A Note from James:For 20 years, I've been writing about how much I think people should not go to college, and that college is not the only solution for a career. It could be the worst solution because tuition has risen faster than inflation every single year for the past 50 years. And why is that? Because student loans are a big scam and the government backs them, college presidents always know they're getting their money. They keep raising tuition even faster than society is raising the prices of anything else. James Keyes, former CEO of multibillion-dollar company 7-Eleven, has been CEO of many companies, including Blockbuster, and he wrote a book about the importance of education: Education is Freedom: The Future Is in Your Hands. So guess what? We decided to debate. And I'll admit I'm the sort of person who tends to agree with whoever the last person I speak to is, but he presented some very good arguments and I have to, I have to give them all credit for that. But I'll let you hear the conversation and it's well worth listening to, particularly if you've been wondering about this issue. So, here he is. Let's talk about college.Episode Description:James and corporate leader Jim Keyes debate the relevance of a college education for career success, attributing rising tuition costs and impractical skill sets to modern colleges' downsides. The importance of degrees as a differentiator in the job market is emphasized, with the debate also covering emerging alternatives such as Google certificates. The two later shift to discuss learning and education in the context of business evolution, specifically detailing challenges faced by 7-Eleven in maintaining "freshness" and the role of technology in overcoming these. Welcome warriors to The Power Of God's Whisper Podcast…In the grind of daily life, amidst the turmoil that swirls around us like a relentless storm, there's a resilience that defines the spirit of those who walk closely with God. It's the kind of grit that's spoken about in 2 Timothy 3:12-14, where the Apostle Paul doesn't just hint at the challenges that lie ahead for believers; he lays it out plain and stark. But within this warning lies a profound strategy for spiritual warriors: the power of perseverance.Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:12-14 - "In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it."The text from 2 Timothy isn't just a heads-up about the bumpy road of spiritual integrity; it's a rallying cry for those who dare to stand firm in their faith. The early followers of Christ knew too well the cost of their faith, and yet, Paul's words remind us that the battles we face aren't just personal trials; they're a part of a larger war. A war not against flesh and blood, but against a much darker force seeking to undermine the very fabric of our spiritual existence.Focus Training:* Recognize the Battle: Understanding that the struggle is not against the tangible but the spiritual is foundational. It's easy to be misled by the visible troubles, but our fight is against the forces that operate in the shadows. Recognizing this changes our strategy, turning our focus towards spiritual readiness and defense.* Equip with Knowledge: What you've learned and been convinced of acts as your armor. Dive deep into the Word of God, for it is not merely a collection of historical accounts, but the living, breathing strategy manual for overcoming spiritual deceit and adversity. Equip yourself and your family with its truths, making it a cornerstone of daily life.* Persevere in Faith: Perseverance is not a passive waiting but an active, steadfast continuation in our faith journey, despite the opposition. It means praying without ceasing, serving without tiring, and loving without faltering. It's about making the conscious decision to press on, even when the path gets steep. Conclusion:The call to protect ourselves and our family is a call to spiritual vigilance. It's a commitment to stand grounded in faith, rooted in the knowledge of Christ, and shielded by the power of perseverance. In the face of deception and persecution, our response is not fear but a deeper commitment to walk in the truth we have been taught.Call to Action:Today, make the choice to reinforce your spiritual defenses. Begin with prayer, seeking God's guidance and strength. Then, commit to a daily study of the Word, not just as an individual but as a family unit. Let the truths within shape your conversations, your decisions, and your actions.Question of the Day:How can you and your family become more rooted in the teachings of Christ to withstand the challenges of our times?Let's Pray:Heavenly Father, in a world that often seems against us, help us to stand firm in our faith. Equip us with Your wisdom and strength to protect ourselves and our loved ones from the deceit that surrounds us. Let Your Word be our guide, and Your Spirit our strength, as we continue in the path You've set before us. In Jesus' Name, Amen.Remember, warriors, the journey is tough, but our God is tougher. Lean into His strength, hold fast to His promises, and walk boldly in the faith you've been taught. The victory is already ours.My Reasons To Believe is a reader-supported publication. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Shapes of Mind and Pluralism in Alignment, published by Adam Shimi on August 13, 2022 on The AI Alignment Forum. This work was done while at Conjecture. This post has been written for the first Refine blog post day, at the end of a week of readings, discussions, and exercises about epistemology for doing good conceptual research. I have recently presented my model behind the Refine incubator that I'm running. Yet in the two weeks since this post was published, multiple discussions helped me make legible an aspect of my intuitions that I didn't discuss in this post: the notion of different "shapes of mind". There are two points to this intuition: Different people will have different "shapes of mind" — ways of revealing hidden bits of evidence from the world; And alignment is the kind of hard problem where the bits of evidence are dispersed, such that there's no one-trick that is enough. I've given my current best model of the different forms of pluralism and when to use them in another recent post. What I want to explore here is the first point: this notion of shape of mind. For that, let's recall the geometric model of bits of evidence I introduced in Levels of Pluralism. We have a high-dimensional space with objects in it. The space is the problem and the objects are bits of evidence. Because we suck at high-dimensional geometry, we use frames/perspectives that reduce the dimensionality and highlight some aspects of the space. These are operationalizations. There are clusters of bits of evidence in the space (whether they are rich or poor). These clusters are veins of evidence. Here the shapes of mind are favored operationalizations — that is, the favored low-dimensional compression of the high-dimensional space where the bits of evidence lie. More precisely, a shape of mind is a cluster of "close" such transforms. What makes someone have a given shape of mind? (Education) One of the most obvious I've observed on how people tackle problems come from their background. For an alignment example, John tackle problems like a statistical physicist whereas Paul tackles problem like a theoretical computer scientists, leading to very different perspectives: True Names vs Building-Breaker. (Knowledge) What you know influences your shape of mind, since you can see and link more things. But when I'm talking about knowing here, I mean the kind of deep knowledge that framing exercises are supposed to provide. (Past Life) This one feels easily missed by most people; after all, why should what you did in your past (especially personal life) should influence your scientific research? Because it clearly does. A notable example is how easy it becomes to see hidden assumptions about how the world is supposed to work when you don't come from a background where they make any sense. One thing this handle makes clear is the difference between my model for different programs as Refine, SERI MATS, and PIBBSS respectively aim at: Refine is looking for different shapes of mind that the mind currently at work in conceptual alignment, and aims at empowering them to contribute productively. MATS (according to my current model) is mainly looking for shapes of mind closed to archetypal ones (the mentors), and focuses on making them fit for alignment research by helping them approach this initial example (while still maintaining enough diversity for productive disagreement). PIBBSS is looking for new shapes of minds, but ones that are visibly relevant and useful from existing object-level shapes of mind. That is, PIBBSS starts with current conceptual alignment researchers and the shapes of mind that they feel they might get something out of in their own research. I'm excited to finally be in a field with all three. Thus we can see framing exercises as a way of shaping your mind to see the hidden bit...

This is a great topic - impactful in so many situations. I refer to it regularly and it was good to go through it in more detail with Stephen. Optimal Appraisal allows us to best reframe and consider our experience to ensure we are best placed to reach the outcome we have in mind. Good, bad, indifferent, hard, easy, unexpected... all are important ingredients in creating the future. Some notes below I jotted down during the conversation - hope they help. Any thoughts and comments - let us know at podcast@coachpro.online. Thanks for sharing and subscribing - it really helps. Here are the notes: Optimal appraisal is when we're assessing with a good outcome in mind An appraisal is different from judgement – which can be emotional. An appraisal is making a logical, intelligent and considered assessment of people and situations Informal and Formal appraisals – we're constantly “informally” assessing our lives, situations, environment, memories, work, opportunities, relationships. Learning to optimally appraise will improve all our appraisals – formal, informal and subconscious A formal appraisal is “let's check in with where we are” – and isn't only at work. It's something we do all the time – ask ourselves a conscious question “how are we about X today?” Optimal appraisal will allow you to make big, disruptive steps and transformational change Suboptimal appraisal means the past trajectory will determine the future path Optimal and optimistic is different from positive – Optimal is “I understand what has happened and still believe that good things can happen. Positivity is more a blind belief that good things will happen – should happen” 3 key areas in an optimal appraisal – Past – Present – Future Typically, people will spend too much time in the past and ignore the present altogether. The optimal distribution of time is 20:30:50 So, if you've got an hour – that means you spend 12 minutes on the past. The past is important – everything that has occurred – the good, the bad, the unexpected, the easy, the hard – it's important to acknowledge and identify the past When you know the past doesn't define the future – it allows you to be more honest. If you view your past as all good - or as all bad – you're missing something important Present – the present disrupts the future being a continuation of the past. It acts as a trampoline, a springboard, a catalyst allowing you to dramatically alter the trajectory, the course of your future. It allows you to aim for the spectacular – the transformative 5 key things for Present in Optimal Appraisal 1 Experience: What experience do I now have 2 Expertise: What expertise do I now have 3 Knowledge: What do I now know for certain 4 Ability: What can I now do 5 Qualification: What are we now qualified to do Altogether – this means we are in our strongest position ever This process transforms the past into rocket fuel for the future – what are you going to do with it – all this new and learnt talents You're in your strongest position ever – what should you be aiming for? Process allows you to reframe all experience as something learned to help you move forward to the end in mind “what doesn't kill you will make you stronger – I'd rather it wasn't a 50:50 call but what Optimal Appraisal does is ask “How did this make you stronger?” What do you now know for sure that you didn't know before Go back further into your past if you cannot find something to reconnect to All of these things enable you to understand that you've never been in a better situation today to achieve something amazing tomorrow Considered optimism beats positivity built on hope Operational: Be aware that appraisals can be optimal Management: Start to manage your “informal” appraisals more optimally – don't dwell on your past but don't ignore it. Use it. Strategically: By building the discipline to optimally appraise formally and informally you will be better placed to drive better subconscious decisions Projects and Plans – trajectory does not need to be linear – past failures do not need to limit the future

Whatever we do or not do, whatever we think, value or hate, how we behave and whatever we believe in or not in our life mainly depends on one thing: our worldview. An oversimplified analogy might be: Whenever we change our eyeglasses, our view of things around us changes because our eyeglasses determine what we are able to see or not to see. Everybody has a worldview. Rich or poor, smart or stupid, believer or non-believer. All things in our life depend on our worldview. Derived from the German word “Weltanschauung,” it refers to a belief system holding all significant concepts of our life such as God, cosmos, knowledge, behavior, values, humanity and history. It is like a kind of a grand perspective of our world and our life. In more scientific terms, worldview is a mental structure forming our ultimate beliefs. It provides a general context for life, including a vision of what we consider “authentic” or “real.” Having a peace of mind requires a well-balanced life, based on realistic assumptions of all basic and critical aspects of our human being. Philosophers identify the worldview as the “big question of life.” According to philosophers, our worldview should answer to the following most important questions of our life: 1. Ultimate reality: What kind of God, if any, in fact, the exists? 1. External reality: Is there anything beyond the cosmos? 2. Knowledge: What can be known – and how can anyone know it? 3. Origin: Where did I come from? 4. Identity: Who am I? 5. Morals: How should I live? 6. Values: What should I consider of the greatest worth? 7. Predicament: What is humanity's fundamental problem? 8. Resolution: How can humanity's problems be solved? 9. Past/Present: What is the meaning and direction of history? 10. Destiny: Will I survive the death of my body and if so, in what state? --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Early-stage startups often wonder when the right time is to consider a quality management system (QMS)? Is it ever too soon to start a QMS? Today's guest is Devon Campbell, founder of Prodct LLC, which helps establish and implement holistic, efficient, and practical product development and manufacturing strategies. Devon and Jon Speer discuss the importance of timing when starting a QMS for medical device companies to ensure future product success.. Some of the highlights of the show include: ● Emerging Trend: Almost all of Devon's clients have no QMS, or have what they consider a QMS, but isn't in reality. ● Mentor for MassChallenge: The global, zero-equity startup accelerator has helped more than 1,900 startups and raise more than $4.3 billion in funding. ● Hungry for Knowledge: What's your core technology? Commercialization strategy? Development strategy? What do you need to do to take it to market? ● Lack of Appreciation: Startups should think through QMS and design control opportunities, strategies, and implementation sooner than later. ● Start Early with End in Mind: Make it easy to pivot later. If you don't go through the effort that it takes, it's difficult to backtrack. ● Best Practices: Look far forward and obtain external help and guidance from quality experts. ● Bigger Picture: Work with everyone involved to better understand challenges and changes with a company's QMS, as it evolves and matures in real time. ● Patients who depend on your medical technology will appreciate your focus on true quality.
