As a high achiever, it is good to strive for success and have high expectations. These high standards keep you going, striving to be your best. When you strive to be your best, you help others around you do the same. But perfection is unattainable. Instead, consider striving for excellence instead and Dr. Cindra shares with us how to do just that. Power Phrase this Week: “I am kind to myself when things don't go perfectly moving on quickly to protect my confidence.” Quote of the Week: “At the root of perfectionism isn't really about a deep love for being meticulous. It's about fear. Fear of making a mistake. Fear of disappointing others. Fear of failure.” - Michael Law

Summary Seth Abramovitch (Twitter; LinkedIn) joins Andrew (Twitter; LinkedIn) to discuss the British war-hero who spied on behalf of the Japanese during Hollywood's Golden Age. This is a story-and-a-half, by jingo! What You'll Learn Intelligence How a British war-hero became a spy for the other side Japanese espionage in Tinseltown How the story involves Boris Karloff, Charlie Chaplin and Yoko Ono's father The spy ring's activities before and after Pearl Harbor Reflections Playing the game for yourself vs. for a country or a cause Hubris & Nemesis And much, much more… Episode Notes Squadron Leader Frederick Rutland, AM, DSC and Bar, was the first person to fly a seaplane from a ship in history. He was also the first man to spot the German fleet from his seaplane, thereby precipitating the largest naval battle of the First World War, the Battle of Jutland. After leaving the military because of indiscretions with a fellow officer's wife, Rutland tries to live an ordinary vanilla life, but still craves his action-packed days of old…ultimately, he is approached by the Japanese to teach aviation and to spy on their behalf, which leads him to relocate to LA during the Golden Age of Hollywood. To discuss this doozy of a story, I am joined by Seth Abramovitch from the Hollywood Reporter – i.e., the definitive interpretive voice of the entertainment industry – where he has worked for ten years. And… There are some incredible Hollywood movies from the interwar period, capturing some of the tension and suspicion of the era, as well as the faint drumbeat of approaching war. Hitchcock alone had, The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), The 39 Steps (1935), Sabotage (1936), and Foreign Correspondent (1940). Major stars of the era such as Marlene Dietrich, Great Garbo, and Madelaine Carroll helped solidify the spy genre with movies such as Dishonored (1931), Mata Hari (1931), and I Was a Spy (1933). Don't forget Fritz Lang's Spione (1928), which has been called a, “marvel of narrative economy in montage.” Quote of the Week "At the very bottom of the list, it would be any kind of allegiance to any flag, because he's quick to offer to turn on Japan when push comes to shove at the very end of the whole story. I don't think he was doing it for any kind of nationalism or political, viewpoint. I think if anything he was apolitical." – Seth Abramovitch. Summary Lis Wiehl (Twitter, Website) joins Andrew (Twitter; LinkedIn) to discuss the FBI Agent Robert Hanssen. His espionage for the Russians was described as the “worst intelligence disaster in U.S. history.” What You'll Learn Intelligence The many contradictions of this fragmented personality The criminal sworn FBI Agent The sexual fetishist in Opus Dei The anti-communist Soviet spy Hanssen's impact on the FBI and American Intelligence How the Hanssen case effected the FBI-CIA relationship Reflections Technology's impact on the espionage/counterespionage cat-and-mouse game Cultural and institutional blind spots And much, much more… Episode Notes The International Spy Museum has the handcuffs that were put on one of the most notorious spies in American history, former FBI Agent Robert Hanssen. But what was the backstory of the moment those metal restraints closed around his wrists in Foxstone Park, Virginia? What did he do? Why did he do it? Who was this man? What damage did he do? To discuss these questions, Andrew sat down with the author of A Spy in Plain Sight, Lis Wiehl. Lis is a former Federal Prosecutor and a legal analyst and reporter on major news networks, including a 15-year stint at Fox News. She is the best-selling author of 20 fiction and non-fiction books and last but not least she is the daughter of an FBI Agent who heard stories of Hanssen's betrayal from her father. Hanssen betrayed “jewel in the crown of American intelligence, Dimitri Polyakov, and other U.S. assets, as well as handing over thousands of pages of highly classified information to the Soviet Union and later Russia. And… In the intelligence community compartmentalization is a way to try to protect sensitive information, caveats, codewords, clearances, read ins, need to know, etc., but in the personal context it refers to being capable of being a “different person in terms of outlook, values and behavior at different times and circumstances.” David Charney met with Hanssen for an entire year after his arrest and described him as “the most compartmentalized person I have ever met.” He also mentions that he is a very experienced psychiatrist. Charney says in terms of compartmentalization most of us are a 1-2 on a scale of 10. Guess where Hanssen was? Quote of the Week "At one point hacked into one of his colleagues' computers to get more information, he was found out and his excuse was, I was just trying to show you how easily we're hacked into so that we can make sure that we don't, and they believed him because he was a computer guy…they just believed him when he hacked in this other person's computer. It is axiomatic, within that tradition, that man and woman alike are made in the image of that God. We also transform chaos into Being, through speech. We transform the manifold possibilities of the future into the actualities of past and present. To tell the truth is to bring the most habitable reality into Being. Truth builds edifices that can stand a thousand years. Truth feeds and clothes the poor, and makes nations wealthy and safe. Truth reduces the terrible complexity of a man to the simplicity of his word, so that he can become a partner, rather than an enemy. Truth makes the past truly past, and makes the best of the future’s possibilities. Truth is the ultimate, inexhaustible natural resource. It’s the light in the darkness. See the truth. Tell the truth>’ Jordan Peterson
The White’s celebrate their 15 year anniversary in this powerful and entertaining episode of the Date Your Wife Podcast where they have a conversation around the all-important and ofttimes tricky topic of Money inside a marriage relationship. Every week married couple Danielle and Garrett J White share insights and perspectives from within their own lives regarding the following topics discussed each month: Week 1: Sex Week 2: Money Week 3: Parenting Week 4: Communication In This Week’s Podcast….Money Point #1: Save the Date Danielle: For years, we celebrated our anniversary on the 22nd of August until six years ago when I found our old wedding book and was so shocked to see the date of August 21st. Garrett: We’re grown ass adults and every year we text our mothers to see what date we got fucking married, though we do remember the first place we had sex after we got married. QUESTION How do you show each other that remembering your anniversary important to you? Point #2: When Visions Collide A crucial turning point for Garrett was in having a collision with Danielle about investing in blinds for his Warrior HQ – a vision inside his business that he could see but that she could not. For a long time, Garrett didn’t see the point in the purses that Danielle loves buying, but now he does. Danielle: It’s creative expression which transfers over to confidence in life, business, and in everything else. QUESTION How do you as a couple deal with two different visions of where to invest your money? Point #3: Leading a Double Life Danielle: After everything was ripped from us, it took about four years to rebuild that trust. And in that four years, everything felt unsafe and inconsistent to me so I finally said, screw you. I’ll do my thing, you do yours. As women, we look to our husbands for safety and security. When that goes away, there’s this lack of trust. I questioned every little move Garrett was making because I was building back up the trust from years of his patterns of inconsistency with money. QUESTION Gentlemen, are you providing security and safety for your Queen? Point #4: The Awakening Garrett: After giving Danielle the responsibility of handling the bills because I got so stressed out about my inability to pay them, she began taking on that stress. I realized I was using my wife as a shield from me having to deal with shit. My wife started channeling heavy levels of masculine energy which had us fighting at home a ton. I’m like fuck, I’m coming home to a dude. I realized I was the one who had created this dude the moment I decided to turn the queen into a shield. I had an awakening. QUESTION What needs to shift in your relationship when it comes to being the man and leading the battle so you can take your wife out of that role? Point #5: Reality Check Garrett: Gentlemen, if you’re going to go make the money, then you manage the money. All of you fucking men out there who are expecting your wife to split the fucking bills with you, fuck you. Women want a purpose to produce but they don’t want to feel the pressure of having to be the provider. There are far too many men who are okay with the idea that they can sit back and lean on the production power of the Queen and only build themselves far enough to meet halfway. QUESTION Ladies, how do you feel about this? Communication Challenge: Gentlemen, ask yourself this question: Who would I have to become such that my wife could choose to work and choose to produce if she wanted to? Date Night Topic: On your date this week, take a trip down memory lane and recall the events leading up to the day the two of you met. What impressed you about each other? What have you grown to love about each other through the years? Quote of the Week: “At the end of the day, I’ve yet to meet a powerful producing woman who doesn’t want her man to raise the sword and go to war so she can rest at times.” —Garrett J White “I got to this place where I wanted to be in the relationship with Garrett because I wanted to, not because I felt I had to.” —Danielle K White
The Beer Guys dusted off their Chacos and hit the SweetWater 420 Festival! Since it's one of the largest beer (and music and comedy) festivals in the state, we figured it was a good time to talk about beer fests. Specifically, some of the great ones in the southeast (and the country), and our opinions on what makes a great beer fest. Also, some tips for newbies on surviving one! We broadcast from the mobile Airstream studios of 30A Radio, so we talked to Cory Davis about the beer scene in the Florida panhandle. Some great information for folks looking to travel south on vacation this summer. Truck and Tap's Beers of the Week At the SweetWater Experience tent, they really pulled out the stops. With 28 beers on tap - almost every one only available in limited amounts and usually at the brewery - we took advantage of it. First, we sampled SweetWater's Mexican Lager, a great easy drinker for beach, parties...or concerts! But next, Tim and Aaron were able to introduce Cory to one of their favorite SweetWater beers, the Exodus Porter. And in no way should this serve as a plea for SweetWater to return this brew back into production..... Headlines (sponsored by Your Pie Perimeter): Brass Tap expanding to Tuscaloosa Scofflaw doubling production capacity - 4 new 90 barrel tanks coming - from CRL Contracting! Shelton Brothers Festival coming to Atlanta Printer's Ale Manufacturing opens up first production brewery in Carrolton. New Realm seeking development bonds from the city of Atlanta.
