroll down for a full transcript. Stuff to check out: The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground Duped Podcast Full Transcript: Rob Marsh: At some point in your writing career, most copywriters bump up against a persuasion tactic that just feels off. Or worse, they're asked to do something they don't feel good about. Maybe it's as simple as adding a deadline timer to an offer with no real deadline. Or it might be something worse… like selling programs to people who can't afford them, or who will never get the promised results. Hi, I'm Rob Marsh, one of the founders of The Copywriter Club. And on today's episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, Kira Hug and I had a chance to speak with the dynamic duo behind the Duped Podcast, Maggie Patterson and Michelle Mazur. We talked about those dubious marketing tactics, when it's okay to use them, and when you need to be the adult in the room who says, this is going to far. If you've ever wondered where the line is when it comes to marketing ethics, this episode will give you something to think about. But first, I want to tell you abou The Copywriter Underground. You've heard about the library of training that will help you build a profitable business. You've heard about the monthly coaching, and the almost weekly copy critiques and the helpful group of members ready with support and even the occasional lead. Last week we recorded an exclusive training for Underground members on the diagnostic scorecard that helps you close just about any prospect or project on a sales call. It's the kind of business secret you don't read about in free facebook groups or even on most email lists. But right now, you can watch that training and get the diagnostic scorecard to help you close more projects when you go to thecopywriterclub.com/tcu and join as a member.  But hurry, that training disappears in a few days. Now, let's hear what Michelle and Maggie had to say… Kira Hug: All right, welcome, Michelle, Maggie. So good to have both of you here. Let's kick off with the catalyst. What was the catalyst for Duped and that partnership between the two of you? Michelle Mazur: Well, I believe it started with me. Maggie and I vox a lot about things we're seeing and chatting about it. I sent her a Voxer message and said, hey, I think we should do a limited series podcast episode where we dive into some of these topics. And that was the catalyst. We were already creating the content in our Voxer conversations. And we're like, well, what if we just open that up to a wider audience? And we intended just to do, I think, eight episodes and maybe a second season. And then we realized, oh, wow, we have a lot to talk about here. Rob Marsh: So for anybody who's not already heard duped or aware of duped or even met you, Maggie and Michelle, tell us a little bit about, let's just lay that groundwork. What is Duped and why should people be listening to it? Maggie Patterson: So Duped is a consumer advocacy podcast that is really designed to help consumers in the online business space make more critical, nuanced decisions. Because what we tend to see is a lot of stories of, I bought XYZ, or I signed up with this coach, and I had a really negative experience. And from my perspective as a business owner, there's two ways we can approach this. We can try to get every business owner to reform their practices, which we're never all going to agree.
