Since Hamas militants attacked Southern Israel on October 7, taking roughly 1200 lives, and capturing hundreds of hostages, the Israeli military has responded with overwhelming force in Gaza. Bombs and other military actions have killed nearly 42,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Most of the homes, businesses, schools and mosques in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed – and millions have been displaced. And there is no end in sight to the bombardment. The U.S. State Department says Hamas has refused for weeks to engage in cease-fire talks. Previously, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly stalled a cease-fire and hostage deal by adding new conditions to negotiations. For the past 12 months, Palestinian Americans and the wider Muslim community in the Seattle area have been urging the U.S. to halt weapons transfers and funding to Israel. On Saturday, roughly 500 protesters gathered at Pier 62 on Seattle's waterfront to demand change. Yesterday, we spoke with members of Seattle's Jewish community about how they're remembering the first anniversary of the October 7th attack on Israel. Today, we're speaking with members of Seattle's Palestinian and Muslim communities about the effects of the war in Gaza. Guests: Akram Baioumy, an Imam with MAPS (Muslim Association of Puget Sound) Yaz Kader, a Palestinian American and an uncommitted delegate from Washington state at the 2024 Democratic National Convention. He's also the author of a new Op-Ed in Real Change News, called “Silencing the Palestinian voice at the local and national levels”. Monday marked the one year anniversary of the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attacks in Israel in which 1,200 people were killed and 250 people, including women and children, were taken hostage. The Oct. 7 attacks sparked a war Israel continues to wage against Hamas in Gaza. According to the health ministry there, 41,000 people have been killed, many of them women and children, and much of Gaza has been damaged or destroyed. And now the war faces new fronts as in recent weeks, Israel has sent troops into and trades rocket fire with Hezbollah in Lebanon, and shields itself from missiles from Iran, of which Hamas and Hezbollah are proxies. On this episode of the "Sound of Ideas," we will have a conversation, about how the war is impacting communities locally in NE Ohio. We'll hear directly from a panel of local faith and community leaders about this toll and ask if there's been anything over the last year that's given them solace or hope.

Thanks to listener Miriam, we're tackling John Marsden's Tomorrow, When The War Began (1993), as well as its 2010 film adaptation by Stuart Beattie and the Brendan Maher-directed season of TV from 2016.This massive Australian hit is highly teachable, though don't go looking for commentary on colonialism or political curiosity from its teenage protagonists. The film is a big budget action film that Joe prefers, while Brenna likes the direction and relationship between the kids in the TV series, even if both adaptations lean into uncomfortable racism in their depiction of the invading force. Yikes!Plus: let no one doubt Brenna's commitment to podcasting because Brenna was on tornado watch when we recorded this episode (listen to the outtakes for proof!)Wanna connect with the show? It's been two decades since the U.S. invaded Iraq over alleged weapons of mass destruction. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed, and no “WMDs” were found. Today many analysts say the war and 2011 American withdrawal destabilized the country and paved the way for the Islamic State's rise to power in 2014. Reset hears from Iraqi refugee Ekram Hannah (with MIRA: Middle Eastern Immigrant and Refugee Alliance) and Thomas Day, a former military journalist and veteran, about how they are reflecting on 20 years since the start of the war.

We're baaaaaaack! Our last episode was published on February 24th, the day Russia began its brutal war here in Ukraine. We published that episode, and then promptly fell off the podcast map. Our whole lives changed on that day and we'll never be the same. But at long last, we have picked up our heads and decided to revive the ol' podcast. ❤️In this episode, I (Kim) shared our community's experiences during the first couple weeks of war and how we responded as the fight came closer and closer to our Homestead. It was a bit emotional for me to return to those days, but I think it's important to share our experiences with you. This war in Ukraine is far from over and it is our responsibility, those of us who love Ukraine, to remind the world of what is happening here. Please don't forget Ukraine.
A ship carrying grain is due to leave Odessa port in Ukraine - the first since the start of the war with Russia. It follows a deal struck between the two countries last week, ending the Russian blockade of the port. We speak to Taras Vysotsky, Ukraine's deputy minister of agriculture, who was at the port with President Zelensky and a gathering of western ambassadors. And Chris McGill, underwriter at Ascot Syndicate at Lloyds of London, tells us how easy it is to insure ships coming out of Ukrainian ports. Food inflation in Sri Lanka has reached 90%. The BBC's Sajid Nazmi is in the capital Colombo and tells us what prices are like. In Ghana, drought and mine damage are having a devastating effect on cocoa crops. The cocoa harvest is predicted to fall to its lowest level in 12 years. We speak to Jeffery Ntorinkansah of the Commodities Brokers Association. And we hear how the American bullfrog is causing huge damage to the global economy. Their numbers are increasingly difficult to control, causing widespread crop devastation and destroying natural vegetation.
