Dr. Michael Kimmage is a professor of history at the Catholic University of America in Washington DC. He is also a fellow at the German Marshall Fund, and chair of the Advisory Council for the Kennan Institute at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington DC. From 2014 to 2017, Kimmage served on the Secretary's Policy Planning Staff at the U.S. Department of State, where he held the Russia/Ukraine portfolio. He publishes widely on international affairs, U.S.-Russian relations and American diplomatic history. Kimmage is the author of: The Conservative Turn: Lionel Trilling, Whittaker Chambers and the Lessons of Anti-Communism (2009); In History's Grip: Philip Roth's Newark Trilogy (2012); The Abandonment of the West: The History of an Idea in American Foreign Policy (2020). He writes frequently for Foreign Affairs and other major publications.

In this episode, I'm joined by Hoops legend Kenny Anderson, one of the country's best prospects during his time at the prestigious Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens, New York. Before gracing the hardwood at Georgia Tech and later the NBA, Anderson could rack up honors that no other player since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar would do becoming a four-time Parade All-American. This feat had not been accomplished since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He was also named to the All-City team in all four years. he was named a McDonald's All-American, Mr. Basketball for New York State, and Gatorade's High School Basketball Player of the Year After being heavily recruited, Kenny Anderson would spend two seasons with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets earning 1990 AP All-America 1990/1991 First Team All-ACC,1990 ACC Rookie of the Year he would turn pro starting his career with the New Jersey Nets who drafted him drafted 2nd overall in the 1991 NBA draft, where he put up 19 points and ten assists per game during the 1994 season, where Anderson was named to the NBA All-Star team. After the 1996 season, Anderson signed a deal with the Portland Trail Blazers. On this edition of Parallax Views, journalist Lev Golinkin joins me to discuss the U.S. arming of the Azov Battalion and Ukranian far-right neo-Nazi elements. Lev is the author of A Backpack, a Bear, and Eight Crates of Vodka and arrived in the U.S. as a child refugee Kharkov, a city in eastern Ukraine. His writings on Ukraine have been featured in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, The Forward, The Nation, and Time.Com. For some time now Lev has been raising the alarm bells about the U.S. arming of the Azov Battalion and far-right elements in Ukraine. He is quick to point out that, of course, not all Ukrainians are of this fascist ultranationalist contingent, but that concerns about the Azov Battalion and other Ukranian ultranationalist organizations are not merely Russian/Kremlin propaganda. The U.S. support for elements like the Azov Battalion could, Lev believes, lead to forms of blowback especially as news surfaces that U.S. neo-nazis heading over to Ukraine to network with and receive paramilitary training from the. Lev and I delve into the history of the Azov Battalion and the history of Ukranian ultranationalism more broadly going back to the figure of Stepan Bandera in WWII, the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, and the origins of Ukranian ultranationalism in Galicia. Lev explains the sordid history of Ukranian ultranationalists and their violence against Poles, Jews, and even fellow Ukranians.
