These relationships can help you condense your processes and reduce the time needed to take someone from inquiry to signed contract.My Fee Proposal Process BreakdownI walk through my exact process for handling inquiries:Step 1: Initial Contact• Send an introductory email with your studio portfolio• Schedule a brief call to discuss their projectStep 2: Process Document• Share a document explaining your design process• Set clear expectations about how you workStep 3: Project Discussion• Have a more detailed conversation about their specific needs• Gather the information needed for your fee proposalStep 4: Fee Proposal• Create and send your proposal promptly• Schedule a follow-up call to discuss any questionsStep 5: Follow-Up• Address any concerns or objections• Establish when they'll make their decisionThis whole process takes about half an hour. I am not spending hours creating new documents to send to them. I am clear and confident on the information that I am sending to the client.The Value of a Studio PortfolioYour studio portfolio should do more than showcase pretty pictures—it should explain your process and set expectations.You are already showing these potential clients that you are an authority in the space, you are going to bring value to their project, and you are a person that will make their life easier.When You Don't Get the ProjectNot every proposal will convert to a signed client, and that's okay. Historic employee turnover continues to plague businesses operating in the supply chain. WorkStep's looks at the top factors contributing to employee dissatisfaction, as well as other key themes: The Great Resignation is far from over. Aside from more than three-quarters of respondents saying they plan to explore a new role, the data also found: 46% have been in their current roles for less than one year 54% have switched jobs in the past year Despite record high turnover, management teams rarely, if ever, ask for feedback from their frontline supply chain workforce. 41% of respondents said management never seeks feedback 8% say they're asked to provide feedback once a year For the employees that get to provide feedback, 70% say their voices aren't being heard. We knew that Dan Johnston, CEO of WorkStep had a great story about how they've shifted the go-to-market strategy as they've expanded post series B--especially for B2B SaaS marketers that have had to make the case for patience.That's in here, but the overall story is much bigger than that.Having started managing a third-party logistics warehouse that imported trampolines, Johnston noticed something unsettling. It was staffed primarily with temp workers fraught with hidden costs. Not only is there constant turnover and constant training, but there's also a detrimental human impact. Workers can't move up in the organization and lose $5-$6 per hour in the spread.People shouldn't be treated as cogs in a machine. They have valuable skills that are critical to the success of an organization. They're talent. That was the problem to solve. Starting small, WorkStep limited itself to Portland, Oregon where they provided software solutions that make it easy to directly employ frontline workers for their supply chain roles.Starting small also gave them a big opportunity to learn about what their customers and their employees really need—to reduce turnover at scale.Recently, WorkStep wrapped up a $25-million Series B fundraise to add fuel to what's already working, and the best part is that the entire ecosystem wins.

Highlights “The shortage of these frontline workers is a real thing and it's reached critical mass.” [2:27] Marcel opens by discussing how important frontline workers are – and why today's conversation is more relevant than ever. “At WorkStep, we help large companies better hire and, most critically, retain the frontline workforce across their supply chain. We empower companies with software that helps them source better fit hires and help them understand why their employees are leaving, what they can do about it, and how they can measure the impact of those initiatives… It's a win for both sides,” [9:51] says Dan, discussing the role of his company WorkStep. “The top driver of turnover is career growth. Those employees who don't feel like their company is investing in them in the same way they are investing in the company, who don't feel there are opportunities to grow their skills, grow their wages, and grow their careers within an organization, are the employees who are most likely to quit. Those workers who are most aligned to that growth pathway are most likely to stay,” [13:25] Dan says. According to WorkStep research, the desire for career growth is the number one driver of employee turnover. “What's interesting about those findings is that the pay is important now, but it wasn't the top factor.”[16:09] Marcel points out that pay, while important, isn't the leading cause of turnover. “What tends to drive people to quit is when things are different than what they expected.”[18:33] Dan remarks that problems arise when employees encounter unforeseen issues in new roles.  “Especially when we're talking about the frontline industries, with very high turnover, that new hire period is going to be very critical. Many organizations lose half of their new employees during those first 90 days.” [28:55] Dan points this out to discuss how leaders should focus on the new hire period.  “Whether you buy from WorkStep or not, ensure that you're listening to the voice of your frontline associates, analyzing what they're saying objectively (and ideally, in real-time), and acting on the true drivers of turnover.”[34:40] Dan recognizes that this is the singular strategy for fighting turnover.  “We want our workers to succeed, even to the extent that we may lose them to a competitor. But while they're under our care, we're gonna do whatever it takes to empower the heck out of them. It makes business sense because if we are empowering them, and loving them well, and caring for their needs, of course, there's gonna be a higher return on their energy and of course productivity,” [37:20] Marcel says, pointing to the importance of nurturing talent. “You can save money on turnover… But it's also the right thing to do. Driver recruitement and retention were a big issue in 2021. It is likely to be no different in 2022.Dan Johnston, co-founder and CEO of WorkStep, joins host John Kingston on the Drilling Deep podcast to discuss his company's software-based approach to recruitment and retention.
