From her start playing paddle tennis on the streets of Harlem as a young teenager to her eleven Grand Slam tennis wins to her professional golf career, Althea Gibson became the most famous black sportswoman of the mid-twentieth century. In her unprecedented athletic career, she was the first African American to win titles at the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. In this comprehensive biography, Ashley Brown narrates the public career and private struggles of Althea Gibson (1927-2003). Based on extensive archival work and oral histories, Serving Herself: The Life and Times of Althea Gibson (Oxford UP, 2023) sets Gibson's life and choices against the backdrop of the Great Migration, Jim Crow racism, the integration of American sports, the civil rights movement, the Cold War, and second wave feminism. Throughout her life Gibson continuously negotiated the expectations of her supporters and adversaries, including her patrons in the black-led American Tennis Association, the white-led United States Lawn Tennis Association, and the media, particularly the Black press and community's expectations that she selflessly serve as a representative of her race.  An incredibly talented, ultra-competitive, and not always likeable athlete, Gibson wanted to be treated as an individual first and foremost, not as a member of a specific race or gender. She was reluctant to speak openly about the indignities and prejudices she navigated as an African American woman, though she faced numerous institutional and societal barriers in achieving her goals. She frequently bucked conventional norms of femininity and put her career ahead of romantic relationships, making her personal life the subject of constant scrutiny and rumors. Despite her major wins and international recognition, including a ticker tape parade in New York City and the covers of Sports Illustrated and Time, Gibson endeavored to find commercial sponsorship and permanent economic stability. Committed to self-sufficiency, she pivoted from the elite amateur tennis circuit to State Department-sponsored goodwill tours, attempts to find success as a singer and Hollywood actress, the professional golf circuit, a tour with the Harlem Globetrotters and her own professional tennis tour, coaching, teaching children at tennis clinics, and a stint as New Jersey Athletics Commissioner. As she struggled to support herself in old age, she was left with disappointment, recounting her past achievements decades before female tennis players were able to garner substantial earnings. A compelling life and times portrait, Serving Herself offers a revealing look at the rise and fall of a fiercely independent trailblazer who satisfied her own needs and simultaneously set a pathbreaking course for Black athletes. Recently, at the Katie Ledecky Invite, a swim meet hosted by Nation's Capital Swim Club and named for their most notable alumna, history was made. Katie Ledecky herself participated in the last night of competition, swimming in the 1,650 freestyle. The 14x Olympic medalist wowed her hometown crowd as she threw down a monstrous 14:59.62, breaking her own American and US Open records in the event and making her the first woman in history to dip under the 15-minute barrier. This swim not only rippled across the entire current swimming landscape, but it will undoubtedly inspire swimmers for years to come. SwimSwam spoke with two young girls, Milly Birch and Emma Stein, who were at the venue during this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Milly, 14, swam in the lane next to Katie during the 1,650 while Emma, 11, was on deck watching with her friends. Listen to how Katie Ledecky is not only breaking down barriers for herself, but showing many more that they can do the same.

The guest on this episode of The Back of the Range is Matt Vogt, a dentist and accomplished mid-amateur golfer who earned one of the most memorable stories in 2025: qualifying for and competing in the U.S. Open at Oakmont. The conversation covers Vogt’s journey from a modest upbringing in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, to his college golf days at Butler University, and his later-life resurgence into competitive amateur golf. He recounts his U.S. Open Qualifying experience, the emotional significance of his late father during that run, and the whirlwind aftermath of suddenly finding himself part of golf’s biggest stage. Vogt offers candid reflections on balancing a demanding professional career in dentistry with elite-level amateur competition, sharing how he relies on supportive colleagues and flexible scheduling to make it work. He opens up about nerves, lessons learned, and the surreal experience of teeing off at Oakmont in front of thousands—a moment where adrenaline met disbelief. The discussion also touches on broader themes in amateur golf: the evolution of college recruiting, the rising standard of competition, the mid-amateur “fraternity,” and the ongoing debate about reinstated former professionals competing in mid-am events. The conversation ends lightheartedly, with banter about future tournaments like the Gasparilla Invitational and the Jones Cup, showing Vogt’s grounded personality and enthusiasm for competing with his peers. The crew also relives Sinner–Alcaraz's unforgettable Roland Garros epic, Coco Gauff's and Iga Świątek's seasons, Sabalenka's resilience, and the booming depth of American tennis on both tours. Finally, they zoom out to why tennis is “having a massive moment” globally and why that makes the structural mistakes and missed opportunities even more frustrating. In this episode of the Propulsion Swimming Podcast, we talk about 2025 Toyota U.S. Open Championships in Austin, Texas, where there were some stunning swims.Summer McIntosh and Leon Marchand made the biggest headlines. McIntosh roared back into competition with the second fastest 400m freestyle in history, with a 3:55.37. She then closed out the meet with a dominant 200m butterfly in 2:02.62, the fourth fastest ever. Marchand was equally impressive. He dipped into the 400m free, not his usual specialty, and clocked a lifetime best of 3:44.70. Then he wrapped up with a triumphant 200m butterfly in 1:52.57.We also talk about other great swims including Kate Douglass in the 200m IM and 200m Breaststroke and Hubert Kos in the 100m and 200m backstroke, as well as how deep U.S. swimming is becoming - not just at the top, but throughout the roster. Recording Date: November 11, 2025 at the 2025 Fall Business Sports Luncheon. A Series hosted by Chris Holman since Joe Dumars spoke in 2004. Location: Capital Region International Airport (LAN) Todd Martin - Executive Leader, Keynote Speaker, Coach, and Retired Tennis Professional Todd Martin: From World-Class Competitor to Visionary Leader In this video with Todd's presentation: Todd emphasized resilience as a foundation of high performance: in tennis and business, setbacks are inevitable — but it's how you respond, adapt, and learn that separates champions. He stressed the value of team leadership and culture even in individualized fields. As a former World No. 4 and Davis Cup champion, he showed how being a trusted leader and mentor builds long-term value beyond individual wins. Todd highlighted the importance of innovation and reinvention — transitioning from pro-athlete to CEO, mentor and business strategist, he described how staying curious and leveraging one's legacy can create fresh opportunities. He discussed community impact and purpose — noting how he founded his youth-leadership nonprofit out of his early experiences, and how business leaders can strengthen their brand by intentionally giving back and aligning values with actions. Todd Martin is a former Olympian and World No. 4-ranked tennis player whose career was defined by excellence, leadership, and impact. He reached the singles finals of both the 1994 Australian Open and the 1999 US Open and was a cornerstone of the U.S. Davis Cup team from 1994 to 2002—helping secure the championship in 1995. Recognized by his peers for his integrity and insight, Martin served eight years as President of the ATP Tour Player Council, advocating for players and shaping the future of the sport. After retiring from professional play, he transitioned into coaching, mentoring U.S. Olympic Silver Medalist Mardy Fish and a young Novak Djokovic. Martin's post-playing career has been marked by visionary leadership. He served as CEO of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Head of Tennis at Beemok Capital, and is the Founder and President of Todd Martin Tennis. In May 2025, he joined Swing Racquet + Paddle as Chief Strategy and Operations Officer, continuing his commitment to innovation in racquet sports. Beyond the court and boardroom, Martin has made a lasting impact in his hometown of Lansing, Michigan. In 1993, he co-founded Todd Martin Youth Leadership, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering at-risk youth through tennis, education, life skills, and leadership development. For over 30 years, the organization has been a beacon of opportunity and growth for the community. Leave an Amazon Rating or Review for my New York Times Bestselling book, Make Money Easy!Check out the full episode: https://greatness.lnk.to/1846"You get to Harvard, the rich kids still don't wanna be friends with you. Why not? Because you can't afford to split the table at the club on Friday night." - Vivian TuVivian Tu pulls back the curtain on something most people never talk about: why hard work and even elite credentials aren't enough to build real wealth. She walks through the brutal reality of class barriers with stories from Wall Street, where they literally have different names for people who are technically good at their jobs versus those who were born knowing which fork to use. The Harvard example hits hard because it exposes how even at the peak of merit-based achievement, you can still be locked out of the rooms where wealth actually happens. Not because you're not smart enough or didn't work hard enough, but because you can't afford to split a dinner bill at the club. She talks about proximity to wealth as learning a completely different language, one that teaches you not just who to know but how deals get discussed, how real wealth presents itself, and the tiny cultural signals that separate people who grew up with money from those performing wealth. What makes this conversation valuable is how practical Vivian gets about navigating these realities. She explains how her own wealthy friends opened doors to opportunities she never could have accessed otherwise, from US Open tickets on a bank's dime to connecting with the right business managers and accountants. But more than that, she teaches you how to spot the difference between real wealth and fake rich, breaking down the fundamental truth that people with actual money aren't trying to impress you. This isn't about becoming bitter or cynical about class barriers. It's about understanding the game well enough to play it smarter, recognizing that the path to wealth exists for anyone but looks completely different depending on where you start and who you learn from along the way.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter: http://www.greatness.com/newsletter Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Makenna Jones On "The Inner Game of Tennis"

Despite being the child of two professional tennis players, Makenna Jones was never forced to play the game. Furthermore, she hated tennis as she never felt good enough, felt her standard was so high and didn't have fun playing the game. Ironically, when her family moved and she was without a soccer club, she decided to choose tennis. Makenna often felt tremendous stress and pressure to win every match which typically led to panic, negative thought spirals and very critical thoughts about herself. However, when she focused on having fun, her performance excelled. She played for five years at UNC Chapel Hill (2017-2021), earning a top singles ranking of #2 and a doubles ranking of #1. She won 4 ACC titles and 3 National Indoor titles. She also made it to the professional level reaching a career-high ranking of No. 236 in singles and No. 107 in doubles and played in some of the world's biggest tournaments, including the US Open, Wimbledon, Indian Wells BNP, and Miami Open. Makenna shares how her mindset played a key role in both her performance and her rocky relationship with her sport. It wasn't until she read the classic sports psychology book, "The Inner Game of Tennis" where she learned how to try less and let her body do what it already can do. Through her ups and downs, she has learned to get through struggle with grace, joy and gratitude. @kennajones14
