The inspiration for this week's mixtape is down to correspondence with John Matthews, a person whose musical knowledge and taste I trust more than most. The inclusion of Fat White Family remixed by Arab Acid? That was John. Also while listening to the Face Radio this week- on The London Hippy I heard Barcelona duo Magik Brother & Mystic Sister, and on The Free Design a song by Chapterhouse - and they sounded so great, I was inspired to play different tracks by these bands. As spring turns to summer and the flowers bloom, it's a mixtape full of dream pop, shoegaze and psychedelic folk, sounds to drift away in a field of flowers. Get the earbuds on and walk the dog, or just listen.Music; Yellowman, Big Audio Dynamite, Magik Brother & Mystic Sister, The Cure, Chapterhouse, Fat White Family, Acid Arib, Spiritualized and loads more. Brining out some classic late 80's 12” remixes that seem like a fun summer kick off, also a Pistol Disco on the Hoga Nord label out of season, I should be playing an artist from that label every week as it's just the kin d of music I want to showcase here. Big Audio Dynamite was a band formed from the slowly drifting ashes of The Clash. The Clash would last a little longer, but would never be the same. Co-founder Mick Jones had just been kicked out of The Clash for wanting to move the punk pioneers in new directions and into new sounds. Less than a year later, Jones quickly regrouped with Big Audio Dynamite. Big Audio Dynamite was confrontational like The Clash, but in a different way—exploring new directions like melding dance with rock and liberally sampling sounds and movie clips as part of the band's palette. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/albumsthatsaveduspodcast/message

Greg Roberts in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.dreadzone.com/ He was a member of Big Audio Dynamite from 1984 to 1990, a band led by , former lead guitarist, and co-lead vocalist of the Clash. He went on to form Screaming Target in 1991 with ex-Big Audio Dynamite members Don Letts and Leo "E-Zee Kill" Williams, then started Dreadzone with Tim Bran, Williams and Dan Donovan, another former Big Audio Dynamite member. Dreadzone had a No. 20 hit in the with "Little Britain" in 1996. Dreadzone are an unstoppable force who have long been, and still are, one of the best live bands around with a loyal and ever growing fanbase due in part to their storming and energetic live shows. They have been releasing albums and progressively bettering, refining and perfecting their own unique and inimitable take on dub since their inception in 1993.

The Specials - Punky Reggae Party Bob Marley- Public Image PIL- London Calling The Clash- Civilization Don Letts (feat. My guest in this episode is friend and colleague Mike Palmer. A Middlesborough lad, Mike moved to Manchester in 1984 to study Computing at UMIST where his degree supervisor was Bernard Richards, one of Alan Turing's last students. Mike has never left the Northwest and he and his family have become committed ‘Mancophiles', not least because of the great environment the city provides for music and the arts.Mike is a passionate music lover but it's words that really impact him and as per the title of the episode on occasions make him cry. Similarly, recorded music is great but for him it's all about the live performance. He inherited this love from his parents (who met Ella Fitzgerald!) and he and his wife Gerri have passed that on to his two daughters Emily and Anna.Consequently, each of his song choices are from bands he has seen live. Mike has a wealth of great stories including: · The Clash at Manchester Apollo in 1981· Bowie at Murrayfield in 1983 on the Let's Dance Tour · The Smiths at Middlesborough Town Hall Crypt in 1984· Chatting with Michael Stipe at Leeds Warehouse in 1984 · Asking Don Letts to move out of his seat at a Big Audio Dynamite gig in 1986· Radiohead at Glastonbury in 1997· The XX at a secret venue under Victoria Station with 60 people in 2013· The joy of attending Green Man every year with about 20 family and friendsMike's song choices are: 70's (White Man) in Hammersmith Palais The Clash80's New England Billy Bragg90's Fake Plastic Trees Radiohead00's One Day Like This Elbow10's Make Me Feel Janelle Monae 20's The 345 Self Esteem If you would like to be on the show then please contact me at musictalkspod@outlook.com Please follow and like Music Talks on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/musictalkspod . Part one of our two-part celebration of RSD Black Friday (November 25) focuses on the late Joe Strummer (1952-2002) and his world. Joe's surviving life partner Lucinda Tait remembers life with Joe during the time of his last band The Mescaleros, and discusses the expansive Joe Strummer 002: The Mescaleros Years recently released on the Dark Horse Records label. Joe's friend, filmmaker Don Letts talks about Joe, forming Big Audio Dynamite (B.A.D.) with Mick Jones, and the new documentary about Letts' life, Rebel Dread. Terry Currier from Music Millennium in Portland, Oregon, returns to the show to remember the 1999 instore concert that is at the heart of this year's RSD Black Friday limited edition vinyl release, Joe Strummer - Live At Music Millennium. Comedian and drummer Fred Armisen pops in to tell us about the time he met Joe and The Clash. Plus our regular check-in with RSD's Carrie Colliton remembers Public Image Ltd's Keith Levene (also a founding member of The Clash!) In episode 3 of Accolades we talk to Don Letts about Jeannette Lee, a British music record executive, music manager, filmmaker, and former musician. A retail worker at the Acme Attractions store that, along with the SEX boutique run by Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood, was instrumental in spawning punk in the UK. She went on to become a member of the post-punk band Public Image Ltd (PiL). Lee is currently co-owner of the independent record label Rough Trade Records. First off R.I.P. David Freel. You are missed good sir. Thanks for all you've given this world. I've got some good things going for me folks. I sold this book off finally. I discuss it some here. In addition, I saw one of the best films I've ever seen in my life. I discuss that more after the break. I've picked up a few new records and I really dig them. Pics of them (and much much more) right here. This is Big Audio Dynamite is a real find. I wasn't planning on it, but there it is. Record Store Day is this Saturday morning and I will be there. It got bumped from June up early, but that's not gonna stop me from at least getting Childish Gambino - Kauai and Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells II. I love both of those albums a lot and can't wait to share them with my family. Everything, Everywhere, All at Once is a masterpiece in my opinion. Some might not feel the same, but it's one of those films that just plain spoke right to me. I love it and I go on and on about it in the episode. We're loving watching Halo, Moon Knight, and interested in Outer Range as well. Not really reading enough at the moment. Oh well. Loving the podcasts Dead Eyes and Mr. Ballen Podcast. Go forth and listen my children. Copyright stuff about the Swell tunes here... It's been a rough two years, to say the least. Music is one of the few things keeping us together, and for some of us, The Clash have been doing the heavy lifting. In this unique episode, Tony from the Pug joins me for an enthralling conversation about music, the Clash, and so much more. The general theme of this conversation is as follows: What Big Audio Dynamite/Joe Strummer solo songs would've been great Clash songs? We tried to put in some ground rules, but those quickly went out the door. Aside from the Clash we talk about Poguetry, go-go music, cow punk, ska, and you name it. So rather than sum it up, it's better if you just listen in. And join us online for an ongoing conversation! What songs would you pick? Ping us on Twitter--@thepugdc & @forsongs2!
Question for you: If you had the chance to spend an hour in the car with one of your musical heroes—you are driving—what music would you play? Believe it or not, this is a difficult, stressful decision. And my next guest, northwest London-based Emily Capell (https://www.emilycapell.co.uk/), faced this very dilemma. Emily, who literally grew up on the Clash and its various offshoots, is an old soul. Her music is inspired by, well, the Clash, Big Audio Dynamite, but it goes beyond that. You'll hear some Sinatra, you'll hear some ‘60s doowop, you'll hear a lot of ska, Blondie, you name it. In this exhilarating interview, Emily and I talk about two songs from her 2019 debut album Combat Frock—Bonanza and Ipso Calypso—and then we talk about two newer songs, 2020's Flamingo, recorded with the London-based Dreadzone (https://www.dreadzone.com/), and a cover of Big Audio Dynamite's E=MC2, recorded with the song's co-writer, legendary punk-rock DJ and studio innovator Don Letts. We discuss what it was like to record with Letts, one of her heroes, and the troubles and trials of being a musician in a pandemic. Mostly, though, we talk about the music. Emily is one of the freshest talents recording today, so go grab your beer, sit down, and welcome Emily Capell to For Songs.

A different take on the invasion of Ukraine- for once we miss that good old fashioned war coverage cable news was made for. The first "smartphone" war. Featuring musical selections by The Beatles, Big Audio Dynamite, and Ozzy Osbourne.
Making commercially successful funky dance pop music amid Britpop's reign may have only been possible via Shaun Ryder. The then ex-Happy Monday hooked up with producer Danny Saber and a group of new cohorts to produce 1995's debut album by Black Grape, It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah. Mixing the big beats of Big Audio Dynamite with touches of ascendent electronic music like trip-hop, while still dipping a toe in the Madchester scene, there's plenty going as slide guitars and sitars brush up against funk basslines and saxophone solos. It's not entirely successful, but Ryder and Co. manage to push the best material to the limits and create a truly unique sound for the middle of the decade. Yabba Dabba Doo! We couldn't let the summer end without covering a ridiculous summer blockbuster, and The Flintstones is most certainly that. The Steven Spielberg-produced, live-action adaptation of the 60s cartoon has to be seen to be believed. It's got gaudy caveman sets and costumes, John Goodman hamming it up as Fred Flintstone, and a wild soundtrack... Good lord, the soundtrack. One half of this album features awkward attempts at caveman humor by the likes of The B(C)-52s, Big Audio Dynamite, and Us3. The other half is a bizarre collection of Flintstones novelty songs that predate the movie. And most of the tracks on this album feature artists or songs we've covered on this show already, including return appearances from Weird Al Yankovic and My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. But there are definitely a few gems in here, so join us as we rock out to The Flintstones! SHOW NOTES: The Flintstones is available to stream here GQ: "Lord Forgive Me: The Life of Urban Looney Tunes" INTRO/OUTRO: "Meet the Flintstones" by The B-52s MUSIC VIDEOS: "Meet the Flintstones" by The B(C)-52s "I Wanna Be a Flintstone" by Screaming Blue Messiahs "Walk the Dinosaur" by Was (Not Was) "Anarchy in the UK" by Green Jelly "Bedrock Anthem" by Weird Al Yankovic Have a soundtrack you'd like us to cover? We return after numerous home studio difficulties with a new episode featuring two albums that couldn't be farther apart. First there's Promenade, Neil Hannon's extremely mannered followup to the Divine Comedy's break out album, Liberation. Then there's the second coming of Mick Jones' post-Clash dance rock band, Big Audio Dynamite. The Globe is a fun snapshot of early '90s British rave culture, and we'll answer the question of just how much TB-303 filter knobs were abused in its creation (the answer might surprise you!). On Sunday August 1st we went along to our favourite record store Sounds of The Suburbs in Ruislip to see Gary Crowley, the legendary DJ, TV and Radio show presenter, A&R man, schoolboy music journalist and former receptionist at the NME - give a talk and Q&A session to promote his excellent new compilation "Lost 80's Volume 2: 1980-1986". This has just been released via Demon Records as a beautifully packaged 65 track 4 CD deluxe edition all housed in a hardback cover including a lavishly illustrated booklet packed full of photos, notes and background information. The tracklist itself features an eclectic mix of hidden gems and unusual choices from some familiar and not-so familiar names. Gary's picks certainly highlight the diverse musical styles that made the early to mid-80's such an exciting time - from Post-Punk, jangly Indie-Pop, Ska and Reggae, Jazz and Soul to Rap and Electronica - this compilation covers all the bases. So, in the discussion you're about to hear, which was introduced by singer-songwriter John Donegan, Gary not only talks about the compilation itself but we were also treated to a thoroughly entertaining romp through his life in music. Along the way we find out who he interviewed for his school magazine (wearing his school uniform), which soon-to-be pop star he had a secret crush on, who were the nicest stars he's interviewed (and the worse...), who he wished he'd seen play live, why The Jam just shaded The Clash as his favourite band and why he dreams of a fifth ginger Beatle! To compliment the chat, the Podcast features clips of great music from Big Audio Dynamite, Altered Images, Style Council, Theatre of Hate, Working Week, Bananarama, Paul Blake & Blood Fire Posse and Leisure Process. Check out Retro Man Blog at the following link https://retroman65.blogspot.com/2021/08/retrosonic-podcast-gary-crowley-lost.html for photos of the event, links to Sounds of The Suburbs Records and more.
