Over the last decade, election campaigns in India have undergone a dramatic shift. Political parties increasingly rely on political consulting firms, tech-savvy volunteers, pollsters, data-driven insights, and online battles to mobilize voters. But what exactly is driving these changes in the landscape of electioneering? The Backstage of Democracy: India's Election Campaigns and the People Who Manage Them is a new book by the scholar Amogh Dhar Sharma which tries to locate answers to this question. The book takes readers behind the scenes, where they are introduced to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IT cell workers, campaign consultants, data strategists and backroom politicians.Amogh is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the  Department of International Development at the University of Oxford. His research explores the interface between politics and technology, political communication, and histories of science and technology.Amogh joins Milan on the show this week to discuss the professionalization of politics in India, how the middle class relates to politics, and the BJP's unexpected embrace of digital technology. Plus, the two discuss enigmatic backroom strategist Prashant Kishor and the rise of political consultants.Episode notes:1. THIS PODCAST analyses the civilisational consequences of the recently concluded 2024 general elections in India. The outcome of this election was a steep decline in the seats won by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a marked increase in those won by the combined INDI alliance led by the Congress party. While Narendra Modi returns to power as Prime Minister in a historical hatrick, there are deeper and significant issues. The political opposition to the BJP has gained in some strength, which poses a renewed threat to the very survival of the Hindu civilisation, which has already been besieged by hostile forces for more than a millennium. What you will listen to in this episode is a unique election analysis since it examines the results from a civilisational and not a purely electoral perspective. The discussion is imbued with rich insights and rare anecdotes drawn from the Sanatana civilisation and how they all connect to current affairs. Join the Conversation! After India's marathon election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is claiming victory with a historic third successive term. Modi has been criticised throughout the election campaign for abusing state press and broadcast media. There was also the case of the jailed opposition figures and the alleged suppression of the Muslim vote. When he was first elected in 2014, Modi's central mantra was "identity is nationality, not religion". Modi enters a third term with his BJP party firmly tethered to a political course called Hindu nationalism. Minorities – Muslims, Christians and Sikh separatists – all have reasons not to be optimistic about what's to come with Modi's third term. Our panel assess the election and look ahead to where Modi could take India next. On foreign policy issues - Pakistan, Kashmir, China, Russia and Ukraine - where will New Delhi stand? Produced by Alessandro Xenos, Rebecca Gnignati and Juliette Brown.

As India votes in the general election, it is impossible to avoid the wealth of AI-generated content being created - from campaign videos, to personalised audio messages in a range of Indian languages, and even automated calls made to voters in a candidate's voice.Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also already made the best of the emerging technology to campaign effectively - addressing an audience in Hindi which, by using the government-created AI tool Bhashini, was then translated into Tamil in real time. But as the tools get more sophisticated, experts worry about its implications when it comes to making fake news appear real. In April, two viral videos showed Bollywood stars Ranveer Singh and Aamir Khan campaigning for the opposition Congress party. Both filed police complaints saying these were deepfakes, made without their consent. The BBC's Meryl Sebastian, who is based in Kochi in southern India, explains how the election is playing out amidst the wave of AI and deepfake content.Plus we get advice on how to deal with AI and deepfake material as a voter from Divyendra Jadoun, founder of The Indian Deepfaker, who creates this exact content.Instagram: @bbcwhatintheworld WhatsApp: +44 0330 12 33 22 6 Email: whatintheworld@bbc.co.uk Presenter: William Lee Adams Producers: Julia Ross-Roy, Josh Jenkins and Adam Chowdhury Editor: Verity Wilde

India's mammoth elections are now under way, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi widely expected to win a third term. Since coming to power in 2014, Modi has expanded subsidy programmes for the poor and women. These programmes include measures like equipping homes with butane gas by offering free cylinders or distributing free food rations. Some 60 percent of the population benefits from Modi's food distribution scheme, which he has pledged to renew for another five years. Another success story is the nationwide rollout of digital payment services. Meanwhile, critics say the prime minister is eroding democracy by targeting opposition parties and controlling the media. Our correspondents report.

New era for India? Modi consecrates Ayodhya temple on site of former mosque

India's prime minister calls it a "new era". Narendra Modi has consecrated the Ayodhya temple in the nation's most populous state of Uttar Pradesh, fulfilling a decades-old promise to build a proper shrine to the Hindu deity Ram on the site where a Moghul-era mosque was torn down by Hindu nationalists in 1992. That destruction sparked deadly riots that killed some 2,000 people, mainly Muslims. Are we witnessing a turning point for secularism in the world's largest democracy? The ceremony is viewed by many as the unofficial kick-off of the campaign by Modi's BJP in its quest for a third term in power. How much will identity politics matter during the five weeks of voting that kick off across the country in April?More broadly, in an India where growth is soaring, where technology now reaches the most remote village, but where nearly two-thirds of citizens still live outside cities, how are values evolving?Produced by Alessandro Xenos, Rebecca Gnignati and Imen Mellaz.
