This podcast is the audio version of the Gear Garage Live Show, where we answer submitted questions and talk all things whitewater. Topics and links that Zach talked about in this episode Answer Questions River Rescue Gear at River Hardware Some of the Questions that Zach covered in the Q&A section of this episode Topic: Highwater Middle Fork of the Salmon I'm invited on a MFS trip June 10. Super psyched! The trip leader wants to cap the trip at 5 feet, but I bet it will be higher. I'm pushing for a careful safe trip, even if higher than 5 feet. I feel up to the challenge 100%. The crew is solid. Any thoughts on flows and wisdom of going? I hate the idea of the permit being canceled. Thanks! Topic: Guide Shoes What about guides wearing Chacos... Do you have any thoughts about that? Topic: Rope Selection You've covered a lot on static line length and diameter on your previous videos, and I'm curious to hear more about material and buoyancy. On whitewater gear you offer the sterling super static 2 rope, but I don't believe that's a high floating material, and is quite a bit heavier without being stronger than some other equivalent 3/8" ropes like ultra line. Can you review a bit more on rope design/materials vs use in whitewater rescue applications? Sterling looks to be the standard in ropes, and their ultra line appears like the best overall option for weight/strength vs flotation. Only downside I can see is that ultra line is not available in sizes other than 1/4" and 3/8" if someone needs 11mm or larger. Topic: 18' Raft Owyhee What's your low flow cutoff for getting a medium to lightly loaded 18' raft down the Lower Owhyee? I'm able to make technical moves just not interested in getting high centered or squeezed all the time and having to get out to shove a whole bunch. Nuisance rapid for instance. Does an 18' even fit between boulders at flows less than 1K CFS? I'm 5 days out from launch and flows have been very slowly dropping, currently around 1300 CFS to 1400 CFS with no major precip in forecast. Motoring out and my 18' has the registration. Have a smaller raft with fishing frame and registration but its not rigged to motor and would like to avoid that hassle of frame changeover and assembly if possible. Thanks for your insights! Topic: IK Safety Thanks for this channel; it is an excellent resource for people like me who are new to rafting. Two buddies and I took the NWRC Class III rowing school last year, which was awesome. The Lower Salmon was one of the rivers the instructors recommended as a good first private trip, so we are planning a multi-day trip with our families on the Lower Salmon in mid-July. We will have three rafts. We have several high school kids in our group. I am considering bringing two or three inflatable kayaks for them to use if they want more excitement than riding in the rafts. Everyone will be in helmets and PFDs. The kids are strong swimmers and comfortable in the water. I have three questions: Where should we put the IKs in the group? I am thinking between the middle and last raft as that would leave two downstream rafts in case they swim. Would having three IKs in the water at one time be too many given we only have three rafts? Could you talk about how trip leaders monitor IKs on your commercial trips.

After acting as the “Hostess with the Mostest” on the red carpet at a recent fashion event, Holly's feet – while gorgeous in her designer shoes – ended up killing her from standing up all night in the wrong shoes.     THIS IS A FASHION CRIME:   Wearing shoes that are too high, no matter how beautiful they are - or how perfectly they accentuate your outfit - hamburger meat for feet is no bueno. (Can the marketing people please trademark that?)    Recovering from her foot pain, in this episode, your favorite personal stylist Holly Katz outlines the shoes you need to have in your wardrobe.     This is important is because people sometimes are not sure what the current trends are or how much money they should be spending on shoes.  Or, how to branch out of their comfort zone when it comes to trying on something different or new.     People often tend to be very price-driven when it comes to shoes, and obviously that makes sense. They have a set amount in their mind, which can be a little bit limiting if you're looking around for something interesting and new.     With that being said, these are the must-have styles for shoes.  (As always, please be sure to check Holly's Pinterest Board for all of these shoe recommendations and more!)    FLATS  Designer Slides  Ballet  Mules  Loafers  Mary Janes  Oxfords  Flat Slingbacks    HOW TO STYLE FLATS:  You can wear flats with just about *anything, but please, please wear no-show socks of some sort! Wear your flats with a mini dress, cropped flair pants, or anytime you are busy working on your feet all day with your favorite slacks or dressy shorts.     *Pro Tip:   If you are grown up woman going to a formal event, you must wear heels. No flats allowed (unless you've just had old-lady bunion surgery – ouch!).     BRANDS WE LOVE:  Birdies, Valentino Rock Studs, Hermès, Jeffrey Campbell, Sam Edelman, Sarah Flint, Ally Shoes and Cecelia NYC shoes.     HEELS:  Wedge heels  Block heels  Platform heels    HOW TO STYLE HEELS:  Wear new heels around the house to break them in, start with lower heels if you have not worn high heels in a while, and try a block heel or wedge heel for comfort.     High heels look best with dresses and skirts of all lengths, of course, but also try them with leather pants, dressy shorts or jeans.    Pro Tip:  Platform heels can give the illusion of a high heel without the pain of a stiletto!    BRANDS WE LOVE:  Gianvito Rossi, Roger Vivier, Steve Madden, Guiseppe Zanotti     BOOTS:  Tall boots  Booties  Cowboy boots  Winter boots  Not Rainboots    HOW TO STYLE BOOTS:  Holly LOVES a good boot! Boots will make your legs look longer and leaner. She wears them with dresses, maxi skirts, pants, really, everything.     Look for short booties that come just to the ankle bone. You can also try combat-STYLE boots, with just a touch of the combat sass. As well as real cowboy boots, or cowboy-style boots, as they are always, always in style.    You do not really want to wear suede or heavy boots in the summer – if you run hot, you know what we mean.     *Pro Tip:  Don't even think of wearing tall galoshes or rain boots unless you live in Seattle and are walking in the rain. PUDDLES of rain. Stomping around a grocery store in Atlanta in your tall rain boots; just know they are for function, or walking around in a torrential rain storm in NYC. Not when you're going to your garage and it's a threat of rain.   BRANDS WE LOVE:  Paris Texas, Prada, Roger Vivier, Boot Barn, Gianvito Rossi, Isabel Marant,       SANDALS:  You can wear flat sandals, wedge sandals, low-heel sandals and high-heel sandals.    You are NOT allowed to wear Tevas, Chacos, Crocs, sports slides or *flip flops. NON-NEGOSH. Also, no socks with sandals. #DUH. Don't let her find out.   The only pass you will get from Holly are Birkenstocks, because they are always evolving and somehow manage to stay on-trend. This is the only shoe in the “hippy footwear” family allowed.    *Pro Tip:   Rubber flip flops are for the beach. Period. Leather flip flops, embellished flip flops, etc., are  acceptable.     FitFlops are not allowed. Never. Ever. They are not cute, and they don't make you fit. Stop falling for the false advertising.    BRANDS WE LOVE: Tory Burch, Valentino, Gucci, Alexandre Birman, Jimmy Choo , Guiseppe Zanotti     FASHION SNEAKERS:  If you are a friend of the podcast, you know the rules already: NO workout sneakers unless you are working out. END OF STORY.    Fashion sneakers are fun, on-trend, comfortable and don't smell like a gym locker room. See the difference? Go back and listen to Episode 128 to get the full lecture once and for all. Then, you can ENJOY the sneaker trend!!     BRANDS WE LOVE:  Superga, Nike, Golden Goose, New Balance, Converse, Adidas, Michael Kors      FINAL THOUGHTS: 1.) Please wear socks with your shoes when you can. No-shows are best, but Tube socks are also back (yikes)- so don't be shocked when your teenagers are rocking those.   2.) How many shoes are too many? You can never have too many.   Just kidding! If you have over 100 pair, that is probably too much. You should have as many as you can realistically wear. For real. A cohesive shoe wardrobe is anywhere between 25-45 pair.    3.) Keep your shoes updated and looking nice. Go find your neighborhood shoe repair person. Old, worn-out shoes, no matter what the brand or price point, look like old, worn-out shitty shoes.     4.) If your feet hurt, or you have a hard time finding shoes to fit your feet or if you have major feet issues, find a company who caters to customers that are hard to fit like our friends at  Ally Shoes or Pedro Garcia.    5.) Store your shoes properly and where you can always see them: Not in the original box, not under your long dresses in your closet, not in plastic boxes. Find a way to display them in your closet area so you will be tempted to rotate the shoes and styles you have invested in.    Carry on! Life is too short! Eat the cake! Buy the shoes! As a follow-up to the dating coach episode, where our longtime guest Shreye spoke to us about what he learned from going to a dating coach (Episode 125 if you missed it), he is now back on the show to talk to us about his experience with a style coach named Patrick, who Shreye flew to Scottsdale, Arizona to meet in person with his entire wardrobe in tow. Shreye got Patrick's most extensive package, which covered a style consult that covered the perfect color palette for Shreye's skin tone, a shopping trip where Patrick had already pre-selected clothes for Shreye to try on and get custom tailored if necessary, and a final photo shoot with Shreye's fancy new clothes. Patrick even helped Shreye donate all of his old clothes that didn't fit him well before he flew back. Shreye talks about the evolution of his style journey and why he wanted to take these steps at this point in his life, how his makeover has been received by friends (though of course he doesn't have enough data to prove any kind of causality - if you would like to take part in an informal survey to tell us what you think of Shreye's before-and-after shots, send us an email at imthevillainpod@gmail.com), and his thoughts on whether you should wear Chacos on a first date. The very special guest on this episode of The Mile High Podcast is the driving force behind Chiropractic research in Australia.  At school, Marcus was fascinated with the human body and healthcare — so much so, in fact, that when he won an award for public speaking and debating, he bought an anatomy and physiology textbook with his prize money! It was the influence of his then-girlfriend (and future wife) that motivated Marcus to enter chiropractic school. He enrolled at Macquarie University (then the Sydney College of Chiropractic). Before finishing at Macquarie, he received a Bachelor of Science in Anatomy from the University of New South Wales. Then, he completed a Master of Chiropractic at Macquarie. Marcus had the good fortune to be mentored by Dr John Kelly, a well-known chiropractor who taught him the value of constantly learning more and working with other practitioners to show clients the results they seek. Marcus' approach to care looks at healing on all levels. With an integrated model of care, we achieve remarkable results for people where other avenues have failed. Marcus seeks to uncover and understand the needs of each client with the appropriate testing, then holistically apply the best forms of therapy for a total healing blueprint. Marcus has lectured and worked as a tutor at the Canberra Institute of Technology in Psychology. He's provided medical science courses for the Kim Dudley College for Natural Therapists. With his additional studies in kinesiology, Marcus became an instructor in the subject. He's even studied quantum physics and symbolism to work on an incredibly profound, holistic level with his clients. On this podcast, you will hear about: The establishment of Chiropractic Education Online as a not-for-profit to fund raise for vitalistic chiropractic endeavors. Fundraising for the Australian Spinal Research Foundation (ASRF) and the Heidi Haavik's Centre for Chiropractic Research at NZCC for pediatric research Fund-raising to subsidize Chiropractic philosophy education and make philosophy training more accessible The Clinical Applications of Chiropractic Philosophy. ‘It's not a blank canvas': Teva's Anders Bergstrom on how the sandals brand capitalized on recent fashion trends

It's a good time to be an outdoor apparel brand. According to NPD Group, outdoorwear sales are up 45% this year, and some brands have been able to dominate this growing fervor. Teva, the shoe brand known for its velcro strapped sandal, has seen sales grow. In the '80s, when the sandals first hit the market, Teva was the leader in the space. Then, after a couple decades of dominance, fervor died down, as other competitors like Chacos and Keens began to encroach on its territory. But over the last three years the company has been focused on reemerging as a footwear leader. “In short order,” said Anders Bergstrom, Teva's global general manager, “we've retaken the number one position in sport sandals.” Bergstrom joined the Modern Retail Podcast and spoke about how he's been handling all the curveballs thrown over the last few years. Teva -- which is pronounced ‘teh-vah,' not ‘tee-vah' -- has been around since 1985. “The idea -- the notion -- of a sport sandal did not exist until 1985,” said Bergstrom. Teva, he explained, was the first of its kind. “What Teva did was introduce an active component to the sandal category in a way that had not been done before,” he said. That has been the North Star for the brand -- and it's long been associated with its well-known classic style. But the brand has been staying relevant with new styles and even brand collaborations. Some partnerships include the singer Jhené Like, Outdoor Voices and Cotpaxi. “The sport sandal itself is so iconic -- it's so unusual -- that, for lack of a better term, collab partners just have a field day tweaking it,” said Bergstrom. “It's not a blank canvas -- it is just a number of straps that are attached to a midsole.” What also has kept Teva relevant of late is the fact that a certain type of outdoor apparel has become quite fashionable. What some describe gorpcore -- which includes outdoor classics like Patagonia vests and hiking boots -- has become all the rage in New York fashion circles. Said Bergstrom, the way to know a fashion trend is on the horizon is to look at what's going on in Japan. “What we call gorpcore is really just the way people in Tokyo dress, said Bergstrom. “It's really fascinating.” He went on to explain how this has led to a new apparel adage. “If we ever have a question about whether a product is going to work or not, [ask] can you see it on the streets of Tokyo?”

We broadcast from the mobile Airstream studios of 30A Radio, so we talked to Cory Davis about the beer scene in the Florida panhandle. Some great information for folks looking to travel south on vacation this summer. Truck and Tap's Beers of the Week At the SweetWater Experience tent, they really pulled out the stops. With 28 beers on tap - almost every one only available in limited amounts and usually at the brewery - we took advantage of it. First, we sampled SweetWater's Mexican Lager, a great easy drinker for beach, parties...or concerts! But next, Tim and Aaron were able to introduce Cory to one of their favorite SweetWater beers, the Exodus Porter. Love Your Story

River Touchstones – A story from the San Juan River Heraclitus said, “You cannot step into the same river twice.” Today’s story takes this very literally. One thing I do not realize the first time I head for the river is that the person who steps onto the raft will not be the same person who steps off.  The water washes not only grains of sand from the belly of the rock; it washes from me my routine, takes me to a momentary place, a liminal space, where so many things cease to matter.  The consequences of the step onto the river are as opaque as the red silt water.  It is a time and space where, like the rock, I am carved… we are carved, yet added upon one grain at a time. Stories are our lives in language. Welcome to the Love Your Story podcast. I’m Lori Lee, and I’m excited for our future together of telling stories, evaluating our own stories, and lifting ourselves and others to greater places because of our control over our stories. This podcast is about empowerment and giving you, the listener, ideas to work with in making your stories work for you. Power serves you best when you know how to use it. Last week we shared stories of serendipity and miracles. This week I’ll share an award-winning story about how we collect the touchstones of meaning in our life travels, and why those lovely, meaningful stones matter. A warm breeze hums through the screens along the top of the palapa-style hut. Grass walls swing like skirts as I stroll in, unintentionally late, my Chacos picking their way across the dirt floor scattered with peanut shells. My navy sarong wisps around my tan legs, natural air conditioning in the hot, dry desert air, and the pre-trip dinner fills with the chatter of strangers. “Where are you from?” “What do you do?” “What brings you to the San Juan?” “Have you been here before?” I see him then. But at the time it means nothing. He means nothing. Instead, I glance at the lady wearing the red and blue Hawaiian shirt with naked surfers on it, and the two older gals with funny sun hats and drooping skin at the first table. A pudgy rocket scientist from Colorado and a newspaper owner and his wife chatter as their verbal exchange disappears on the San Juan breeze. I am the journalist-on-the-job and I plop down by an artist from New York and him, the writer for the New York Times at the corner table. We introduce ourselves and make pointless chatter about the wonderful week ahead. We have no idea the difference seven days will make.  In our mid-thirties, we claim the title of “youngest in the group”.  It’s the night before we launch. The energies and gestures, some indifferent, some intense, have started to intermingle between everyone; the beginning of our metamorphosis from single to collective. Tonight we will sleep in our B&B’s, our motels and lodges; tomorrow we will pile, one on top of another, into cargo vans, our torpedo-like gray dry-bags filled with too few clothes and a shortage of sunscreen.  Tomorrow we will begin to share more than we ever intended–the river requires intimacy.  You cannot live for seven days in the wild without in some part, meshing with those you bathe, barf, sweat and eat with.  There are not many circumstances in which you find yourself peeing in public with recently acquired acquaintances, but river running is one of them. It’s only been a few months since I took my children, divided nine years of belongings and left my husband to try and find the happiness I was certain I deserved. Loneliness is a multi-sided space. There is the loneliness when one simply wants companionship; there is the terrible loneliness one can have despite being with another person; and then there is the compound loneliness of being untouched, unappreciated, unconnected. This is the loneliness I carry on my back as I step onto the river. At 6:00 a.m. we struggle to push the rafts from the shore, the sun filling the desert with color and warmth, the blue bulk of the...

An unseasonable cool front nailed China just as that nasty snowstorm hit the eastern seaboard of the US of A. We got awesome, sub-70s weather in Bangkok, which was a welcome change. And no, we don’t spend the whole show talking about the weather. Because boring. We share two stories on today’s program, one from Bangkok, Thailand and one from Puducherry, India: 1. Shoeless In Siam Music credit: Upbeat Forever by Kevin MacLeod Bangkok is a shoe-obsessed city. People spend thousands of baht (do the conversion yourself) on shoes of all shapes and sizes. Which is weird for Evo, as he’s happy wearing his Chacos everywhere. And which is weird for Sheila, because wearing shoes inside is a no-no. Even in a job interview, as she soon found out. 2. Scratching The Travel Itch  Music credit: Leopard Print Elevator by Kevin MacLeod We hadn’t considered the effect of peer pressure on helping people to travel, but Smriti Modi is counting on it. That’s the gist behind her  travel startup, The Itch List (http://www.theitchlist.com/) . As she says, it’s sort of like a bucket list, but filled with things you’ll actually do. She also shares one of her favorite places to travel in her own home country. We’re off to Kuala Lampur in a few days, so we’re sure to have stories to tell you next week of that adventure. But we’re also going back to Pattaya Beach with some friends who have a drinking problem (we may be that drinking problem) so there’s a chance we’ll forget. Or have something even more interesting to related. Such is our new life! And That's The Show!
