Bernhard Langer, member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, looks back on his wins on U.S. soil that included 2 green jackets and a life-changing week at the 1983 Sea Pines Heritage event at Harbour Town. Bernhard recalls the joy of winning the 1983 Masters playing with Seve Ballesteros on the final day. Unknowingly using the Lord's name in vain during the Butler Cabin presentation, he began his personal faith journey the following week at a Tour bible study taught by Larry Moody. When he comfortably repeated as Masters Champion in 1993 by 4 over Chip Beck, he was able to invoke God's name in a positive way during his post-victory remarks. Mark Calcavecchia continues his story, "FORE the Good of the Game."

Rich reacts to Scottie Scheffler's meteoric rise in golf this year that culminated Sunday with his first major win at The Masters, and reflects on the tragic death of Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins at the age of 24. ESPN's Scott Van Pelt tells Rich why Scottie Scheffler, not Tiger Woods, was the Masters' story of the weekend after capturing the green jacket at Augusta National, recaps that magical moment on Sunday when Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa had back-to-back chip-ins from the bunker on the 18th hole, why Tiger should be commended for his return to competition despite finishing by shooting consecutive rounds of 78, and reveals what it's really like inside ANGC's storied Butler Cabin. Rich and the guys debate if the Lakers will be able to land a big name coach to replace the fired Frank Vogel, and Rich reveals some great inside information he learned with hosting a ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm” panel last night with big news about the show's future and which Oscar-winning actor turned down a cameo role in the HBO comedy. A Masters win brings with it many well-known traditions: an interview in Butler Cabin, the presentation of the coveted green jacket, the ascendance to the vaunted Champion's Locker Room. But most fans don't have a full appreciation for the whirlwind of activity that ensues once a golfer has secured a win at Augusta National. In this episode of Local Knowledge. Golf Digest's Dan Rapaport goes behind the scenes with the men who've been there to understand what really happens in the minutes, hours, and days following a Masters win, and why for them, it was both a blur and an indelible memory.

Hideki Matsuyama almost turned down his first chance to play the Masters. It was a month after a devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, disasters that killed thousands and destroyed much of the region he called home in March 2011.He decided to play a month later, only because he thought it would lift spirits.A decade later, he lifted his country again — becoming Japan's first man to win a golf major. Matsuyama's one-shot victory over Will Zalatoris at Augusta National made him the Masters champion, easily the biggest moment for the sport in his golf-crazed homeland."I can't say I'm the greatest," Matsuyama said. "However, I'm the first to win a major, and if that's the bar, then I've set it."He was the greatest this week at the Masters, bar none.History will say he won the tournament on Sunday with a final-round 73, but really, he won it on Saturday with a blistering finish that put him atop the leaderboard for good. He went 6-under on a seven-hole stretch of the back nine in the third round, the decisive spurt that nobody could match. Even the final margin on Sunday was perhaps a bit misleading; it only tightened up when Matsuyama made three bogeys in his final four holes, though the lead never seemed threatened.Matsuyama finished at 10-under, 278. Zalatoris was at 9 under, Jordan Spieth and Xander Schauffele were tied for third at 7 under, and Jon Rahm and Marc Leishman tied for fifth at 6 under. Justin Rose, who jumped out in front Thursday with a 65, finished seventh, five shots back."It's thrilling to think that there are a lot of youngsters in Japan watching today," Matsuyama said. "Hopefully in five, 10 years, when they get a little older, hopefully some of them will be competing on the world stage. But I still have a lot of years left, so they are going to have to compete against me still."Message to those kids: Good luck. Matsuyama is only 29.He moved from No. 25 to No. 14 in the world rankings, and will be welcomed back to Augusta National for Masters week for the rest of his life — one of the many perks that come once someone claims a green jacket."I think it's really good for the game of golf globally," Spieth said. "He's a great young player who inevitably was going to win major championships, in my opinion."It turned out to be a Masters finish like none other, capping a week that was memorable for who was there, who wasn't there for long and who couldn't be there at all.Lee Elder — the first Black player in the Masters when he broke the tournament's color barrier in 1975 — joined Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player for the ceremonial tournament-opening tee shots on Thursday morning. By the time nightfall arrived Friday, defending champion Dustin Johnson was done after missing the cut by two strokes. And five-time Masters winner Tiger Woods wasn't at Augusta National to play or even take part in the Champions dinner, his recovery from a car crash in Los Angeles ongoing at his Florida home.Woods wasn't seen. Not long after Matsuyama won, he was heard, or at least read."Making Japan proud Hideki," Woods wrote on Twitter. "Congratulations on such a huge accomplishment for you and your country. This historical (at)TheMasters win will impact the entire golf world."He's not wrong.Japan is already set to play host to the Olympics this summer, delayed a year because of the coronavirus and still a thorny subject for many in that country who wonder if the Tokyo Games should be held at all.The golf event at those Olympics is scheduled for the Kasumigaseki Country Club, the place where Matsuyama won as an amateur to secure that first trip to Augusta National in 2011 — where he visited Butler Cabin to receive the prize as the low amateur that week. A decade later, he returned to Butler Cabin, this time for Johnson to slip the green jacket over his shoulders."I'm really looking forward to the Olympic Games in Tokyo," Matsuyama said. "If I am on the team, and maybe it looks like I will be, I'll do my be...

There may be no azaleas, patrons or famous roars ringing around Augusta this week but when you're in level 5 lockdown in Ireland, you'll take what you can get. And what we're getting is a Masters like no other, an invite to Augusta National in autumn and one of the most timely interjections of sporting heaven we could wish for at this time. The last time the country found itself in a level 5 lockdown, sport was off the agenda but what we pined for back in April is very much on the calendar for a unique November celebration, an escape from all things COVID and hopefully, without pushing our luck too much, a first chance to see an Irishman don that famous Green Jacket in the Butler Cabin come Sunday. Our website has been inundated with all the latest from Augusta so far this week and our special digital edition Masters magazine dropped on Tuesday, packed with quality content from drives up Magnolia Lane, past and present. Our access this week has been nothing short of incredible and we're delighted to release our latest podcast to further preview what we have no qualms in admitting is our favourite week in the golfing calendar. Joining us on the show is a three-pronged line-up, headlined by live Masters contender Graeme McDowell who returns to Augusta National for the first time since 2016. We have former European Ryder Cup winning Captain Paul McGinley with his take on the runners and riders, plus his idea of the winner ahead of Thursday's opening round and we also feature an extra special interview with Mallow amateur, James Sugrue who joined us after his practice round on Tuesday to discuss his first impressions of arguably the most famous venue in golf. We hope you enjoy the listen and as ever, make sure you stay ahead of the game this week at IrishGolfer.ie
Doug Ghim (4:00), Kirk Minihane (55:50), and Jeff McNeil (106:02) join the show. It’s a jam-packed one. First, PGA TOUR youngster Doug Ghim takes us through the behind-the-scenes of finishing low amateur at the 2018 Masters and getting through the Butler Cabin ceremony, hilarious high school golf stories, and the windy conditions in Bermuda. Then, Kirk Minihane goes deep into the one true thing he loves: the Masters. We talk favorites, who’s likable and who’s not, and also revisit Riggs’ emotional Pinehurst departure. Finally, New York Met all-star Jeff McNeil discusses the upcoming Barstool Classic Championship at Pinehurst (which he’s playing in), the Mets new ownership, and some inside baseball on anticipating pitches.
Let's reminisce about that Thursday you spent at Augusta National. Oh, you didn’t? The year Tiger won his 5th? Welp, Charlie did. Charlie starts with his trip down south with the Top 25 university courses he played and whiskey he drank as the anticipation builds for Thursday. After an early morning drive that sounds like something out of a fictional novel, his experience unlike any other included the ceremonial tee shot (sunrise golf), merchandise (of course), walking the entire course, brushing shoulders with Augie-flow-favorite Tommy Fleetwood (almost), finding out who no-cell-phones actually applies to, insider information from an Augusta Nat’l looper (a caddie, a jock, a pro jock) including a game of “what’s more dangerous”, and yes, food and beer. More you say? Ok, there’s more. The back nine is where Charlie has his “oh shit” moment on the hallowed grounds. Chairs on 18 green... oh he’s got that too with more close encounters. Pull up a chair, grab some beers, fire up the flames in Butler Cabin as we enter the Glory Trail to Augusta.
