Apprenticeship programs give local women a head start on manufacturing careers…a Premium Guard distribution hub is coming to Weirton and creating 100 jobs…and Morgantown's NextGen Federal Systems is making waves in the defense technology industry…on today's daily304. #1 – From MAMC – Less than a year ago, Tamara Shinn of Sissonville was struggling to figure out what to do with her life. The mother of a high schooler and two adult children had worked a series of relatively low-paying jobs and was searching for something better. She heard about a program called the Step Up for Women Advanced Manufacturing Pre-Apprenticeship and decided to enroll. Presented by West Virginia Women Work in partnership with the Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center, the free 10-week Step Up program prepares women for entry-level jobs as machinists. Shinn and her classmate Gwynna Midkiff already are working in the industry, serving paid internships at Industrial Bolting Technologies in Charleston, where they operate computer-numerical-controlled machines similar to those at MAMC. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025. West Virginia's giant salamander population serves as a monitor to the Mountain State's water quality…West Virginia Northern Community College receives a federal grant to support manufacturing education…and Weirton residents gear up for the tastiest event of the year: Weirton Restaurant Week…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – Beneath the surface of clean-flowing streams in West Virginia, a multitude of strange creatures lurk, but none is perhaps more shocking to encounter than the hellbender. Also known as the devil dog, the mud devil, and the Allegheny alligator, its names testify to the strangeness of what turns out to be a giant aquatic salamander. These strange creatures thrive in only the most healthy streams. They are thus indicators of poor water quality, a concern in parts of West Virginia where the hellbender lives. Due to the impact of disease and habitat loss, the animal is listed as a vulnerable species though groups like the New River Conservancy. The conservancy is urging people in the New River watershed and beyond to comment on a proposal by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to designate it as endangered. “Not only does the presence of hellbenders indicate the rivers we rely on for drinking water are clean,” says Andrew Downs, executive director of the conservancy, “but this sometimes-strange-looking and beautiful creature is part of the identity of our region. Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2025/01/07/monster-hellbenders-hiding-west-virginia-streams/ #2 – From WEIRTON DAILY TIMES – West Virginia Northern Community College has been awarded $1.5 million as part of the U.S. Department of Labor's $65 million Strengthening Community Colleges Training Grant initiative. WVNCC is one of only 18 institutions nationwide, and the only recipient in West Virginia, to receive this funding. The grant will fund WVNCC's M.A.P.S. 2.0: Manufacturing and Production Skills Pathway for the 21st Century. The program is a next-generation, industry-aligned skills pathway designed to support the revitalized manufacturing and production industries in West Virginia's Northern Panhandle. This initiative aims to build workforce education and training capacity in the Ohio River Valley region, focusing on sustainable and scalable change to prepare students for careers in advanced manufacturing and next generation energy. Scheduled from Feb. 2-8, Weirton Restaurant Week is being organized by the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce as a way to celebrate the local dining scene. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Monday, Jan. 6, 2025. Weirton's Theo Yianni's serves up bangin' good Greek food…a new initiative aims to attract economic investment to historic buildings in rural communities…and Wheeling's Streetscape beautifies the city and creates a foundation for future investments…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV LIVING – Shawn Mihellis may tell you it was never his plan to own a popular Greek restaurant in Weirton, but the winding road that led him there seems to suggest otherwise. One: His parents came to America by boat, making Mihellis the first in his family to be born in this country. Two: They eventually migrated to Weirton, a town in the Northern Panhandle with a large Greek population. Three: Back in his younger days, he ran an after-hours bar in his basement where he'd make and serve his own Greek gyros. He went to college to pursue a teaching degree, but the restaurant business called him back. He went on to open Theo Yianni's, a little Greek restaurant in the middle of town, 13 years ago—and that small spot quickly became a hit among the locals. Read more: https://wvliving.com/bangin-good-food/ #2 – From WV EXPLORER – An initiative designed to attract economic investment to historic buildings and districts in rural communities is being introduced to Congress by senators Mark Warner of Virginia and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia. The Rural Historic Tax Credit Improvement Act will significantly reduce financial burdens for rural homeowners and developers in historic districts and where buildings are otherwise listed on the national register. Capito said the act will help rural communities that otherwise must compete with high-traffic development areas. As early as the 1940s, many towns across America began losing commerce to larger cities along major transportation routes. Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2024/12/20/west-virginia-tax-credit-benefit-rural-commmunities/ #3 – From WV EXECUTIVE – In 2022, Governor Jim Justice approved the bid award of $31.9 million for the Wheeling Streetscape Project. This project, scheduled to be completed by summer 2025, will beautify downtown Wheeling by adding decorative traffic signals, plants and trees as well as brickwork along Main and Market streets and between 10th and 16th streets. ADA-compliant curb cuts and widened sidewalks are also part of the project. Josh Jefferson, president and CEO of the Regional Economic Development Partnership, says the project has created a foundation for future investment and supports the city's existing business community. In recent years, Wheeling and its surrounding cities have seen new businesses arise, such as Form Energy, Newbridge Academy for Kids, Waterfront Hall and Bridge Tavern & Grill. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Monday, Dec. 23, 2024. Ever wonder how the Northern Panhandle got its shape? Like the state itself, it came about as the result of a contentious dispute…a Monroe County farm is the winner of the Pitch Southern WV Business Idea Competition…and 26 small business owners graduate from a Goldman Sachs program at Bridge Valley CTC…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – You've probably heard of the Mason-Dixon Line, but what about the Ellicot Line? West Virginia's remarkable shape is partly defined by its odd Northern Panhandle, a finger of land that extends northward more than 60 miles from its central mass. Home to Wheeling, the state's first capital, the panhandle's origins date back to the 1700s and a contentious boundary dispute between Virginia and Pennsylvania that helped shape the history of the U.S. According to Weirton-based historian Paul Zuros, both colonies issued land grants before the American Revolution and sent soldiers and frontiersmen to settle the same land. The dispute eventually became so aggressive that the Continental Congress was forced to step in. Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2024/11/19/west-virginia-northern-panhandle-origin-dispute/ #2 – From WV HIVE – Michelle and Derek Miller, owners of Waymaker's Meadows Farm in Monroe County, are celebrating a significant milestone as winners of the Pitch Southern West Virginia Business Idea Competition. The competition was coordinated by the West Virginia Hive Network. Their farm-to-table business, which offers fresh lamb, chicken and duck eggs, and produce, took home the first-place prize of $2,500. Their winnings will be used to purchase mobile electric coolers that will allow their meat, eggs and produce to be offered to customers in a wider geographic region. The early positive customer interest in Waymaker's Meadows Farm has the Millers taking steps for expansion. They are now leasing an additional 90 acres of land and have added more farm animals. Goldman Sachs graduated 26 small business owners from its signature business-education program, 10,000 Small Businesses, at BridgeValley Community & Technical College earlier this month. The commencement is part of the programs' $100 million Investment in Rural Communities grant, an initiative to reach rural small business owners across 20 states over five years. West Virginia marks the seventh state to host graduates from the program to date after it was launched last year. Goldman Sachs Foundation President Asahi Pompey compared the program to a “mini MBA,” in that it's set up to expand business owners' business-education knowledge and growth. Over the last five decades, as the American steel industry declined, the town lost thousands of jobs. But in July, a new factory -- Form Energy -- opened on the same site and started to bring hundreds of jobs back. Instead of turning iron into steel, it uses the metal to make a new type of battery. This new battery is designed to store energy for around for days--something the standard lithium-ion batteries can't do economically. The project has helped begin to transform the town of Weirton, which spent more than a century centered on the steel works. Form Energy's factory has more than 300 employees now, and plans to have at least 750 by 2028. Weirton bed & breakfasts team up with the local CVB to showcase the work of area artists…the new Heritage Highway joins four other scenic Mountain Rides throughout Almost Heaven…and West Virginia's Paranormal Trail gets even spookier, with four more additions…on today's daily304. #1 – From WEIRTON DAILY TIMES – Weirton area residents and visitors had an opportunity to tour three local bed and breakfasts and view a variety of art recently through a collaboration of the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau and Rivertown Inns. Rivertown Inns is an umbrella for the three bed and breakfasts — Arabian Nights, Aunt Mary's and the Sarah Miller House — which teamed for a revival of the CVB's Art Hop event. The bed and breakfast's artistic guests were James Sulkowski, an oil painter from Canonsburg, Pa., and Devin Ashmore, a photographer from Weirton. Arabian Nights owner Danielle Thomas said of the art hop, “I think it's fantastic. I love the collaboration with the other bed and breakfasts. We all refer people to each other.” An avid baker, she suggested a cookie crawl, in which visitors would be treated to cookies and other snacks made by local bakers, could be the next event for them. Manufacturing long-duration energy storage at a commercial scale is seen as essential for lowering carbon emissions that are causing climate change, because it makes clean energy available when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing. Investment company T. Rowe Price led the funding. GE Vernova, a spin-off of General Electric's energy businesses, and several venture capital firms were also involved. A job fair this past spring for Cleveland-Cliffs' 900 workers included opportunities with manufacturers like Form Energy, the cutting edge battery factory setting up in Weirton, and Nucor Steel. Gov. Josh Shapiro signed the legislation, lowering the temperature to 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit. New law allows crematories established after 1989 to operate at or above 1,600°F. This will immediately lower fuel costs and ease strain on equipment for the 200 facilities in Pennsylvania, which is particularly beneficial as mortuary services handle an aging population. The aging Baby Boomer generation is causing a shift away from traditional burial. The decision is influenced by environmental impact, cost, and religious sentiments. On the morning of Sunday, August 12th, 2012, a 16-year-old High School student, Jane Doe, woke up in Steubenville, Ohio, about 15 miles from her hometown of Weirton, West Virginia. She woke up in a strange basement and had no idea where she was. She was missing her earrings, underwear and cell phone. In the room with her were tow boys, aged 16 and 17, named Trent May and Malik Richmond. Jane remembered very little from the night before, only that she had been at a few parties with the Steubenville Varsity Football players, and, after texting some friends, that she had also been raped. The following year would bring chaos to Steubenville, Ohio. Accusations, denials, lawsuits, hackers, crime blogs and an article in the New York Times would divide this small town. It was their word against hers, and they were the star football players. Until damning evidence in the form of text messages and a video came to light. Show Notes: https://rollredrollfilm.com/

A recent Fox News national report highlighted a study that found West Virginia to be the most festive state in the nation. That article zeroed in on Bluefield, which is West Virginia's trademarked Christmas City. It discussed the Holiday of Lights and other featured Christmas City attractions, including the ferris wheel, ice skating rink and Christmas Market, all of which are located at city park. City officials say the national attention will only help in making others across the nation aware of West Virginia's Christmas City. “I was pleasantly surprised, and it does further help our efforts,” Bluefield Mayor Ron Martin said. “I went through the park Saturday night, and it is phenomenal down there.” Check out www.visitmercercounty.com to learn more about happenings in Bluefield and the surrounding area. The $30 million project will use Form's batteries to store and discharge power for 100 hours, according to the California Energy Commission. That fills a gap between solar generation during the day and wind generation at night. The energy captured at off-peak times can be discharged to the grid when demand is the highest. The batteries will be built in Weirton. Form Energy is building its plant on the former site of Weirton Steel and could employ 750 workers or more. According to the City of Huntington, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Railroad Administration announced a $500,000 grant to help restore the route. Huntington Mayor Steve Williams says the Corridor Identification & Development Program grant will help the company and the city figure out how to get the daily service back up and running, get it funded and bring economic development and tourism on the line to “new levels.” The route goes through nine towns in the Mountain State, which include Huntington, Charleston, Montgomery, Smithers, Thurmond, Prince, Hinton, Alderson and White Sulphur Springs. It is the only Amtrak route in the country with stations inside a national park. It starts — as all pepperoni rolls do — with the dough. But not just any dough. That's one of the secrets of Kanawha schools' pepperoni rolls. They are made using the same recipe as the delicious, soft and sweet hot rolls that accompany every school Thanksgiving dinner and Salisbury steak. Cooks will tell you — this is one of the most time consuming lunches to prepare. A lot of schools shift pepperoni roll day to the end of the week so they can work on the rolls a few days in advance. But there is a good reason to go to all this trouble. These pepperoni rolls are beloved by generations of school kids. “On pepperoni roll days, the teachers would let you out five or ten minutes early so you could get to the cafeteria, because there was always such a long line,” said Whitney Humphrey, who graduated from Riverside High School in 2007. “Because even kids who typically didn't eat school lunch would eat lunch on pepperoni roll day.” Read more: https://wvpublic.org/where-we-learned-about-pepperoni-rolls-uncovering-the-story-of-the-kanawha-county-schools-pepperoni-roll/ Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. Today is Thursday, Aug. 17 A new battery plant is expected to put a charge into Weirton's economy…metal companies play a big part in WV's manufacturing industry…and when life brings you apples, make hard cider--as we chat with the sales director of Hawk Knob…on today's daily304. 1 – From WTOV9 – Following a groundbreaking in late May, a lot of work is being done on the site of Form Energy's multi-million-dollar investment in Weirton. The former Weirton Steel site will manufacture batteries, plus bring greater economic development and infrastructure to the area. Form Energy President and COO Ted Wiley says construction is right on target. To add to the good news, they're projecting more jobs than they thought. “Our intention is to bring over 750 jobs to the area in this first factory, and there's opportunity to expand beyond that if things go well,” Wiley said. State Senator Ryan Weld says there's been a lot of buzz from the community as the factory takes its form. He adds every community needs an anchor, something he believes Form could serve as. “Right now, there's about 1,200 acres here at the Weirton Steel Site. Form Energy is taking 55, so there's still so much room for development downtown,” he said. The government's Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs make over $4 billion in high-risk, non-dilutive capital available to innovative small companies annually. Register now: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_sL1xxx9HQg224sVl7OLKkg #2 – From MARSHALL – Marshall University's Institute for Cyber Security has received $1.75 million from the Bureau of Justice Assistance's Byrne Discretionary Grant Program to establish a Law Enforcement Training Center in Forensic Sciences In partnership with the West Virginia State Police Forensics Laboratory, Mountwest Community and Technical College and West Virginia Intelligence Fusion Center, Marshall will use the funds to build capacity at MU to address the needed training of state and local law enforcement officials in forensic science techniques. The grant extends through March of 2024. “Our law enforcement officers are rarely provided advanced training in solving computer crimes, even as the number of crimes involving technology like smartphones and computers is constantly rising,” said David Dampier, dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Sciences and director of the Institute for Cyber Security, “This grant gives us the opportunity to offer that training for free to law enforcement officers and help them be better prepared for solving these types of crimes.” Read more: https://www.marshall.edu/news/2023/01/31/marshall-receives-1-75-million-to-help-establish-law-enforcement-training-center-in-forensic-sciences/ #3 – From METRO NEWS – Form Energy's cutting-edge battery factory represents a major investment in West Virginia — and also a major investment by West Virginians. The $760 million initial phase on the site of the old Weirton steel mill in Hancock County is expected to produce 750 well-paying jobs. The iron-air battery manufacturing plant is financed by millions of dollars of private investments, but there are also millions of public dollars going toward the project. The West Virginia Economic Development Authority voted to allocate $75 million toward the purchase of land and the construction of buildings in Weirton. Another $215 million in allocations by the Legislature are also anticipated for the project. The deal means West Virginia will own the building and land, and Form Energy will lease it back. The property would transfer to Form no sooner than five years and only if the company employs 750 workers. The deal calls for workers making at least $63,000 a year in average salary. Form Energy expects to start construction of its Weirton factory in 2023 and begin manufacturing iron-air battery systems in 2024 for broad commercialization.
