Unlike traditional food pantries, it allows families to freely select their preferred items, offering a more realistic shopping experience. The pantry, with three aisles of shelf-stable items and fresh produce, emphasizes healthy choices and efficient budgeting. Volunteers accompany visitors, providing nutritional guidance and discussing goal progress. The Food Security Program aids families with a minor child in Cobb, allowing weekly visits and promoting goal-setting. The pantry, open by appointment, aims to enhance lives by empowering families to make their own food choices. Hotel-motel tax collections in Cobb County are also rising, showing a 7.12% increase in the fiscal year so far. He emphasized educating the public about the tax and its implications rather than taking a position. Plant's extensive career includes his role in bringing the Braves to Cobb County in 2017 and his involvement in the success of Truist Park and The Battery Atlanta. We'll be back in a moment Break: DRAKE – GCPS STORY 6: Cobb Off the Hook for More Than $7M in Barrett Reliever Costs Cobb County's contribution to the South Barrett Reliever project is decreasing significantly due to increased funding from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). The county, initially expected to cover over $11 million of the $38 million project, will now pay about $5.6 million for the third phase, including the construction of a 450-foot bridge over I-75. GDOT will contribute an additional $7.4 million in construction costs, bringing the state's total contributions to approximately $32 million. The project, led by the Town Center Community Improvement District, aims to reduce traffic on Barrett Parkway by around 20%. The final phase is expected to conclude by the end of the year. Additionally, the commission approved around $280,000 to consultancy Kimley Horn for the third phase of a countywide surveillance and communication network, aiming to improve traffic flows and reduce delays. STORY 7: UGA Extension announces 2024 Georgia Farmer of the Year Bruce Redmond, owner of Shiloh Farms in Effingham County, Georgia, has been named the 2024 Georgia Farmer of the Year. Redmond took over Shiloh Farms in 2018, expanding its operations to 2,800 acres of rented and owned farmland, cultivating peanuts and cotton. The farm, a major producer of certified Tifton 9 bahia grass seed, has become the Southeast's largest producer. The United Auto Workers Union (UAW) has initiated coordinated strikes at three factories belonging to General Motors, Ford and Stellantis—the parent company of Chrysler—kicking off one of the most impactful industrial labor actions in the U.S. in many years. In this episode of Bay Current, KCBS Radio anchors Eric Thomas and Margie Shafer speak with William Gould, Stanford law professor emeritus and former chairman of the National Labor Relations Board and author of “For Labor to Build Upon.”
Sarah Ansari (Royal Holloway, University of London) speaks at the Oxford South Asian Intellectual History Seminar on 31 Oct 2022 South Asia's transition from colonialism to independence in 1947 was undoubtedly one of the most momentous events of the twentieth century. Not surprisingly perhaps, its early postcolonial years have come to exercise a great pull for a range of scholars, who explore this key period, on the one hand, to ask questions about colonial-era legacies or continuities, and, on the other, to identify developments that help to explain what is happening there in the twenty-first century. This paper accordingly explores how - during those early postcolonial years - ideas about, and forms of, citizenship were created or forged by contingent processes of interaction between the ‘state' – its representatives and institutions at different levels – and ‘society' – its citizens in-the-making. Very often, as this paper will highlight, it was the day-to-day realities of the time that directly shaped the broader context in which Pakistanis and Indians engaged with what it seemed to mean, in practice, to be a citizen in post-1947 South Asia. Sarah Ansari is a historian of modern and contemporary South Asia, based at Royal Holloway, University of London. Much of her research has focused on issues linked with religion, identity, migration, citizenship, gender, and the province of Sindh, both before and since 1947. Her latest monograph—co-written with William Gould and entitled Boundaries of Belonging (Cambridge University Press, 2019)—explores the intersections between localities, citizenship and rights as these played out in India (UP) and Pakistan (Sindh) during the decade following Independence. Sarah is also currently President of the Royal Asiatic Society, the first woman to hold this role in the institution's 200-year existence.

An absurd, ridiculous tale of dark humour that might just contain some deeper meaning.'Gould's Book Of Fish' by Richard Flanagan tells the tale of William Buelow Gould, an English convict transported to the penal colony on Sarah's Island and who becomes enamoured with ..... fishes! Whilst it contains elements of real life it is dominated by the fantastical events & insanity of the principal characters. I summarised the book as follows. "I hope Flanagan has as much fun writing this as I did reading it. It's a mad tale narrated by a loony convict. So many good points with the unique fish chapters, absurd humour & entertaining characters. The only downside is that I'm disinterested in art/fishes/penal colonial history so the backdrop wasn't my favourite. I do think this book could be amazing for other people though."As always, I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. Sarah Ansari (Royal Holloway) gives a talk for the Asian Studies Centre seminar series. This talk explores connections between ‘development’ and the politics of agrarian reform in Sindh (Pakistan) during the period of transition straddling Independence. On the one hand, it highlights the place of development thinking in contemporary debates and policy making there before and after 1947; on the other, it acknowledges the role of the local hari movement in pushing for tenancy changes in the Sindhi countryside. Sarah Ansari conducts research primarily (but not exclusively) on the nineteenth and twentieth-century history of Sindh. Her publications have focused on a range of topics, including local religious elites (pirs) under British rule, the impact of Partition in both the short and longer term, and women’s lives in Pakistan’s early years. Her latest book Boundaries of Belonging; localities, citizenship and rights in India and Pakistan (co-authored with William Gould) was published in late 2019.

Gessie Belizaire is a debut author of a thought provoking Political & Social Sciences book titled UnMet Potential. Through a comparative analysis, she is able to look at the long-term ramifications of French colonization on present-day Haiti and Guinea in hopes of uncovering the potential that both nations must rise above the conditions of their past. Born in Haiti and raised in the United States, Belizaire uses her writing to break down cultural barriers, inviting her readers to consider crucial questions about history, the black narrative, and self-identification. She hopes that her writing will empower her readers to be the change they wish to see in the world. Dedicated to a life of service, Belizaire has served as a Taskforce Member on African American Health for the National Medical Association; and was selected as the William Gould award winner for all around outstanding achievement for her community involvement and academics in 2009. As a former contributing writer for Empower Magazine she is most proud that she was able to highlight stories that uplifted the African American community. Belizaire is also the creator and founder of www.thislifeiliveintruth.com, a blog committed to inspiring others to live their most authentic life. Belizaire is currently a Development Associate at YWCA USA, a non-for-profit dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. William Gould speaks at the South Asia Seminar on 21 February 2017 There are two broad trends in historical scholarship on partition: On the one hand, older work traced high politics, and the ‘end-game’ of Empire. On the other, more recent and extensive histories recover partition experiences, refugee politics and everyday violence. Uttar Pradesh and its urban centres were not in partition’s immediate hinterland but were pivotal, this paper argues, at an alternative scale of political mobilisation around volunteer movements. Taking P.D. Tandon’s Hind Rakshak Dal as its central case study, it argues that early 1940s militaristic and drilling organisations were ideologically pivotal to the meaning of ‘Pakistan’ in UP. The paper draws some new conclusions about the significance of these movements’ ideologies of violence to India’s long partition.

Ernie Rea and guests discuss B.R. Ambedkar's role in forming modern India. It's 70 years since the new country of Pakistan was born ; followed the next day by an independent India. There can be few who are unaware of the seminal role played by Mahtama Gandhi in the struggle for independence. Much less known is Dr B.R Ambedkar. Many would argue that his contribution was every bit as important. Ambedkar was the country's first Law Minister and he was the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. He was a Dalit - or Untouchable - and he had a major falling out with Gandhi on how the problem of Untouchability should be dealt with. Joining Ernie to discuss Ambedkar and his Legacy are Dr. Ananya Vajpeyi, Fellow and Associate Professor at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, New Delhi; Santosh Dass, President of the Federation of Ambedkarite and Buddhist Organisations and Vice Chair of the Anti Caste Alliance; and William Gould, Professor of Indian History at Leeds University. Producer. Rosie Dawson.

India is about to go to the polls. 788 million people are eligible to vote in the world's largest democracy. The role of regional, local and caste-based parties is important in Indian politics where Governments tend to rule by coalition, but this election is being represented as an epic struggle between the Indian National Congress party and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by the controversial figure of Narendra Modi, a Hindu Nationalist. Joining Ernie Rea to discuss the role of religious nationalism in Indian politics are William Gould, Professor of Indian History at the University of Leeds, Atreyee Sen, lecturer in Contemporary Religion and Conflict at the University of Manchester, and Zoya Hasan formerly Professor, Jawaharlal Nehru University and currently National Fellow of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR).
