She's also a clinical pharmacist on a mission to make a difference for our kids and advocate for palliative care for rare families. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Can you tell us about yourself and your family? In my past life, I was a clinical pharmacy specialist. My daughter Rory Belle was born in October 2019 and she was hospitalized for failure to thrive. She was 8 months old when she was diagnosed with NARS1. My daughter passed away in February 2021 from NARS1.  What is a clinical pharmacist? A clinical pharmacist is someone who works alongside care providers to help improve the care for patients. I was residency trained after pharmacy school to gain extra skills and expertise to practice to my fullest potential and to work with physicians and nursing partners to administer care.  How do we as parents get you on our team? Inquire to see if there is a clinical pharmacist or clinical pharmacy specialist available at your facility to refer you to so you can ask any questions you have. When it comes to consent, what can be leveraged? Consent is the golden seal of documentation when understanding your risks and benefits and providing protection for a prescriber and parents. I always tried to outline for the prescriber the benefit and risks of a medication for a patient to make conversations easier between the prescriber and the patient. As a parent, if you have documentation for drug repurposing, provide that data and ask the prescriber what the concerns are and open up the conversation so that you can balance benefits and risks. And if needed, ask if there's a clinical pharmacist available to add to the conversation. How do we create awareness and make this a standard of care to have a clinical pharmacist on our team? I think the first thing is to ask for the resource when you're at appointments. I'd like to see more legislative efforts. There are states that leverage their pharmacies to work under protocol that allows them to practice more freely. With the pipeline of therapies coming out, like gene therapy and repurposing with FDA labeling, these things need to be handled in a deliberate fashion. If you keep asking, people will start partnering.  What advice do you have for families? The most important takeaways are not to take no for an answer and ask your doctor to connect you with a clinical pharmacy specialist if you need help pushing conversations forward. Before joining Michter's, Andrea spent over ten years with Diageo in various whiskey related positions including Director of Distillation and Maturation, North America - overseeing both the U.S. and Canadian distillation and maturation programs. About Michter's Process: CooperageWe Pay Careful Attention to the Wood Used in the Construction of Our Barrels.  We are specifying wood that has been thoroughly and properly dried, sometimes for as long as 18-48 months, in order to enhance the natural properties of the wood which allow for better flavor and to reduce the levels of tannin imparted to the whiskey. Toasting & CharringThe Barrels Made to Our Specifications Are Toasted Before Charring.  Toasting a barrel before charring helps to make the wood's sugars more accessible. These sugars caramelize and concentrate to form the "red line" in the barrel stave cross-sections due to the heat, ultimately adding more flavor and color to the whiskey as it seeps through the char to the caramel red line. Low Entry ProofWe Enter Our Rye and Bourbon Into Barrels at 103 Proof (51.5% ABV). Although the typical industry entry proof is 125 proof, we believe that the lower 103 proof (51.5% ABV) level – which was historically regarded as the gold standard in Kentucky – allows for the concentrated sugars in the toasted and charred wood to dissolve more readily into the distillate as it cycles in and out of the barrel. Even though the lower entry proof yields fewer bottles per barrel, we believe that the smooth flavor and richer mouthfeel makes it worth it. Heat CyclingWe Heat Cycle Our Barrels During Their Aging.  The more often whiskey expands and contracts ("cycles") soaking in and then out of the wood of the barrel, the more flavor it absorbs from the sugars in the caramelized red line of the wood. Heat cycling is an uncommon practice used to raise and lower the temperatures in the barrel warehouses to induce extra cycles within a given year. This practice is extremely costly because heat cycling significantly increases the "Angel Share" evaporation during aging, but in most cases enhances the flavor of the whiskey. Chill FilterAt our distillery, we chill filter all of our whiskeys instead of using carbon filtration that can strip out flavor and aroma. Editor of “Still with Us: Voices of Sibling Suicide Loss,” Dr. Lena Heilmann joins me for our shared reflection on the experience of losing a brother or sister to suicide. We speak about how in this form of loss, siblings experience losing their past, present and future. Lena also suggests many strategies for coping with the grief and trauma of suicide loss.On November 22, 2012, Lena lost her sister Danielle to suicide. Seven years later, she is turning that tremendous grief into energy to help other siblings who have experienced suicide loss.
