It's one of my favorite conversations of the year! I love books. I love lists. I love the end of the year. So naturally I LOVE the annual Best Books of the Year conversation with my real life book club friends Yasmin Dunn and Stephanie Newman-Smith. We're back together for our SIXTH annual Best Books of the Year conversation. This one felt a little different from year's past because in 2023 we chose to do a mid-year episode called Best Books of the Year (So Far). In Episode 179 from back in June, we talked about many of the big, buzzy books that released in the first half of the year, which let us share other favorites in this year-end conversation. LISTEN TO US DISCUSS THE BOOKS WE DIDN'T LIKE IN 2023 ON PATREON I hope you enjoy this monster episode! A brand-new full-cast audio production of Good Omens, the internationally beloved novel and collaboration by bestselling authors Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. Starring Michael Sheen as Aziraphale, David Tennant as Crowley and Rebecca Front as the Narrator. According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner. So, the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon - both of whom have lived amongst Earth's mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle - are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.... Don't miss Season 2 of Good Omens, coming soon to Amazon Prime Video. The internationally beloved novel by dream literary collaborators and internationally bestselling writers, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Soon to be a massive new TV launch on Amazon Prime Video and the BBC, a series written and show-run by Neil himself and starring David Tennant, Michael Sheen, Jon Hamm and Miranda Richardson, to name but a few. 'Marvellously benign, ridiculously inventive and gloriously funny' Guardian There is a hint of Armageddon in the air. According to the Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (recorded, thankfully, in 1655, before she blew up her entire village and all its inhabitants, who had gathered to watch her burn), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. So the Armies of Good and Evil are massing, the four Bikers of the Apocalypse are revving up their mighty hogs and hitting the road, and the world's last two remaining witchfinders are getting ready to Fight the Good Fight. Atlantis is rising. Frogs are falling. Tempers are flaring, and everything appears to be going to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not particularly looking forward to the coming Rapture. They've lived amongst Humanity for millennia, and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle. So if Crowley and Aziraphale are going to stop it from happening, they've got to find and kill the AntiChrist (which is a shame, really, as he's a nice kid). There's just one glitch: someone seems to have misplaced him.

J. Abrams, and Ben Stephenson. Based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, Lovecraft Country follows "Atticus Black as he joins up with his friend Letitia and his Uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father. This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback." ‘Catch-22' (Hulu, 2019) Starring Christopher Abbot, Kyle Chandler, George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, produced by Clooney. Catch-22 is described by Hulu as "the story of the incomparable, artful dodger, Yossarian, a US Air Force bombardier in World War II who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. But his real problem is not the enemy, but rather his own army which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to avoid his military assignments, he'll be in violation of Catch-22, a hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule which specifies that a concern for one's own safety in the face of dangers which are real and immediate is the process of a rational mind; a man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but a request to be removed from duty is evidence of sanity and therefore makes him ineligible to be relieved from duty." ‘Central Park Five' (Netflix, 2019) Created byAva DuVernay Starring Michael K. Williams, Vera Farmiga & John Leguizamo. “Based on a true story that gripped the nation, the four-episode series will chronicle the notorious case of five teenagers of color who were convicted of a rape they did not commit.” Spans from spring of 1989, when each were first questioned about the incident, to 2014 when they were exonerated and a settlement was reached with the city of New York. Living With Yourself (Netflix, 2019) Created by Timothy Greenberg Starring Paul Rudd who also executive produces Living With Yourself begins when "George Elliot is burned out and facing an impasse in both his personal and professional life. When he undergoes a novel treatment to become a better person, he finds he's been replaced by a new and improved George — revealing that his own worst enemy is himself. Told from multiple perspectives with intersecting storylines, the philosophical comedy asks: Do we really want to be better?" Four Weddings And A Funeral (Hulu, 2019) Created by Mindy Kaling Starring Jessica Williams Inspired by the 1994 British romantic comedy film, Four Weddings and a Funeral centers on Jess (Williams), the young communications director for a New York senatorial campaign, who receives a wedding invitation from her college schoolmate now living in London.
