Our guest on this week's episode is Chris Jones, executive vice president of Industry for Descartes. Unemployment rates in the United States continue to be under 4% - the latest report released today shows unemployment currently at 3.7%. The low unemployment further demonstrates the growing strength of the overall economy. However, one thing that may stifle additional growth is the difficulty of finding good workers with so few people looking for new jobs. Logistics technology company Descartes has just completed a study called How Bad Is the Supply Chain and Logistics Workforce Challenge? We talk about the results of the study and what it means for finding workers to run our supply chains. It has been a year since that terrible railroad accident in East Palestine, Ohio. Since then, the railroad industry, Congress, and safety agencies have been haggling over how to make trains safer to prevent such future accidents. Railroads have proposed some voluntary measures to increase safety while at the same time stifling a bill in Congress that would mandate some safety procedures. We discuss where things stand now. From warehouses to farms, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) are helping boost productivity, save labor, and continuously improve operations. We look at the cover story for the February issue of DC Velocity that discusses how AMRs are reshaping the warehousing landscape and even influencing how work is done in other industries.CSCMP's Supply Chain Xchange also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane. Now because that loyalty's been shattered, there's a very good chance they're going to go across the street to your competitor." 21:56 The importance of listening to consumers and customers - Mark: "One other area that's top of mind with our customers these days is employee satisfaction. Because it's very expensive to lose a good employee, especially someone who's been there for a period of time and you've invested in all that training. For them to be mired down by spreadsheets and phone calls and all that, if you can give them that visibility and confidence that they're communicating something that's accurate, they feel better as associates." Can a Zebra change its stripes? Yes, if the rapid set of software acquisitions in the past few years by Zebra Technologies are anything to go by. It has catapulted Zebra firmly into the world of SaaS and injected some new ‘magic' into their ubiquitous hardware portfolio, says David Lancefield, software solutions director at Zebra, who joined via the acquisition of AI-powered workforce management and planning company, Reflexis. Zebra's recent flurry of acquisitions include Adaptive Voice (machine vision software), Profitect (prescriptive analytics for retail), Reflexis (AI-powered workforce management and planning) and antuit.ai (AI demand forecast and inventory optimisation) – all aimed at complementing and enhancing their current software and hardware for frontline workers in retail, warehouse, manufacturing, and logistics, to name a few. With brands like Dixons Carphone UK, McDonald's UK and Coop Switzerland under their belt, Zebra helps retailers improve their inventory visibility, optimise costs to streamline shipment completion times, identify fraud, and manage workers and tasks in real-time. With the pandemic in the UK feeling more behind us and labour shortages and supply chain pressures in front, David Lancefield, software solutions director at Zebra, discusses why we're seeing the rise of vertical SaaS for specific industries like retail and logistics. We also explore how SaaS changes workplaces into ecosystems where people, inventory, hardware and software are connected.
