In my ‘day job', when I speak with entrepreneurs and ask them what their single biggest financial concern is once they sold their business and received a capital sum, the answer is often ‘I don't want to lose it - I don't want to mess this up!' So I started this podcast as a resource for founders and business owners - those who've taken the leap, created a business and are now in the process of growing it or possibly already sold and exited.Anyone who's started a business knows how difficult it can be, and if you manage to navigate the inevitable rollercoaster ride that being an entrepreneur involves and created some economic success, the last thing you want to do is be exposed to unnecessary risks. That's why I was delighted to invite Dave Butler to share his wisdom with our community.Dave is the CEO of what I've often called The Best Kept Secret in Investment - Dimensional Fund Advisors and is one of the smartest people in finance.I've had the pleasure of meeting him several times and I can tell you that he's a deeply thoughtful guy, super high integrity and incredibly passionate about helping investors succeed.During our conversation he explained his journey from playing pro basketball through his early days on Wall Street and now leading Dimensional - and the lessons he's learned along the way, such as:Why business owners with money to invest should be wary of hiring a specific type of fund manager or wealth adviser. The three essential areas you must focus on to maximise your chances of long-term investment success. His checklist of essential attributes to look for if you plan to hire a wealth adviser or money manager.Towards the end, after over 30 years in the money management business, and now running a company that manages hundreds of billions of dollars, his personal definition of True Wealth is just brilliant.Packed full of stories, anecdotes and words of wisdom, you're going to enjoy this conversation - ladies and gentlemen I gave you Mr Dave Butler.Links:Dimensional InvestingTrillions: How a Band of Wall Street Renegades Invented the Index Fund and Changed Finance Foreverwww.capital.co.ukThis podcast is produced by GR Media Sponsored by Capital Asset Management

If you've listened to the show for more than a couple episodes then you know that we're big fans of index funds. Specifically, low-cost widely diversified index funds are what the vast majority of our portfolios consist of. But how did index funds come to be? And sure, we're all for them but what does everyone else say? That's why we're pumped to take a deep dive into index funds today with Robin Wigglesworth who is editor of Alphaville over at the Financial Times. Robin is a financial journalist and he's also the author of the book “Trillions: How a Band of Wall Street Renegades Invented the Index Fund and Changed Finance Forever.” Passive investing is something we take for granted- for us, index funds have always been an option but that wasn't always the case. It was a heretical idea in the past, so we're excited to get into the history of one of the most important modern-day investing innovations: who was responsible for their creation, why hedge funds still exist if index funds are the path to wealth, potential downsides to passive investing, & much more! Robin Wigglesworth has done the impossible...he's written a book about index funds that, once you get started, you won't be able to put down. The index fund product itself may not be compelling, but the characters that Wigglesworth describes certainly are. He traces the growth of index funds and how they moved from a concept developed by academics to how they became the leading investment choice for mutual fund investors. Enjoy!
Michael Green, Michael Green, Chief Strategist at Simplify Asset Management joins Pierre Daillie and Adam Butler for a revealing conversation about his thesis that stock markets are less efficient and more 'inelastic' because of the proliferation of passive index investing over the last few decades, and what that means. His thesis and research, now corroborated and examined by academic studies, labelling it as the 'Inelastic Market Hypothesis,' by Xavier Gabaix and Ralph Koijen, Jean-Philippe Bouchaud, and Valentin Haddad, shine a bright new light on how and why markets are displaying increasingly violent and rapid bouts of volatility, that may intensify over the coming years and decades.Research mentioned in the conversation:In Search of the Origins of Financial Fluctuations: The Inelastic Markets Hypothesis (Gabaix and Koijen)The Inelastic Market Hypothesis: A Microstructural Interpretation (JP Bouchaud)How Competitive is the Stock Market? Never have so many individuals been actively engaged in trading in the equity markets. Robin Hood, Reddit, meme stocks, crypto, blockchain are the language of a whole new world of mostly young traders. And most of them will lose money. They think they can outperform markets that have long humbled the smartest guys in the room. So back in the early seventy, a group of those guys got together to imagine and evolve a way to passively participate in the markets. Long before information about the markets had been democratized. Long before we checked our portfolio every-time we checked our phone, the idea of passive index funds would take hold. And even in our hyperbolic financial world today, they are still going strong. In fact, they are so powerful, they alone can move markets. What this all means for markets and economics is worth examining. To do so I'm joined by Robin Wigglesworth, the global finance correspondent at the Financial Times and the author of Trillions: How a Band of Wall Street Renegades Invented the Index Fund and Changed Finance Forever My conversation with Robin Wigglesworth:
