Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Dependency Tree For The Development Of Plate Tectonics, published by Elizabeth on October 5, 2022 on LessWrong. This post is really rough and mostly meant to refer back to when I've produced more work on the subject. Proceed at your own risk. Introduction As I mentioned a few weeks ago I am working on a project on how scientific paradigms are developed. I generated a long list of questions and picked plate tectonics as my first case study. I immediately lost interest in the original questions and wanted to make a dependency graph/tech tree for the development of the paradigm, and this is just a personal project so I did that instead. I didn't reach a stopping point with this graph other than “I felt done and wanted to start on my second case study”. I'm inconsistent about the level of detail or how far back I go. I tried to go back and mark whether data collection was motivated by theory or practical issues but didn't fill it in for every node, even when it was knowable. Working on a second case study felt more useful than refining this one further so I'm shipping this version. “Screw it I'm shipping” is kind of the theme of this blog post, but that's partially because I'm not sure which things are most valuable. Questions, suggestions, or additions are extremely welcome as they help me narrow in on the important parts. But heads up the answer might be “I don't remember and don't think it's important enough to look up”. My current intention is to circle back after 1 or 2 more case studies and do some useful compare and contrast, but maybe I'll find something better. And if you're really masochistic, here's the yEd file to play with. Scattered Thoughts Why I chose plate tectonics It's recent enough to have relatively good documentation, but not so recent the major players are alive and active in field politics. It's not a sexy topic, so while there isn't much work on it what exists is pretty high quality. It is the only accepted paradigm in its field (for the implicit definition of paradigm in my head). Most paradigms are credited to one person on Wikipedia, even though that one person needed many other people's work and the idea was refined by many people after they created it. Plate tectonics is the first I've found that didn't do that. Continental drift is attributed to Alfred Wegener, but continental drift is not plate tectonics. Plate tectonics is acknowledged as so much of a group effort wikipedia doesn't give anyone's name. Content notes This graph is based primarily on Plate Tectonics: An Insider's History of the Modern Theory of the Earth, edited by Naomi Oreskes. It also includes parts from this lecture by Christopher White, and Oxford's Very Short Introduction to Plate Tectonics. Sources vary on how much Alfred Wegener knew when he proposed continental drift. Some say he only had the fossil and continental shape data, but the White video says he had also used synchronous geological layers and evidence of glacial travel. I tried to resolve this by reading Wegener's original paper (translated into English) but it only left me more confused. He predicted cracks in plates being filled in by magma, but only mentions fossils once. Moreover he only brings them up to point to fossils of plants that are clearly maladapted to the climate of their current location, not the transcontinental weirdnesses. He does casually mention “Concerning South America and Africa, biologists and geologists are in close agreement that a Brazilian–African continent existed in the Mesozoic”, but clearly he's not the first one to make that argument. I alas ran out of steam before trying Wegener's book. I was stymied in attempts to check his references by the fact that they're in German. If you really love reading historic academic German and would like to pair on this, please let me know....

Or at least, In the Beginning as it stands in canon until we find out about the earliest events in creation... but this is early enough to be getting on with for the current storyline. :'D Sam is barely even in this one, off doing shady shit with Ruby. Dean is told to “stop it,” but not what “it” is. He assumes it's something to do with his parents, something that happened in the past, and runs smack into the knowledge that Mary was raised a hunter and made a deal with the YED that led to all the events in the series to this point... it's a lot, folks... But Dean also learns that as a baby, Azazel dripped demon blood in Sam's mouth, and THIS is the information Cas warns him about when Dean returns to the present. THIS is what Dean must learn-- what on earth Sam is up to with Ruby-- and THIS is what Dean must stop. And if he can't stop Sam, then the angels will...
Where once again I mention something in passing on the episode graphic that I completely fail to mention in the actual podcast! But this one is a blink-and-you-miss-it handful of frames that's far more ominous with the context of the rest of the series. And in context of this early part of the show (and the next two seasons or so) makes Sam's hiding the whole demon blood from Dean at least a little more understandable but also 10000x more horrifying. (for reference, Dean doesn't learn about the demon blood thing that Sam learns in this episode until 4.03 when Azazel himself tells him...) But this episode: After so long of Sam and Dean having no idea what this big bad “Save Sam or else you'll have to kill him” threat that had been hanging over Dean all season, it's finally rendered irrelevant as a “choice” in this episode. We get some awful, awful “I didn't have a choice,” and the Special Children Hunger Games. Plus the demise of the Roadhouse (and Ash), and the reminder that Kripke hates letting his characters have nice things. We're watching Supernatural. Things referenced in this episode: The Superwiki page for this episode My tag for this episode The post I mention laying out my understanding of the YED's role in the larger canon of s1-5 (if you read nothing else from my links this week, read this. It's one of those “no, this isn't actually a plot hole if you look at it from this specific angle only” type explainers, and informs how I look at the rest of the series. Also, it's not THAT long lol.) The lyrics I reference playing when Dean walks into the cafe after Sam vanishes Casting sides for Jake Casting sides for Lily (both of which came from the Network Draft dated 2/26/07) Production Draft script dated 3/07/07, with Blue Revision pages dated 3/08/07 The Devil's Road Map featurette on the s2 Blu Ray I did my best to keep this one short, knowing next week we're in for a roller coaster of agony. Have a good one, everybody... :'D --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/spngeorg/support

You may or may not have heard before about the infamous folklore that is the Boyfriend Sweater Curse, also known as The Sweater Curse. The Love Sweater Curse occurs when a knitter undertakes to knit a jumper for a significant other, and this leads to the breakdown of the relationship - sometimes before the recipient has even received the gift! In a 2005 survey, 15% of knitters reported having experienced this very curse. 41% believed that it might be true. SO it's worth knowing about, even if you don't believe in it. This subject came up as I am about to -finally - undertake knitting a jumper for my massive husband. On the way to the knitting, the topic of Wiganese food is covered in some depth, including the Wigan Kebab, Babbie's Yed and Smack Barm Pey Wet. It is via this high carb and extremely beige route that one's Southern husband - who has some very questionable chip habits - came to earn the honour of having his very first jumper knitted for him. Remember - it's a barm cake. It's not a bap, bread roll, bread cake, cob, muffin or any of that nonsense. We'll have no trouble, here! Who is responsible for the global climate crisis? The plaintiffs in the case, Juliana v. U.S., argue that much of the blame lies at the feet of the federal government for enabling fossil fuel companies to alter the planet’s climate. In this episode of the YED podcast, Paul Rink explains that the Juliana case is … Continue reading Protecting the Rights of Kids: Paul Rink and Doug Kysar on Climate Litigation →
The Winchesters are in a tough spot this week in Season 1, Episode 21, "Salvation." Meg's killing John's friends in order to get him to hand over the Colt, which Sam and Dean need in order to kill the Yellow-Eyed Demon, who's planning to attack a family in Salvation, Iowa. The episode ends with John getting captured by Meg and her demon brother and Sam trying to run into a burning building to get revenge on the YED. Dean does the Plot Recap and the Best Song (of the Episode AND the Series), Amanda does the Commentary, in which she talks about why "Carry On Wayward Son" has been her favorite song since she was 12, and Sammy helps Dean explain how Plushies Make Everything Better. Christopher (@stoneymonster) and Elecia (@logicalelegance) discuss embedded systems education and project documentation. Elecia wrote about her love of notebooks on the https://www.embedded.fm/blog-index. yEd, for when you don’t have Visio. Asciiflow.com, for when you don’t have yEd (or you want to put diagrams in your comments) We talked about many different documents and tried to note design vs implementation, product vs engineering vs user, and why we wanted them. We didn’t mention mechanical things because, ya know, software engineers. Some documentation we mentioned: Product documentation Schematics with block diagrams and comments. Also a GPIO to function spreadsheet. UI flow when the system has a screens (Balsamiq for wireframe testing UIs) SW spec and design doc: what do we plan to build and what are the tricky parts SW configuration and SW developer docs: how to rebuild the computer that can build the code from scratch, also notes on debugging methodology User manual: Usually not written by SW but may need SW’s patient input Code comments: Functions and files get 5Ws: who, what, why, when, where, and how. Who should call this? What will its effect be? (“What will it do” but not in line by line detail!) How does it work? Why does it work this way? When should it be called? Where are its parameters? (“What” works here too but “where” is nice to remind you to check your memory assumptions.) Repository checkin comments Style guide (Such as Google’s or PEP) Manufacturing docs and tests docs Adafruit and Sparkfun both write good documentation, writing to users about how to use their code. Elecia likes Adafruit’s sensor library as a good set of code to review (including how much is in their docs vs their code).
