The Neurodivergent Woman

Hey everyone, just a heads up that in this episode Jessica mentions times in her life when she was suicidal. If this brings up anything for you, please reach out to someone you trust, or contact one of the support lines we’ve included in the show notes. Take care of yourselves, and feel free to pause or skip this one if you need to. This week we are chatting to Jessica Horner about neurodivergent stories. Jessica is a proudly AuDHD and disabled woman and she works as a policy advisor with People With Disability Australia. She has previously worked as a journalist at the ABC, where she focused on the experiences of late diagnosed Autistic adults across Australia and wrote, among other pieces, a long form feature article called “A Rich New Lens”. She would later be nominated as a finalist for this article, alongside her producer, for the Media Diversity Australia Award, issued by the Walkley Foundation in 2023. She has also written for ABC Everyday, ABC News, Reframing Autism, Yooralla, and others. In this episode we deep dive into how neurodivergent stories are told, by whom, and for what purpose, and unpack to impact of this on the neurodivergent community. We cover: How Jessica thinks about neurodivergence. Jessica’s experience of her neurodivergence, and how this evolved over time along with her sense of self and identity. What are stories, why do we tell stories, and why are stories important? How power dynamics become embedded in cultural stories and ways we can work to shift this. Unpacking how neurodivergent stories are told. What does trauma-informed journalism and storytelling look like? Jessica’s current hyperfixations and a personal story on how Autism can show up for her. You can find Jessica through her website, Spoonfuls of Whimsy, or on Instagram and Facebook @spoonfuls_of_whimsy Looking for mental health support? It's like the New Forest only newer, as well as more sudden and completely worldwide. But is it here for revenge, or to provide us with some much-needed help? Let's find out as Mathew Hounsell and Kevin Burnard join us to discuss In the Forest of the Night. Notes and links Here's an article on William Blake's ‘The Tyger', from which this episode gets its name (and its tiger, I guess). Delightfully, as well as providing a short analysis of the poem, it reproduces Blake's full version of the poem in its original form as a text on a watercolour painting. Bubble Shock is the extremely unhealthy soft drink created and marketed by the alien Bane in the first story of the first season of The Sarah Jane Adventures. The Gaia Hypothesis proposes that living organisms and the environment in which they evolved form a complex, self-regulating system that keeps the Earth habitable. It was developed in the 1970s and has generally recieved a fair degree of criticism ever since. This episode was recorded well before New York's recent air-quality problems; New South Wales experienced its own version of this in the summer of 2019/2020, just before the pandemic hit. 119. Conversations with Coal Miners about Climate Change: Kim Paul Nguyen on his ‘must-watch' film

Kim Paul Nguyen is a multimedia journalist and filmmaker. He recently produced a documentary film called ‘Conversations with Coal Miners about Climate Change', funded by the Walkley Foundation and distributed by VICE. And what a film. Damon Gameau, the award-winning filmmaker of 2040, That Sugar Film, and most recently Regenerating Australia, calls it a ‘must-watch'. In many ways, there is no more important a story. And Kim navigates it beautifully. Though not without hitting up against the challenges that make this work so vital. Out of the story's dramatic and moving turns so much is revealed, including how coal miners, and the rest of us, are too often used as political pawns. And how we can get out of that trap, to have a chance at achieving more of the bigger picture outcomes just about all of us want. Kim's is a heck of a life story to date, and this provides the backdrop to the film. As a young person deeply concerned about climate change, he became a committed activist. In 2009 he cycled from Australia to Denmark to promote action on climate change, and was nominated for Young Australian of the Year. But it started to dawn on him that what he was doing wasn't working. It wasn't changing things the way he'd hoped. So he headed north, camera in hand, to dig deeper into what might. Kim has also written for The Guardian, Al Jazeera, VICE and the Big Issue. This conversation was recorded online with Kim at home in Sydney, on 11 May 2022. The Walkley Foundation and Scanlon Foundation present - Media training: Inclusive reporting that represents Australia's diversity Session 4: Diversity and ethics This is the fourth and final session in a series of professional development webinars for Australian journalists to bring greater diversity and inclusion to their reporting, presented by the Walkley Foundation and the Scanlon Foundation. #4 focuses on diversity and ethics, with a conversation between Dr Hass Dellal AO, Russell Anderson and Juan Paolo Legaspi. Over the past decades, Australia's diversity has increased considerably as has Australia's pride in being a multicultural society. Similarly, over this time, our understanding of how to welcome diversity has progressed. We now have over 270 ethnic groups living in Australia, consequently our diversity is a strength to embrace and integrate into our thinking. With all the best will in the world, this integration creates ethical challenges. Whether this relates to the words that we use to describe cohorts of people, an understanding of cultural appropriation, representations through images or music or the risks of gross generalisations, we can't afford to take decades to get this right. Hass Dellal has worked with multiple Federal and State governments throughout this time and has watched Australia's progress in representation. Russell Anderson is the CEO at the National Ethnic and Multicultural Broadcaster's Council (NEMBC), advocating for multiculturalism and media diversity. Juan Paolo Legaspi is Vice President of the National Ethnic and Multicultural Broadcasters' Council (NEMBC). He works with community groups, government and non-government organisations to promote multiculturalism in the Australian media landscape. Join them for a discussion about the role of the media, ethics and diversity moderated by CEO of the Scanlon Foundation, Anthea Hancocks.

This session focuses on engaging with communities, with a conversation between Julie Szego and Jieh-Yung Lo. In this session we explore how media reporting and storytelling can encompass cultural nuance and the authentic representation of Australia's cultural diversity. This is increasingly important, as evident by the challenges faced by Chinese-Australians (and, to an extent, Asian-Australians) in the context of Australia's bilateral relationship with China and the COVID-19 pandemic. Julie Szego, in conjunction with advice from Jieh-Yung, recently wrote an extended essay focusing on the experience of the Chinese diaspora living in suburban Melbourne. Cultural storytelling by those from outside the community requires an awareness of one's own cultural evolution and how that informs our views and interpretations. Hosting the webinar and moderating the Q&A will be Media Diversity Australia representative and media, communications and advocacy professional, Akashika Mohla.

The Walkley Foundation and Scanlon Foundation present - Media training: Inclusive reporting that represents Australia's diversity. Session 1: The language of storytelling This is the first in a series of professional development webinars for Australian journalists to bring greater diversity and inclusion to their reporting, presented by the Walkley Foundation and the Scanlon Foundation. This first session focuses on the language of storytelling, hosted by Walkley-winning feature writer James Button and featuring community and youth worker Nor Shanino. Storytelling is about listening and then getting out of the way so that the personalities and experiences can be heard. In this session, we'll delve into the relationship between storyteller and source from both sides. James Button will share his approach and how humility is essential in allowing individuals to trust the storyteller. In 2020, James and Julie Szego participated in a Zoom roundtable with a diverse group of young people who grew up in the Flemington/Kensington Housing Commission Flats. Nor Shanino was a participant in the roundtable and has experienced multiple approaches by media representatives. He will share his thoughts on the keys to authenticity in reporting. The openness and willingness of the young people resulted in a publication that told the range of stories authentically. The initial roundtable was followed by individual interviews which were only possible through an acknowledgement of the value of their opinions. This isn't always possible for news items but the investment in storytelling pays dividends when news needs to be told. Hosted by Antoinette Lattouf from Media Diversity Australia.

My advice is to stick with it as the picture of this new concept in news publishing takes shape during the conversation. What I will tell you here is that PS Media involves co-ownership by the community, is based on Local Government Areas (LGAs), and wants to be very different from traditional models where reporters and editors dictate the news agenda. This startup is taking shape at a critical time for local media, with lockdowns hitting advertising revenues even harder than last year in many areas. A straight up-and-down journalist is how Marina Go describes herself prior to her foray into the boardroom. From her days as Editor for Dolly, Elle, Australian Good Taste, and Sunday Life, and then General Manager of Bauer/Hearst brand's: Harper's Bazaar, Elle, and Cosmopolitan, her path to the boardroom hasn't been as bizarre as you may think. Journalists ask questions, but what they're particularly skilled at is listening.  And that is the makings of an effective director, Marina explains. Marina's first board role was at Netball Australia, which she obtained via WOB. Today she has a full-time portfolio career, comprising Non Executive Director (NED) Autosports Group (ASX:ASG); Energy Australia; 7-eleven; Pro-PAC (ASX:PPG); and The Walkley Foundation, and Chair at Ovarian Cancer Australia; and Suncorp Super Netball Commission. She has spent the past 30 years creating and building commercially successful brands that connect deeply with consumer groups across digital and print channels. Her focus is on reputational risk and digital innovation, but it is her passion for gender equality and balance that is becoming her legacy. In spite of the challenges presented by traditional notions of male leadership, stereotypes and gender barriers, she has succeeded as Netball Australia's first independent NED and Chair of the West Tigers NRL, which saw her nominated as the Australian Financial Review Boss True Leader in 2016. 'In Conversation with Claire', Marina confides that her most rewarding career move was launching Women's Agenda, an independent female owned and run online publication, and the Women's Agenda Leadership Awards. At the turn of the century when most publications only featured women if they were a celebrity or a victim, Women's Agenda “created a stink” by showcasing talented women from every sector and known background in business and leadership. It caused a ripple effect across mainstream media and put women on the radar. At the close of the hardest year for many, Marina shares the emotional toll COVID-19 has had on the mental wellbeing of staff across the organisations she boards. Marina Go Independent Chair, Non-Executive Director, Remuneration Committee Chair, Editor, General Manager Current Boards (November 2020) NED, Autosports Group (ASX:ASG) NED, Energy Australia NED, 7-eleven NED, Pro-PAC (ASX:PPG) NED, The Walkley Foundation Chair, Ovarian Cancer Australia Chair, Suncorp Super Netball Commission LinkedIn   Marina Go Claire Braund (host) Further Information about Women on Boards (WOB) membership, events & services, please visit our website to receive our weekly newsletter, subscribe as a Basic Member (free). New Caledonia – towards a new Pacific nation?

On 4 October, New Caledonians will vote in a referendum on their political future. Long term residents of the French Pacific dependency – one of Australia’s closest neighbours – will vote yes or no on independence from France. Most indigenous Kanak support the call for independence and sovereignty, but must gain support from non-Kanak communities who want to retain ties to the French Republic. A previous referendum in 2018 saw 43 per cent support for independence, and since then, debate has polarised over New Caledonia’s future political status. But the 2020 referendum comes at a time of significant economic and social challenge, during the global pandemic. New Caledonia faces changing demand for nickel exports, the loss of international tourism and a rising cost of living for the vulnerable. Hear from leading political and community leaders, to discuss the referendum and future prospects for this Pacific nation. Facilitated by journalist Nic Maclellan, the discussion will be broadcast in English, providing first-hand perspectives on current developments that are largely missing from regional media. Confirmed speakers include: Patricia Goa is an elected member of New Caledonia’s Congress, representing the pro-independence Union Nationale Pour l'Indépendance (UNI). She lives in Baco tribe in New Caledonia’s Northern Province and works as an adviser to provincial president Paul Neaoutyine. Charles Wea was born in Ouvea in the Loyalty Islands. He completed university degrees in Samoa and Australia, and has served as the FLNKS representative to Australia and at meetings of the Melanesian Spearhead Group. Magalie Tingal is a former journalist and serves in the New Caledonia’s Northern Provincial Assembly. As a member of the Union Calédonienne party, she is a co-ordinator of the Yes campaign for the independence movement Front de Libération Nationale Kanak et Socialiste (FLNKS). Facilitator: Nic Maclellan is a correspondent for Islands Business magazine and other Pacific media. A regular visitor to New Caledonia, he reports regularly on France and the Pacific islands and is co-author of La France dans le Pacifique – de Bougainville à Moruroa (Editions La Découverte) and After Moruroa – France in the South Pacific (Ocean Press). He was recently awarded the 2020 Sean Dorney Grant for Pacific Journalism by the Walkley Foundation.

As a teenage girl in the ‘90s, reading Dolly magazine every month was a special thrill – one that my guest for this episode knows well. As a teenager Marino Go set her sights on becoming the editor of Dolly magazine, a goal she achieved at the age of 23. Of course, achieving your ultimate goal so early in your career prompts the question, what’s next? Marina went on launch Australian Good Taste magazine for Woolworths before moving into the business strategy side of the media industry, with roles including CEO of Private Media, Publisher of Magazines at Fairfax, and Group Publisher at Pacific Publications. For the past decade Marina has focused her career at the board level, including five years under the spotlight as chairwoman of the NRL’s Wests Tigers. She is currently a non-executive director for Energy Australia, 7-Eleven, Pro-PAC, Autosports Group and the Walkley Foundation, as well as chair for Ovarian Cancer Australia and the Super Netball Commission. In 2016 Marina published her book Break Through: 20 Success Strategies for Female Leaders, and she is a role model and mentor to countless women in business and the media. Having looked up to Marina since those early Dolly days, in 2012 armed with a ‘I have nothing to lose, and everything to gain’ attitude, I contacted Marina and asked to meet her for coffee. That led to a work opportunity that helped form the early days of The PR Hub. I continue to be inspired by her career trajectory and her focus on supporting and empowering women. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this episode as much as I did! Marina’s Five in Five shout-out: Marina loves purpose-driven businesses like Who Gives a Crap and Thank You. With a bonus shout-out to her son’s band, The Tints!
