Brad Gehl on Summer School, Q School, Caddy School

Brad Gehl returns to the pod to catch up on developmental tour life, or lack there of over the past year. The downtime created time to make a film, Summer School, which crosses the skateboarding and golf cultures. We discuss the joys of city golf at Canal Shores (Chicago) and Rancho Park (LA). Brad is dripped in a new LPGA #HoodieForGolf designed by Michelle Wie-West benefitting the LPGA Renee Powell Fund and the Clearview Legacy Foundation. The former provides needs-based grants to LPGA*USGA Girls Golf programs to help girls in Black communities participate in golf. This in the name of Renee Powell, the second Black player on the LPGA Tour. The latter helps endow and preserve the Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, OH. Renee’s father, Bill, established the golf club to counter racial discrimination he encountered returning from World War II. Today, Renee is the head pro at Clearview. Brad has been on the bag recently for Michelle. He talks about the experience and his takeaways for his game. He also looped for Justin Thomas at the PNC Championship where Justin and his father, Mike, took down the championship. Brad read one put and tried to give one line off the tee. Oh, and he range-findered a bunker on a Par 3 that led to the greatest meme video in the history of professional golf. Fluff caddy sighting. Brad’s take? “Quickest first step in caddying.” He discusses how COVID has affected the developmental tours and his plan for 2021. HANGRY PROJECT & SUMMER SCHOOL. The Hangry Project was started by Brad and provides a stocked refrigerator at skate parks. This had led to meetings at city halls and now a short film “Summer School” that he wrote, shot and produced. Premieres in June. And check out the swag… approved by Augie - Swag Connoisseur. We end with some glory days of junior and high school golf. Always fun to relive the moments of being a kid, especially when some of those kids are playing and winning on tour.

After a week off-ish, we’re back in action. Life got in the way for Stu and Augie, but the latter was able to make a couple wagers, one being on the larger side. Quick recaps of the past two week. The Cannonball Players Of The Week keep making cuts in the big pool, but are getting passed. The Waste Management Phoenix Open is not only a zero waste event but also a zero betting win event (there’s more jokes in there, but you know… beer and gelatin weed). As for Pebble, Stu didn’t lose what he didn’t put in the middle - sometimes you just need a week off. Augie bet big (relative to $1 units) on a Chicagoland native - free money. If you followed on IG, Twitter, et al, you would have made easy money too. Not even a sweat.

A lot of big names this week, strong field - gonna be fun to watch, especially with some skin on the line. The biggest question remains that we didn’t discuss - do we take the hole in one bet or not. Augie and Uncle Stu enter the Cannonball Golf team into a season long one and done pool. The catch - all players must be chosen before the first even. A guy chooses not to play an event, tough shit. But we have the secret sauce - Stu’s pivot table for all results going back 8 years so we can see the likelihood of a player choosing an event and their finishes. For some events, we leave it to the golf gods and flip a coin. Karma comes back quickly on Stu for saying Cameron Champ is a has been. And we decide putting the term “retrench” into our on-course smack talk repertoire will create an advantage during future on-course gambling. So grab yourself a few beers, pop a gummy to open up those brain receptors, and sit back as the debate ensues on who to slate from the Sony Open to the Wyndham Championship. But we have to start with the majors and Players, along with the WGCs. And then the remainder. Cannonball Comin’

We highlight the plethora of amenities and technology available for use during the cold winter months in the Chicagoland area. Eric also helps clarify the difference between Trackman and TopTracer technologies (don’t worry, they have both!), and Ben discusses the “What’s In My Bag” phone app. We discuss the Mistwood Golf Club (Romeoville, IL) in detail. A prestigious public course that also has memberships available - including unprecedented year round access to the Dome. Eric walks us through the Performance Center (5,000 sq. ft.), the Clubhouse (20k+ sq. ft.), and Augie shares his regretful Trackman story - it was in his backyard the whole time! Ben shares the History of Mistwood Golf Course and tells us about the owner’s - Jim McWethy - vision and Scottish Heritage. He also speaks to the Architect - Ray Hearn - who designed, and re-designed the course, and modeled it in the Scottish and St. Andrews feel. The course offers 19 stacked sod-wall bunkers! Eric provides additional details on the multi-phased renovations, and Uncle Stu speaks to some elements of design planning. Eric tells us how Mistwood sets a Guinness Book of World Records (YUM)! They were featured on Golf Channel for the delicious feat. Ben touches on the non-golf related sides of Mistwood - on course human 5Ks, a dog 5K “Ruff Run” - who doesn’t like dogs?! They are embracing the family side of golf. Ben rounds out the Mistwood portfolio with Green St. Grille (Bensonville, IL) and Joliet Ballroom (Joliet, IL). We double back to speak more about McWethy’s Tavern (Romeoville, IL). “It’s filled with rich Mahogany”....ya, “I heard these guys hand beat the wood with machetes!” Cannonball Golf Happenings [1:11:30] Augie and Uncle Stu dive into more details of the TaylorMade demo day experience at Mistwood Golf Dome as both boys hit the new M5 / M6 drivers. Thank you to Donald Tanski of TaylorMade for stepping us through the fitting experience. “We talked about a lot about the Twist Face last year…..but this year, there is a resin injected Twist Face”. Augie believes it’s “steroids”, Uncle Stu believes its “whatever Tiger has injected in his backbone”. Engage Rocket Thrusters! The boys end in usual fashion with their song additions.

We crack some Zombie Dust to recap two large golf events - Tiger vs Phil and the last chance at golf glory before Thanksgiving - and the wins and losses coming out of both. We discuss the lead up to the match which was promising the week of - HBO 24/7, great personalities, new technology, shit talking, gambling galore on the course and for the viewers. The pregame was entertaining yet lawless. We express our (and seemingly the general public’s) opinion on The Match downtime between shots and the production value… Charlie is our subject matter expert on video production due to his past experience in video production. We feel there were some opportunities missed for great tv moments…. i.e. get Charles Barkley on the damn course! Then, we recap the First Annual Glory’s Last Turkey Shoot. Due to weather/SNOW, the venue was moved from our favorite Ravisloe to Sydney R Marovitz - a Chicago Park District 9 holer directly on Lake Michigan (Augie geeks out on the weather phenomena that caused Marovitz to be one of the only courses in Chicagoland to be snowless). The biggest story line from Glory’s Last was the emergency 9 that happened after the competition and the possibility that it could be the last round of golf that Charlie ever plays due to a very tough loss. Song adds - the theme is the (Charlie’s living room) studio Christmas decorations - Cee Lo Green “What Christmas Means To Mean” and from Ty Webb’s famed Christmas movie, Bing Crosby “Mele Kalikimaka”. There’s an off-topic basketball outtake from pre-production following Carl Spackler.

Stu discusses some Tiger audio books he’s been listening to on his commute to work - including the topic of Tiger almost leaving the game to join the military. Stu and Augie do some vig-less betting with each other on The Match main event and side bets - along with some life/parenthood betting. Lot of action, lot of action. We also discuss Phil’s future, his past (i.e. his listed weight on his profile) and Brandel Chamblee saying Tiger never goes low. As professional segue-ers, we smoothly transition into recapping the event of the year - The Fall Scramble at Prairie Landing. It started with controversy and much adversity involving beer and on course events. We set off to hopefully make the most of it - and in the end, you couldn’t write the script in Hollywood. Born from the fall scramble comes a brand new event - the first annual Glory’s Last Turkey Shoot… if you can’t find it, make it (trademarks pending). The ep is fueled by Half Acre GoneAway IPA. After hyping it all year, it’s finally time for the official preview of the Fall Scramble at Prairie Landing where Charlie will defend his 2x and defending long drive championship and our group will defend skins glory (the only payout in 2017). Augie took a couple go-arounds at Sox Park (we refrain from using field sponsor titles since they change often unlike Wrigley Field - Go Cubs) in his first experience playing Stadium Links. No nitro pours but there were Nitros, home runs, human range pickers and MLB inflated beer prices… followed by a super late night casino run. Charlie details his derailed attempt to play Ravisloe and audible to Lost Marsh. A very industrial area serves as the end to a great ball streak - find out how it all went down. For every end there is a new beginning - and this one might be yellow. We review the Ryder Cup European ass kicking of the Americans. You may or may not have heard of the Moliwood pairing on the pod prior to it actually happening. Hey - sometimes we know what we’re talking about. In Tour news, Kevin Tway comes up with his 1st tour victory - we detail his lengthy path to his well-earned W #Gainz. Charlie has a dream that includes Tway. Koepka (Augie’s horse $$$) won Player of the Year - unshockingly. Him and DJ try to emulate Moliwood. Lagunitas Citrusinensis fuels the ep. Song adds include Charlie’s double feature of “Save Room” and “Stereo” by John Legend. Augie goes back to the Eric Church well with the newly released “Desperate Man” title track.
