Ep 11 Stewart Island Whitetail Part 2 with Leigh CraggBy sheer coincidence Leigh hunted Kelly's Block the same as Dano did for our first SI episode. Leigh's first trip was in 2018, he returned to Kelly's again in 2023. This is a great follow up to the first SI instalment. Leigh was able to apply lessons learned on his first trip and maximise his chances of success for his second trip. This episode is not repetitive at all. You will get just as much information from this EP as any other SI podcast you may have listened to and help reinforce the lessons these adventurous hunters are passing on.
New Zealand Rugby Players Association CEO Rob Nichol has been at the forefront of what has been a rather tubulent time for professional rugby. Originally from Stewart Island, Rob moved to Auckland, initially working as a police officer, before settling on a 10-acre lifestyle block near Pokeno. After laying the law aside, the qualified accountant turned his talents to helping run the NZRPA. Since his time as CEO he's navigated the Silver Lake controversy, governance concerns, and eligibility rules on behalf of some of our most well known players. Rob Nichol joined Simon Barnett and James Daniels for this week's Six and a Song. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
David shares the story of his latest love affair, after falling for Seabreeze III, a 48-year-old classic 105-foot motoryacht, that he is acquiring for the rapidly growing, Ocean Sailing Expeditions fleet. After stumbling across Seabreeze III, 2-months ago and reading all about the painstaking restoration undertaken from 2019-2021 at a cost of more than $3.3m, by the current "motivated vendors", it was just too hard to go past. David openly shares the story of the roller coaster ride with Ocean Sailing Expeditions over the past 5 years and why this addition to the business makes total sense, even though its powered by motor and not sail. David dives into the business history, challenges, set backs and growth story. If you own a boat or a business, you'll relate to many of these challenges. This episode includes an exclusive new, one-time Membership and Shareholder offer, to help fund the acquisition of the vessel. You can benefit significantly by accessing sailing adventures at 30-100% discount in return for a one-off investment. Seabreeze III will operate around New Zealand, offering cruises and expeditions to the Bay of Islands, Hauraki Gulf, Marlborough Sounds, Nelson/Tasman Region, Fiordland and Stewart Island, in the warmer months of the year and head to Fiji for 4 months each winter. With 4 different deck levels, Seabreeze III is the perfect on the water, viewing platform for special events such as Sail GP, the Americas Cup and Round-the-World race leg starts and finishes in Auckland. Summer's just around the corner but the weather has other plans on Thursday as warnings for heavy rain, snow and severe gale northwesterlies are in place across New Zealand. MetService has issued wind warnings Thursday morning. Hawke's Bay is forecast to have strong west-to-northwest winds reaching severe gale force in exposed places and lasting until Friday morning. The Tararua District, Marlborough and Canterbury regions will be hit by gale northwesterly winds from 9'o'clock Thursday morning until 6'o'clock Friday evening. At the same time a heavy snow watch is in place for Otago, Clutha, Southland, Stewart Island and Fiordland Thursday night until mid morning Friday. Further severe winds are forecast to hit these areas from 8'o'clock Thursday until lunch time Friday. Snow is expected to fall to sea level and the amount of snowfall may approach warning criteria in areas 300metres above. MetService head of weather communications Lisa Murray spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
Tim has been hiking through Stewart Island with two of his oldest and best friends in preparation for this very screening. Guy has visited Melbourne, enjoyed himself for a few days, and downloaded Fast Five onto his phone—all to ensure he is in an optimal mental state to enjoy the film. The boys take roughly twenty-five minutes to even begin talking about Fast Five. The movie—and this remains a quality movie—is not where their heads are at. Tim admires a tree exploding in the film, Guy enjoys some cinematography. At the end of quite a pleasant and meandering conversation, the boys give an honest assessment of both the film and their performance in this episode.Support us on Substack at twioat.substack.com. Stewart Island tourism operators are reeling from a stoush over access to nearby Ulva Island bird sanctuary. Nearly 40,000 visitors went to Rakiura / Stewart Island last season, with most travelling to Ulva Island - a jewel in the Department of Conservation's crown. However, ahead of this year's season, tourist operators have been told the only wharf in Post Office Cove has reached the end of its life and is no longer safe to use. But DoC and the district council are at an impasse over its replacement - and who should pay for what. Tourism operators are frustrated and worried. Kathryn speaks with Aihe Wildlife Cruises and Water Taxi owner Furhana Ahmad, Southland District Mayor Rob Scott and DOC Operations Director southern South Island Aaron Fleming.
An unlikely pair are creating a buzz on Stewart Island. Baywatch star David Hasselhoff is spending a few days filming a TV show on Rakiura with New Zealand comedian Rhys Darby. The duo participated in a special South Sea Hotel quiz night and filmed a segment with the island's only police officer. Constable Stuart Newton told Mike Hosking that Hasselhoff was very down to earth, taking him up on his offer for a ride home. Filming is expected to continue around the country. What do you think is the rarest bird in New Zealand? Perhaps, you immediately think of the Kakapo? But the title probably belongs to a seabird, or a little-known shorebird, the Southern Dotterel (or the Southern Red-breasted Plover) (Chadrius obscurus), which has been described as a distinct species and listed as such on the IUCN Red LIst. It is listed as Critically Endangered and the population trend is indicated as Decreasing. Last assessed in 2017, the IUCN estimates that the population is between 60 and 80 individuals, which is limited to one population, which occurs (fortunately) within the boundaries of the Rakiura National Park, on Rakiura (or Stewart Island), off the southern tip of the South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand. Alasdair Burns spoke with Grant, from Stewart Island (Rakiura) about the Southern Dotterel, and recounted his work previously with the species, and explained why the specialisation of the species, and it's limited range makes it extremely vulnearable, especially to feral predators, such as cats, rats, mice and possums.
