“Their revenue growth is stalling. Their cost of mistakes is going up, and everything is stalling and slowing and getting harder.” For most people that doesn't sound like a job opportunity with much appeal, but it's the point where Tommi Forsstrom usually joins a startup. Tommi is a product management executive who specializes in helping companies navigate “the growth stage,” that adolescent era of startup development where a company has found product-market fit and needs to scale – and to do that they need to make some hard choices. On this episode, Tommi walks us through the awkward years just after a startup becomes a scale-up, and breaks down how he shepherds a company to the next level. Tommi will share his framework with us, how hard it is to “shove rabbits back into hats” and kill products, and the tough choices he made as VP of Product at Teachable. Plus, how he's building software to help frontline workers as Chief Product Officer at Workstep. We also hear how Tommi approaches career growth, with practical tips for job seekers. This is Crafted from Artium: a show about great products, and the people who make them. At Artium, we help startups and enterprises build incredible products, recruit high-performing teams, and achieve the culture of craft they need to build great software long after we're gone. How would you do your job differently if you had nothing to lose? Would you take more chances? Would you be bolder? You'd definitely feel freer. The question is, what would you do with that freedom? For me, this isn't a hypothetical question. I was in that situation. It was a while ago, and I haven't written about it much until now. This experience shaped me, and I'd like to share it with you today. The setup I was leading... All right, a little fun one for you. Today somebody asked me on Instagram about quitting their job. They were kind of scared. I think I made up one response to this, but this is like the second part of that message and they were saying about they have this job they hate, they want to leave, but the dont know how to quit. They have savings and they feel confident they can change. You know, build their own business and stuff, but they just don't know how to actually physically leave the job, like actually what to say to quit the job. They've maybe built-up friends, colleagues, they have like a good relationship with the boss. All right. So it's actually very simple and it's almost quite funny.
Juda Englemayer is the crisis communications expert who takes on a lot of taboo clients that many people won't touch. You have heard their famous names in the media. They are controversial and, dare we say, “unsavory” (our host says it for us) individuals. Juda doesn't take these well-known, shunned people on as clients willy nilly; he sits down with a lawyer and with his intuition first to see if he should manage their reputations. He talks about the public aspect, SEO and the different mediums he must keep an eye out for in terms of coverage and what it's like to work with those who've been canceled and blacklisted. How does standard PR differ from “reputation management?” And how did Juda come to represent all these big names known to be in hot water? What can other PR professionals learn from Juda's desire to help the underdog? Also, how does he keep his “normal” clients happy while representing the ones many would never touch? We hear his responses to these many questions, and he discusses his background and trajectory from PR pro to reputation manager. Most importantly, we get the answer to why a nice guy like him is in an industry that's not known for nice guys.
Do you dread the sound of your alarm clock? Do you hate waking up and going to your job? Even if you're making 6-figures you can still be a multi-miserable-aire. That's what Brian & Lynette slowly realized, THEY HATED THEIR JOBS. Deep inside Brian felt he was making good money, but had no freedom. Lynette was the top sales rep in the nation, but she felt like she was missing her childrens' childhood. Working late nights, weekends, and holidays took its toll on both of them. But Brian wasn't working as a night security guard anymore. He was a very well paid manager at a mortgage company. He had a beautiful wife (Lynette) and kids, with a gorgeous house in Arizona. From the outside looking in The Wolffs WERE the Joneses, and they were successful by every measure. Except the most important one, happiness. So Brian started studying real estate investing at nights, to see if it would actually deliver the income he needed to support his family with the freedom to actually be in their lives. Lynette wasn't convinced at first, mostly because they both had high-paying jobs and children to support. So how do you deal with a spouse who isn't fully on board with your new plan? Brian thought he'd just surprise Lynette by making a huge life decision without her knowing! Luckily Lynette was overjoyed that Brian was being so spontaneous, brave, and INSANE! She was PISSED!

Create a vision for what your next steps will look like whether that may be starting a business or starting a new job. Make sure you have a clear picture as to what your immediate future (1-6 months) will look like. Step 2: Get Your finances in Order. Quitting your job without another job lined up only sounds good if you have enough money saved and/or financial support from friends, family, significant others…etc. to keep the lights on while you're in between jobs. Make sure you know where your next mortgage/rent payment is coming from BEFORE you quit your job. You may also want to have a plan for how to continue certain benefits like health/medical/dental insurance without a job. Step 3: Take Some Time to Reflect. Have a clear understanding of what you liked or didn't like in your previous role. You want to make sure your new role or career move looks different than the one you just left. Otherwise, you may be leaving a bad situation for an even worse situation. Step 4: Read the Company Rule Book. Generally, a company may have a right to claim ownership over any work that you create while you're at work even if you're creating it for yourself or your side hustle. Make sure you're following the rules so that you don't have any issues on your way out. Step 5: Take Some Time Off. You may need to refer to Step 2 to determine just how much time you can take off in between gigs. However, take off as much time as your spirit and budget will allow. It's important to take time to re-center and rejuvenate your mind and body before starting something new. Step 6: Cultivate a Support System. Support of friends and family or even a therapist is super important to successfully navigating big life transitions. Make sure you choose your community wisely. Are you one of those people who love to secretly fantasise how one day you'll hand in your resignation letter to your boss and proudly walk out of the room? I know it has definitely been me in the past and in this episode I'm sharing my advice on how to prepare for the inevitable career change.First tip - I invite you to NOT rush to dramatically hand in that resignation just yet.I cover strategies to take on way ahead of your planned quitting date and I share the most important aspects for you to work out before you even inform anyone (even your closest colleagues!) about your leaving. While in this podcast I do not usually talk about the strategies - I'm a believer that the tangibles of career change are just one-tenth of all the work a full-blown career change will entail - I'm not oblivious to the fact that we need to have a basic understanding of how to make the most out of your resignation. That is exactly what this episode is about - how to quit your job like a boss.***Schedule your first call to take this work further:https://calendly.com/coachvilmausaite/60min***Instagram:@vilma.usaite

One of the biggest challenges that we face as freelancers is that we are on a constant hunt for a gig. Over an over again we go through the process of completing jobs then looking for our next. Though this is just a fact our our profession, but it sometimes causes us to not treat every jobs "application" with the same enthusiasm depending on the price you'll be paid. That is killing your business, let me tell you why.

We often get ourselves caught up in doing things with the hope that we will get some result out of it. It’s the basis for the expression “It’s a means to an end”. The means are the things you have to do to achieve some end. But what happens when you the end doesn’t happen? And what would you want to waste any of your life doing something in the hopes that something will happen? Shouldn’t it be good enough to do great work, or to get to know someone without intending to leverage that relationship for something?
