NEWS! Greg and Andy were lucky enough to interview the incredibly talented writer, Kyle Starks. You're probably very familiar with Kyle's previous books: Sex Castle, The 6 Sidekicks of Trigger Keaton, I Hate This Place, and Rock Candy Mountain. On this episode Kyle discusses his newest book, Where Monsters Lie, published by Dark Horse on February 1st. We get into what spurred the idea for this series about a gated community for slasher monsters to recoup after their latest kill and begin to plot their next victim(s). Kyle also gave us a peek inside his writing process and made us wonder ‘Where does the guy from Saw go to buy all his supplies and why did no one connect the dots when he rented that warehouse?' There's still time to head to your local comic shop or favorite online retailer and DEMAND that they pre-order this book for you so that you can experience the gruesomely good time that is, Where Monsters Lie! For MORE Kyle Starks goodness be sure to visit kylestarks.com and @thekylestarks on Twitter and Instagram. WHERE MONSTERS LIE #1 Haven't you always wondered what slasher monsters--the masked home invasion family, the mindless unkillable monster, the serial killer trapped in a doll--what they do for those couple of years in-between their murder sprees? They're at Wilmhurst--a gated community in the middle of nowhere where they relax--or try to--until they get the call to go out and kill again. Connor Hayes survived his first slasher in summer camp. A handful of years later he barely escaped a psychopath who built torture puzzles for his victims. Since then he's been training and planning for running into these creatures again. He's a respected special agent, and now he knows where the monsters lie and he's planning for war. Another great interview lined up for you folks today, because Greg got the opportunity to sit down with the 6 Sidekicks of Trigger Keaton team of writer Kyle Starks and artist Chris Schweizer. They are both Eisner-nominated cartoonists in their own right, and have individually brought you such works as Sexcastle and Old Head in Kyle's case, and The Crogan Adventures and The Roanoke Colony: America's First Mystery in Chris's. But these virtual studiomates have also started combining their talents on books like Rock Candy Mountain and Mars Attacks, and Trigger Keaton, now out in trade paperback from Image Comics, continues that trend. Greg talks to them about their particular working dynamic over several projects, how COVID has changed the importance and avenues of social media and creator outreach, selling motion in a static medium, balancing comedy and drama without shortchanging either, which Keaton TV show would make the jump to the real world if they had their way, Kyle's upcoming Fuck This Place ongoing series (starting May 18), just what the hell a ‘tiger truck' is, and much more! Robots From Tomorrow is a twice-weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth's surface. You can subscribe to it via iTunes or through the RSS feed at RobotsFromTomorrow.com. Danny Newcomb - "This World," a 2021 single on Rock Candy Mountain. Danny Newcomb's musical journey goes all the way back to 1981, when the hair was bigger, the music simultaneously messy and glam, and Seattle wasn't even a footnote in the music zeitgeist. At that time, Newcomb was a member of a KISS-inspired Seattle-area band called Shadow made up of four teens, one with a particularly now-recognizable name - Mike McCready. Since then, Newcomb's gone on to play in a number of bands including dark pop outfit Goodness and the McCready and Nancy Wilson-featuring short-lived side project. Under his own name, Newcomb makes straightforward guitar strummers, with his last release, 2020's Mackerel Sky, departing from his long-standing rock-n-roll, singer-songwriter roots for a drum-less, introspective, piano and acoustic-guitar led record. On our Song of the Day, “This World,” he is back to playing with a full band, bringing the piano into the sound as well. “I've always been a fan of classic songwriting and so many are written on the piano,” Newcomb explains. “It's such a great instrument to have in the mix when there is a strong main melody — you can call and respond with the vocals, echo a chorus subtly, while adding a driving percussive feel at the same time. It's made the sound bigger, and it feels a little more finished to me.” Last year, he started gathering material for a new release, writing for the band, and “This World” is the first single of 10 songs recorded with producer John Goodmanson, (Sleater-Kinney, Wolf Parade, Quasi) and drummer Eric Eagle, bassist Jeremy Lightfoot, and Erin Rubin on piano. “My good friend Carrie Akre [who played with Newcomb in Goodness and The Rockfords] will be singing with me on a track as well — its a bit of a throwback, (that song) but maybe in the best possible way." "I wrote ‘This World' last fall after being shut in for 10 months or so on the small farm on the small island where I live,” Newcomb continues. “I think there was line that drew me in — the one that says: ‘Don't ever let the Strangers in' — because that's what it was, I saw my family every morning, the sheep, the chickens, my geese, my neighbors, but not anyone outside my immediate circle. And I missed seeing people in that larger circle, people at shows, people on the ferry, talking to people i didn't know, making connections. Felt like the whole world was lonely — literally — but it was also a state of mind.” The single is the first song off the upcoming LP in Spring 2022 tentatively titled The Islander. In what is a nonsense-driven episode, Chad chews on dead skin, Jean-luc talks Fifty Shades Freed, and Alex quietly ponders how he came to be grouped with two big mountains of dysfunction. Also Overwatch gets brought up at some point. After that it's good ol' comic book talk with VS #1, Twisted Romance #1, Batman #40, Rock Candy Mountain #8, and Snotgirl #9. Gears of War gets dragged in somehow too, because of course it does. Enjoy and catch us @ComicsPodcast and follow our stuff at wethenerdy.com

On this week's Comics Dash, Chad, Jean, and Alex miss a Monty Python reference, talk some movie stuff, and then chat a bunch of comic books. We hit up Batman: The Lost, Kid Lobotomy, Rock Candy Mountain, that Top Cow book that isn't awful but I can't remember the name of, and some other stuff. Lazy show notes this week. It's late because someone didn't get me his audio in a timely fashion. Follow us @ComicsPodcast and send us bad Batman fanfiction. We're still aiming to do that.

This week’s guest is Kyle Starks, the writer of Dead of Winter from Oni Press. This is a zombie comic based on the popular table-top games of the same name and it is loads of fun. Kyle describes the series as “Air Bud meets the Walking Dead.” If that doesn’t sell you, nothing will. The first two issues of this four issue mini-series are out now and they are really great. Issue #3 is set for release on October 18th. In addition to Dead of Winter, Kyle has some other non-horror books that he writes and illustrates including Sexcastle, Rock Candy Mountain, and Kill Them All, which was just released by Oni Press this week. If you haven’t checked out his work yet, you are in for a treat. Kyle can be found online on Twitter as @TheKyleStarks. He also has a Patreon page at patreon.com/kylestarks. Things we love and can't get over this week: Colossal (16:55), Rock Candy Mountain (27:18), and Bullwhip (32:56).
As he tries to do every month, Derek visits his local shop, Valhalla Games and Comics in Plano, TX, to talk with customers and employees about what they're reading, what they're looking forward to, and what interests them in current comics culture. For April the topic is open, so anything goes...and the resulting conversation is free-floating and casual. Among the topics that come up are local conventions, Bones of the Coast from Cloudscape Comics, getting caught up with the Marvel Universe on Netflix, Astro City, Makoto Shinkai's Your Name, the return of Rat Queens, Kyle Starks's Rock Candy Mountain, the convoluted world of Love and Rockets, the new Anne Hathaway movie Colossal, and speculations on how (and if) comics creators will eventually work Donald Trump into their stories.

This time, they talk with him about his new Image Comics series Rock Candy Mountain, the first issue of which comes out next week. In their conversation, the guys ask Kyle about the genesis of this project, his collaboration with Chris Schweizer, the fascination with hobos, and his decision to set the narrative in post-war America. Andy and Derek also spend a good deal of time talking with their guest about the demands of writing and drawing for an ongoing monthly series and how that dynamic might have changed his storytelling style, previously exemplified by the original graphic novels Sexcastle and Kill Them All. Along the way, they discuss his ongoing writing for Rick and Morty, other projects in the works, and possibilities for Kyle's hobo name.
In this week's episode of Off Panel, cartoonist Kyle Starks joins the show to talk his new comic at Image, Rock Candy Mountain. Starks discusses what appealed to him about the hobo treasure hunt genre, the tropes of rail travel, researching hobo culture, when the song "Big Rock Candy Mountain" came into play, world building, the realities of hobo life, the language in the book, the impact of colorist Chris Schweizer and designer Dylan Todd, overcoming the perceptions of his "cartoony" art style, his process for bringing an issue to life, before the episode comes to a close with serious basketball talk starting around the 52 minute mark.
