In Episode 112, it's time for another instalment of our unofficial graphic novel book club — this time with Fatale by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. We cover volumes 1 & 2 (with little sneak peeks at volumes 3–5) of this supernatural noir thriller from one of the most celebrated duos in graphic novels today. Show Notes Ed Brubaker has won a whopping 7 Eisner Awards for his work, which includes Batman, Catwoman, Winter Soldier, Criminal, Incognito, and Reckless among many others. Sean Phillips' son also works in graphic novels and has actually done some of the colouring for Phillips' work. We loved diving into all these different decades and getting a bit more of Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythology (even if we still can't pronounce it). For more graphic novel goodness, check out our episodes on Shade, the Changing Girl, The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, Fun Home , and Something is Killing the Children. And listen to our interviews with Stephanie Cooke, and with husband and wife duo Brenda Hickey and Troy Little of Pegamoose Press. In our next episode we'll be talking about Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin. Other Books by Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips Reckless Criminal Incognito Fatale The Fade Out Kill or Be Killed My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies

Look alive, Sunshine! It's time for another Book Club episode. Gen and Jette discuss The True Live of the Fabulous Killjoys: California by Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, and Becky Cloonan. It's a great conversation about storytelling, graphic novels, and dystopian aesthetics. Show notes: Killjoys may have begun as an idea for a comic book series, but it first came to life on My Chemical Romance's album Danger Days. The graphic novel picks up where that story leaves off. Watch the music videos for "Na Na Na" and "SING" for more Killjoys content and to see the where the aesthetic of the comic was born. The sequel to Killjoys: California is available in a collected edition called The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: National Anthem. We came up with about five different essays we could write based on this book and had a great discussion about the use of colour. Gerard Way was cofounder of the DC imprint Young Animal, but both Killjoys and Umbrella Academy were published by Dark Horse Comics. For more graphic novel goodness, listen to Episode 21 where we discuss Shade, the Changing Girl by Cecil Castellucci. Our next book club book is Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney. Angela and Harley chat with Eisner Award nominated writer Cecil Castellucci (Plain Janes, Batgirl, Shade the Changing Girl) about comics, art and what it is like being the only woman in the room.
Award-winning and New York Times Bestselling writer Cecil Castellucci has crafted comics (Shade, The Changing Girl, Batgirl), graphic novels (Soupy Leaves Home, The Plain Janes), Young Adult novels, and many more books. Castellucci talks about how she's staying creative during this quarantine period, and recommends some must-read books.
Gen and Jette talk about Shade, The Changing Girl - a collection of comics on DC's Young Animal imprint - about an alien that embodies a teenage girl and all the baggage that they both carry. Show Notes: My Chemical Romance will always be amazing. Jette's funeral will be a recreation of the "My Helena" video. The Umbrella Academy is LIFE - Klaus forever! Doom Patrol is another comic on YA that has been made into a tv show. Cecil Castellucci was in Bite and Nerdy Girl before going solo. Other stories by Cecil are "Boy Proof" and "We Have Always Lived on Mars" - soon to be a movie directed by John Krasinski. Marley Zarcone is the artist behind these comics. Gen and Jette may go on a tangent raging about the "live-action" remakes of the Disney animated films of their childhood. Their opinion is real. Saga is a comic by Fiona Staples and Brian K. Vaughn on Image Comics. Yes - Gen mentions Supernatural and Harry Potter again for anyone who's counting. Shade, the Changing Girl stems from Shade, the Changing Man and also continues in Shade, the Changing Woman.
Writer Cecil Castelluccidiscusses how Jack Kirby’s Fourth World Saga powers her new comics series The Female Furies. Female Furies depicts Big Barda’s own feminist awakening on the hell planet Apocalypse--a world so much like our own. Cecil Castellucciis the award winning and New York Times Bestselling author of books and graphic novels for young adults including Shade, The Changing Girl, Boy Proof, The Plain Janes, Soupy Leaves Home, The Year of the Beasts, Tin Star, and Odd Duck. In 2015 she co-authored Star Wars Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure. She is currently writing The Female Furies with artist Adriana Melo for DC Comics. Welcome to Milk Wars... hope you (and we) survive the experience! A little forewarning... your usually even-keeled hosts, Reggie (@reggiereggie) and Chris (@acecomics) did not enjoy this event... and they're going to spend the next two hours tellin' ya alllllllll about it. Join them as the Young Animal imprint undergoes an unnecessary, unearned, and nonsensical... reboot?! Well, in fairness, they were in existence for an entire year! Oh yeah... It's so hard to say goodbye... and that's exactly what we do during this episode. Two of our Young Animal pals draw to their conclusion this time around. Carry on, Cave... See ya, Shade. It's not a "forever farewell", however... because there's something called "Milk Wars" on the horizon. In addition to sayin' ciao... we actually have a full line up! That almost never happens! Our Young Animal revisit has officially reached "the staples"! That's right, we are halfway through our planned 18-episode look at the pop-up imprint that could! This week... It's really one'a them "Good News, Bad News" situations... ya see, after a few months... we finally get that next issue of Doom Patrol. Thing of it is... it kinda smells like filler. It looks great though... and gives us our Allred-fix, which is a good thing, since Bug! took the month off! In addition to that issue of Doom Patrol, we will be discussing the penultimate issues of Shade and Cave... Mother Panic shows up too! Change is in the air for the plucky pop-up imprint that could (or, could it?). Word on the street is that there's a hiatus on the horizon... of course, using our 2018-vision, we know what that's all about... however, in the Summer of 2017... we hadn't the foggiest idea what this might mean for our Young Animal pals! Greetings, Dangerous Humans! As we are currently in what might just be the final month of DC's Young Animal imprint, your Young and Animalistic hosts, Chris (@acecomics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) thought it might be fun to share with you their initial thoughts on the launch! In this extra-sized (or, over-sized) episode they look at all four "number one" issues. Since the Young Animal launch was staggered from September-November, 2016... there are also a couple of "non-number one" reviews in there as well. Head back with us into the not-so-distant past... and relive some Young Animal memories. Learn just how much we initially hated Mother Panic, and how over the Moon we were with Doom Patrol and Shade the Changing Girl... boy, how that changed! Feel free to follow along at home... let's send the Young Animal imprint into the sunset with a smile. ***Warning: We might be a little bit looser with our language during these episodes -- These segments originally aired during the Weird Science DC Comics Podcast during the Following Episodes: Episode 89 (09.18.2016) - Doom Patrol #1 Episode 92 (10.09.2016) - Shade the Changing Girl #1 Episode 93 (10.16.2016) - Doom Patrol #2 Episode 94 (10.23.2016) - Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye #1 Episode 96 (11.06.2016) - Shade the Changing Girl #2 Episode 97 (11.13.2016) - Doom Patrol #3 and Mother Panic #1 -- You can get a hold of us at weirdcomicshistory@gmail.com -- For our weekly writings check out www.weirdsciencedccomics.com For Chris' daily writings check out www.chrisisoninfiniteearths.com -- Check out www.weirdcomicshistory.blogspot.com for show notes! -- Visit us on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/CosmicTMillHistory and on Twitter @CosmicTMill -- Subscribe to the show on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Play, iHeartRadio... wherever's most convenient! We appreciate your patience, and we didn't wanna leave you hanging this (or any) Sunday morning... and so, for your listening pleasure... something completely different! Over at Weird Science DC Comics, your humble hosts Chris (@acecomics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) host a segment wherein they discuss DC's Young Animal "pop-up" imprint. During episode #100 of the Weird Science DC Comics Podcast (December 4, 2016), having no actual Young Animal books to discuss (sadly, a fairly common occurrence) they thought it would be fun to, not go BACK TO THE PAST... but, instead... INTO THE FUTURE (hey, the Cosmic Treadmill goes both ways!) and discuss the one-hundredth issues of both Doom Patrol, and Shade the Changing Girl. Prescient... is not a word often used to describe Chris or Reggie. We hope you enjoy this bit, and humbly and sincerely apologize for our inability to put out an all-new episode. Though, if you haven't heard this yet... it's new to you! http://weirdcomicshistory.blogspot.com TAGS: Young Animal, DC Comics, 2010's, Special Presentation, Sorry!, Doom Patrol, Gerard Way, Nick Derington, Shade the Changing Girl, Cecil Castellucci, Marley Zarcone TAGS:

A true renaissance woman, Cecil Castellucci's work spans mediums. The New York-born, Montreal-raised writer is currently best known to comic book fans as the writer behind the latest reinterpretation of the late Steve Ditko character Shade – Shade the Changing Girl and now, Shade the Changing Woman as part of DC Comics' Young Animal imprint, spearheaded by Gerard Way – lead singer of My Chemical Romance. Fitting, since Cecil tells us why making comics is like being in a rock band. She would know since she was better known as the lead singer of Nerdy Girl in the early '90s and later as the solo artist Cecil Seaskull. These days, her involvement in music has turned to opera as the librettist behind the comic book themed Les Adventures des Madame Merveille and her latest, Hockey Noir, which recently came to Montreal and Toronto before heading to Europe in October 2018. If that weren't enough, Cecil is a young adult novelist and up for a “Best Short Story” Eisner in 2018 for Ethel Byrne, a short comic inside Mine! -- a comic anthology benefiting Planned Parenthood. You can also find more of her comics writing in the graphic novel Soupy Leaves Home for Dark Horse and Plain Janes for DC's now defunct Minx line. On this episode, Cecil tells Aaron what it was like to fall in love in the line-up for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace and then write about it in the pages of The Secret Loves of Geeks anthology. The two also chat about why the theme of transformation permeates so much of Cecil's work, why for her the creative process is always political and how she is still able to write in the voice of a teenage girl despite the hindsight of adulthood. On today's episode I talk to Cecil Castellucci. Based in Los Angeles, Cecil is the author of books and graphic novels for young adults including Boy Proof, The Plain Janes, Soupy Leaves Home, The Year of the Beasts, Tin Star, and the Eisner nominated Odd Duck. In 2015, she co-authored Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure, and currently is writing Shade, The Changing Woman (formerly Shade, The Changing Girl), an ongoing comic on Gerard Way’s Young Animal imprint at DC Comics. Cecil's short stories and short comics have been published in Strange Horizons, Tor.com, Womanthology, Star Trek: Waypoint, among others, and she is the Children’s Correspondence Coordinator for The Rumpus, a two-time MacDowell Fellow and the founding YA Editor at the LA Review of Books. Her latest book, Don’t Cosplay With My Heart, is out now! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.
Shade the Changing Girl, Vol. 1 Earth Girl Made Easy From writer Cecil Castellucci and artist Marley Zarcone, Shade the Changing Girl, Vol. 1 Earth Girl Made Easy—a bold new reimagining of one of comics’ maddest and most memorable characters and part of the DC’s Young Animal imprint led by rock-star Gerard Way. Loma Shade may be from another planet, but she’s still like every other twentysomething who feels that their life is going nowhere fast. Bored out of her mind, her solution is to drop out of school, dump her boyfriend and leave her homeworld of Meta behind—courtesy of the infamous “madness coat” of renegade poet Rac Shade, which is not so much a garment as it is a multidimensional gateway. After stealing the coat and astrally projecting herself across space, Loma ends up in the body of Megan Boyer, an Earth girl who seems to have it all: youth, beauty and a conveniently damaged brain. Following her “miraculous” recovery, however, Loma finds there’s just one problem with being Megan: Everyone hates her. She was a bully who terrorized her enemies and her friends alike, and now Loma’s stuck with the consequences. To make matters worse, back on Meta there are dark forces that want Rac’s dangerously valuable coat for their own nefarious purposes, and they’re closing in on Loma’s vulnerable physical body. At the same time, the primal madness that the coat channels is slowly, irresistibly eroding Loma’s equally vulnerable soul. With two new lives to live, can this Changing Girl survive either one without losing her mind? Cecil Castellucci is the author of books and graphic novels for young adults including Boy Proof, The Plain Janes, First Day on Earth and the Eisner-nominated Odd Duck. She is currently writing Shade the Changing Girl, Vol. 1 Earth Girl Made Easy, an ongoing comic on Gerard Way's DC Young Animal imprint. Her picture book, Grandma's Gloves, won the California Book Award Gold Medal. She lives in Los Angeles. Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye Vol. 1: Going Underground DC’s classic Silver Age hero is revived in Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye Vol. 1: Going Underground, the first chapter of a trailblazing new saga from artist Michael Avon Oeming (Powers) and writers Jonathan Rivera and My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way, the visionary founder of DC’s Young Animal imprint! Cave Carson was once the world’s greatest underground adventurer—but that was a long time ago. When he settled down with his wife, Eileen, to raise their daughter, Chloe, he traded the controls of his vehicle, the Mighty Mole Mark 1, for a desk and keyboard. Since then, Cave has led a quiet life—even with the constant distraction of his otherworldly cybernetic eye. But when a sudden illness claims Eileen’s life, Cave’s tranquil existence is shattered—and he and Chloe soon find themselves hurtling down a terrifying tunnel of danger, discovery, mayhem and madness. At the bottom of that tunnel lie secrets buried for decades—secrets that hold the key to thwarting a conspiracy that threatens to consume the surface and subterranean worlds alike. But will Cave and his intrepid team of super-spelunkers be able to overcome this new generation of evil—or is there less to this hero than meets the eye? Collects issues #1-6. Gerard Way is the Eisner Award-winning writer of The Umbrella Academy and the comics miniseries The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. He is the creative mind behind the new grassroots imprint, DC's Young Animal, whose retro-inspired lineup bridges the gap between the DC Universe and Vertigo. Way is also widely known for his former role as the lead vocalist and co-founder of the alternative rock band My Chemical Romance. Jon Rivera is a writer of comic books and graphic novels, best known for his work on DC's Young Animal. Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye, co-written by imprint founder Gerard Way, is one of the line's inaugural titles. Doom Patrol Vol. 1: Brick by Brick The spirit of Grant Morrison's groundbreaking Doom Patrol is captured in this debut series starring the cult-favorite misfits as a part of Gerard Way's new Young Animal imprint. Flex Mentallo, Robotman, Rebis, Crazy Jane, and more are back to twist minds and take control. This new take on a classic embraces and reimagines the Morrison run's signature surrealism and irreverence. Incorporating bold, experimental art and a brash tone to match a new generation of readers, Gerard Way's Doom Patrolestablishes radical new beginnings, breaks new ground, and honors the warped team dynamic of the world's strangest heroes. This abstract and unexpected ensemble series nods at the Doom Patrol's roots by continuing to break the barriers of the traditional superhero genre. Collects issues #1-6. Doom Patrol is the flagship title of Young Animal--a four-book grassroots mature reader imprint, creatively spearheaded by Gerard Way, bridging the gap between the DCU and Vertigo, and focusing on the juxtaposition between visual and thematic storytelling. Mother Panic Vol. 1: A Work in Progress As part of the new DC’s Young Animal imprint, a bold new take on the world of the Batman comes from writer Jody Houser, artists Tommy Lee Edwards andShawn Crystal and DC’s Young Animal mastermind Gerard Way—Mother Panic Vol. 1: A Work in Progress. The shadow of the Bat falls over all of Gotham City, from its dark alleys to its glittering high-rises. But a new vigilante has just stepped away from that shadow, and she has her own brand of violent retribution to deal out to the city’s corrupt elites. Meet Violet Paige, a rich young celebutante with a bad attitude and a worse reputation. No one would ever suspect that this tabloid-fodder wild child has a secret hidden beneath her spoiled heiress exterior—a secret that has driven her to become the terrifying force of vengeance against her privileged peers known as Mother Panic! But even as Violet launches her all-out assault on the rich and twisted, her shaky allies threaten to betray her, and every one of Gotham’s guardians—from Batwoman to the Dark Knight himself—is hot on her trail. Will Mother Panic continue to strike terror into her enemies’ hearts? Or will her violent quest for justice reach an equally violent end? Collects Mother Panic Vol. 1: A Work in Progress #1-6. Jody Houser is the creator behind the webcomic Cupcake POW! Houser has written Faith for Valiant Comics, Max Ride: Ultimate Flight and Agent May for Marvel, and Orphan Black for IDW. She has been a contributing writer to numerous comics anthologies, including Avengers: No More Bullying, Vertigo CMYK: Magenta, and both Womanthology series. Houser contributed to Justice League of America: Road to Rebirth and is currently writing Mother Panic for DC. Event date: Friday, September 1, 2017 - 7:30pm

“Sometimes I’ll write something and I’ll weep while I’m writing it,” Cecil Castellucci explains, as we wrap up the interview with one final question. “It’s like I’m getting as close as possible to being human.” She gets close to that state just answering the question. Creation is a pure process for the writer. It’s one that sometimes feels like banging her head against the wall, but it’s an essential part of her existence, from her mid-90s indie rock career as Nerdy Girl, to her career as a young adult novelist that kicked off with 2005’s Boy Proof. Two years later, she collaborated with cartoonist Jim Rugg on The P.L.A.I.N. Janes. Her first graphic novel was a bit among the earliest books that helped form the core of comics’ current YA renaissance. In the subsequent decade, Castellucci has been prolific in both mediums, including a run on the D.C. superhero book, Shade, The Changing Girl and the upcoming Don’t Cosplay With my Heart, which draws upon the writer’s own history with fandom.

Kelly Fitzpatrick is a comic book colorist and has worked on comics including Snow Fall, Peter Panzerfaust, Bitch Planet, and Shade the Changing Girl. How to Get into Our House and Where We Keep the Money (Four Way Books) In this collection’s tour-de-force title story, Ethan, a marketing manager for consumer-goods brands, finds himself in a bizarre standoff with his wife, new boss, and daughter’s swim teacher over the sudden presence in his life of Scudder, Ethan’s graffiti-artist nephew. Before long, Ethan is defacing his boss’s office with dry-erase markers and climbing a condemned building in the dead of night. How swiftly, Gianopoulos reminds us, we become the very thing we’re trying to avoid; how soon we find ourselves at the point of no return: a guy whose prep school girlfriend has just “asked him to break her leg” with a cinderblock “and send her home.” A love song to the power of the inadvertent and unplanned, this collection tracks a gaggle of lost souls—a bewildered young medical student, a man jealous of his girlfriend’s love for her tiny Pomeranian, and a restless free-diving housewife—as it captures “that itchy, panicky feeling you get when you suspect you’ve stepped into the slowest line at the supermarket.” Its characters persist in lives pockmarked with awkwardness, continually in search of “another parallel version” of themselves. Amid their domestic mayhem, Gianopoulos finds humor and warmth, an animal curled up around a protagonist’s ankle “like a misplaced comma.” How to Get into Our House and Where We Keep the Money is a witty, telling, urbane exploration of the clumsiness of relationships, of the small wars and gigantic missteps that shape our lives with our nearest and not-always-so-dearest. Praise for How to Get into Our House and Where We Keep the Money “A wonderful collection of nine stories combining wry humor, engaging characters, and shrewd psychological insight....Witty, discerning, and laugh-out-loud funny.”--Kirkus Reviews Starred Review “This is a stunning collection, brilliant in its incisive depictions of the mapless territory of midlife. From the man who despises and tries to lose his girlfriend’s dog to the would-be seducer for whom technology reveals a searing glimpse at how he is perceived by the young, these characters inspire your compassion even as they beg for your forgiveness—and even as they make you laugh out loud. Short story collections rarely arrive this compelling, this accomplished, this imaginative, and this wise. I am already impatient to share this masterful book, which I know will convert more and more readers to the joys of the form.”—Robin Black “Panio Gianopoulos is the most natural of storytellers, and in his first collection, How to Get into Our House and Where We Keep the Money, he shows enormous range, mastery and feel for the short story. With echoes ranging from Updike to Murakami to Tom Perrotta, and a wonderfully capacious group of characters, Gianopoulos announces himself as a terrific new voice for the form. This is one to read and savor.”—Daniel Torday “Panio Gianopoulos’s How to Get into Our House and Where We Keep the Moneyis an auspicious debut. In these smart and knowing stories, smart and knowing people come up against the limits of their knowingness and break through into a deeper humanity.”—David Gates Panio Gianopoulos is the author of the novella A Familiar Beast. His writing has appeared in Big Fiction, Brooklyn Rail, Catamaran Literary Reader, Chicago Quarterly Review, Los Angeles Review of Books, Northwest Review, Rattling Wall, and Tin House. A recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, he has been included in the anthologies The Bastard on the Couch, Cooking and Stealing: The Tin House Nonfiction Reader, and The Encyclopedia of Exes. He lives with his family in New York.

Soupy Leaves Home (Dark Horse Books) Two misfits with no place to call home take a train-hopping journey from the cold heartbreak of their Eastern homes to the sunny promise of California in this Depression-era coming-of- age tale. When Pearl runs away from her abusive father, she has nowhere to go—until she stumbles upon a disguise that gives her the key to a new identity. Reborn as a boy named Soupy, she hitches her star to Ramshackle, a hobo who takes her under his wing. Ramshackle’s kindness and protection go a long way toward helping Soupy heal from her difficult past. But he has his own demons to wrestle with, and he’ll need Soupy just as much as she needs him. Praise for Soupy Leaves Home: “Soupy Leaves Home tells the story of a time no longer familiar to us—a time of living the rails and simmering Mulligan Soup, a time of chosen names and secret languages—yet a tale that anyone with a longing heart and a restless spirit can relate to. It transports you magically to a place long gone, but its tale of poverty and survival are still as relevant as they ever were—the characters may be penniless, but they are so emotionally wealthy that this book leaves you filled with warmth, hope, and love.”—Gerard Way “Castellucci’s heartfelt odyssey is a reckoning with death and identity on the tracks, brought to life by Pimienta’s patient, ever-evolving use of color. Soupy Leaves Home is for all restless souls hungry to start again.”—Nate Powell (March, Swallow Me Whole) “A charming and optimistic slice of Americana.”—Hope Larson (Wrinkle in Time, Batgirl) "I love Cecil Castellucci, she is crazy and cool and full of energy and heart, and so is all of her work. And Soupy Leaves Home may be one of her finest and most effecting works yet!”—Jeff Lemire “Soupy's journey comes alive through richly color-saturated, usually monochromatic panels that orient readers to a bygone era. Castellucci has created a strong heroine who both defies conventionality and embodies empowerment; as her transformative journey nears its denouement, she makes a resolute decision: 'I have to go and face my things or else I'll never be free' a message still highly relevant to today's world. A compelling graphic offering that explores relevant gender roles and self-identity through a historical lens.”—Kirkus Reviews “A well-researched and richly illustrated runaway tale that will appeal to fans of escapist fiction and thoughtful readers.”—Anna Murphy, Berkeley Carroll School, Brooklyn (School Library Journal Reviews) Cecil Castellucci is the author of books and graphic novels for young adults including Boy Proof, The Plain Janes, First Day on Earth, The Year of the Beasts, Tin Star, Stone in the Sky, and the Eisner-nominated Odd Duck. In 2015 she coauthored Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure, and in 2016 she worked on Shade, the Changing Girl, an ongoing comic for Gerard Way’s Young Animal imprint at DC Comics. Her picture book Grandma’s Gloves won the California Book Awards Gold Medal. Her short stories have been published in Strange Horizons, YARN, Tor.com, and various anthologies, including Teeth, After, and Interfictions 2. She is the children’s correspondence coordinator for The Rumpus, a two-time MacDowell Fellow, and the founding YA editor at the Los Angeles Review of Books. She lives in Los Angeles. Jose Pimienta grew up in Mexicali, Mexico, watching a lot of cartoons and listening to as much music as possible. After finishing high school, he studied visual storytelling in Georgia, where he made friends and drank a lot of coffee. Eventually, he headed back to Southern California, where he currently resides. He draws on a regular basis and still listens to as much music as he can. He also enjoys recreational walks and whistling. Sometimes he goes by “Joe.”

It's time to look at the current Previews catalog from Diamond, and for this month Derek is joined by Paul, the new cohost of the monthly Young Readers series. Paul has helped out on earlier Previews shows, and as Andy has jokingly pointed out, on those occasions the episodes have tended to clock in on the longish side. And indeed, that's what happens this week! But the lengthiness of the April Previews show is filled not only with choice solicits, but also with critical commentary, astute observations, and even a couple of soapbox rants. In their highlights from this month's catalog, the guys discuss offerings from: Dark Horse Comics - Briggs Land: Lone Wolves #1, Bankshot #1, Calla Cthulhu, and the trade of Dead Inside DC/Vertigo - Shade, the Changing Girl, Vol. 1: Earth Girl Made Easy and a new edition of It's a Bird... Jim, Eric and Reggie check out this week's DC Comics and prepare for war! Yep, Eric's neighbor is at it again, but they get past that to review everything, talk nonsense and have a ton of...well, they try to have fun. How can Eric have fun with all the continuity problems in Green Lanterns? The answer: He can't! They do like a bunch of books this week, including...JUSTICE LEAGUE! They begin with Gerard Way and Nick Derington's Doom Patrol, the maiden voyage of the new imprint. There have been three issues released so far, and the guys really like what they've seen. Way definitely takes a cue from Grant Morrison's legendary run on the title, referencing many of Morrison's original additions to the Silver Age series -- most notably Danny the Street and Flex Mentallo -- yet at the same time making Doom Patrol uniquely his own. After that, Andy and Derek discuss the first four issues of Shade the Changing Girl. This is Cecil Castellucci and Marley Zarcone's revamping of the old Steve Ditko creation (and best popularized in the early 1990s by Peter Milligan and Chris Bachelor), Shade the Changing Man. Their emphasis on the lives of young high school women promises to be a curious spin on the property. Next, the guys turn to what Andy calls his favorite of the Young Animal line, Jonathan Rivera, Gerard Way, and Michael Avon Oeming's Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye. As they point out, Cave Carson is a character from the early 1960s appearing in both Brave and the Bold and Showcase, but unlike his contemporary Rip Hunter, he never received a title of his own. Way, Rivera, and Oeming are now giving him that opportunity. The Two Guys conclude their episode with a very different kind of Young Animal title, Jody Houser and Tommy Lee Edwards's Mother Panic. This is the only one of the four series not to be based on Silver Age properties, and it's the only one to be deeply enmeshed into the DC Universe. For that reason, Derek is less enamored with Mother Panic -- at least in terms of the first two issues so far -- feeling that it takes itself too seriously and wonders why this wasn't a regular DC title. Andy has no problem with this Gotham-drenched series.

Mad science is the punkest s*** there is. Teenage sweethearts Nat & Sumesh spend their nights breaking into abandoned superlabs to steal the parts they need to build a time machine - and they've just found the most important part. But mysterious entities keep trying to stop them turning it on. Now all they've gotta do is hang on long enough to figure out why. Magdalene Visaggio and Eryk Donovan bring you a high-octane adventure full of robots, muscle cars, and queer-a** skater punks in Quantum Teens are Go, the brand new series fromBlack Mask Studios! Magdalene & Eryk join Graphic Policy Radio to discuss the new series before the pre-order date ends and it hit stores shelves. Joining hosts Elana and Brett is Graphic Policy contributor Logan Dalton. Magdalene Visaggio is the writer and creator of Kim & Kim and Quantum Teens Are Go for Black Mask Studios. A former wannabe academic theologian, she turned to writing comics after dropping out of graduate school. She actually started writing comics when she was eight, but honestly, those were pretty terrible. She has contributed work to DC Comics’ Shade the Changing Girl, alongside her participation in the Dirty Diamonds comic anthology. She is also a contributing writer at Paste Magazine. Magdalene lives in Manhattan. Eryk lives in Savannah, GA and draws comics. He is known for his work on MEMETIC, COGNETIC, CONSTANTINE, and the Harvey and Eisner Nominated IN THE DARK ANTHOLOGY amongst others. His hands are rarely free of ink. By day, Logan is a data entry administrator. At night, he writes about comics, TV shows for sites like Graphic Policy and Nerds on the Rocks, and is even working on a play. Once he interviewed a vampire. Feel free to pick his brain on LGBTQ representation in comics at any time on Twitter @MidnighterBae

Our guest on this episode is Cecil Castellucci, one of America's most influential young-adult novelists. Her first book, Grandma's Gloves, won the California Book Award Gold Medal. Her novel Boyproof debuted in 2005 and was named one of the best books for young adults by the American Library Association. She's also in the world of comics; she won the Joe Shuster Award for her graphic novel Plain Janes, which was published by DC Comics' Minx imprint. She was nominated for a Will Eisner Award for her book Odd Duck, and Moving Target, her Princess Leia Star Wars novel, was published to great acclaim last year. Right now, she is working on Shade the Changing Girl, part of the new imprint that DC Comics is putting out, Young Animal, which is spearheaded by none other than Gerard Way. http://BlastoffComics.com

The gangs all here to talk about this week in DC Comics, but of course, things go a bit off the rails. Jim gets very angry at what other podcasts make their listeners do, Eric disagrees with Jim about Mischief Night and Reggie loses his voice imitating Swamp Thing. They also manage to talk about a bunch of books, news and listener mail. Enjoy! This starts with probably too much talk about a toilet. That leads, naturally of course, into the building of our new Back Issue boxes. This is the last week we’ll bring up our “C” logo t-shirt Kickstarter. Barnes & Noble is having a rough go of book-selling and that leads us to other retailers and their reasons for a perceived economic downturn. Their reasons surprise us. Clowns! DC sales are up. Marvel’s are down. We’re looking forward to: Supergirl: Being Super, Green Valley, Moonshine, Shade the Changing Girl, Wonder Woman: The True Amazon. Brian Azzaerllo is joining us for Local Comic Shop Day!
This week, we have an amazing conversation with Cecil Castellucci, author of many fine books, including Odd Duck, The Plain Janes, Star Wars: Moving Target, and the upcoming Shade the Changing Girl for DC Comics' Young Animal imprint and Soupy Leaves Home for Dark Horse Comics. Cecil has had an incredibly diverse career, and we do our best to touch on much of it - from her days at the Fame high school in New York to her time in an indie rock band to her more recent YA and graphic novel work. We chat about contributing to the Star Wars universe, charting an experimental course with Gerard Way on the brand-new Young Animal books, gender-swapping the character of Shade (who was previously Shade the Changing Man for DC's Vertigo line), and dipping her toes into the world of opera. This one's just a flat-out fun conversation.
