Subscribe on Apple Podcasts — more platforms coming soon. After a year break from podcasting, I've finally started anew with The Rebooting Show, a weekly audio and video discussion that goes into the details of building sustainable media businesses with those building them. (The video is still in the works, and it will take a bit of time before the podcast feed is available on Apple and Spotify. Apologies.) The goal for the show is to focus on the mechanics and execution since I believe too much is generally made of “vision” in the media business. There aren't a ton of secrets; those who succeed tend to simply excel at executing the details. My goal is to get beyond the PR spin that's, unfortunately, a feature of most business podcasts. I always knew a podcast would likely suck if multiple PR people showed up with the guest. It was nearly guaranteed if the guest then took out a sheet of talking points. You'd be surprised how many big media executives feel uncomfortable simply answering questions about what, in theory, they're responsible for doing. My plan is to break the podcast into mini-seasons of five episodes focused on a theme. This first season is focused on modern B2B media businesses, a topic near to my own experience. B2B has long been treated as something of a backwater, at best a stepping stone to consumer titles. That's always sold B2B short. There are many terrible, old school B2B publishers and events companies, but there are a new crop of modern players emerging who are still focused on going deep on the ins and outs of their business areas but do so with a higher focus on in-depth reporting, slick packaging and diverse business models. In many ways, I think consumer media can learn more from B2B than vice versa since B2B has always focused on direct connections (often through email), communities and diverse business models that aren't reliant on advertising. That's why I wanted to talk to Adam White, the CEO of FOS, home to Front Office Sports and Sports Section. Adam started Front Office Sports while still a student at the University of Miami in 2014. His cobbled-together Wix site was meant as a foot into a sports marketing career but grew to the point where Adam made the plunge into starting a business out of it.I've always liked Front Office Sports and how Adam and his team have thoughtfully built the company and continued to execute. In our conversation, we discuss the origins of Front Office Sports, the white space they saw in the market, their approach to differentiation, and the decision to build off their B2B base with newsletters aimed at a wider consumer audience. Some highlights from our discussion:The importance of talking to your audienceFOS began as an informational interview project Adam did one summer during college. Putting them online seemed a no-brainer. There wasn't a product roadmap or a business plan, but Adam listened to what he was being told. Many of the interviews veered toward career advice, giving him insight into needs in the market. “What they told me all the time was these young professionals that work in sports don't get accolades.” That led to what in retrospect was FOS's breakout moment: The Rising 25 awards in 2017. “It's been the most impactful thing we've done,” he said. Not having money is a giftInvestment firm Steins backed FOS in 2018, but Front Office Sports took a bootstrapped path. That turned out to be a blessing in disguise in retrospect. “If we had the money before we did the informational interviews, we wouldn't be having this conversation. We would have never figured it out. They told us everything we should do.” That gave FOS a

The Science PT was created by Erik Meira, PT, DPT and is about exploring the application of science to physical therapy practice. Science is an attempt to understand nature as it is, not as it is believed to be. Understanding that beliefs and expectations should never be held too dearly is the first step in critical thinking. There is ALWAYS an alternate hypothesis to consider in every situation. Erik Meira is a physical therapist with Black Diamond Physical Therapy in Portland, Oregon. He is a Board Certified Sports Clinical Specialist and an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with extensive experience in the management of sports injuries at many different levels. He also created and oversees the PT Podcast Network. The son of an engineer and a school teacher, he developed a love of science at a young age often running home experiments comparing/contrasting the effectiveness of products such as detergents and preservatives. Before beginning physical therapy school he studied philosophy and psychology while geeking out on chemistry and physics courses. Although he follows medical science professionally, he is a fan of all fields of science, particularly particle physics and astrophysics. He began his rehab training at the University of Florida where he had the opportunity to be a student athletic trainer with Gator Football. After finishing his physical therapy degree, he moved on to The George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC where he overhauled the patient education program and became a physical therapy adviser to the GWU Medical School. After moving to Portland, OR he started his own private practice Elite Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine now called Black Diamond Physical Therapy. He also founded and directed the Northwest Society for Sports Medicine, a group of regional sports medicine providers who provided continuing education, professional support, and community outreach in the Pacific Northwest. Erik is extremely active in the Sports Section serving on the membership committee since 2005, followed by becoming the membership committee team coordinator in 2010. In 2008 he helped initiate, organize, and then chair the Hip Special Interest Group. Since 2012 he has been the Sports Section Program Chair for Combined Sections Meeting (CSM). He has authored several articles and textbook chapters and has lectured at conferences around the world sponsored through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, American Physical Therapy Association, and the National Athletic Trainers' Association covering topics such as the hip, knee, shoulder, exercise prescription, returning athletes to sport, science application, and PT practice business models. In his free time, he enjoys mountaineering, skiing/snowboarding, backpacking, and travel.

When I was a young teacher, I used to bring my newspaper to study hall. Students would perch on their desks and observe me like vultures. As soon as I was done with the Sports Section, or the Life Section, they would swoop down and devour it! Today, I'm not sure kids could identify a newspaper in a police lineup. What I loved the most about consuming the newspaper each day was the Comic's Page and the Editorial Cartoons. Unfortunately, I don't get a paper anymore. My exposure to comics has diminished significantly. I miss them!So...in this episode, I'll demonstrate how to revive this wonderful medium with the help of a tremendous tech tool called StoryboardThat. I'll also give non-humanities teachers an idea on how they could use it in their curriculum.
Kevin Bowen - Indianapolis native and from WFNI ESPN 107.5 / 1070 The Fan radio - joins the pod. Kevin was Charlie's high school teammate and picked up the JT shout out of Brad Gehl (see Episode 009) - the most underrated moment in sports history. We discuss Kevin's golf background, how he got his early education via the Sports Section of the print news paper, and how golf plays a role in his life today - including his godly admiration of Tiger. He has some hilarious junior golf stories, and is just full of all sorts of stories - making a career in sports journalism and media, Kevin is a sports encyclopedia from pro, college, high school and his personal experiences in sports and with athletes. It was enjoyable talking with Kevin, so hope you enjoy listening. As long as you keep tuning in, we'll keep teeing it up. Cannonball!

Episode 19 is with one of the hosts of Pain Science and Sensibility, Sandy Hilton. To be fair, Erik conducted the interview with Sandy back in March of 2015, before the idea of Pain Science and Sensibility was even conceived. Like Erik, Sandy is a Combines Sections Meeting program chair, he for Sports Section, she for the Section on Women’s Health, and they both happened to be in Washington, DC for the annual meeting for section program chairs. While they were there, they spent about an hour talking about her upbringing and path to get where she is today. Sandy is a practice owner that specializes in chronic pain and pelvic health in Chicago, Illinois. Her practice, Entropy Physio, is also known for bringing internationally recognized experts into their clinic to provide continuing education for physical therapists. I highly recommend you check out their website to see the amazing lineup they produce each year. The courses are affordable and open to any healthcare providers who want to attend. More information is available on their website.
I was greatly amused to find myself on the front page of the Sports section of our local paper, the Keene Sentinel, with a great article about our efforts to bring the sport of curling to Keene and the greater Monadnock region. Here's the article: http://www.sentinelsource.com/sports/local_sports/a-place-to-curl/article_9392cc54-6c8b-59a1-af79-cb117521716b.html and the Monadnock Curling Club site is at http://monadnockcurling.org/
Episode 9 is my sit down with Rob Manske. Rob is an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Wichita State University and the current vice president of the Sports Section of the American Physical Therapy Association (SPTS).
Erik sat down with new professional Amy Arundale. Less than a year out of school and she is already serving on a Sports Section committee and developing the exact career that she wanted. How did she do it? Well, in a nutshell, you just need to ask…
