    235: Value What You Have

    I shared a big announcement the last 2 episodes. The main message of it was that the Enjoy Life Podcast is going to take a break. I am going to take a 6 month break from creating these podcast episodes so that I can focus more of my attention and time in an area that I believe I can have a far greater impact on people's lives. You know if you focus on everything, then you focus on nothing. And I have been trying to focus on too many things recently. That led to me not being as effective as I could be. I believe narrowing my focus will help me have a greater impact and help people and families live the lives they want. So, the podcast will take a break. But, connect with me on Twitter. I am going to take a 6 month break from creating these podcast episodes so that I can focus more of my attention and time in an area that I believe I can have a far greater impact on people's lives. You know if you focus on everything, then you focus on nothing. Well, I have been trying to focus on too many things recently. That led to me not being as effective as I could be. I believe narrowing my focus will help me have a greater impact and help people and families live the lives they want. So, the podcast will take a break. But, connect with me on Twitter. And I'd love to hear from you there and share more about my shift to make a greater impact too.   Today's Episode: I'm taking off to camp at one of my favorite state parks with my family. I've been looking forward to it.  What do you need? A little fun? Relaxation? Or if you're struggling with ways to care for yourself. Whatever you need for yourself, do it.    Really caring for yourself so that you can perform at your best is important so that you can live your best life. This is your life. You can make it what you want. But, you have to be intentional with what you do.  One of the best ways I found for me to live the life I want is to schedule the things I need. Not just the things I need to do, accomplish, take care of. Yes, all those productive and responsible things are important. But, what's also very important are the things I need to do for and with my family and myself.    If I simply focus on being productive, then I will miss out on the self-care and quality time that truly makes life worth living.    Whatever your best life looks like, make sure you do the things you need to do to make it happen. Schedule what you need. And do it. 

    233: Don't Put It Off

    Major announcement. I loved creating this podcast for you. It has been my passion for the last 6 years. Thank you for joining in, listening, and many of you taking part by reaching out to me, subscribing, and following on social. My focus has always been to help people make positive changes, create the future they want, and live their best lives. That hasn't changed at all. Over the last few weeks, I've been thinking about how I can make a greater impact. I'm going to focus my time and attention on sharing how people can create their future and live their best lives in a more direct way.  What does that mean? I will take a hiatus from the podcast. And am planning on returning Jan of 2023. Old episodes will still be available. Download any ‌you want to keep access to. Subscribe because I may come back with some powerful lessons to share with you. And connect with me on Twitter. I am sharing a lot more there. And I'll be sharing simple things you can do to live your best life and you can connect with me there directly to talk about possible next steps that may be fit for you and your life to make it what you want. I hope to hear from there.    And on to today's episode. Make the most of your time. This is just like the major reason I'm making a shift in how I share my message. I have to make the most of the limited time I have. The same I believe should be true for you. Make the most of your time.  Time is short. But, you have enough time to focus on your priorities.  It's never as long as it may seem at the moment. Still, you always have enough time to focus on your most important priority. As long as you give your best.  One of my mentors said something that stuck with me.   Laziness creates busyness.   If you approach life as though you simply have plenty of time, you may end up putting off doing what you should do now. You can call that procrastination. Procrastination is simply putting off doing what you know you should do to make the progress you want in an area. Maybe you don't feel like doing the work. Or, it's not as comfortable as doing something else.  When you put off what you know you really need to do, it doesn't get done. Later on down the road, you'll have a scramble to catch up. That's where Laziness creates busyness.  Original message on this episode was going to be “Watch out! You only have 13.” One of my mentors shared about only having 13 summers with his kids and how he needed to cherish and make the most of them.    You need to take action. What is it you want? What kind of life do you want to live?  Take action toward it today. What can you do now?    You have enough time to focus on your priorities. But, really focus on them and do what needs to be done. Otherwise, time will pass and you'll end up having to scramble trying to catch up and it just may be too late.

Far too often, other people discredit the importance of the ‌small actions they take regularly. It's those small steps that will either be the ticket to the exact life you want or staying stuck where you're at or worse off. How to get moving: Give yourself a specific time Break into chunks (by importance, temporal, smallest piece) Just do it. It won't be perfect. You can't improve in a vacuum.    There was a class where students were learning how to sculpt clay. For the final exam, the teacher gave the students a choice of how he would grade their test. Either based on quantity or quality. The students who picked quality only needed to create one pot, but I needed to be the absolute best they could make. The other students in the quantity group simply needed to create as many pots as they could and the quality wouldn't impact their grade.    What's stopping you from taking action toward your goals?    Not good enough? Want to get it just right? Don't have time to do it all?   What's the next small step you can take toward the life you want? Toward achieving your big goal?  Set a specific time. And do it.

If not, you're probably in the wrong place. If you want to live your best life, that's excellent because that is what this episode and series are all about.   Your environment has a huge impact on the life you live and experience.  This could be the physical environment. You want to be in a healthy environment. Clean air, water, and such. But, the people make up a major part of the impact your environment will have on you, your life, and your future.  Associations (people)   Some of them you chose Friends Mentors   Many are more passive Work Clubs/Hobbies Neighbors School Kid's school Default Family Relatives In-laws Other   What can you do?   Prioritize good environments and good associations. Acknowledge the power and influence they have.    Extreme example: If you were an alcoholic, would it be wise for you to hang out with people while they were drinking or for you to hang out at a bar? NO.   Why not? Because being around that behavior can influence your behavior. The ‌same is true for all other not so healthy or positive behaviors. Talked about the power of words. Hang around people that speak their negative mindsets and that will impact you too. Hang around people who have given up on their goals, don't strive to improve or be their best, don't care about living a good life? What do you think will happen? Do you think you'll get them to change their ways or could they possibly, ‌over time, influence you, your thinking, and your actions?    Choose to be in an environment that is helping you live your best life. It is that powerful.    Recently, I pursued a mentor to help me build an additional income for my family. Yes, I wanted his advice and guidance, which has become invaluable. But, a huge part of what I knew I needed more of was the positive, constructive, encouraging environment that being on his team brought. The association with a more future focused group of people has helped me a lot. Sometimes you may need to remove what's not helpful. Other times, you can add what is helpful.  What adjustments can you make to your environment or the people you surround yourself with that can help you live your best life?

If not, you're probably in the wrong place. If you want to live your best life, that's excellent because that is what this episode and series are all about. If you hear something enough times, you'll begin accepting it. Once you accept it enough, you may begin believing it. Once you believe it enough, it will change your actions. Once your actions change enough, your life will begin changing.   It can all start with the words you hear.     Each one of us hears many words each day. Most of them we do not specifically choose to hear. We just hear them.    With all the power that those words can have and the impact that ultimately can make on our lives, we probably should pay a little attention to what they are and what they are doing. Right? Words lead to thoughts, belief, and actions. Now is the time to become intentional.  Now is the time to choose your words.   What words should you pay attention to?  Words you put into your mind Words you say Words you think Words you write Text  Social Email To yourself Words you repeat   Changing your words leads changing your belief.   What can you do? Pay attention to the words you use. Notice when you complain. Or say negative things about yourself or others.    When do you doubt yourself or your abilities?   What do you put into your mind?    It's time for you to combat the negative words.    What helps me I have a note card. It has my goals, priorities, my values, positive messages for myself. I don't put a lot of fluff on it. Any time I ‌see or say something negative out loud or in my head, I can look at my notecard. And those truths remind me of what is really true. That I have powerful goals that are worth my absolute best. And that I can accomplish great things as long as I give my best. Simply reminding myself of what I need to hear helps me to do the work to live the life I want. The same is true for you.    Remember, words are powerful. Choose them well.    What are you putting into your mind? Are you choosing your words?

Maybe one that was just new to you? Did you ‌see it all over the place after you got it? Over my years, I've had a few different vehicles. Some were more popular and weren't. But, the same funny thing happened with each one. As soon as I started driving it, I saw that same car or truck all over the place.  Now, did everyone else go out and get that same used vehicle I got the same day I got mine? Of course, not.  I saw more of them because my attention was on the vehicle I was driving. I looked for them and I saw more of them.    What you look for can determine what you see.  See Success Past Right, wrong or whatever. See the benefit. Be kind to yourself Give yourself a little grace You're human If you don't see the success in your past, it will be more difficult to build on it. Future Believe in your future Believe that you can achieve. Maybe with some help, guidance, or even mentoring. If you don't see success in your future, it will be more difficult to pursue it.  Possibilities Life is full of possibilities. It is far more risky to never take a risk.  Be optimistic  If you don't see possibilities, it will be more difficult to take advantage of them. Challenges Today's struggles will give you the strength you'll need tomorrow.  If you don't see success in the challenges you face, then it will be more difficult for you to overcome them. Big Hope in the big things that are important to you Keeping the big things you want in mind can help you keep going in the right direction  If you don't see success in the big important things, it will be more difficult for you to achieve them. Small Value in taking the small steps Focusing on the small steps you need to take can help you continue to make progress If you don't see success in the small steps, then it will be more difficult for you to stay persistent in doing the work to achieve goals and create the future you want.    What can you do?  Start where you're at. Of the areas I just mentioned, which ones are you already seeing the successes? The Past, The Future, The Possibilities, The Challenges, The Big, The Small. What areas is it easier for you to look for and see the positives?  Which areas is it more of a challenge for you to see the positives? Or, your successes?  If you want to add the value of seeing the good things in any of these areas, the best way to do that is to write out. They can be small things. Maybe it's tough to list many positives in a certain area. That's okay. Start where you're at.  The more you can begin to see the successes in each area the more you'll be able to build on those successes, move forward, and make progress to even better.  If you focus on the negative, then that's what you'll get more of in your life. If you can see the successes (even in the challenging things), then that's what you'll get more of because you'll be able to capitalize on them.    Choose where you focus. Choose what you focus on. Choose what you see. The choice is yours.    Use your choices to help you live the life you want. What's one thing that you're going to look for more of in your life?

You will surprise yourself on how far you can go.  Do you have a growth plan? Vision Can be the hardest or most challenging Attempt to see what could be for your life Becomes greater when you include others Leads to significance over success Do you have a vision for your life?    Start where you're at.  Where are you at? Do you have goals? Achievement, habit, growth? Or, do you have a vision that guides your life? Wherever you're at right now, start from there and work to improve and increase the goals you have for your life.  You can create the life you want.

Preventing you from ever experiencing the life you want? As scary as that sounds, it actually happens to some people. But, it won't have to happen to you not after listening to this episode.    Having your dreams stolen sounds like one of the most terrible things that could happen. That's exactly why I don't want it to happen to you. Today, we'll talk about 2 common factors that end up stealing people's dreams. Not yours though, because it is relatively simple to guard yourself against these thieves. And once you know about them, they actually lose a lot of their power. You'll just have to stay vigilant and maybe even recruit a friend to help call you out if you start to slip into letting your guard down.    By now you've got to be wondering what thieves I'm talking about.  Doubt  Doubt steals more dreams than failure ever will.  Doubt stops people from trying. Stops them from succeeding and prevents them from ever experiencing what they could. All just because of a little doubt.   What's the source of doubt?  One major source of doubt can steam from fearing failure. Failing is no reason to doubt yourself, though. Listen to episode ‘224: Why You Should Stop Avoiding Failure'.   How to reduce doubt   Build belief!  Encourage yourself See past success.  Acknowledge even the smallest of progress. Take small steps to BIG goals.   Personal development can be the best way to stop doubt from stealing your goals. Comfort  That dangerous comfort zone traps people into not taking the action that could lead to the amazing life they want to live.    You can have comfort or growth. But, not both.    You can develop the habit of stepping out of your comfort zone, though. Yes, it's still a little uncomfortable. But, you're used to it. So, it's not so bad.    How to stop conform from stopping you Build your WHY Become intentional Develop habits through small consistent steps.   Personal Development is the best way to stop comfort from stealing your goals. What you do is your choice. Small steps are easier than large leaps. 

    225: Leave Nothing To Chance

Maybe some things aren't going your way. Listen to these words that one of my mentors told me “frustration comes from trying to control the uncontrollable.” Just because you're frustrated and there are things you can't control doesn't mean you have to leave it all to chance. Don't leave your success, goals, or the future for you and your family to chance. Leave nothing to chance. Now, let's get into the episode.   Is it possible to leave nothing to chance? I believe so.    Before we get too much further as I think about the past few posts and episodes, I have to acknowledge something. I know it's not a popular opinion. That's okay because I'm not good at being popular. And you might pick up on the fact that I believe you have enormous power and control of the life you live.    You can't control everything. You don't need to control everything. And I'm not against taking some chances. Life has risks. And that's okay. Remember the podcast episode from last week? It was all about not being able to avoid failure if you want to succeed. Can't control that.   Think of buying a lottery ticket. I've bought a few over the years. Not that many, though. Still, I don't believe there is anything wrong with buying lottery tickets. If that is what you want to do. Now, this will be an extreme example, but using lottery tickets as your retirement planning is leaving it all to chance. And it is probably not the best step to take for your financial security.    What I want to talk to you about is how to stop leaving your life to chance. You may not buy any lottery tickets at all. That's cool. Are you leaving your future to change in other areas?    Like I said, there are things you can't control. Putting too much on what you can't control leads to disappointment and major frustration.    But, what if you focused on the exact things you can control?  That just may make the biggest difference in your life. It really could.    Negatives: Gives you the responsibility Removes excuses Other people may not like it   Positives: Security Progress Freedom Confidence Live The Life You Want   Now is the time to accept ownership of your life. Take control of the things you can control. One thing you can control is your choices. I talked a good bit about choosing your choices in episode 223.   Fortunately for you, there is some great news for leaving nothing to chance. No matter what you want to achieve, most likely someone has done it or something similar. And you probably can learn from them on how to achieve what you want and live the life you want to live. That's great news.   In fact, there probably is a system out there that can help. Find a system that you can follow that leads to the life you want. What is a system?    A system allows for ordinary people to get extraordinary results predictably. - Bob Burg.   I use an example from my life. I want to create a better financial future for my family. So, when I found a system with a long time proven track record and mentor to guide me, what do you think I did? Do you think I went after it? Of course, I did. I jumped at the opportunity. So, now that I have a system and a guide, I'm good right? Those two things mean that I'm set to achieve my goal of a better financial future for me and my family, right?    Nope! Not at all!   In order for me to leave nothing to chance, I have to do the work needed consistently to get the results I want.    Doing the work is the thing that I can control. Maybe I can't ‌control how long it takes. Maybe I can't control obstacles or challenges that come up. Maybe I can't control a lot of things.    But, I can control what I do.    The same is true for you. In order for you to leave nothing to chance, you'll need to choose what you do.    Often, doing the work consistently to achieve what you want is code for boring and not giving up. That's okay because it's the results you want.    What's most important is that you can achieve and you can create a better future for you and your family. Leave nothing to change. Do the work. And don't give up. 

    224: Why You Should Stop Avoiding Failure

I know. It's weird. That's why we need to talk about it in today's episode. You want to succeed and achieve your goals, right?  Of course, you do. We all do. If we all want to succeed, then does that mean we avoid failure?  Nobody really wants to fail, right?    It's easy to look at failure as the opposite of success. You either succeed or fail. It's as if on one side you have failure way over here on the left and on the far other side way over on the right is success.  And in order to succeed you'll have to go as far away from failure as possible and then you'll be able to succeed. That makes logical sense. And unfortunately as you know life is not always logical. In fact, it's not logical at all in this case.  Avoiding failure may take you straight to never achieving your goals and not being able to live the life you want.   How can avoiding failure stop you from achieving your goals?    Actively avoiding failure can: Stop you from experiencing opportunities Stop your learning Stop your growth Stop you from developing character Stop you from anticipating failure Stop you from giving your best Stop you from trying Stop you from helping others Stop you from getting the best from life   The further apart you see success and failure the more likely you won't experience your full potential. Think about that.   Now, imagine something with me. Imagine that you see success way over here on the left and the success of achieving your goals over here on the right. Now, bring the two together. Put the two right next to each other. See it in a way where you know you'll have to go through failure in order to get to success. See failure as a step toward success.    Far too often, people, maybe at one time you too, see failure as something to avoid in order to succeed. But we can go through failure, benefit from it, and use that benefit to achieve what we want and live our best lives.    It's okay to fail. Accept it. Learn from it. Give it your absolute best. And don't give up. This is your life. Make it what you want. 

    223: Your 2 Most Powerful Assets

Yes, someone else has more assets to get started toward their goals. Yes, that other person is getting help from some powerful people to get them on the right track. You can't control that.  But, the question is “Are you going to let what you can't control stop you from doing what you can do?” I hope not! Please don't.  Instead, use what you have, what I know you have, use it to the best of your ability and you will ‌do great things. You can achieve your goals.    In a world with a million things stacked against you, what do you have going for you?  Yes, some people have more, some people have less. But, how much you have or don't have isn't what is doing to determine your level of success. Yes, starting with a million dollars in the bank would make it easier to invest in real estate. But, some wildly successful people have started with nothing.  Some people start with more. Some start with less. What's most important is that you start and make the most of what you have. Fortunately for you, you have some assets that no matter who you are.  And what will make all the difference in you reaching your potential and living the best life you can is what you choose to do with them.    Your Two most powerful assets. Potential I know you have greatness inside of you. You have amazing potential. Maybe you just need a little help to see it. or you just need to make some simple adjustments so that you can begin to live it out. On a personal note, I've been told that I have potential many times over the years. Sometimes I didn't receive it so well. Sometimes it felt like people were telling me that I wasn't doing good enough. That didn't feel good.  That's not what I'm telling you here at all. What I want you to know is more of that I believe in you. That you are good enough. That you can do the things that you want to do. You can live the life you want to live. That's your potential.    Choices Another great asset of yours is the choices you make.   How you spend your choices is what will allow you to reach your full potential or not. You get to choose what you do. I know you have responsibilities and demands for your time and attention. There are plenty of things you need to do. But, looking at how you spend your choices can begin to bring the power back into your hands and your mind so that you can guide your life to go where you want. What choices can you make that will help you live your best life, reaching your potential, and creating the future you want for yourself?   Mindset - Develop the mindset you want by choosing what you put into your mind and the words you use. Actions - Use your actions to guide your life by being intentional with what you choose to do. Goals - Aim for what you want in life. Otherwise, you won't hit it.

This episode is all about a few of what I believe are the most important reasons to pursue personal development.    Does it really matter?  Choosing to become your best self, the best version of you that you can be, is tough. It's hard work. Like anything that's challenging and takes work, you need to have a good reason to do it or you won't stick to it. I believe every bit of effort you can put into becoming your best is worth it.  "Everything worthwhile is uphill"-John Maxwell   But, there's a major problem. Or, really just a big challenge. Human tendency is to take the path of least resistance or travel downhill.  One of the major issues with taking the path of least resistance is that you commit yourself to nothing better than what you have right now. I don't know about you, but that wouldn't work for me. Even if things are good now. But, that doesn't mean you have to give up on making progress toward the life you want. Let's talk about personal development for parents. I know your time is short, and the list of responsibilities is long. That is why today I just want to share a little encouragement and a few suggestions to help you care for yourself and your personal development.  Oh ya, and these also apply even if you're not a parent.    How to keep growing personally when time is short and responsibilities are long.   You can be your best And it's worth the effort   Your best isn't perfect No one is perfect. And definitely don't compare yourself to someone else.    One thing at a time Trying to do everything at the same time kills all progress. Believe me. I know. Of all the ones I'll share today, this one probably gives me the most trouble. But, even though I'm not perfect at it, I know it works. And it works even without being perfect.    Small Steps Count This one simple thing is especially powerful for us as parents. And of course, it's helpful for anyone who is busy too. You can take small steps toward your goal. And you can fit them in wherever you can.    Do what you can do This goes right along with ‘you don't have to be perfect' and ‘small steps count.' Still worth saying. Do what you can do. Reminds me of the quote “do not let what you can not do interfere with what you can do.”   Give yourself some grace Parents need this one. Non-parents need this one. Young, old, tall, short, everyone needs this one. And it seems like more and more we need to give it to ourselves and to others. Today, let's just focus on giving ourselves a little more grace.    Find what works for you There are two parts to this one. In order to find what works, you have to try things. You can't find out what works for you if you don't ever put in the effort and work on your self-development. Keep at it until you see some results.    Care for yourself Doing the things that are good for you and not just the things you feel like doing. Binging on Netflix with a half gallon of ice-cream would be nice at the moment. But, that probably wouldn't be good for me in the long run. Look at self-care as those things that take a little effort that are good for your body, mind, mental health, and so on. A little self-care not only helps you be a better, healthier, sharper you, it also can help you be better for those you care about too.  There are many benefits to putting in some work to become the best version of yourself that you can be. With or without kids, it's challenging. It takes work and time.    Still, you can do it and it's worth it.    To Help You Implement  Keep it simple Start small Don't give up

Do you think your investments will pay off in the long–run? Or, are you uncertain how they will turn out? Well, there is one investment I know of that always pays well.  These days there is plenty of uncertainty. Seems just like as soon as one crisis ends, another begins. Or, when some people do something terrible before too long, something else steals our attention away. All this makes it difficult to even consider our long-term well-being. It's almost impossible to prepare for the future when the demands and crises of today take all our attention. But, what would you think if I told you about an investment that always pays off? In fact, it can pay even better than the lottery and pays way more consistently too.    Are you investing in yourself? When I say investment, I know many people think of a lot of different things. Real Estate, stocks, bonds, crypto, even NTF things, and many others. There is one investment that doesn't matter which way markets are going. This one thing is always paying big and you're guaranteed to see a return on however much you choose to invest.  Investing in yourself is always an excellent investment.    Why is it a stellar investment? This is your life. You're the only one who can achieve your goals. Let's say you have a huge longer term goal that is important to you. And it's a big goal. And right now, with where you're and your skills, you have a 65% chance at hitting that goal in the next 3 years. What if you could raise that to a 98% chance? Would that be nice?   You are stuck with you. If you had a business partner, would you like it if they improved their business skills? If it's so exceptional, why don't more people invest?   Personal development takes work. It takes time. It takes persistence. And no one can really make you do it.    Not all bad news, though. Remember the positive, strong reasons to invest in yourself. I gave some general ones.  What are your personal reasons for becoming the best version of yourself that you can be? Those will be more important and more powerful than anything I can give you.  Come up with the biggest, most motivating reason you want to be your best. And commit to going after that because you can make it a reality.  Commit. Start. Don't Quit.   Also, remember that small steps count. To some people, it means certain things won't change. So why even try? They use that statement as a reason to give up. It is defeating. They become defeated. They defeat themselves by the viewpoint they take and it's encouraged by the words they use.  Not me. And not you either, right? Or at least it doesn't have to be you.  Here is how I use the phrase “it is what it is.” I got a flat tire and am running late. “It is what it is.” I can't change the fact that the flat tire happened.  I can, however, change or choose a few other things that make a HUGE difference.  First, I can change the tire. I can choose my attitude. I can choose how I prepare for another flat tire happening in the future. I can choose if I will let that flat tire ruin my day or week. I can choose if I allow that flat tire to take control of my life or if that flat tire “is what it is” and that's all that it is.  That flat tire is only a small, tiny insignificant bump along the way in my day, week, and life.  I use “it is what it is” to acknowledge that I can't change certain things. I didn't choose for certain things to happen.  BUT….(most important part) I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.    You cannot change what you cannot change. And that's okay.  You can't change other people. You Can't change the past.  No one can. And that's life. Just don't let those things change you. Don't let what you can't do stop you from doing the great, amazing things you can do.  And sometimes the most amazing thing you can do is choose to have the best attitude you can and do the next small right thing that is best for your life and future.  I know it can be difficult. Especially in the moment when things are frustrating and not going your way.  You can do it, though. Your life and future are worth you rising to the challenge. And I am here to help. Having huge goals can help you see what wonderful things you can accomplish in your life. At that same time, huge goals can lead to focusing too much on all the work the require.  Fortunately, you don't have to take large leaps to achieve your goals. You can take small steps. You just have to keep taking them.    Will you always hit huge goals? Nope. Not always. And that's okay. If you focus on the big things you want and keep taking steps toward them, you will make progress. And progress is great.  It is most important that you keep taking steps you keep doing the work and you keep making progress. That will mean you keep getting better.
