Like so many second and third wave grunge bands, aka post-grunge, the opportunity for chart and sales success depended on a big hit. For Atlanta, Georgia's doubleDrive, they didn't manage to score the big radio or MTV single in 1999 with their debut album 1000 Yard Stare, but what they produced was something more interesting than what many of their contemporaries had to offer. The production gives the entire band a chance to shine, and the twin guitar attack gets closer to the post-hardcore of Helmet, Quicksand, and Handsome at times. Unlike their post-grunge contemporaries Puddle of Mudd or Creed, the band doesn't slog around the mid-tempo for long, injecting plenty of energy and avoiding a ballad completely. But also like their post-grunge contemporaries, a reliance on the vocal stylings of singers like Eddie Vedder and Scott Weiland put a stamp on the sound that chips away at the originality. We checked in with Matt, Tony, Chris, and Scott of 1000 Yard Stare. Joining us were fans Stew, Erocka, and Nick. However, it should be noted that we weren't quite sure if Erocka was just hanging out or perhaps lurking. 1000 Yard Stare are back in action after the long pandemic winter. With new drummer Chris, they are feeling good about creating new music and getting back out to performing shows. We talked about the sound of 1000 Yard Stare. In particular, we attempted to define the experience that the band would like listeners to have. This brought us around to how the band crafts music. We had a great chat regarding who everyone would enjoy hanging out while sharing a beverage. Dave Grohl please get in touch with Chuck. As usual, we touched on our favorite topics including first records and pizza toppings. Sit back, grab your favorite beverage and check out this super fun conversation with 1000 Yard Stare. 1000 Yard Stare Links Check out 1000 Yard Stare music Follow 1000 Yard Stare on Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube Fans With Bands Links Subscribe to Fans With Bands on your favorite podcast service such as Apple, Google, Youtube, Spotify, iHeartRadio, Audible, Amazon Music or Stitcher. COVID. Wildfires in the west. Hurricanes in the Gulf and storms in the East. A women's right to choose under siege. A corrupted justice system. Economic inequality. Racial division. Democracy in the ICU. Any one of these crises would be a challenge for a generation. We face them all at once. The result is something like "the 2000 yard stare," the sign of a battle worn soldier unable to fight. But we must fight. The question is how. We discuss all this on a vitally important special edition of the podcast with guests Norm Ornstein of AEI, best-selling author and therapist Mary L. This episode is obviously rooted firmly in our Should Have Been category. Each of these bands came up through the local Atlanta scene in the mid-to-late 90s, when some rock critics and magazines had predicted that Atlanta would be the next “Seattle” with a hot-bed of talented alternative rock and metal bands. These 3 bands got signed, put out some fantastic albums, and enjoyed some level of mainstream success. We think they SHOULDA BEEN HUGE!!! We hope we either re-introduce you to these bands or turn you on to something new!Songs this week include:Injected – “Bullet” from Burn It Black(2002)Injected – “Death Ray” from The Truth About You (2017)Injected – “Westworld” from The Truth About You Sessions (2006)doubleDrive – “Sacrifice” from 1,000 Yard Stare (1999)doubleDrive - “11:59” from Blue In The Face (2003)Marvelous 3 – “Valium” from Math And Other Problems (1997)Marvelous 3 – “#27” from Hey!Album (1999)Marvelous 3 – “Radio Tokyo” from ReadySexGo (2000)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert’s amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you’d like to check out Kevin’s band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin’s band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

We talk about some strange WWII stories on this show. Tony Wright, who is the singer of 1000 Yard Stare, the band that Scott L. also plays in, joined us on the show. We may have discovered a new way of reading the news. We also recap "Bonnie's Week." Featured music for this show by Tony and Scott L’s band 1000 Yard Stare. The tune is called “Demons”. After the attack on the Naval Base at Pearl Harbor in 1941, America declared war on Japan. In this episode, Laurel native, Doris Barwick recalls how their community responded. Young men, some not even out of high school, volunteered for service by the thousands and soon found themselves on the front lines in Europe and the Pacific. As a result of intense fighting during WWII and later the Korean Conflict, many of these soldiers suffered from battle fatigue, known today as PTSD, for years afterwards. To treat the lingering effects of PTSD, they often turned to alcohol. Doris Barwick remembers her husband’s frequent nightmares and describes how he overcame his addiction. After getting sober himself, Jim Barwick became a drug and alcohol counselor and spent his remaining seventeen years helping others. Image: 2,000 Yard Stare by Thomas Lea, c 1944 Life Magazine
