This week, we're taking a short drive from the neo-noir world of Neptune to the dark, vampire-infested corners of Sunnydale as we dive into the two-part premiere of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Join Jodie and Andrea as we meet Buffy Summers, the high school teen who just happens to be a demon-slaying superhero. We'll explore Buffy's battle to juggle her slayer duties with typical teenage chaos, unpacking why giving the literal halls of 90210's Beverly Hills High a coat of supernatural paint is so compelling. We'll discuss what makes these characters so immediately likable despite the sometimes clunky dialogue, delight in Giles' overt Britishness, and marvel at Willow Rosenberg's debatably impressive computer hacking skills. Watch the original unaired Buffy PilotNext week, we say goodbye to Pilot Season, and return to the sacred grounds of the Garden State, as we recap our experience attending Kevin Smith's Vulgarthon. The fact that American Pie was the twentieth-highest-grossing movie of 1999 wouldn't suggest that film was a mammoth hit, but it was. American Pie made back its tiny 11 million dollar budget and then some in its opening weekend. And it went on to gross more than 100 million domestically and 235 million worldwide, making it one of the most profitable movies of the year (an honor obviously belonging to the freakishly budget-to-gross ratio obliteration machine that was The Blair Witch Project). But like 10 Things, it had almost no star power whatsoever. While much of the cast would go on to various levels of fame, the most famous cast member at the time was Alyson Hannigan, who had spent three seasons playing Willow Rosenberg on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, followed by Thomas Ian Nicholas, who had starred in a couple of popular family movies in the 1990s. American Pie was also buoyed by some surprisingly warm critical praise. But do the movie's gross-out humor and depictions of sexual angst still hold up? Find out in this episode, where John and Joey invited Tessa and Nicole from the Doom Generation podcast to talk about what happened that one time in band camp. In our first episode of 2020, we dive in our  first TV show AND a Very Important One at that: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The beloved cult TV series, created by Joss Whedon, ran for seven seasons from 1997 til its finale in 2003. The series' protagonist is the titular Buffy, a teenage girl trying to make sense of high school whilst also grappling with being the Slayer, the latest in a long line of young women chosen by fate to battle against vampires, demons, and other forces of darkness. We're going to be specifically focusing on how witchcraft is presented throughout the whole series, paying special attention to the evolution of the show's main witch, Willow Rosenberg (played by Alyson Hannigan), who over the course of seven seasons transforms from a shy, studious girl into the most powerful witch in the Buffyverse. Anna is joined by podcaster and Buffy connoisseur Becky Darke to discuss magic crack dens, magic as a metaphor for female sexuality, the balance of power, and the very few warlocks presented throughout the show. *** To coincide with our season of films and events, Here Be Witches, we will be focusing this first series on exploring all things witchcraft on film. Each episode, we will dive deep into films and TV shows that we can't necessarily screen. Each episode, we'll be joined with special guests to dissect and discuss a film or show, its legacy and the way witches are represented. When Sunnydale's resident black magic hacker and Hogwarts' most accomplished arcane student both find themselves needing to track down the same spell, an eldritch confrontation between the two most fanfic'd witches of all time becomes inevitable! Forced to lead the Scooby Gang in their fight against the First Evil now that the Slayer, Buffy Summers, has mysteriously vanished (hopefully not with the intention of joining a "league," or some such), Willow Rosenberg finds an incantation that will seal the First Evil away forever. The only problem is, it's located in the long-lost (and apparently not actually destroyed) Library of Alexandria, and Willow will need all her powers of research, not to mention witchcraft, in order to acquire it. Actually, that's not her only problem. Her other problem is that across the Atlantic, Hermione Granger got tired of camping in the rain and waiting for Harry Potter, also known as The Boy Who Sulked, to come up with a plan to defeat Lord Voldemort. After managing to infiltrate the Hogwarts library, Hermione discovered the same spell and its location, and is fast at work using her magical abilities to go after it herself. When the two witches meet in the whispering halls of history's greatest library, who will make it out with the spell they need to vanquish their respective enemies? Which team of advocates will come out on top in the soon-to-be-legendary "Dark Willow Argument"? Who will take this week's unorthodox Lightning Round and somehow manage to make it sexy? (hint: not who you think) And what stygian, tenebrous horrors will we unleash on the world by bringing in Kris and Katrina of the Gameable Podcast for a non-Disney related episode?
